It never ceases to amaze me that the third horse afterthought in a two magazine race when magazines…read moremattered (TIME, Newsweek and oh yeah, US News) somehow became the most influential arbiter of college selection among students, parents and the university academicians who sell sheepskin for a living (and BTW, US News does the same for hospitals and health care facilities as well.) No one really knows why this happened but in this climate where algorithms rule the earth and dark web metrics mete out advantage and social currency in the inscrutable language of ones and zeros, US News seems to have the "best and the brightest" waiting with baited breath to see if their very expensive mortar boards mean anything beyond the rankings - especially since the US News methodology is anything but open kimono. For elite institutions such as the community college in my neck of the woods, Princeton University, there's really nothing to worry about as their perennial top three finish helps drive even more futile applications and makes their acceptance rate even more exclusive and expensive. For second-tier colleges a decent ranking can literally help keep the doors open as college eligible demographics continue to dwindle. Basically, for all of their complaining, the schools are highly complicit in this process, supplying US News with tranches of data but never knowing exactly how it's tumbled and what weight is given to subjective factors like reputation and faculty quality. Maybe, these cloud minders in academia are not nearly as smart as we give them credit. A few schools have now begun to push back against this lack of transparency but maybe they bristle at these statistical interlopers simply because they no longer control the narrative and good, bad or ugly, these rankings give students and their soon to be bankrupt parents a readily accessible "objective" resource to help narrow their choices. I have been on enough college visits over the years to realize that most talking points out of the admissions office are virtually identical pablum making the presence of US News essential reading. God forbid your precious progeny risks a life of destitution and poverty by becoming a plumber. My plumber happens to drive a Range Rover... go figure. Like I said, this is quite an achievement for a magazine that was always an also-ran among newsweeklies. They carved out a niche where they can thrive. Good for them. Whatever their shortcomings, I give "US Schools" a five star PhD for their sheer audacity.

Amid, I did not purchased a paid subscription either print or online I am able to gain access to limited news sent to my in-box. The daily free email breaking news alerts works for me. It is well written of sentence structure, grammar, spelling and easily to comprehend in layman's terms without technical words or political jargons. I prefer The New York Times for its long history and reputation in the newspaper industry, but I am opened to other print or online news medium. Sometimes one news medium provider may report an event/incident that its competitor may have missed or dismissed in the belief of not significant news worthy material to be reported because "knowing is half the battle."

They do some excellent global reporting on complex issues, usually how it relates to the Middle East. There's a lot of talk about the bias of the main stream media, and this network certainly does have its own agenda. But what network doesn't have its own agenda? I think it's important to get news from several different sources, each with its own side of the story to get a multi-faceted viewpoint on current events, to help form a more balanced opinion on what's happening. Al Jazeera offers a station all in English, for an American audience. They have reporters all over the world on scene as things unfold across the globe. The reporters use American idioms, and are easily understood. They don't just focus on what's happening in the Middle East, but also in the United States, but still through a Muslim lens. Overall, it helps foster understanding between the western world and the Middle East. The station is available over Free To Air (FTA) satellite, or you can stream it live on YouTube, or their website.

TNR stock takes a precipitous fall. ----- The production values of TNR have gone up now that they publish every two weeks (as opposed to every week), although I can't discern any difference in the paper stock. Franklin Foer (yes, his brother is you know who) has done a good job as Editor-in-Chief. The articles, as promised, are longer and more involved. It remains to be seen whether he can maintain this for the duration of his tenure. Which, in TNR terms, is usually sixteen months. I don't necessarily agree with their politics (and it is first and foremost a political mag). I read it because bien-pensant and Harvard Professor of the Practice of Literary Criticism (which is, like, THE most pretentious academic title ever) James Wood (not Woods) will drop in from time to time and lob a curt, venomous, and always fascinating review of a current book. I appreciate his acerbity regarding the sacred cows of our era (Rushdie, Pynchon, Roth...they have all incurred his wrath), and respect his almost Arnoldian dedication to questions of belief, morality, and style in our impoverished era. Plus this is where Helen Vendler -- a great poetry critic and a sweet, unassuming grand dame -- tore into the posthumous Elizabeth Bishop collection "Edgar Allan Poe and the Jukebox," which accomplished the rare feat of bitchslapping not one but TWO eminences grises of the poetry world: Liz Bishop and editor Alice Quinn (Poetry Editor of The New Yorker).
