The ARTery (puns can be fun) may make most of its money from custom framing, but it is the art supplies that got my attention. If you're a painter in pretty much any of the main mediums, you'll find a rich selection of tubes and cans in a rainbow of colours here. There are stretched canvas' and even some wood panels, you have to special order those from Michael's. Run for the last 15 years by mother/daughter team of Bobbi and Zoe, The ARTery sits on a corner in an old style storefront in the vintage downtown area. Within its lath and plaster walls rest a large collection of coloured papers and drawing pads as well as lots of other art supplies and art-related knick-knacks. During my most recent visit, Zoe was giving a demonstration to one of her customers on how to use some liquid inks in alcohol. The mother/daughter team are happy to show you the technique necessary and even let you get your hands wet if need be. We are all artists and it's small art stores like The ARTery that bring it down to a local level, where it all starts. Take a short walk past the Carlton Hotel and browse the handmade card selection or maybe have a sit-down in the book section and flip thru The Big Book of Art. The main difference being I think this tape is stickier and could cause slight damage to my antique papers. But I couldn't find anything better locally so at least it's acid free... Ojai Creates is a small shop with an average or light selection of art supplies. That said, they do carry things other people don't, and that's what I came here for. The woman behind the counter was polite and friendly and helped me find their options for tape. Parking on site and the shop was clean and well lit. When I found out earlier this year that the original location was closing due to the new building owners I was so bummed, and so were many others in the Ojai community. When soccer season rolls around, AYSO enrolls about 1200 kids in the area. Not all of them shop at Big 5 for cleats, shin guards, and balls but enough do that they go through a lot of volume. That being said, they always have a good selection and the same thing applies to baseball and other sports seasons, too. I'll echo what others have said in that the customer service is fantastic. The people are great and I'm always greeted with a friendly smile when I walk in the store. It's a great place and my kids love browsing the place. It's nice to have stores like this in town.

Big 5 in Lompoc falsely advertises pricing. When attempting to purchase a product with a big yellow…read more& black sales tag from a product retrieved by a BIG 5 employee by ladder, the product rang up at full price and BIG 5 refused to honor the sales price as marked. I filed a formal complaint with the corporate office for false advertising. For a store in a small town, dependent on local spending, it's unwise to engage in this behavior. Not honoring prices due to a store mistake, loses customers. I won't spend another dime at BIG 5 in Lompoc and wouldn't be surprised to see this store close and jobs lost since they rather false advertise. I'll buy sporting goods from Dicks or Amazon, anywhere but BIG 5 in Lompoc.
