    Midsummer Nights Dream 2022

2022 marks the 47th year of this free event! This has been summer tradition for my friends and I for a decade or more. In response to the pandemic, social distancing, etc the team that produces this event took an awesome move by taking a portion of Shakespeare mobile. You will certainly want to follow their social media and/or regular page to be update to date on what show is being produced, when and where it will be if the traveling show is that day. Be sure to bring your own treats, a bottle of wine and charcuterie are great on the hill. Because it is next to Hoyt Lake I suggest bringing or apply bug spray before taking your seat. Additionally bring a couple of bucks for when the actors come by to pass the hat, although free to attend the production is supported by donations and sponsorships.

    Measure for Measure! :-D

I've been going here to see Shakespeare plays for decades. I started coming when I was a teenager with my dad. Then in my early 20s with my would-be-husband on dates. The last several years it has been with our children. Shakespeare in Delaware Park is a Buffalo staple. Every production is excellent quality. My only complaint, which has nothing to do with the show itself, is the parking. It's all street parking, which is always packed. But sometimes you get lucky. We recently attended "Measure for Measure", and lucked out with a great spot. It did require me to dust off my parallel parking skills, but mission accomplished! And as far as the performance goes, another spectacular show! The venue is all lawn seating, bring your own chair and/or blanket. And bring-your-own-picnics are welcome, too. For "Measure for Measure", we were celebrating our son's 13th birthday. He requested lasagna for dinner. I had no choice but to fulfill the new teen's request, so we lugged a whole lasagna and drinks down to the show. And it's okay! Picnics of all shapes and sizes are welcome. We saw a couple dining complete with flowers, candlesticks, and champagne flutes, so sweet. And you save on both bring-your-own-food, and the ticket prices--the performance is always free! Except for the pass-the-hat, which is optional but highly recommended. If you can, bring whatever amount of cash you can spare to donate; every dollar helps keep this amazing tradition going in Buffalo. I'm looking forward to "Romeo and Juliet" later this summer with our family, hopefully this time without lugging a huge lasagna in too, but parents do what they have to do--the show must go on! :-D

    Amazing set

I came to see Much Ado, one of my favorites. I've never seen Shakespeare in the Park before and expected something more stripped down, but the set and costumes were amazing. The set had a great Mediterranean vibe and was used to full effect to enhance the physical comedy. There were songs and a masterfully executed dance sequence at the masquerade party. Even dancing, the actors deftly delivered the Bard's words. The acoustic guitarist was another great addition that set the mood for a few scenes. Great venue and production company. I came with a group, but I would recommend packing wine and a picnic for the perfect date night.

Shakespeare in Delaware Park has been a grand Buffalo staple for many years! But, I didn't start going until just recently. Which is ridiculous, because Shakespeare is right up my alley. It's something like the second longest running Shakespeare in the Park event in the country, which only further attests to how awesome an event this is. Probably the best part of it is, it's a free event! It's a non-profit production. Though, they typically ask for donations during the intermission - "No donation is too small." Plus, they have a super cool merch booth, with posters and t-shirts and all sorts of commemorative trinkets. I could talk all day about how great the productions are each and every year. They always pick two plays, a comedy and a tragedy, and the shows rotate each season so you can expect something different each year. They'll take a Shakespeare play and put their own little twist/unique take on it - for example, The Merry Wives of Windsor had an all-female cast (an awesome opposition to Shakespeare's time, when the cast was all-male). A few key things to bring: snacks and drinks (definitely do some wine!), blankets and/or lawn chairs, bug spray, warm clothes (sometimes you get those chilly summer nights!), pillows for comfort. They don't allow you to sit close to the front if you bring lawn chairs, so keep that in mind! Get there early if you want a front row blanket spot. I'll go to this three or four times a year - I'd watch the shows over and over again if I could. Genuinely one of the best ongoing summer events in Buffalo.

I actually performed bad accents to this crowd. Not even joking.

I have a spear and I am angry at you. (Shakes Spear). Every city should have this. It's an awesome annual Shakespeare performance for free, for the masses, in a beautiful open air setting which thousands upon thousands of people attend. What's more, I've had the pleasure of going on stage and doing crazy accents in front of the entire 10k people. I think it went down fairly well. Some laughter, plenty of applause. I give it a 4 just because I think the actors should get paid more for what they do, because they're very very good. A lot of energy in these performances and I support it thoroughly. I do, though, think it's funny hearing American accents (or awful British accents) in Shakespeare plays. And if Britney Spears falls asleep in Delaware Park, then you should wake her up. I really would give them more stars if allowed. Picture this: sitting beneath the open sky, enjoying a self-packed picnic while enjoying a great play written by Shakespeare himself. This kind of luxury can't be enjoyed everywhere. They are free to public theatre, that runs 5 days a week with excellent production quality. We watched The Tempest that is the featured play during the first half of the summer (2019). The actors were great and even came down to the audience and interacted with us. Some tips: * Get there early so that you can snag a good spot * You can pack some food as well as beer and wine * Be prepared to be in close quarters with other people

My first time here was a great experience. Thanks to Yelp, we were able to sit on the top-of-the-hill deck in chairs and enjoy great good from Ashker's caffe along with done wine. The play was great, the actors were EXCELLENT, and the stage sits right along the water at Delaware Park, a National Olmstead park. Bravo!

