It was a great time, and only $5 a person. We could get a beer or glass of boxed wine for a $3 donation, making for a fun, inexpensive date night relative to other venues. The plays are $20-$25, which is the typical price for theatre in WNY. It's a more intimate setting. Fewer seats and closer to the stage. They specialize in more edgy, thought-provoking shows that you aren't likely to see at the more conventional playhouses. There's other events like Dirty Love during the year, as well.

Yesterday, I saw "Emma" at the Irish Classical Theater. Excellent actors. Comfortable seating. Enough leg room. You are close enough to see the actors close up. The stage is in the center, and on 4 sides, the seating. Easy to find on Main Street. Street parking or paid lots in the area. There is a $5 during events lot in Washington Street, a short walk to this and several theatres in the area. I'm looking forward to returning to this smaller but amazing theatre at the end of this season to hopefully see a futuristic drama. One can usually find an open seat last minute. However I bought my ticket via the internet on this occasion.

We recently came to see Or, and had a great experience from the moment we arrived. The bartender and ushers were friendly and the bar had a good selection of beers, wines, and n/a drinks to choose from, and allow you to bring your drink in using their covered cups. The cast was top notch as well and we enjoyed the play. I hope to come back sometime.

This has always been my favorite theatre in Buffalo, from the days of Studio Arena to 710 to…read moreMusicalfare. It has had some very nice changes since becoming 710/Musicalfare. The lobby has expanded with the bar having moved to the other side of the lobby into a space that was not there before and the old bar area is now filled with tables and chairs where patrons can sit comfortably while waiting for the theatre to open. The seats inside the theatre have always been very comfortable. I do not remember there being cup holders attached the back of the seat in front of me, so that might be part of the upgrade. The rows are spaced so that one can easily cross in front of a seated patron without the patron having to stand up. The steps are also more gradual than in the old Musicalfare Theatre, and well lighted. By the way, we were there to see "Jesus Christ, Superstar", a great production.

In Buffalo, we're lucky to have so many older historic buildings finding contemporary uses. It's a…read moretestament to change and innovation. Whether that's Silo City Rocks, The Pierce Arrow Building, Statler City or many more...the ALT Theater is one of the more unique performance spaces that I've set foot in. Finding the actual Theater itself is a bit of a challenge. It's on Great Arrow Ave (making a right from Elmwood) and since the Pierce Arrow Building is so huge, it may take a while to find the actual door to the Theater. The entrance to get it is adjacent to the one of the parking lots. You then have to get up to the third floor to find your way into the actual performance space (lots of signage is helpful!). How amazing it is that a former luxury car assembled their vehicles in this building? And now it's home to two Theater spaces (ALT and Subversive), a film studio and hosts incredible events such as the Mass Appeal fashion show? I'm gushing about the Pierce Arrow building being put to good use, but let's get back to the ALT. It dubs itself as a black box Theater, although the show that I saw here ended up almost being setup as a proscenium of sorts, which shows that there is flexibility with the way you can use the space and engage the audience. Surprisingly, it was pretty warm here (The Pierce Arrow Building is nearly 133,000 square feet so most parts of it are not heated or accessible). It's focus is on experimental Theater (self-proclaimed as a hub for experimentation and innovation). The sound and acoustics were wired well for this particular show. One of the challenges is actually finding the space and navigating the Pierce Arrow Building (I actually got lost as I was trying to get out of the building and ended up in some creepy maintenance rooms), but it's part of the fun. You practically get a crash course in Urban Exploration when you go see a show here. If you've never experienced the ALT or the Pierce Arrow Building in any form, I urge you to check out their shows and find one that you think you'd enjoy!

Seeing Ibsen's "The Mast Builder" at Silo City as part of the Against the Grain Theater Festival…read moremay be one of the coolest things I have ever done. Against the Grain Theater Festival is a new multi-city theater project based in Buffalo, New York. They explore the basic questions of human identity through plays, folktales and early narrative forms from around the world. The play was three acts in three different locations. The audience moves in between each act. The first act was in an old building that felt like a dungeon, the second act was inside a silo with grain spouts and tea light candles all around, and the final act was outside right along the the canal. The performance was incredible and moving from space to space with the rest of the audience really made you feel like you were part of something bigger than yourself.

Just saw "A Night with Janis Joplin" and was blown away. Samantha Hoy as Janis was terrific and the 4 women who sang her inspiration songs were too, so was the 'band'. Highly recommended. PS I have seen a few shows there and was never disappointed, but this one 'rocked' the 'house'...

It's ironic that a theatre production at the Kav brought me back to the campus of the D'Youville…read moreUniversity! We used to call it D'Youville College in my day - or just "DYC." I guess I was too busy studying to become a nurse when I I attended many years ago. A wonderful theater was under my nose, and I didn't know it! The Kav is in its 47th year now. This a Buffalo treasure. My girlfriend suggested we see the production called "A Night with Janis Joplin". I'm glad she did because it turned out to be a spectacular musical production. All the singers and musicians in the band were amazing! I was not exposed to the music of Janis Joplin growing up. I came to learn more about her life and how she became a star, leaving her hometown in Texas for San Francisco. Sadly, her life was short and she died at the age of 27 of a drug overdose. She only had a mere four years of fame, 1966-1970. Yet, her social and cultural legacy was, and is, unquantifiable. The singing voices of the "Blues Women" who's contribution to making Janis who she was as a blues artist in this production were over the top WOW!! Kudos to these amazing singers. They portrayed the likes of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Chantel, Bessie Smith, Odetta, Nina Simone. Comfortable seats. Leg room! Small intimate theater and no bad seats. Very decent pricing for live theater productions. I'll be coming back to the Kav to see Julius Caesar next!
