If I'm being completely honest, during my recent week long stay in Troy, MI for work, I stopped by the New Saigon Market 4 of the 7 days. And the primary reason was their ah-mazing banh mi sandwiches. IMHO, the best in the entire city!!! The majority of the square footage at New Saigon Market is dedicated to the grocery portion of the business. There are aisles of Asian goods such as sauces, instant noodles, a refrigerated section of produce, and a freezer case of all types of dumplings, meats, etc. There was also a fun display of figurines near the window, including a Pikachu, which I purchased for my niece. Using both the Yelp app and recommendations from locals, they told me this place serves up legit and surprisingly, bargain priced Viet sammiches. When you walk in, the kitchen portion is near the registers. After perusing the menu, I ordered a number one combo and a chicken, since the roasted pork was sold out (boo!). And I was SHOCKED that in 2024, you can still find a banh mi for $5. In the DC area, you can't find one priced for less than $8.00!!! Tip: you can order your banh mi's either toasted or untoasted. Get the toasted. After approximately 5 minutes a friendly worker came out and presented the number one banh mi, in a foil wrapper. My chicken was not toasted so it was in a plastic bag. I couldn't wait, so I unwrapped the number one combo and literally DEVOURED it in the parking lot. The bread (which they make on premises) was toasty outside, yet had a flaky and soft interior. And while these aren't the biggest sandwiches, there was plenty of meat filling and pickled veggies, with just the right amount of pate smeared. Again, did I mention (as of this review) that it was only $5? They have a special menu on the weekends, so I also stopped by get some Bánh Bò Nướng (Vietnamese honeycomb green cake), Goi Cuong (summer rolls) and the Xôi Mặn (sticky rice with Viet ham and sausage). Everything was delicious and I walked out for about $20; which again, this would have been at least $10-$15 more in the DC area. If I lived here, I'd be at New Saigon Market several times a week. A sleepy little Asian grocery store with a very kind and helpful staff is home to one of the sleeper foodie spots in Metro Detroit! I can't speak much on the groceries because they don't carry my Filipino essentials, but boy am I here often for them BAHN MI BOIZ! $5 and you get your choice of protein between traditional pork cold cuts grilled pork, chicken, or fried fish patty. I love the bright pickled daikon and fresh cucumber, the spiciness of the sliced jalapenos, and the savory pate. They now sell prepared street foods during the weekends as well! For $5, the bahn mi's are a STEAL!! My friend and I both got the traditional, #1 and it was so light and refreshing. The meat with the pate spread was flavorful, the vegetables were super fresh, and the bread was crispy. I wish I had more meat in mine but can't complain much for the price point. We got the #1 traditional and drinks which were both yummy. I think the bread was a little tough compared to what I've had before but it didn't take away from the overall sandwich. Started hearing a lot of Yuzz (Yelp Buzz) about Saigon Market and their tasty Banh Mi Sandwiches. Then I noticed that I had already bookmarked it a while ago, so I moved it to my short list! We had Sushi for my wife's birthday yesterday so today was my birthday choice. Today being also Easter limited choices because so many places are closed. It came down to 99¢ Koneys or Vietnamese Banh Mi and, with a little nudge from my wife, I picked Saigon Market. We had been by here many times before and thought it was just another Asian Market. But then came the reviews for the sandwiches. We pulled into the one-way parking along the front, and found it fairly busy but still some parking spots open. So we parked, grabbed masks and gloves for Covid19, and entered. As soon as we entered, we saw the window for ordering the sandwiches to our left and the market off to the right. We decided to browse through the market first, and we started an aisle-by-aisle tour. We found many interesting things, and picked out a few items including Ginger Honey Tea and Fish Sauce (I was getting low on this). The people working there were very helpful, friendly, and answered our questions about the items for sale. Then we went to the window and ordered two Grilled Chicken, one Grilled Pork, and one Traditional Banh Mi. There were several items wrapped in Banana Leaf that we were told had Banana and Sticky Rice; so we took one of those as well. We then headed home to enjoy our feast. We laid everything out and then made the Ginger Honey Tea to have with our meal; it was delicious and a little punchy. Then I cut the Traditional and Grilled Pork in half to split. Traditional was good but I liked the Grilled Pork better. The home-made bread was fresh and crunchy -- which reminded us of an authentic French baguette -- and really made the difference. At this point we were both comfortably full so we took a break and enjoyed our tea and the Banana Sticky Rice Packet which was delicious! After a nap, we came back for the finale: the Grilled Chicken Banh Mi. I'd have to agree with many other Yelpers that the Chicken is probably our favorite! And the price of $4 each makes any of these sandwiches a total winner. read more

