Interesting and different. We ordered New Star to be delivered for dinner one night via DoorDash. The overall feel was modern and Americanized. The side of white rice was in a plastic container (not the traditional oyster pail box). Due to the heat, the plastic lid got warped and had me thinking if it released hazardous fumes into the food.... The order of chicken and broccoli was different than the typical chicken and broccoli commonly found elsewhere. The chicken....was actual chicken. As if it was an actual chicken breast cooked and cut up. It didn't have that soft, spongy and almost boiled feel that we are used to. The flavor was a little bland as well. The roast pork lo mein was decent. The crab rangoons were shaped like purse pouches (not the usual triangles elsewhere). Those rangoons were probably the best ones I've had in a long time and they were accompanied by a good amount of dipping sauce. Would we order again? Not sure. I ordered to go today for a party of eight at my house. We started with boneless spear ribs, then General Tso 's Chicken, Chicken with Broccoli, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Chicken with Cashews and Chicken with mixed vegetables. They gave me free Spring Rolls. I ordered ahead for a 6:15 pickup. They could not of been more accommodating. I ate some of the Moo Goo Pan, never had it before but really enjoyed it. My go to was the Chicken with Vegetables; that was very good. All the vegetables for both of my dishes were fresh and not over cooked. Plenty of cashews in the Chicken with Cashews ( check my photo) Everyone enjoyed the other meals and agreed with me on the quality and taste of the food. read more

While on the road I tried New Star in Guilford. This restaurant only offers takeout. The cooking area is very close to the ordering counter, so it was interesting to watch the chef cook while waiting for my order. They are very friendly, fast and efficient. For me the food was just OK. We ordered beef and broccoli and mixed vegetables. The mixed vegetables were delicious, with so much broccoli that I did not finish all of it. The beef and broccoli was OK, but with less beef than I am used to in this dish. It was also somehow different than how the meat in this dish is typically prepared at my local Chinese. Different mouth feel) and the broccoli was more cooked than I prefer. Taste was good and as expected. Everyone's tastes are of course different, so my comments might be a very different assessment from someone else. I suspect that New Star uses MSG, which can cause stomach distress in certain people. The reason I mention this is we frequently patronize a local restaurant that does not use MSG and my girlfriend never had an upset stomach, but had one after eating the food from New Star. Would I get a meal from New Star again? Probably, but not until I try the other Asian restaurant in town, to see if I experienced similar issues. I had no stomach upset after eating the same meal. In my estimation New Star offers good food, but not exceptional food. Portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. I came here for the first time for lunch. It is to-go only as it is tiny and has no seating. Looks very clean and new inside. I got the shrimp and broccoli lunch combo which came with an egg roll and pork fried rice. Everything was delicious and fresh. Definitely the freshest shrimp I think I've ever had in a Chinese take out dish. Service was great. I went in and ordered and waited about 5 minutes for my food. I'm excited to come back and order with the family to try out more things. I may have finally found a Chinese food place out here I like! read more

Sorry folks, save your money! I've been going to First Garden in Guilford for over 30 years! Something there is different, new faces and the food quality has dropped. So I noticed New Star when they first opened and decided that I would like give them a try. Tonight was the night and it was a huge mistake. Large Hot Sour soup, fried dumplings, shrimp egg foo young and chicken with mixed vegetables. $47.00! If it was half that it would still have been a waste of money. Although the order did resemble some form of food, what was lacking was flavor. Everything (and I mean everything) was the most bland and flavorless Chinese food I've ever eaten. No way on earth I would ever go back. They don't even deserve the one star I gave them. read more

