Don't come here. The haircut you get will be performed horribly. Notice i didn't say done - the cut i received looks like they didn't even finish. And they're dishonest about it too. When they show you the back of your head with a mirror, they move it so you can't see that they did a bad job. They intentionally do a bad job and that's really not ok. Haircuts have gotten ridiculously expensive in this city! Some of my friends are regularly spending more than $60 almost once a month. I refuse to do this. I've been coming here for over 5 years and this place is still reasonably priced at $28 before tip. The key in the beginning is to communicate very clearly what you want, they can't read your mind. Be precise where possible and don't just say "short," "long," or "trim it", say "1 inch" or "#1", etc. The lady who cuts my hair has nailed it down to a perfect science now, but it's often hard for someone new to get it exactly right on the first time. The key is communication and feedback. It's a relationship you build over time. Eventually, once you find someone who cuts it just the way you like it, I suggest you stick with them and find out what days they are working and make specific appointments with them. See who works best for you. Parking can be hard to find in the area so I try to go during off-peak hours. read more

The individual (I think his name was Harry?) who helped me was very kind and thorough despite only coming in for a wash/blow dry and not a larger service. He also used great product on my hair and smoothed it out nicely. Price was very affordable and they were able to take me the same day. read more

If I could leave zero stars I would. I've been going to this place for over a year. Always had a decent haircut. Today I had a haircut from Dan (guy with a Mohawk). He was so aggressive and shaky. Very quick uneven haircut. He shaved facial hair on one side and forgot about the other. I asked him to cut the top a little bit shorter. After one move with scissors he asked: Like this? He said "if you like the haircut come Tuesday and Wednesday, if you don't - come on Thursday and Friday, I won't be here." Who the hell says that??? I told him that it was an unpleasant experience. He said that "this is his style and no one complained before." And of course he got defensive, rude and aggressive. I don't understand how he still works in customer service with that attitude and most of all, such a bad work. read more

If you are looking for a gender affirming haircut, do NOT go to this place. I am trans and went in with shoulder length hair, requesting a short transmasc-esque fringe cut. It was a significant step for me. The cis male stylist (with a slicked back faux hawk--he didn't introduce himself) called me "Miss," and I asked him to please not refer to me in that way. I said I'm nonbinary, trans and am looking for a gender affirming cut, showing him a few photos of the style I was looking for. As he kept chuckling about my request, I said, "Is there a reason you keep laughing? Because this is actually a big deal for me, as it's gender affirming." He replied,"You're being really sensitive." At that point, I got up, said this wasn't happening (the hair cut), that I was uncomfortable, and that I surprised I was being treated this way in what I thought was an LGBTQ+ friendly salon. It was a devastating, patronizing and generally awful experience, and it needs to be shared here for the sake of other NB/trans folks--I don't want anyone else to go through what I did. It's so very important for a salon to recognize the significance of a gender affirming cut and for a stylist to understand as much. read more

Full Disclaimer: I have been going to this place for several years since my hair doesn't really require that much of a fancy haircut to get right. I've never put in a review before today. The ladies that work there have always been pretty nice. Haircuts are okay to good, especially for the price. But there is one guy with longer hair (can't remember his name...) who has actually driven me away for good. Went in to get a haircut, and he was in the bathroom on his phone. One of the ladies told me to sit and wait for him. I waited in the chair until the lady went to the bathroom and actually had to knock to get him out to do his job. He then proceeded to do my haircut WHILE ON THE PHONE the entire time. Using one hand to try and cut my hair with an electric razor while he was on the phone with his bank or something. He stopped midway through to go write something at the front desk for his personal phone call. He "finished" the haircut, but left a bunch of hair all over, no blow-dry to get it off. I was so irritated that he was paying maybe 20% of attention to me while having his phone conversation that I ended up not tipping (which I hate to not do. I know how hard it is in the service industry). I understand that sometimes life stuff gets in the way, and I am pretty sympathetic to it...but you handle that on your own time or, at the very least, don't handle it while someone is paying you to focus on something else. I will not be going back again. While this one guy should not (and does not) reflect on the ladies who are really nice, his whole attitude means I don't even want to RISK going in if he's there. read more

I came here to trim my short hair and ended up having to come back 30 minutes later because I had so many strands longer than the other. I was there for 35 minutes and still came out with an uneven haircut (again). I'd recommend to save your money and invest in going somewhere that knows how to cut hair. read more