Such a cute mom and pop market. It's usually just the owners there I believe. Been around forever. They have a good variety I would say with produce. Not like Kim nhung. But the veggies seem really good quality. I've been going here since I was a little kid. Not much has changed. I really only go here if I want banh mi now. I don't normally go here for groceries. I started my pho / banh mi voyage this past Saturday at Que Huong across the street, and he suggested I try out Saigon Market for banh mi. (actually, I'm not a banh mi newbie, so I suppose it was just a pho voyage ...) I was seeing a movie at AMC John R today and so I decided to venture down to Saigon Market (13/John R area) to try out the banh mi. They are $4 each and they have both a regular board and a "gringo" board (English translations). The four varieties are traditional, pork, chicken, and fish, and I got one traditional and one pork to go. Minus a 1/2 star for them adding jalapenos (I asked for no jalapenos and now my mouth is on fire, again ...) but I'm eating it now and it's REALLY good. The cashier (owner? he greeted me when I arrived) said they make everything in-house, including the bread. Nom. Definitely recommend for your banh mi needs! Super nice guy running the cash register. This is actually a fun store to check out all of the different food offerings in the freezer. They have lots of different size cooking pots, ceramic bowls of all sizes, mixing bowls, knives for anything and everything, serving and cooking utensils, seasoning packets for soups or whatever. Teas galore, even some ginger and honey tea pods. Special offerings for the spiritual side, if you are so inclined. I would need a good hour to really go up and down each aisle and really check out everything in every nook and cranny of this store. I haven't really bought anything from the grocery store. I come here mainly to get the $4 bánh mì. This is one of the best places for take-out bánh mì. It usually takes around five minutes and you pay at the cash register. Love the cilantro and other veggies packed into the crispy toasted baguette. So much tastier and healthier than drive-thru fast food. Bring cash because there is a small charge for using a credit card at this grocery store. I've heard for years there's a stellar banh mi shop inside this market. There are no advertisements or signs on the outside of the store for banh mi. You step in and it's directly to the left of the entrance. Finally had the occasion to try it today and it is as the rumours say. Price post pandemic is $5 for a traditional #1, and well worth it. Also, buy ten and the 11th is free (fairly sure they mean in one visit). Will be back for sure. They're hot out of kitchen and still warm. There's a very thin, crackly crust of sugar on the outside when they're fresh - with a soft, almost custard like inside. We called ahead to make sure they were still selling their banh mi during the pandemic. Last I checked they usually stop selling their sandwiches around 5pm. We got to the market right around noon and ordered 2 of the traditional and 2 of the grilled pork banh mi to-go (only $4 each). We liked the traditional way more than the grilled pork. Grilled pork didn't live up to my expectations. It didn't have a grilled taste and the meat wasn't juicy enough. The traditional was much better. They pate was nice and salty and their pickled veggies tasted fresh. The best part of their sandwiches is their bread. The house made baguettes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Nothing will beat the fresh bread here! I've been back a few other times and each time, their traditional banh mi does not disappoint. Saigon Market is actually a small Asian market with a Banh Mi counter. I felt very at home in the market area - it looked like the standard mom and pop markets in my neighborhood back in NYC. The sandwiches weren't as good as my corner store in NYC, but it really hit the spot. They're also super cheap too at just $4 a sandwich! My last Banh Mi was a few weeks ago and BF's last one was in March, so I'm so happy we were able to find this place. Okay, so...I've not had better Bahn Mi in the area. For $4 each, these are delicious *and* satisfying. True: it takes two of them to make a meal for me, but what an enjoyable meal it is. You really have to appreciate the simplicity of the sandwich, which hits on just so many cylinders. The tastes, the textures, the surprising heat in the bites with jalapeño...and the bread, made in-house, apparently. Oh, yes, that's a very, very nice delivery system they've put together, here. I bought two, on faith, of the grilled pork type, and that was a lovely meal for me. One would be a nice snack, but two is good enough to feed me, and let me really enjoy the process of being fed. This, my friends, is very good food, made fresh, and in humble surroundings. I finally got in to check out the new Bahn Mi sandwich station. I think its been open for a month or two