Sad they downsized and moved into the mall. But they are still awesome.

His inventory isn't computerized so that's kind of a bummer, but he seems to keep himself organized…read moredespite this fact. Also, he can be hard to pin down. The first few times I tried to reach him in the store (this was over 6 months ago) he wasn't in the store during normal advertised hours. His rules are pretty fair. He doesn't charge a fee to open an account. You can come get clothing after 60 days (or more - it's not a hard and fast rule). He prices everything on his own and the price does go down after 30 days. I managed to sell about half my things for $70. I did spend a fair amount of time trying to get in touch with him. On my second visit I texted him via facebook and he failed to mention that he wasn't taking in any more clothing which I brought with me to the store. I was little miffed. Overall, Ian is a nice guy and has a handle on Men's brands and what clothing is worth and what will sell. If anything, he could use a bigger space and perhaps a computer! One last tip - I guess people prefer older stuff to newer stuff with tags so keep that in mind when cleaning out your closet!

I have also purchased items here and LOVE the "Band Shirts" and Classic Rock Memorabilia. Sometimes I just go there to socialize with the terrific staff and clients. I have run into some members of the South Shore Music Community, who enjoy this place as much as I do. The "Squire 2" Bass Guitar that I bought here has become my main axe even though my other bass was 4X as expensive. I also have bought some antique ethnic instruments that adorn my walls, and a Concert T-Shirt that I will be giving as a Christmas Gift to my Sister. So, as a consignor AND a Customer (and a FRIEND), I can't say enough good stuff about this place. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

A big building, a good layout, and there is a barn next door too. Walking through was nice as I did not feel as though I'd bump into something. This place is no…read moreexception ... you'd do much better on a lot of the stuff on EBay or at a garage sale, for sure. But, its fun to look ... especially since it's rained almost every @%!& day in July and what else does one do in the rain on Cape Cod than browse and shop? First of all ... the used records pulled me in. The selection was pretty picked over. Barely any classic rock of note ... lots of jazz and eclectic stuff. However, HUGELY overpriced and the condition of many records was a bit rough. Some pricing examples ... The Doors, Soft Parade original in VG+ condition was $45. Owch. Lots of Beatles records for $30 - $100. Edith Piaf album I paid $2.50 for on EBay was over $12. You have to bring the copies of the over $15+ albums to the counter to inspect the condition. The vinyl section was crowded but honestly, not many bargains to be had. They have LOTS of stuff ... the store is a long barn and filled to the brim. There was a wall of 'vintage' Nautical paintings of sailors for $150 - $350, depending on the size. To me, they looked like they were painted recently. While cool, in a retro-kitchy fashion, the price was steep for a faux vintage Sea Captain painting. There were cases of old toys, costume jewelery and other antique stuff. I saw a couple authentic British Pub signs for $500 which were cool. They had some vintage cameras but many were untested and the same price as the tested ones online. The vintage typewriters had keys which were stuck and were priced the same as tested working ones online. I walked out empty-handed but I give 4 stars because it was a good way to spend an hour browsing on a rainy day. The only thing I was considering buying was a jazz record I wanted to listen to that night but it had a pretty scuffed surface, so I passed. Three people in front of me bought records ... maybe they were luckier or less picky. You may find something cool here but don't plan on finding inexpensive treasure. At the very least its fun to look.

So many Karens reviewing this place ... sheesh! To address the elephant in the room, yes ... this…read moreplace is expensive and maybe a bit overpriced. However, just like if you went to any specialty store ... you are going to pay more for the curating of inventory, the satisfaction of the instant gratification of a purchase and also the overhead. Too many people expect the world of brick and mortar to conform to Amazon prices these days which is just not fair to small shop owners. That being said, this place is about 20% more expensive than other record stores I've been to ... but their selection is 40% better. This place has new and used vinyl ... rare stuff, obscure stuff, weird stuff. And it's all in pretty good shape. I was a bit put off by the fact they don't use the Mint, NM, VG, Good, etc. standard rating system ... and they don't let you visually inspect the actual records until you bring them to the counter. However despite small labels which say 'fine' ... 'plays well' ... 'clean copy' ... 'super clean' ... 'good' I'd rather the known grading scale. The owner told me all records were play tested, cleaned and passed his standard for listenability. That's a heck of a better deal than you'll find on EBay even for graded records, which are often visually inspected. The selection here is great and you can tell it's owned by a music lover vs. someone who just happens to own a shop. The jazz and blues section are particularly well stocked and the new records have many limited editions. One bummer is that they have only a small bargain section where used records in what I'd call VG- or Good condition are $2.50 - $8. I bought 4 bargain records here and two were unplayable ... one was very warped at the edges and the other skipped in several places. It was only $10 for these records but I had to throw 2 of them out. I'd advise to skip the bargain bins. You'll not find much for under $15-$20 in the regular store but the quality is true and tested there. They have some older equipment and turntables and tons of framed concert posters from the 1960's and autographs on the walls which is all for sale. It's fun walking around as it's almost like a hard rock cafe. The other rooms contain a huge selection of incense, hippie clothes, Eastern decor and typical 'head shop' type stuff. The clientele ranged from high school students buying posters and 'tobacco pipes' to older folks looking to pick up some vinyl. The store is pretty close quarters as an old Victorian house converted to a store but its cool just to walk around and channel the 1960's. Don't come here hoping to bargain shop in search of vinyl. However, the selection and love of music that went into collecting all of this to sell is impressive. The owners are a bit salty but I'm sure that has to do with putting up with a lot of high school kids, stoners and tourist types and price complainers over the years. If you are in the Cape and like vinyl or the 1960's, it's a fun stop to make.

WHO'S AFRAID OF THE BIG BAD, Independently owned and operated, used book store?!?…read more As a traveler passing through a few of the sleepy Cape Towns on the off-season, I stumbled across Greg's while walking Orleans' main street where I encountered a sign propped up against a brick wall bearing a stylized image of Medusa's Mean Mug and reading "Greg's Used Books Around Back". Undeterred and unturned to stone, my buddy and I made a left 'round the building and then a quick right where we saw the entrance to Greg's shop. The entry way was a staircase that lead us down to what we soon learned was considered to be by the political pearl clutchers in the area, Orleans' own underworld. Perhaps they were right, in a sense, given that a book about the blues bearing Robert Johnson's image was the first thing my eyes caught in the enclosed glass case of books near the entrance. Were we about to make a faustian deal of our own? Having descended down below, my buddy and I soon found ourselves in a relatively small yet incredibly well and interestingly stocked book store with posters of Jim Morrison and the Doors decorating the walls, amongst other things. We looked around for a bit and came across not only books, but also true relics from the 80's and 90's, including vhs tapes, boxed super famicom games with beautiful box art, etc. We were eventually greeted not by a Gorgon, but Greg himself, who was really a character and in the best sense of the term. Our conversation with him ran the gamut from owning and operating a business like his to politics, philosophy, and literature. He was a really cool, well versed, interesting, and friendly guy and without any pretense. For that, I respect him and his shop, which I gladly supported with my business. All in all, my experience at Greg's was Good. Everything was reasonably and fairly priced and it turns out that it isn't the underworld that some in town have made it out to be. In fact, perhaps in a world of confusion and inversion, a descent down into Greg's used book store is really a move up.
