Neither is an enviable place to be. However, given my 'druthers (though I wasn't), at least I'm only here because I got a summons for jury duty. It's my civil obligation, I know. I respect that. But at my age, after having been summoned to jury duty on three other occasions over the years, I thought I'd fulfilled my civic duty. I guess I was mistaken....

Attended a trial here as a fact witness. I have seen many types of courthouses before under…read moresimilar circumstances. The Richard C Lee US Courthouse has an imposing and stately look to it from the outside. To enter this building you have to go through a security checkpoint. And except for attorneys, they do not allow cell phones or cameras within the building, so no photos for this review. After I was cleared through security, artificial hip and all, I was shown to a small room that was reserved for use by the defense team that I was working with. I waited there to be called to testify in the courtroom nearby where the case was being heard. This windowless room had a conference table and eight to ten chairs. With the door closed it was warm and stuffy and no thermostat in sight. Once I was called into the courtroom it was almost like going from the Sahara to Iceland! But I much preferred the icebox since I was wearing a suit and tie. Like many other courthouses I have been in, this one is massive and impressive. There are the common wooden benches for seating and tables and chairs set for plaintiff and defense teams to present their cases. There is of course the jury box (some of you may have had experience with this if you have been called for jury duty) and witness stand where I did my part, and the "bench" or desk where the judge sits and a place in front for the court reporter. I almost hate to say it but if you've seen one courthouse, you've seen them all.

In a second, all I saw were red & blue lights right behind me. Not because I was talking, in fact I…read morewas actually using my Bluetooth. But because I was doing 53 on a 30. Pleaded with Ms. Police Officer til I turned green, said I needed to pick up my dog's Rx- before CVS Pharmacy closed. She had no time for sad stories. After that, put ticket in my bag and off I went to the pharmacy. Could've/Should've done a number of things including pay it off and move it along. But I was determined to fight the damn ticket in court. H...o...w...e...v...e...r- few things took a left turn from my part after that: lost my summons, no time to go to court, back-to-back work schedules, delayed my hearing, etcera. But I also didn't want it to affect my driving record or result in a suspended license. In any case, I missed the deadline badly, it cost me and had to take action fast. Front desk officer, directed me to the Traffic Clerk's window and I paid ticket+fees. The clerk was real cordial and didn't feel I was being brushed off- in reality, the sister helped me in every way. In the end, I fessed up and gotta be a bit more light-footed on the gas. Paying that ticket, hurt my pocketbook but listen- I admitted my guilt. And coming here was a breeze.

Parking is available right next door, and not too expensive -then free directly across the street after your are picked. Would be nice if they had more than one parking machine in the courthouse as time may need to extended depending on where you fall in the jury pool. The courts operate on a union schedule, so prompt start at 10:00am, lunch from 12:30 to 2:00 pm, then done promptly at 4:30 each day. Only pick is the truly ho-hum coffee shop in the building, although there is a terrific deli/restaurant around the corner. The civil case was short - only three days, and so I am free for the next 6 years after serving. Wheee!

For those wanting to know what happens the first day.....JURY DUTY…read more Easy to find. Plenty of free parking on property. Entrance to courthouse on side of building by road. You go through security, make a right and signs on door display "Jury Room". I went from parking lot to filling out the 2 forms in the jury room in a matter of 5 minutes. From this point it's hurry up and wait. You may be there a full day 9:30 til 4:00, or a half day 9:30 til noon. If you are there a full day, chances are you will be picked for duty.....and may be there for days. They selected enough potential jurors before they got to me so I was let go at noon. Lucky. Out of about 60 people, there were only 6 left who were let go, me being one of them. The remaining take lunch, come back at 2:00 and proceed til 4. Not sure what their fate will be, but I really don't care.

I have done Jury Duty many,many times at the Criminal Courts but this was my first time here .On arrival it's the usual, go through the metal detector, get your belongings scanned, fill out some forms and go sit and wait. The employees are very friendly and helpful and they explain to everyone what the day will entail and we all watch an orientation film which helps the time go by a little faster . There is a small cafe where you can grab a bite and a coffee , it's clean and the girl at the counter is very friendly . They do have WIFi so that helps , you can use your phone and I-Pad .I also brought along a book , but for me it was a little difficult to concentrate with the TV on and people talking .By 10:00 Two groups of people were called to be interviewed with the lawyers and the rest of us continued to wait . The time seemed to go by quickly and at around 12:30 we were all told they had selected all the jurors they needed and we were all free to go. I was expecting to have to endure a long boring day but it was a nice surprise for everyone . So , all in all I had a much better experience than I've had in the past. Civic duty done!