and they are doing one heck of a business. They were finishing up a take out order of 30 when I walked in. Standard $3.00 price for a really fresh sandwich. Its nice to see this open up since it is so hard to find Bahn MI in metro Detroit. Bahn Mi aside, the store is pretty awesome. I often stop in here after a bowl of Pho at Thuy Trang to pretend that I'm going to buy the core items to make it myself. Instead I end up spending hours staring at shelf items trying to figure out what they are. I buy pickled vegetables, mint, and basil here almost every time. White suburbanites beware: this place smells pretty funky 80% of the time. Blame it on the durian. Quick confession: I'm a dry food hoarder. As such, I can conclusively state that this is THE place to come for specialty rice. Red cargo, black long grain, jasmine, mixes- you name it, they likely have it. Have you priced long-grain rice at any of the big box grocers? It's like 5 bones for 8 ounces. OUNCES! That same amount of cash would get you pounds of rice at this place. What I really love about this place is the revolving selection of freshly prepared food. It seems like every sunday they bring out these little toasted sesame sweet breads, some of which taste very much like a plain donut. They also have banana leaf wrapped banh chung and banh tet- sweet sticky rice logs filled with mung bean or pork. Banh bao makes a regular appearance, filled with pork and quail eggs. And don't forget the sandwiches! Banh mi thit looks like a sub, and contains veggies and cold cuts. Their tea selection is pretty stellar. I've gotten ginseng, artichoke, jasmine, and "ballerina"- the ballerina tea contains senna, so don't drink it unless you're cool with spending a few hours orbiting your toilet. Their mooncake selection was pretty paltry this winter, but they did have a pig-shaped cake, and I'm a sucker for cute food. Chinatown Market has a far superior mooncake selection. If your recipe ever calls for dragonfruit, vietnamese sausage, durian (you better hope not), or daikon, come here. Stockpile noodles and rice while you're at it. read more

This place is pretty small and does sell a good amount of items (frozen foods, rice, candies, rice cookers, preserved foods, noodles, etc) but there isn't much of a selection when it comes to like sweets or canned goods. Good Time Charley's made a piss-poor attempt at these at some point, but they used a grilled chicken breast instead of spiced pork pâté and pork slices (and GTC's pickled vegetables were either too salty or too sweet). Everyone here speaks Vietnamese and almost no English, but if you don't know any Vietnamese, pointing and grunting seem to work well. The bánh mì is on the far end of the store (far left if you're facing the entrance). The bread is shaped different and is softer than what I'm accustomed to, but they got the fillings down. Also, only $0.99 for a package of banh pho (rice noodles)? Those are $1.49 on sale at most Asian markets in A2!!! Yes, it smells like your typical Vietnamese grocery and is crowded (also typical, in my experience). Don't come in expecting anything different. read more

If you're looking for a good banh mi, don't sleep on this place. Come in to their counter and order from a relatively limited menu (traditional, chicken, pork and fish). The bread has great crunch with a nice, pillowy interior. They're generous with the fillings and everything is made fresh as you order it. I've seen people also place bulk orders (think 20+ banh mis) so that can definitely be an option if someone needs to feed a larger number of people. From the grocery store standpoint, they have a small, limited selection of vegetables, meat (frozen and fresh), fish. I'd venture to say their dry goods selection would be the better attraction if you're on the hunt for obscure Asian ingredients or noodles/snacks. Randomly, they also sell a nice assortment of kitchen utensils, pots/pans/bowls/plates - for those moments when you suddenly remember you need to buy, say chopsticks or a strainer. I literally spent almost 2 hours here! (I had 2 misbehaving children in tow though. The aisles are very small, packed, and tight.) I wanted to see and read every single item they had!! In a corner next to the cashier and entry door to the left (store is on right), is this tiny little window (picture telway walk-in style) where they make to order only a few things, but there's always a customer there, that I observed anyways!! I have been wanting to try a bahn mi sandwich for what seems like forever. Fairly new to working in this area, so still on the lookout for good places for lunch. That usually means a sit-down restaurant, but Saigon Market keeps popping up on my radar, when searching for a bahn mi. Well, today was finally the day to give it a try. Needed to get something fairly quickly to have at the office, just before a noon meeting. Ran out the door and got there in record time. The sandwich is now $4, rather than $3.50, but makes little difference. It was great ! ! ! :-D Enjoyed watching the lady make the sandwich and was pleased how far one can get with a smile (hint to the folks who got the wrong