I'm surprised by the negative reviews! I had a lovely first-time experience at Riley Family Dental…read more The front desk staff had already processed my new patient paperwork and insurance information before my appointment, so I didn't have to do anything at check-in. The dental assistant was very sweet, and did a thorough and efficient cleaning. Dr. Riley came in shortly after and was very kind. On another note, I usually dread going to the dentist for fear of being "sold to." I've been to other practices in Charlotte that have tried to scare me about the condition of my teeth in order to sell me a $500 night guard or Invisalign. I really appreciate that this office didn't do that. Simply told me what I needed to know about my health and sent me on my way. I had a really great experience and highly recommend this office!

SCAMMERS!!!! Don't treat here!!!!!…read more Treated here once in December 2018. Now I'm getting collection notices from a date of service already paid by my insurance and billed incorrectly by this place!! I work in insurance had I not caught this they would be double paid!! I feel bad for anyone who has been ripped off by this place. Also, I find it odd I've never had any dental issues and go every 6 months for routine cleanings and exams, my first visit here all of a sudden they need to refer me to an oral surgeon... I haven't even had a cavity since I was 16. Go somewhere else so you're not dealing with their errors over a year later! Finally received a call back and they confirmed the error in which I STILL need to work out with collections. DO NOT LET THEM ROB YOU AND SCAM YOU!!!

Dr. Schmitt herself is good at what she does. Appointment scheduling is very easy. I have never had to wait for my appointment time. More often I get in early, if I show up early. I have also had to make a last minute change and they were more than helpful and understanding as well. On my first visit, I had to get a root canal and she referred me outside of her office. However, the doctor she referred me to specialized in root canals and did the job very fast. Much faster than she would have she says since she doesn't do them as often. And even though she referred me outside of her office, it wasn't some expensive office either. It was very affordable and much more affordable than other offices in the area. Since my first visit I have introduced the rest of my family to her. My son was introduced to the dentist recently and she made his visits always very comfortable. He is not scared of the dentist and actually works harder at taking care of his teeth because of her. My child needed to get a couple of fillings and she has this great machine that numbs the mouth and the gums without having to use a needle. Amazing!!! If you are looking for a new dentist in the Northlake Area I highly recommend Dr. Schmitt and her staff.

UPDATE. 06/24 WELL!…read more The day Dr. Tj Habashi quit along with the blessed office manager Candace, the whole dental practice fell apart as did the Roman Empire. Dr. Engels wife Tiffanie took over. The most miserable woman on the planet. It's very sad. What was once what I described in my former review as "the dental Shangri La" is now the dungeon of hell. I have been very ill. My BP has been running 200/120. THIS is hypertensive critical and death defining. I asked Tiffanie to please provide me with my medical records with attatched afadavit to authenticate them for legal reasons and her reply was, "that's not my job and I'm busy". She was rude, belligerent and unkind actually sub human. Since Engel Dental Institute is not a corporation and has no medical records custodian it is the responsibility of the doctor in charge or the office manager. Since Tiffanie is Engels wife she holds herself up on a pedestal and not subject to anything she does not want to do. Not even to save a life. So as the court suggests that I bypass her and Subpoena Dr. Engel and hold him accountable and file a formal complaint with the North Carolina dental board. Dr. Engel has no choice but to comply with the court. If he does not he will be held in contempt and face jail time with hefty monetary fines. Doctors believe they are above the law and don't have to abide with anything. Wrong! This time that will not happen. Please beware of this medical practice and if u were a satisfied client you will be putting yourself in a dangerous scenario. Consider going elsewhere. What was once a place of hope is now a place of sorrow.

Wouldn't do a general cleaning without doing a gingivitis cleaning first. I understand wanting to do due diligence and do these heavy duty cleaning but if your patients cannot afford them, then offer them what they came in for. Don't tell them you won't give them anything. I put in all my paperwork I was fearful of the dentist, hadn't been in 5-6 years because of past experiences. Guess it's going to take another 5-6 to gain the courage again after this. I had to call my insurance after because I cannot believe it. My insurance also told me this is incorrect. The employees I interacted with were all lovely so I can't say anything negative about them. It's just incredibly poor business practices

