The tour covers the history of the people who owned the house, the war and making the city a major port for goods, and how it was used by General Grant. There is a great map of the battlefield and some highly realistic and creepy mannequins to better illustrate the site. It's free, no gift shop, but an enthusiastic and informative tour guide. The house was built in 1790 and is one of the oldest brick dwellings in the city. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1962. There is metered street parking and commercial parking lots within a reasonable walking distance from teh house. The house and yard appeared to be poorly maintained and in need of some severe TLC. The yard has an Urban Garden Space and its landscaping was severely neglected. You will find some benches in the back yard, on a gravel area, that you can sit. You can do a self guided tour of the yard, using QR codes and informational placards. They also offer guided tours of the yard and home. The tour of the interior lasts about 45 minutes. The home is currently undergoing renovation, but is still open. The home is full of Marshall's furnishings and possessions. During the tour, visitors are treated to views of a a couple of bedrooms, including the master suite. and office and dining area. Prepare to be under-wowed by the furnishings. They barely put a small dent in the large rooms. They regularly host events here including the Black Rebellion in Early America Virtual Program, the Spirit of '76 Family Celebration, and the Polly's Richmond Focus Tour with Shockoe Hill Cemetery. This is not my most favorite landmark that I visited by far. There is not a lot to it. It is, however, still worth visiting if you are into history.

There may be a family that benefits from housekeeping that swings a door into your feet at 9am, because they are hanging off of a creaky bed, but it certainly wasn't mine. Never mind the pretentiousness of a pretend cigar lounge, meaning not one to smoke in but just an aesthetic throwback to a time when people actually enjoyed themselves at this location. Not that one would want a cigar after eating chocolate pudding that tastes like it was infused with Trix cereal or any of the other dishes who sacrifice taste for novelty. I would have at least been frightened by the Colonial Williamsburg ghost tour, but after staying at this location, I realized that even the spirits probably wouldn't stick around.

First of all, there was an instruction card that came with the reservation however while it did indicate that there is a backdoor, it did not inform that this was the 'main' entrance. There is very limited parking and if you want to park across at the church on or the street, you are at risk of towing. They have no passes for parking in these locations. The beds are their own issue. If you are vertically challenged, you will have great difficulty getting into the main beds. We stayed in a 'suite' (I use this term laughingly as it was just two connecting rooms) that had another room with twin beds. While the main bed seemed to have a mattress from the last century, the twin beds were ancient. The "pillows" that they give you are quite literally flatter than a pancake they would serve you for breakfast. The suite we stayed in was in the front of the house and there is no insulation to cancel ANY of the traffic noises from outside. It was very very stuffy inside and I wasn't able to open a window. We asked for a step stool and were given one that wasn't even as high as a normal step on a staircase. It was still very difficult to get in to the bed. At no time while I was there did I see, hear or meet the host/hostess of the B&B. The only time we met any employee was in the morning during breakfast. These ladies were AMAZING. They almost made up for the lack of any other service or greeting in their friendliness. The breakfast was late the day I was there. There are signs everywhere stating that it would be served at 8:30 but it was closer to 9:30. I'm an early riser so this was a bit of an inconvenience. At least the coffee was available. They had eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt, toast, cereal etc. It was set up as a buffet style in a very stylish area of the serving area. The dining room table is gorgeous but there are no placemats to put your plates on, I felt very worried about scratching this gorgeous table. The non guest rooms were fit with comfy areas to just relax and chill after a day of being a tourist. The furniture may not have been the most comfortable, but given how cozy each area was this was easily forgiven. I really enjoyed that each room had a Christmas tree already set up. This is not very handicapped friendly as no matter which way you enter, there are very old steps. The front steps were especially bad. To sum up; Parking; F Comfort; B Room Comfort: C+ Breakfast: A Location: A- Price: C (for our experience it was really really pricey)

Because the RV Wireless (yeah oxymoron.. Its pretty much non existant), we asked a staff member (younger lady... About 35) to move. The newer part of the park is pretty wide open and has larger sites. I was told they are awefully full and the only way i could move was to upgrade to a 'Premium' site with a chimney and patio table. I wanted to move so she put the sale through and emailed the receipt. When i got back and moved, I looked at my email and about had a heart attack! For two nights just the difference was $136. Thats the difference! I pulled up my email receipt and looked and she had charged us for THREE nights of upgrade when we only had two nights left. I went back up and the younger gal would not listen or try to explain other than to argue that she HAD not dont that. (even though the receipt showed all three days difference including the one night already spent on the lower cost site). I finally left and we went about our sight seeing in the area that day hoping the other lady (Eileen) would be back in the office. I DID go back about 4PM and Eileen was there and as well as the younger gal. When i said i wanted to talk with Eileen the younger gal almost come OVER the counter with loud arguement that she did NOTHING wrong and didnt charge me fot three nights. I finally told her to 'take a walk' because I was NOT dealing with her. Eileen looked at it and said 'Yes not only did she charge you for all three nights but she didnt give you the Good Sam discount which was clearly marked on our reservation. Bottom line, Eileen refunded nearly $80 but needed me to come back by and give her the CC. When i went in, the younger gal (wish id gotten her name) didnt say 'hi', 'boo', or aologize for her attitude. As I said earlier... Nice park. They seriously need a change in staff though. We (i) have Rv'd for over 35 years and this is the worst situation with park personnel I have ever encountered. BTW Thanks Eileen for listening and correcting oiur fees. Oh and remember I was told I had to upgrade? We stayed the two extra nights in that 'Premium' site with multiple NON Premium sites in our same area available. Makes you wonder if there was some side cash going into someones pocket. We camped at American Heritage RV Park in a Motorhome.
