Because I'm on a budget, I asked the hostess before seating what the price would be. She told me $20. After seating us, she casually asked my sister's age. As someone who currently works as a hostess myself, I assumed this was small talk -- because small talk is literally part of the job. She never explained that her age would change the price. Only when the check came did I realize the total was higher. When I raised it, I reassured her: "I am paying. I just need to correct you -- not once did you mention my sister's age would affect the price. You had every opportunity." Instead of acknowledging that, she flipped it back on me, saying "Well, you had every opportunity to read the signs." The tone wasn't clarifying, it was hostile -- I felt like she wanted to argue, and with my little sister beside me, I went into fight-or-flight. I gave her the grace I know customers often don't give service staff, because I am service staff. But I was treated like a scammer instead of a guest.