impression). Ordered the traditional, as I wanted to know what one should taste like before trying the alternatives. Got a bag of shrimp snacks and a can of Thai coffee to go with it and it made for a very, very filling, albeit rushed, lunch at my desk. The bread is just as one hope a baguette based sandwich would be. The fillings were all just a blend of wonderfulness. Was so nicely pleased that it was such a delicious and filling experience. When in the mood for a bahn mi, or in a hurry for something yummy to enjoy when trapped at my desk for a meeting, this will be an excellent choice. Another ethnic supermarket, but this one focuses more on Southeast Asian products. If you're looking to make pho at home, Thai food, or Indonesian/Malaysian food, you'll find the necessary ingredients to achieve that here. They range from the pre-made mixes to fresh herbs and vegetables, and I believe you can find beef bones as well for stock. We normally come here to buy Indofood mie goreng for my in-laws, and each box is about $21, so probably the cheapest we have found from the markets in Metro Detroit. They also sell a Thai ginger candy for $1.49 each. I haven't tried the banh mi sandwich here yet, but they look like they're doing pretty well. Maybe next time. Overall, you'll find a good selection of fresh herbs, root vegetables, green produce, sauces, spice mixes, and rice noodles here. Just don't expect it to be organized. read more

While the Bahn Mi was not the very best I have ever had, it was very good and it was very cheap. When the lady said $ 3.00 and handed me that nice sandwich I was amazed. I ate it in my car. It was all there and it brought me back to Saigon. The Pork slices, the Pate, the hot pepper slices, the pickled vegetables. The only thing that I wish they did better was the bread. It was kind of a soft spongy bun that did not ring true. The Bahn Mi sandwiches that have blown my mind have been crisp on the outside, and softer on the inside and still hot from the oven. The rest of the store was pretty impressive, I thought. They had just about anything you would want for making south east Asian food and they also had the cookware too. People have said the place is smelly. To me, it smells like what I would expect a Vietnamese market to smell like. I have been in much more odoriferous places than this one. That's for sure. They weren't selling cut up Durian or anything like that. I'd stop in for a Banh Mi anytime. I certainly would go there and spend $ 3.00 on a sandwich before I would spend even more at McDonald's or Burger King. I forgot to see if they sell real Vietnamese fresh coffee. The coffee in Vietnam is outright incredible. I brought back a Kilo of fresh roasted beans the last time I was there and I wish I had brought back 5 times that much. I don't know what it is about the stuff they sell, but it is so damned rich. Yes, they brew it a little differently too and they also have a special kind of coffee called Weasel Coffee that is made from the excreted coffee beans from a kind of weasel after the weasel has consumed the coffee fruit and excreted the beans. After I have a wonderful meal at Thuy Trang a few doors down, I always stop by Saigon Market. Why? The sandwiches! The banh mi here are made fresh right in front of you, and for $2.50, hard to beat. They will toast the bread if you want as well, or you can get four sandwiches like me, have the veggies separate, and eat them later in the week in Toledo. They also have a wide range of asian necessities, and even some harder to find stuff like balut eggs. I bought a half dozen, and they were solid, but a tad on the older side. You can get your herbs here, seasonings, soy milk (gallons and half gallons of RoseWood), dessert goodies, canned fruit. They also have fresh meat/fish counter as well. I love going here for my groceries, and it's nice to converse in Vietnamese. They say a lot of people from Toledo come up on the weekends, and I don't doubt that at all. The banh mi thit noung was definitely fresh and the bread soft. But the disappointing part was the thit nuong, there was basically none! It was more cold cuts meat, pate and a couple thit nuong chunks than a true banh mi thit nuong. Don't get me wrong though, it was good but not what I expected. The other reason for a ding on the rating was my inability to find fresh banh cuon. I asked one of the workers if they had any and she led me over the refrigerator and picked up the last batch of banh cuon. However, she failed to notice the "best by" date had passed by 3 days. When I pointed it out, she said that's all they had and put it back into the fridge for the next unassuming customer. I had to resort to frozen banh cuon but I guess it's better than expired noodles. On the positive side, Saigon Market squeezes a lot of products into a small space. There is plenty of fish swimming in tanks and produce that you can't find at your local Meijer. They had more than enough noodle options than I expected. Saigon Market quenched my thirst for Vietnamese food but failed to live up to my expectations. Next time, I'll try the other Vietnamese market before venturing back here. read more
