Aweful. Plain and simple. Guess it was my mistake for going in at 7:30pm not knowing they closed at 8:00pm. Clearly they served me old unsold weiners that spent their last hours on the grill before hitting the trash. Tough as shoe leather, and tasted like rotten meat. I got 6 to go with the works. Had i stayed i would have brought them right back up to the counter. This woman sold me old rotten weiners just to get rid of them thinking she was saving a buck by doing so. Not really though...she wasn't thinking of the big picture. Now I will never return as eating from a dumpster would be a better option, and I know lots of people read these Yelps. Oh yeah and theres the good old fashioned "word of mouth". Please note I used to go here when the same owner (not sure his name) was behind the counter any time you would go in. Guess he sold it. Your journey begins by driving down Main St in Woonsocket. You'll pass empty storefront after empty storefront and, if you look close enough, no fewer than 3 hookers. Pull into one of the lots by this little hole in the wall and walk inside to an old school diner. While waiting in line you'll be packed elbow to elbow with other patrons as well as hovering over the meals of the folks who took up a seat too close to the register. There is a back room with plenty of seating, but for whatever reason, few seem to make it that far. Now, if you're me, you'll order 4 "all the way". You could choose to leave some ingredients off, but the hot dog, celery salt, mustard, onions, and meat sauce all bring something to the table and I don't think you're doing it right if you leave one out. Now comes the fun part; watching your dogs being made. First he'll whip out some hot dog buns that somehow manage to be both stale and soggy at the same time. Then he'll line them up and down his arm. I hear that there are new owners and that they now use gloves, but back in the day the owner of the place would put the buns directly onto his hairy, sweaty arms. It may sound gross, but true weiner aficianados will tell you that the arm sweat added a certain something. Next he'll uncover small hot dogs that are of an orangey/brownish color that you just can't find anywhere else. After the celery salt is sprinkled and mustard is applied the meat sauce will come out. I can't even begin to guess what is in that mystery sauce and chances are that I really don't want to know. Now that I think of it, that's probably why the onions go on last. They help to cover up the looks of the meat sauce so that you don't have to get too close of a look at it. Throw back your dogs and you will leave full. Granted it's not a satisfied, hearty lunch type of full. It's more of a "OH MY GOD, my poor stomach, what did I do to myself!?" type of full. Why would I tell such a horror story and yet still give this place 4 stars? Why do I return time and time again and make it a point to stop by for lunch if I'm in the area? Because the weiners here are damned tasty. They're not for the feint of heart (I'm serious, those with pre-existing heart conditions should order a burger if not just avoid the place all together), but the brave souls who are willing to step up to the counter are rewarded. We have been coming here for years, never an issue. We usually come on a Saturday for lunch with the kids. Tonight we decided to come for dinner on a Thursday night. Bad idea... workers are not so friendly, not mean or anything, but don't seem happy you are there. We usually order fries, onion rings weiners, and tenders. Everything was over cooked and my son's weiner had a piece of hair in his weiner sauce. A woman's hair, or a guy with longer hair! Even the weiner sauce was dark, hard, very disappointing. If, and that's a big IF, we go back there, it will be on a Saturday where people are friendly and know how to make food. read more

Extremely friendly service (from the cook/owner?, a little less from the lady at the cash register) in a place with a tiny crowded counter and a larger empty dining room. Hot dogs with the works and coffee milk are the main items on the menu, and both are good....I was a little concerned seeing all the wieners just sitting there in the open being heated on that roller thing, but as I did not wind up in the hospital, and they were tasty, everything must have been okay. I'm told this place has been here some 100 years, and some of the patrons look like they've been here almost that long..but all of them were friendly. Many nights after drinking up a storm at the Hillside, you`d sneak down the secret stairs in back right to NY Lunch! This was back in the 80`s and 90`s. Since moving out of state in 2003, I always stop by when I`m back in town. The food is great, drunk or sober. Like many others have said, get the fries and coffee milk with your order. Saw a positive review on the Phantom Gourmet about this place thought I would try it out. Ordered two dogs all the way which included mustard, meatsauce, grilled onions and salt and pepper. With all those ingredients I only tasted the steamed bun and the snap of the hotdogs not too much flavor at all dissapointing. read more

