I've been coming here since 2015. I've been a loyal customer for years since my college days. But lately it's been tasting different. After reading the reviews, I now see that the ownership has changed. Makes sense for the change in atmosphere and quality. The samosas used to be packed with stuffing and flavorful. Now the samosas I got recently are cold and smaller. The crust also seems to be different? It was almost burnt tasting. The icing on the cake (and the reason for my review) is the metal I found in my rice. I thought it was a spice at first but I'm glad I checked it before I ate it. Looks like part of the metal scrubber used to clean dishes. When I called them to let them know, the lady who answered didn't even try to make it right or offer a refund or replacement. She was nice and apologized but my meal was kind of ruined by the piece of metal so it would've been nice to at least gotten the option to replace it. Not sure if I will be coming back. Sad to see the old owners go. The old lady was always so friendly and welcoming. read more

Checking out this landing pad of markets and restaurants. Surprised we haven't seen this place before. Right off the 215 fwy on Blaine st just before Iowa. Right behind yafa cuisine. Parking area in front of the market. The market is full of ingredients to make some delicious meals at home. Lots of items you can't find in regular grocery markets. Located in the back of the market is their prepared foods. Craving samosas we were happy to find some coming out fresh from the kitchen. Definitely ask for fresh ones the wait will be worth it. I ordered samosas today. Absolutely disgusting because there is no salt, no spices and it's not even a samosa. It's just some puff pastry wrapped with bland potato paste.And I also want to mention the cashier guy is not sincere at all because he charged directly 3 percent credit surcharge by not even mentioning about it. How will we know? We paid bill with taxes just like any regular food place with the card but not informing to us that this guy will charge additional too right. If this guy was at least sincere letting us know I could have paid by cash and why do I want to pay extra 3 percent credit card surcharge from my pocket again? I've been a LOYAL customer of New India Sweets and Spices for quite some time and have always enjoyed their HEALTHY meal options. The food is consistently FRESH, HOT, and REASONABLY priced. The staff, who seem to be the owners, are always FRIENDLY and WELCOMING, and it's been a GREAT place to dine. Unfortunately, during my recent visits, I've encountered an issue with a NEWER staff member who seems to work in the back. From the moment he saw me, his attitude was noticeably UNWELCOMING and DISRESPECTFUL. On MULTIPLE occasions, he INSISTED that I pay for my meal BEFORE eating, which is NOT the custom of this establishment. Even after OFFERING to pay in advance, the other staff members had to INTERVENE to remind him of their usual practices, but his attitude remained AGGRESSIVE and UNCALLED FOR. This behavior ONLY seems to be directed toward ME, as I haven't noticed him treating other customers this way. One time, my food was LEFT on the counter instead of being brought to my table, something that had NEVER happened before. When I asked about it, the staff had to SEARCH for my meal, which had been placed in an UNUSUAL location by this same person. His PERSISTENT hostility and REFUSAL to communicate properly have unfortunately made me feel UNCOMFORTABLE and UNWELCOME, despite my previous positive experiences. I'm DISAPPOINTED to say that this individual's behavior has led me to RECONSIDER dining here in the future. I truly hope this isn't an issue others face, but I have noticed a TROUBLING PATTERN when it comes to how people of RICHER skin tones may be treated. read more

We drive from chino hills just to come here! Haven't been since they locked everything down 3 years ago but you better believe I'm headed there now!! They have by far the best food!! I've been a semi-regular now for nye on ten years (probably more years off than on) but this Indian Market feels like the real deal. There's so much stuff I tend to browse the aisles checking out everything before I remember what I came for. Spices: Ever wonder what some of the stuff in Indian cookbooks actually looks like? I can assure you from experience that lacking even one ingredient leads to disappointing results (what the hell is missing)? Try... fenugreek, or maybe it's the black mustard seed or something you can't get anywhere else? The good news is that they stock every kind of lentil, rice and spice you can possibly need. Prices are reasonable and I occasionally buy a duplicate so keep a list of what you need for certain recipies prior to leaving home. Hungry? They have a steam table with a few Indian classics plus lots of sweet treats (my neighbors bring those by and they're delicious) that resemble donuts and swizzle sticks or marbles. The tastes are exotic (cardamom and cinnamon) but it's worth trying at least once. Nicknacks: Tucked away in the darker corner of the store are useful serving implements (cheap metal spoons and strainers) and serving dishes. They have several sizes of ingredient dishes to stage your pre-measured spices! Verdict: One of several Indian markets in town, New India Sweets is my favorite. read more

