AWARENESS: Anytime I stay or visit the Point Loma area of San Diego, I head here the NEX for either cheap gas or, snack food items. NARRATIVE: I recently stayed at the Naval Base Point Loma Annex and ended up driving here the NEX for cheap gas, not knowing the gas station was temporarily closed for refurbishment. So, I did the next thing I could do. I went inside to check out the prices of alcohol and to buy a few red "bomb" burritos. Because this NEX isn't near any of the big bases, they seem to carry a little bit of everything. From alcohol and snacks to, uniform items for both enlisted and officer's. It's a nice place to grab something quick but, you may pay more for the convenience. SCENE: This NEX store (number 472) and gas station are located on Nimitz Blvd at Rosecrans St. During normal business hours, there are no gates or guards to keep you out but, the gas station normally has an attendant who checks for authorized persons and, if you shop inside the store. They will require ID on check-out. RECOMMENDATION(S): Not a huge store but, the NEX gas station prices are normally $.5 and maybe more cheaper than a civilian station. If you have a Star Card. You'll also receive an additional $.5 cents per gallon off gas pumped. read more

Staff is friendly and professional. They have a Pep Boys on Site. This NEX is a vital resource for Pt Loma, the ASW base and Sub base.

Understand what you've got here. With two other major Navy exchanges in the area (32nd St and North Island), this small NEX fits the bill. Of course it's not full size, but the location and what they do carry is just about right. If you're staying at the Point Loma Naval Base on Echo Rd (Point Loma Naval Mine Anti-Submarine Warfare Command), this NEX is located off base. It's a short walk (or drive) up North Harbor Dr and then a few blocks up Nimitz Blvd (right at the corner of Rosecrans St.). There's actually a small shoppette on base but this is bigger than that. One nice thing located inside is the Ticket & Tours office. You'll find really good discounts on attractions in the area. And as others have mentioned, this is the place to go to gas-up your jalopy. read more

As a retired Navy guy, I'm loving the fact that this gas station and mini-mart are located right in the heart of Point Loma. I come to Point Loma often to meet with friends and enjoy a bonfire at Shelter Island and this place is my slice of financial relief from the outrageous gasoline and food prices that are prevalent all throughout this area. The NEX is stocked with just about anything that one might need from a smaller convenience style store. Think 7-11 meets Wal-Mart all under one roof without the 7-11 price mark up. This place is great for small shoping like for a road trip , movie night or if you just don't feel like going to the supermarket. As for uniform items you are limited on just the basic items. I can only comment on the gas station since I didn't go inside the min-mart. It seems pretty fast and efficient-- no lines when I pulled in. This was only the second time I had gone to an NEX that was off base, so I had learned that you have to show your ID to the cashier before you can start pumping :-) It's a great location if you are in Point Loma or around Liberty Station, centrally located on the corner of Rosecrans and Nimitz. But it's small, so you might blink and miss it! read more

I like this place , It has everything you may need for a road trip and they also carry a organics section too. Mini Mart type with lots of goodies and even clothes in case you need a quick change. Convenient place if you're in the area and want to pick up something. In the back they have a hair salon and a tailor. I come here when I run out of snacks and got a good deal on soda, $4 for a 12-pack of La Croix seltzer is a really good deal, and I like the luxury shampoos they sell in the back of the store. 'This has a little of every thing. However, it would be nice to have a coffee bar like the rest of them. You can also get your Tickit's there and get a hair cut as well that all in one place. The people are really nice and very helpful. There more help then most of them it seem like one of those country old stores were everyone one knows everyone. I have been there a few times and they all ready know my names wow impressed. There is also a gas station and a Mechanic shop there so you should go if you can. Ok, this place pretty decent. But you are limited on the stock at hand. Usually, if it is not located here, it is best to go down to 32nd street or the North Island exchange. I do use the gas station regularly here because it's cheaper than the outside prices. They also have a Red Box outside, and an auto repair shop that can do some limited services such as an oil change, tire change, brake and engine flush services as well. There's a DMV equivalent lady inside that does registration and vehicle paperwork too for a small fee. Again, this exchange is limited in stock. Not as many tv's, clothes and electronics. They do have some uniforms, and plenty of snacks. read more

I had a bad experience at the auto shop. I went in for new tires and before ordering and bringing my car in I asked if they were capable of working on it, as it it is not a new/normal/everyday car. Of course they said they could. Upon dropping the car off to get the tires mounted I received numerous calls of issues they were having because the mechanic was not familiar on how to work on the car. Finally I was told they couldn't work on it and I came to pick up the vehicle, and they had damaged my wheel studs, saying it was my car that was broken... I just had it in the shop one week prior with no issues having the wheels removed and remounted for brake work. I now have to take it somewhere else to get tires and FIX what they broke. read more

This NEX is tiny. The one in Chicago is probably double the size. This NEX is strictly groceries. Everything else is only partial. If you want deals on items id much rather go to target. But the NEX is just closer That's the only good side. I figured out where the government can start saving money. Fire anyone who works at the gas station pump. I don't know how much they are making but we're definitely wasting money. Most places that are a military gas stations the pumps will not work unless you prove you belong there. At this place as long as you don't make eye contact you don't have to show your ID. Either put someone there willing to do the job or fire them all and just go off the honor System. Especially the redhead! read more

I LOVE being able to buy some of the most inexpensive gas in the county! I've been coming here for years. The mini-mart/exchange isn't so bad either. You'll be able to find some inexpensive groceries, without the tax! I wish I could be a military dependent for life. read more

A rather small exchange. It has your bare essentials but I wouldn't go here if you're looking for specifics or to make a shopping trip out of it. There are a lot of other NEX's close by that is a better option unless you need one every day item. read more