Great show and cast. Glad to finally make it out to this beautiful space and such a fun date experience.

I like beer with my Shakespeare!

Free! Outdoors! Bring your own booze! This is a fabulous summer event. Great actors and elaborate and high quality sets. They usually at least have a small snack cart to get food if you don't want to put in the effort of bringing your own. The main downside here is having to contend with the weather. It took me two trips to see the entire play due to rain, but it was still fun. I recommend going during the week if you can. Not only is it less crowded, but the actors don't have to compete against live music or DJs nearby. I was really bummed when I came on a Saturday evening and the music coming from the Marcy Casino was super distracting.

The crowd settling in before the play begins.

Shakespeare in Delaware Park is one of the all-time greatest quintessential Buffalo summertime activities. Summer just would not be complete without seeing one if not both productions. In my younger days I would bike through the park in the evenings and stop to watch a scene or two, then come back with a picnic basket and some friends, or a date. I've since brought my children, and who knows, perhaps one day grandchildren. At 44 years, Buffalo's is the second oldest (and one of the largest) free "Shakespeare in the Park" productions. The Tempest lived up to the usual high standards. Acting, directing, choreography - stellar. I laughed and even teared up a bit. The new stage is beautiful. Though there was some mic trouble early on, the crowd was captivated throughout. Thankfully, the brief bouts of rain falling from a strangely blue sky did not dampen the mood.

Haven't been to this event in over 25 yrs. Loved it. It's been going on for 47 yrs. The actors were great. There were port-a-potties on sight. The intermission was appreciated. Get there early to get better sight lines & either wear long pants or bring a blanket for after the sun goes down. Also, bring your own food and drinks. None are sold on sight. Donations are greatfully accepted but the event is free!

Had a great time despite the rain. They had to cut the show short. But they did a great job. The only issue was trying to figure out where in the park the theater was located. Delaware Park could use some signage.

This review is a little late but better late than never. Every year we attend Shakespeare in Delaware Park. It's a nice night out especially if the weather cooperates. This year was great again, as expected. It is a professional grade performance with the actors doing a good job adapting to the outside environment including noise, bugs and people doing a lot of moving around. The stage sets are always retooled to the particular play they are doing. Over the years the sound system and lighting have greatly improved. I recommend attending. They have two play runs each summer.

She's a pretty talented singer, but I really did not expect them to snag so many freaking talented performers for this musical. But before I get ahead of myself, let's talk about the theatre. This spot is right next to Sportsman's, but the entrance is on the side of the building (not the Sportsman's alley, but the opposite side of 330 Amherst). It's kind of towards the back, but there's visible signage and they even put out a poster of the musical, so I knew I was in the right place here. The space is everything I love about local theatres. Very intimate, only about 75 or so sears in house. (It's no wonder that a good show will sell out fast here.) The stage is fairly small too. Seating is a bit more stadium-style with an open aisle that the actors can use. The seats in the back reached a little too far back for my liking, and it was tough to see when the actors were lying down on the stage, but otherwise everyone was pretty visible. You can order a drink before sitting down for the show - which is always a good bonus!! My only real gripe was, when I purchased my tickets they had it under "General Admission" and so I assumed we'd be able to sit anywhere we like - and when we arrived there was assigned seating. I don't know if it was something with the ticket service they use, but I was really hoping to sit up front and would have picked seats there if I had been prompted to before buying them. On to the show - nothing short of fantastic. Calling it "good" would be insulting, it was that incredible of a show. Every actor fit the role so well, sang incredibly, sang their hearts out. You could tell there was passion in the work. I wish they did a cast recording, or I could see a tape of them performing. I want to come back and see more ART shows because of how amazing of a job they did with this production! ART is definitely a fantastic 'hidden' Black Rock gem. These are all for the taking during a writer's creative process. After all, written works are the opinion of the artist. During this play, my mind was kept open. My take was to put myself not only in the role of the writer, but also the roles of the actors. The work, energy, effort and expression are gifts to the spectator.