Plenty of Vegan options,all you gotta do is ask whomever is behind the counter ,everyone is nice and very helpful in telling you what's in the food.Me and my daughter (2yrs old) both us vegan went in and came out with Combo #1 Rice ,potatoes and peppers and lentils which is $5.49 we also got a samosa for $1 dollar, I regret not buy more lol we also got some naan bread which was made vegan too as we asked ,for only $1.50.Everything was soo good I loved it my daughter loved it and we had enough food left for another meal for mom went she gets home. Family owned small shop with outstanding variety to please our palate and tickle our taste buds. It is a South Asian/ Indian grocery store with a few tables to relish a variety of regional culinary delights. North Indian as well as south Indian dishes along with a variety of sweets (desserts) and savory snacks. All dishes are delicately seasoned and flavors are perfectly balanced with a variety of herbs and spices. Many items are cooked as per our order and seasoned just right. The owners and staff are very friendly, welcoming and flexible. The masala chai is made to order and always delicious. Unlike many Indian restaurants, the food is not oily, overly spiced, or pungent. Karela (bitter gourd), Pakoda kudhi, masala dosa (crepe,) and samosas were outstanding as are the other dishes we brought home. They make their yogurt on the premises. Consistent customer service coupled with authentic home style cooking at a very reasonable price makes this our favorite place to visit. I got all the spices I needed here. I cook a lot of Indian food, so I am very fortunate to have a spice shop so close to campus. I couldn't find stuff like whole cardamom pods, kashmiri powder, or hing at other local grocery stores and even if I did, the quality of the spices isn't as good and fresh as the ones here. It's assuring to see a lot of the spices are sealed in vacuum bags such as the star anise. Although the spices are pricey, it's the price you pay for quality and it reflects in the dishes. read more

I want to say this is the best kept secret for Vegetarian Indian food in Riverside, I visit this gem located right behind Bakers off of Blaine and Iowa, about 3-4 times a week. New India Sweets and Spice is an Indian Market, with a kitchen inside. Think of like a Chinese Take-Out restaurant. I typically get a one item meal, which include a veg buffet item, rice or rotti, and chutney. I'll grab a soda (coke of course) and my meal is generally around $5.00, give or take. There are 2 and 3 item options as well. You can eat there, or take it to go. Its really fast. Different items every day. If you get the Masla Dosa you will not be disappointed. it is a bit spicy, but SO good!! Your food is typically out in 3-5 minutes and walking around the market is fun while you wait. The owners are a older man and woman, and they are great. There's always a Hindi movie playing on the TV, and the sweets selection is mind blowing- ludoo's are my thing after I eat. This place is great for UCR students, or lunch on the go. I stop in after work to grab dinner sometimes. And the best part, a cup of chai is free with your meal, or while you wait. The people running this place should be ashamed i went in and bought a large order of some pastries when i got home i noticed the product had a very funky smell i went back they smelled it and told me the smell is coming from the box that the desert is in and not the actual food product. I unwillingly took it and left the store. The smell coming from this pastry is almost like oil or old rubber it does not seem like something anyone should consume. Im pretty sure the product is really old causing this funky smell. The pastry is made in store at so no expiration date/sell by date was provided. read more