Been coming here for my haircuts years and years. Zen is my "go to" person does a fabulous job. Very friendly, nice, accommodating. John is my back up on weekends when weekdays don't work. Super friendly, nice does a great job too. The third barber not such a great haircut. read more

This NEX is in a good area. I am glad I can go get a deal from the navy as Vons and Ralphs charge allot for something I can get at the NEX for half. I will go there before I go to the local grocery. Every thing I need is there uniforms, food, beer, get a hair cut and buy tickets to sea world. Love it. Only issue I have is the gas station attendant she is an ID NAZI. read more

5 stars is for the great customer service we received from Lolita in the Jewelry Dept. She was such a pleasure to work with. She was NOT pushy at all. She was very patient. We went in to look for an upgrade for my wedding ring and she listened to everything I asked for. I knew exactly what style I wanted which she stated made it alot easier for her. when I found one I really liked she still didn't force me to get it. She let me wear it on my finger for awhile to make sure it was the right one. Before this place my husband and I have been to every jewelry store ...and by far to tell you the truth, not only did i absolutely love my ring that I found at the NEX, but it was also because of the amazing service she gave us that helped make up my mind. All the other jewelers we went to kept forcing me to like the ring when I wasn't completely satisfied and They kept pushing my husband to convince me as well. They were trying to make a deal instead of making me happy. The NEX also had great deals and with the no tax it was hard to walk away. I left there in tears and had Lolita in tear also because she saw how happy I was with it. She also complimented our love and our marriage, she said she could see how much we adored each other and understands the meaning behind finding the perfect upgrade. Thank you Lolita for your help! I like this nex and it's selection. Some of the employees are really nice and helpful. The rest are extremely rude and condescending. I went to go to the MWR office and the sign said be back in 3 hours...I asked the lady at the register why it's closed for so long and she said it was a "lunch" break. A 3 hour lunch break? So i went back 3 hours later and she told me she just sold all her AMC tickets to a command. So I wasted two trips and just ended up paying full price anyway. The employee at the register looked at me like I was an idiot when I asked why she would be gone for almost half her shift? These people could care less if they waste your time and money. read more

Horrible haircut! I came here in hopes that they could fix a botched job done by Johnny's Barber Shop down the street. What I got was a grossly uneven taper that makes me look like I have spots. I had much bigger expectations since this is a Navy barbershop. I should've refused to pay for such a chop job. Thanks for nothing people. I'm resorting to buzzing my head with my neighbors clippers. What a waste of my day-off and hard earned money. I'm required to give a star value, but if it was an option they'd get nothing. Don't waste your time here. read more

Um I'm not sure what most of the people on here are thinking... This is a small NEX, yea. Cause it's not on a base, where they have more room... If you want everything in 1 stop, go to 32nd street. This is the equivalent of a NEX grab n go. It's not meant to carry tons of products or have everything you might want. They carry the basics for military personnel and offer gas n a repair shop. And yes, they will ID you for well everything. Why? It's the military! But this place is great and while the station attendants can be a lil annoying checking IDs to pump gas, it's also clearly stated on the pump that you have to, regardless if you have tags. And the people that work there have always been strict, but friendly and helpful. The prices and location are great. And ROSE is the nicest n most helpful person I have dealt with in a long time. This facility is small, but helps service the local military housing near this complex. It's basic, but supportive with Auto Services & Shoppette type layout with Some Commissary items. Only thing this facility lacks is customer service. Gas station and service station has no customer service at all. It's tragic and has been needing attention from NEX Command. read more

Ok so I frequently visit this exchange cause it's literally behind my house and most of my visits are in and out. I don't care to much for the size of the store or the uniform products since I'm a civilian and my husband is a Marine the uniforms don't apply to us. I simply go for the snacks and last minutes items I need. I must say some of the employees are very rude and don't know the meaning of great customer service. Well since I'm not in the service and I am not a man I feel like sometimes some of the women ignore me for those two reasons. You can totally tell that's the issue since this one employee in particular will smile and greet the male customers and totally put on another face when she helps me. I don't know if its just me she does that to but it has happened more then once. I have told my husband to ask her for help and Jesus does she smile, laugh and flirt and as soon as she noticed he was my husband she changed her demeanor. I have contemplated on talking to the manager but lo behold their related so what can a girl do? Suck it up and deal with it, I am not going to stop coming to this store because of one rude a** employee. It's small, convenient and cheap. read more

In fact, much better. Picture this, 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18th. A 90-year-old career Navy veteran, enters and buys $30 of miscellaneous items. He's been a loyal customer since this NEX opened maybe 40 years ago. He has a bit of Alzheimers and forgot his regular Navy ID. However, he showed another Navy Veterans picture ID. The manager said, "Oh no, no, no, you must have your proper ID". Incredulous, he was assisted out of the building by his daughter. Other Navy personnel, customers, witnessing this, were also amazed. I have been using this facility for over 15 years and have not found any form of customer service offered. I have had numerous occasions of conflict involving the same woman at the gas station. I do not know her name because she wears no name tag and has refused to tell me her name several times. I finally had enough of this woman and tried to get a manager to respond. I was given the name of the manager by another employee who came out. I finally linked up with the so called Manager WARD who basically denied my complaint against her and then claimed another customer witnessed incident and wrote a note saying it was all my fault. I will not longer use the gas station at this location. There are only two Diesel pumps on the same island and a set of unleaded pumps located just before them. The two cars in front of me were unleaded type vehicles and so I pulled thru station and tried to use the pump when this woman went off on me about driving around etc..... I tried to explain to her the other cars block the ability for using Diesel only pumps and that I did not cut anyone off. Long story short I will pursue my complaint to NEX Command. I hope others will see this and post their own experiences as I found two others who have also had issues with this same woman. read more