Nothing like the original NYS, it might be a matter of opinion but they just don't seem to have it quite right. Onions were old and meat sauce was lacking something. I could look past the different take on the hot wiener, but when the place is filthy and in dis-repair. It's hard to want to return to give it a second chance. Favorite place for some good old fashioned New York style wieners. (Onions, meatsauce, mustard, celery salt) You don't have to go too far into woonsocket to get them and they are on point every time you go. Inside there is tons of art and old fashioned signs all around the diner. If you decide to stay and eat, you won't be bored l, as there is so much to look at. VERY friendly workers, and they assist you basically as soon as you walk in the door. You get to watch them make your wieners, in whatever way you prefer them. "The works" is how most people want their order of wieners. If you've never tried this New York styled wiener place, it is a must. Sometimes, if I go home without offering my mom any she can smell the New York styled wieners on me and yells at me for going without her or not bringing her back any. They have been there for as long as I've known, and they are my go to quick food if i am starving. They are also very cheap. They offer most diner foods - breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They also have speciality cakes, pies, and desserts out front behind the bar counter to pick from. Coffee milk from here is also a favorite of many. They always have deals for food combinations posted in hand writing near the menus at the front. I came from Mass with a friend to check this place out for the first time. Woonsocket is an interesting old, albeit fairly depressed old mill town on the Blackstone River. The few passing cars hinted at the staggering poverty in the area. The dam on the river across the street was pretty (except for the tire resting on a rock below in the river below the falls). Parking is abundant. New York Lunch is a charming, compact throwback to the 1960s with Rexall-style counter seating with a view of hundreds of stacked, bagged hot dog buns and a crowd of small, orange wieners turning on a rolling wiener grill. There's also a cozy dining room with booth seating. We chose the dining room, which was really nicely decorated with photos and memorabilia from times past. The whole place appeared to be clean. There were a few other diners. Our waiter was an easy-going, down-to-earth and gregarious guy, clearly proud of this venerable establishment. He suggested the House Favorite, the Three All-Around - three wieners with "meat sauce", mustard, onions and celery salt. Fries or onion rings. We chose the fries. Soon, we were presented with our lunches on white paper plates. The wieners were unappetizing to look at. The buns were untoasted white bread. I assumed they'd be toasted or grilled, the way they are up in Boston. The buns, which were normal size, were too big for the little wieners. The dogs, only peeking out at the ends, were that strange, dull burnt orange color I'd noticed on the grilling apparatus. Only, seen up close, the color was even less appealing, and the dogs were very small and skinless, with no plumpness. Not good signs. I was hoping for "snap", and based on their appearance, these dogs promised to lack any kind of snap. The chopped onions were on top, and looked to be parboiled to soften their flavor. Under the onions, I could see what had to be the "meat sauce". It was an unappealing shade of brown, with a chili-like consistency. I saw no mustard. It must have been the first condiment applied. (I would have squirted it over the "meat sauce" in a colorful curlicue, but apparently, no such thought of an attractive presentation occurred to the management). Our drinks and the small paper baskets of fries were brought to us with a friendly warning, "Be careful, these are hot!" So, with our drinks (a Diet Coke and a bottled water), and a bit of friendly banter with our host before he departed to let us "Enjoy!", I tried to muster some faux enthusiasm to do just that. I tasted the fries. They were cooked a little darker than medium color and crisp. As advertised, they were hot. A tad greasy, but a little ketchup from the big Heinz bottle on the table made them greasy-spoon yummy. I wished the fries order was bigger. I would have happily eaten my fill of just fries. The hot dogs had to taste better than they looked. After all, this is a decades old, "World Famous" hot dog place! Dear God. They SUCK. I wanted to spit it out, but since I wasn't raised in a barn, I forced myself to ultimately eat two of the three wieners on my paper plate, out of pure politeness. No part of the hot dog was hot. At best, it was lukewarm. NO SNAP. The bun was cold. It had an ever so slightly clay-like texture and was completely devoid of any flavor. Inside, the hot dog was a peach color, like flesh-toned particleboard, and tasted like it, too. It was dry, and had a sawdust-like texture. If it had any flavor of its own, it was entirely lost under the bland and granular "meat sauce". I wasn't at all sure that there was any meat in the wiener. I decided that it may be made of cornmeal. I couldn't help but wonder what was in their porridge-textured "meat sauce", but Alpo came to mind. I forbade myself from speculating further. I could neither see or taste any mustard. The last thing I noticed was an unexpected, mildly astringent, almost chemical aftertaste. Celery salt. I had forgotten the mention of celery salt among the "All-Around" toppings. It had a rancid taste, and yet, more grittiness. It was like that of something your mother might tell you never to put in your mouth. The onions on top had been pre-cooked to soften their flavor. This added culinary measure worked a bit too well; The onions were rendered fully wilted, and all but entirely flavorless. For my next unwanted bite, finding no mustard with which to doctor it, I squirted the aforementioned Heinz Ketchup all over my lunch in an effort to make it more palatable. It was a most unpleasant experience to now consume the rest of this and a second wiener, so as not to hurt the feelings of the proud waiter. Two stars, one for the really cool ambiance and one for the super-friendly staff. Save yourself the trip, or if you're nearby, not terribly hungry and really bored, go, but just get fries and maybe their famous Rhode Island coffee milk. I used to go there as a boy, back in the70's and dogs were I think 15 cents each, we would bring a bag full home and eat them at all hours of the night....I would go by there and watch the cook put the dogs and buns lined up his arm and just pour the sauce on them and I always wondered how he kept from burning his arm.....they had the best coffee milk, where I live now they don't even carry coffee milk, I have to order autocraft to put in the milk, its just not the same, I hope I spelled that right, oh well.....there is not a single food joint like new York lunch in this entire city....ask me why I live here, sometimes I wonder about that.....hope to get up that way soon, when I do, the second place I visit will be New York Lunch.....thanks for the memories..... read more

let me start off by saying - if you aren't getting the daily special with the works and coffee milk, you're doing it wrong. this restaurant is great, i've gone various times with various groups and each time it has been stellar. weiners are always great, tasty, and perfectly salty. fries are in great proportion but need to be salted slightly more. the enivornment is nostalgiac and friendly, creating a warm and greeting environment. love this place; veey quaint and great food. read more

After calling to verify they were open and getting there 30 minutes prior to 6pm they locked the doors and said they were closed. We ended up going to Lumberjacks in North Smithfield and enjoyed them just as much, if not even a little more. read more

Haven't been to New York Lunch in a long time, but it is definitely one of my favorite places to eat in Woonsocket. I have many happy memories of going there with my dad and my sister for dinner. I hope to go back there again and have some more of their delicious wieners. And you don't have to worry about emptying the wallet, either - the prices are very reasonable. I don't know what happened to this place it use to be half way decent. Recently purchased weiners to go and the weiners were so small and had no taste, they were horrible. Onions seemed old.