They send several email reminders about your appointment to assure you wont forget. I didn't mind this and actually appreciated it. Once we arrived, they were just as pleasant in person as they were over the phone. Overall, their service is great. The people were nice and we had very minimal wait time. When you go to the back, the exam areas are open. They are simply separated by cabinets. Your exam area is semi-private depending on which location you get. People walking pass and you out in the open for everyone to see. There are no TV's or monitors in each exam area either. So idle time while they work in your mouth is definitely boring. And unlike our other dentist - they didn't have the fancy massage chairs. I'm picking here - I get it. But I have quickly learned that these extra things matter. Our visit went super smooth. My son felt relaxed with the Dentist. But we only went for a brief exam and x-rays. So we were literally in and out within 15 minutes. Crazy fast. Our second visit, started off great. We arrived and they got us in super fast again. They got my son comfortable and were preparing him for his procedure but they pulled out the needle and well he just freaked out. I mean he didn't go crazy but once they stuck in the needle in and poked him, he was having a difficult time keeping his mouth open. I don't believe it helped that they didn't have the right size mouth bite piece either. So I tried to talk to him and get him to behave and open his mouth but the dentist just stopped and said no, he had to go somewhere else. I get it - they are not a pediatric dentist. But they were considered because they are supposed to be a family dentist. They recommended us to a pediatric dentist. But after that - I felt some kind of way. The dentist was annoyed and you could tell. Her and her assistant hurried us out of there. Instead of asking me about a preferred area or whatever - they just gave me a list and shunned me out. Because they refused to work on my son, I would think that they would have canceled any future appointments. But they did not. It was a good thing I called to check because I would have hate to have been billed for a no-show. In the end - I still would recommend this place - just not for your kids. And I will take my son back to our regular dentist. We were just trying to find another dentist for a certain procedure. Our regular dentist is not listed as a pediatric dentist either but she works with my son, and they don't use needles on the kids. They have this awesome machine that is perfect for numbing people without having to use needles. My man actually has his appointment here in the next two weeks so I am sure he will have a better experience. Maybe it's my fault for having a son scared of needles but I wish I wouldn't have felt so horrible after that experience.

After my first visit I had a detailed treatment plan and got lucky and was able to schedule my fillings and cleaning for the following day. Kandiss was my hygienist and was caring and thorough. The assistant to Dr. Godwin ensured that the numbing was complete before I received any shots and for the first time I didn't even feel them. The work Dr. Godwin performed for my filings is amazing. They are perfectly smooth and unnoticeable. Overall I had an excellent experience and highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for a caring and efficient office. The dentist I saw was incredibly kind and thorough. She conducted a comprehensive checkup to ensure there were no signs of infection or inflammation, and even ordered a CT scan of my teeth to make sure nothing was missed. After discussing the numbness and its progression, she gently suggested that it might be Bell's Palsy. However, to rule out the very slight chance of a stroke, she advised me to have someone take me to the emergency room immediately. The staff were all extremely kind and professional, and they asked only that I call and update them on my condition after my ER visit. I felt genuinely cared for, and I believe that level of care is the best any industry can offer its customers. Oh and it is Bell's Palsy. I should be right as rain in a few weeks to a few months.

Not certain where the quality of customer care has gone, but the treatment I received from Dr…read more Nagel's office manager fell well below acceptable standards of practice. I fully understand that, due to fraud concerns, many facilities now request ID verification--and I have no issue complying with reasonable requests. However, what I will not accept is being pressured or browbeaten into allowing my driver's license or Social Security number to be uploaded into a system against my will under the false claim that "it is the law." There are no state or federal laws that require patients to upload their driver's license or SSN into a medical facility's system (with very limited exceptions, such as certain government-related cases). Office policy is not the same as law. To make matters worse, the office manager openly discussed my insurance coverage in the waiting area, within earshot of other patients. When I respectfully leaned in and let her know I was standing directly in front of her and that there was no need to speak so loudly about my personal information, she continued anyway. That disregard for patient privacy was both inappropriate and unprofessional. Her tone and behavior also suggested that my insurance somehow warranted lesser treatment, which is completely unacceptable. She doubled down by continuing to misrepresent office policy as "law" and insisting again that I provide my license. When I refused, she then demanded my Social Security number, which I also declined. She claimed I should have received documentation about this "law" when enrolling in my insurance. I informed her I had not and asked her to provide the law she was referencing. Unsurprisingly, she could not--because it does not exist. Let's be clear: patients are not obligated to provide their driver's license, Social Security number, or consent to having their information uploaded or photographed without their free will. These practices are often tied to internal policies, not legal requirements. At the end of my visit, I informed the receptionist that the interaction at the front desk had made me extremely uncomfortable and that the office manager should have known better. I also advised that staff should be mindful of how they communicate with patients--you never know someone's professional background. For context, I previously managed a medical facility and am well-versed in the difference between policy and law. If this is how new patients are treated, I would be very concerned about the experience of existing ones. Needless to say, I will not be returning to this practice. I am accustomed to a standard of care that prioritizes the patient, not the dismissive and unprofessional treatment I received today. I am appalled. --Tanya C.