Cut depends on who you get. I usually go to the same lady and she does a fairly good job. However, sometimes she shaves off the back of my neck hair and my side burns when I don't ask to. I booked an appointment with the same barber and yet my appointment time was not honored as I got a different person than I requested to do my hair. The guy that cut my hair that time cut it too short to the point where I did not know how to style my hair because my hair wasn't curling like it usually did and I did not like it. I don't feel entirely respected there as an LGBTQ+ trans person; I wrote down my name on the appointment as Kaz but after swiping my card the cashier called me by my deadname that is on my debit card when saying goodbye and made it very awkward. read more

Just got back from nice cuts and got a nice cut, makes sense, right? Betty cut my hair and it is looking awesome. Phoned in for appointment at 10:30 with Betty told her what I wanted and got what they used to call "short back and sides". My hair is thinning at the crown and she took it into consideration and worked with it. Works for me, shop is two blocks from my apt. I always make an appointment that forgoes the wait. BEWARE OF HOMOPHOBIC STYLIST!! (Pics attached) What a terrible experience today. Here is why I have brought my previous review down. The stylist that works at the 2nd chair from the door is INCREDIBLY HOMOPHOBIC! When I walked in, she was cutting someone's hair. She looked up at me, and ignored me as she continued to cut. Her hair was wet & she looked unkempt. Like a wet dog. When my regular stylist wasn't notified of a waiting client, I stood there waiting until she finally came out, I was greeted and welcomed. As I got my hair cut, I noticed another customer come in. The rude stylist called someone from the back to come assist the customer. After she finished the first cut, an elderly gentleman came in. She quickly directed him to her chair, so as not to lose a sale to another stylist. But then she told the man to wait "only 2 minutes" as she BLOW DRIED HER HAIR because she had recently washed it. SERIOUSLY?!??!? Poor man waited over 5 minutes. (Photos attached) Look, I know for a fact that this woman is homophobic. I've been coming to this salon for YEARS. More than one person has told me so. If you don't like gay people, get the f out of the Castro! There's already enough hatred towards us in the world, we don't want it in the Castro, just because you make bigger tips here!!! After explaining in detail what I wanted for my hair, my directions were completely ignored. Visibly upset I got up from the chair and asked for someone else. Meanwhile the guy (in the front with the ugly long hair coiffed, who had just finished ignoring all my directions) decided it would be cute to tell me if he owned the shop I'd be told to fuck off. Fine. Whatever. It's not like he can give a good haircut, let alone handle customers. Thankfully his actually competent colleague came in to fix the damage that had been done. I'd been coming here for 8 years, and after the past two experiences where the same guy has ignored me both times, I will not be back. Do yourselves a favor, and avoid this place. My original barber salon ended up being unavailable for a walk-in Saturday, but I decided to give this business a try based on a friend's recommendation. I came for a men's cut and wash, asking for a short tapered fade on the sides and a trim at the top. My hair was cut by a friendly woman who made me feel comfortable from the get-go. As for the quality of the cut, it's not the most meticulous fade you would normally get from a men's barber, but I was very pleased with the end result regardless. The service (cut and wash for $30 excluding tip) was more affordable relative to most $$ hair salons you find in the Dolores/Castro, and this was what attracted me. They were detail-oriented and washed my treated hair with colour-safe products. My only point of dissatisfaction was the discomfort I felt resting my neck against the hair sink. The quality of the service is in their name: nice! If you're looking for a quality last-minute cut for less than $30, I would recommend going here. read more

Good, fast, cheap! I was able to come in as a walk-in and saw Betty. My hair is kind of a challenge due a rather epic cowlick, but she did an excellent job and quickly... probably 25 minutes to a reasonably trendy haircut. Not quite Vegas nightclub promoter trendy, with the buzz cut on the sides and straightened gelled hair on top, but solid. And I'm sure she could have done that had I asked. We were nervous about finding someone to do our hair after moving here because We LOVED our last place (Bladerunner in SLO). Nice Cuts is not fancy, but they are in the middle of the Castro and we love Betty! She knows what look the boys in the Castro want, and will let you know if the guy next to you is checking you out lol. They are also so inexpensive, we're hooked. It's worth making an appointment, even if you don't have much notice. They get busy and give priority to appointments. We go to Betty every time, but the other gals are great too. read more

As you can see from the updated review, I have been going here once a month for over six years. Over that time you've seen the price go up (still a good deal but there are options in the City that are far better for only a few dollars more now) and the turnaround time increase exponentially. They are really trying to churn through as many people as they can and the quality has deteriorated significantly. Particularly to be avoided during high volume times 11-2 after 4 pm and weekends. Really unfortunate but I'm sure their rent is through the roof now for this location compared to what it was seven or ten years ago. read more