Not a big fan, one of the turn offs was that they didn't have the pupu platter on their menu and the food was traditional Chinese food and didn't have a big yes feeling to it. VERY impressed. Food is not greasy and you can actually taste the vegetables. Inexpensive comparatively speaking and very quick. Super convenient location and very pleasant, appreciative staff. I've only had the combination plates and can't say I have a favorite. Everything I have ordered is exactly what I have wanted but very diverse. I love that they have a separate condiment station where you help yourself before you walk out so you can get the sauce that you desire. Honestly, my favorite quick lunch spot in Guilford. Big Mistake... egg rolls ok, wontons in wonton soup inedible, hard & thick dough, not cooked & couldn't tell what it was filled with. Soup itself tasteless, bright yellow flavored water. Finally got to try this new addition in Guilford. Not impressed. Egg rolls were cold, soggy and odd flavor. General Tsao's chicken was tough and more like sweet and sour sauce. Vegetables were fresh. Fried rice tastes like minute rice-a-roni. Pork egg foo young had a weird after taste. The only saving grace was the white rice. I much prefer more authentic Chinese food. My new favorite Chinese place! Absolutely DELICIOUS & NOT GREASY AT ALL!!! I live you exits away in Branford and where are you used to go? They recently closed a few months ago. I loved where I used to go. However, before I guess inflation they were even expensive and continue to raise prices. This place is NOT EXPENSIVE!!!! We had it this past Sunday as a take out birthday dinner for both my mother & I at my sister's house. I got the sesame chicken, dinner with the pork fried rice. It was SOO GOOD & BIG portion size. Obviously I had leftovers comes with egg roll. We also ordered a bunch of appetizers. 2 of the pork fried dumplings delish as well as the sauce!! The kids loved the edamame (2 orders) as well as the crab rangoon. Other orders that we had were some combo dinners as well: CKN & broccoli w/ white rice, General Tso's CKN, Sweet & Sour CKN. My mother is a vegetarian. She had vegetable lo mein which she absolutely Loved & had lots of veggies.. more veggies than other lo mein.other places I have gone to an even like before. My younger nephew also likes lo mien so he got chicken lo mien. They had snap peas in there as well as shredded carrots, water chestnuts. If you don't eat pork egg roll, you can opt to get a spring roll my mother & niece did. Even though my niece is only 8 she eats a lot of veggies she's very healthy. She alone ate a side of edamame & ate 2 dumplings (she eats mainly CKN/Turkey) but liked the dumplings which Chinese food is a treat. She had her spring roll as well as some of my mom's lo mein. She was pretty easy. She didn't want to order a meal. She tried a crab ragroon but only ate one. The kids do love seafood. They do like sushi, but she likes the California roll as well as the boys. Unlike my sister & brother-in-law. FYI: this place does not have any sushi. They gave us tons of fortune cookies as well. We also ordered soups, move my father and I each ordered more wonton soup. I took mine home. I think he ate his then. Need this to say a plethora of food. They give you tons of soy sauce, hot sauce. I didn't pick it up. I don't know how much it cost but I do have a menu so I saw the prices. There's more things on the paper menu that's on the web site. I know they just recently opened. I don't know if they will be expanding the menu. I do know that it's take out only. You cannot sit down inside and eat at in there. I have no idea if they deliver or not. They are located on Boston Post Rd In a shopping center next to the Dunkin' Donuts which also has carpenzano's pizza. I'm not sure what else is in there. It is on the south side of BPR but I will definitely be driving a few exits to get my take out or if I'm in the area driving by stopping by placing my order and waiting in my call while it cooks. Like I said, knock racy at all whether they use a different oil or whatnot. But it was the third time they've had food from there and it did not affect anybody's stomach nor mine. And there's a place up the road from me that I tried several times in each time it made me so sick. And then I tried the other place that I loved but was expensive and then unfortunately closed. And really was afraid to have to try new places, especially since I only eat it. Maybe it 3-4x's a yr. So I suggest if you like really really good Chinese food you should stop by and check it out. Next time I will take photos when I arrive on time and people have not started eating of all the food for at least of mine. But at that point I was too late to do so. 4.5 stars! Quality of Gen Tso's all white meat was excellent...with an abundance of pork fried rice. Hot and Sour soup was a tad TOO spicey hot, even for me. As mentioned in another review, egg rolls were on a smaller side than other area spots, and a bit doughy, but tasty. I ordered 2 meals online: Chicken chow mein and sweet & sour chicken. After picking up and driving home, I discovered they did not put the sweet & sour sauce in the bag. When I returned, I asked if I could have some extra sweet $ sour sauce and the reply was "No, it costs more money". After driving back home, I had more disappointment: The chicken was HEAVILY breaded with very little meat and the sweet & sour sauce was very thin with not much flavor. I'll no be back.