OMG I am SO happy I found this place. When you enter this store you DEFINITELY feel like you've traveled to another part of the world. I LOVe it! Theres also a small restaurant inside the market towards the back. This market is so filled with every spice you can think of from the Indian cuisine. I even bought some HAIR PERFUME! I never knew they made that! The staff is very friendly and attentive. The ONLY down side to this experience is that I purchased some garlic from the produce section and ALL OF IT WAS ROTTEN! I went inside and saw that they had Indian food which I love since I am Indian. So I was greeted by Gurjit Kaur who was very nice and welcoming and orders the Masala DOSA. Wow Wow Wow Wow! Excellent steam table food, esp Punjabi vegetables (baingan bharta, shalgam ki sabzi) which tasted like what you'd get in actual Punjabi homes, and good fresh samosas with the right level of crispness ("khasta"). However. Not a single person in there, whether cooking or managing or anyone, was wearing a mask. I would not go back in the pandemic. It's nice to see that I'm the ONLY non-Indian here at times... You will see the owner and some of the customers here w/ turbans. I like that because it tells me that this place is the real deal. I've visited this Indian grocery/market at least several times, which is well stocked w/ nearly every product from India imaginable. They sell vegetarian fast food (both under heat lamps and cook to order)... The spices are spicy hot and some of the flavors have an acquired taste. I've tried MANY Indian restaurants in my life time but I have to say that this is definitely different... In other words, It almost felt as if I was trying Indian food for the very first time again! Not your average Indian fare here!! I think they cook as if they never left India (as in real homemade cooking). I got a Thali special (all vegetarian) for only $3.49. I had a veggie yellow curry which was surprisingly very hot & spicy, some strong aromatic white rice, and a small salad w/ a chili/dressing on the side (this is new to me). I also had a garbanzo soup which was good. My Caucasian-looking father who went with me on one occasion also ordered the veggie yellow curry and he started to get a little red in the face from eating it - I told him he better order something else because I did not want his blood pressure to go up on him due to the spicy hot flavor! I went ahead and ordered a dosa masala ($3.99) to split with my dad because he was not able to finish the veggie yellow curry from how spicy-hot it was. The dosa masala is a looooooooong burrito-like crepe that is stuffed inside w/ a mildly spiced potato/veggie mix - interesting stuff! I went ahead and ordered another to take home to give to my spouse. BTW, I'm not a huge fan of vegetarian-only, but vegetarian Indian food will do because it is usually very flavorful for being meatless. For once, my colon will thank me for taking a break from all the heavy meats I consume during the week. Yes, I grew up in a household in which my parents would eat meat on a daily basis, esp when it came to red meat. I recommend the following: Dosa masala ~ eat it while you are still there because it will be crispy when served hot. By the time I brought the one home to my spouse - it was already a soggy mess! The crepe-like exterior was no longer crispy! Needless to say, my hubby only ate the potato mix inside. Thali special ~ this is good if you are feeling adventurous and would like to give your colon a break! And your wallet a break at the same time! Garbanzo soup - nicely spiced and something I would eat again. Now some of the food here is under heat lamps (the thali stuff), but the dosa masala was made fresh for me. Actually the dosa masala takes a while for them to make. I do NOT recommend this place as your FIRST experience with Indian food if you're hesitant. Try more Americanized watered-down Indian restaurants like Bombay Cuisine of India in Ontario (my dad was fine with that one). Don't forget dessert! Either this place relocated within the last 5 years or my previous review is for the Indian grocery/deli on the other side of Blaine. My boyfriend and I live nearby and decided to check this place out. I ordered the $5.49 special with 2 items, rice, a salad, roti, a yogurt lentil dish, and a dessert. It was a ton of food (see photo), I was able to get 2 meals out of it. We pretty much tried every side they offered except for the chickpea one (which we'll try sometime soon). Out of all of them, my absolute favorite was the eggplant curry. Almost all of the sides were very spicy, but delicious. The peas and potato curry were the least spicy of all of them. If you like spicy food and want to try something new, give this place a try. It's VERY affordable and delicious. The one thing that would really benefit this location is labeling the vegetable sides in the deli area. Someone who isn't familiar with all Indian cuisine likely has a hard time figuring out what the sides are. read more

I'd have to say that this place is definitely worth my money. My roommate introduced me to this place and I've been getting cravings for it ever since. The food: I ordered the 1 item thali special (1 vege + rice + salad) and a samosa. My vegetable in this case was "chana" (some sort of garbanzo bean mixture). The overall total was a little under $5! The channa tasted pretty good and the samosa had the right amount of spiciness to it. I would definitely come back again because I got a lot of food for a little under $5. read more

Best Indian food this side of the Pacific. I dropped by here one day to buy some turmeric and was surprised to find a food counter in the back. I was in India back in the 80's and this place made me feel like I was standing on the streets of Old Delhi, minus the trash on the streets... This is the MOST authentic true vegetarian Punjabi food my son and I have ever had in the US. The food is very reasonable and you get a lot for the price. Be advised, it's spicy! This place was my go to cheap lunch spot for years in Riverside. The thali special (now I think it's called the combo #2) is an incredible value, with 2 types of vegetarian dishes, rice, garlic naan, yogurt lentil soup. They also make nice big samosas (the samosa channa is delicious!), and veggie pakora. If you're looking for ingredients to cook Indian dishes, the shelves are always stocked and there are fresh veggies available for purchase. For the longest time this place felt like a hidden gem in Riverside, but lately it's been getting busier and with that the prices have gone up slightly. Still a better value than most places in the area, especially if you're looking for vegetarian food. If you're looking for a cheap filling lunch spot, be sure to check this place out! read more