As line leader of the potential jurors I got to perform the following tasks- 1. Press the down button on elevator 2. Press the number 6 3. avoid mass confusion and lead the group into court #3 4. Request bathroom break 5. count out the water fountain drink limit so we can all have a chance ("1,2,3,4 Switch") 6. First choice of smock in the art room 7. Being the envy of the older Albanian woman who said I looked like her half- brother. The VHS converted to DVD was shown about 1 hour into arrival- It proved to us that we are here for an important reason but also reiterrated that we all have busy (lie) and important (again, a lie) ilves. The white business type folks gathered round the glass windows- some to gain a vantage point over the beautiful city and coast line dotted with projects, abandoned homes, and failed revitalization projects, others to huddle around the weak wireless signal dripping out of the almost nearby Holiday Inn. If you have never been to this city, its not like the other "ports" in CT ie. westport, southport- BPT is a city with a net exodus of people and net inflow of brownfield sites.- I mean, I still like it. The camaradie formed inside jury selection is like no other- The only way to make friends is by what the people have on, what extra items they brought in or what they look like. Its a microcosm of high school- "You have a golf shirt on- you play golf, lets talk or you have a nice cloche, where did you get it? Marshalls? I love the Marshalls on North Ave, No metal detectors! An impromptu game of go fish broke out in the back, but seemed to fold quickly do to conflict of the rules, or they might have been using a pinochle deck. Some advice, when you walk in- sit in the fron right seats closest to the windows- when they call for check in- you will be first. Also- When you get dismissed from a case, dont be upset- Its like being found not guilty.

I was calling the court for information, and it took forever to reach a person. 1st of all, the…read moreclerks are mean and unprofessional. 2nd they treat you like you are some types of criminals. 3rd, I was looking for public information, and the clerk transferred me to a clerk in the prosecutor's office without telling me she was going to transfer me. 4th I'm a United States Air Force Veteran and a Connecticut Army National Guard Veteran. I received Honorable Discharges for both branches and no Criminal Record. I guess, if you don't work in the court system, you must be some type of criminal. If you are acting BIAS and you work in the court system, there has to be something wrong with that.

This is one of the worst run courts. I was here dealing with a motor vehicle issue and, as it turns…read moreout, this court only sees people with motor vehicle violations on certain Fridays. As a result, there were so many people in the courthouse that it ironically felt like we must have been breaking the fire code. I got the second to last parking spot in their free parking garage, waited in a 15 min line just to get through security, waited over an hour to check in, waited over another hour to get into the courtroom, then waited over another hour sitting and waiting to meet with the prosecutor. In retrospect, probably not worth it to try to contest what I felt was an unjust violation, but maybe that's their goal. Part of the delay in the courtroom itself turned out to be their lack of a fair system. The clerks took the big stack of folders after people had waited in line to check in and then split them among the prosecutors. What resulted was you could have been towards the back of the line to check in, but if you were one of the lucky ones at the top of one of the piles, you could have been see much more quickly. There was a woman waiting in line who has a job as a court marshal at a different location, and she was in disbelief at the way they did things here. The court marshal, who should always be present in the courtroom in case something happens, randomly left his post for a good 10 min, leaving the room without any law enforcement. Then another marshal told a guy to remove his hat, and someone pointed out a woman who was also wearing a hat, and the marshal said it was okay for her to wear the hat because the rule "doesn't apply to women." (A strange application of a clear rule, considering the hats-off policy is supposed to show respect to the judge and the courtroom.) When you're given your appointment time to meet with the prosecutor (at least if it's motor vehicle related), keep in mind that it's not a strict time and it's more to stagger the arrivals. I would do my best to reschedule to another day or to come early to avoid the hellish lines. To anyone who wants to fight the power here, I solemnly wish you the best of luck.

But that's not just my personal hubris; it could be said of any legislature anywhere, so back to Connecticut's take on a legislative office building. First of all, it's architecturally distinctive. Within its modern facade is a lovely large interior atrium that seems much larger than it is. A "tunnel" connects the LOB to the Capitol next door, decorated with faces from the state's history. The tunnel is actually a bridge over the highway on ramp between the buildings, which just feels cool. The cafeteria is convenient and decent, and the entire building tended with great attention. Parking is free in a garage behind the LOB: follow the driveway between it and the state armory next door to find its entrance. The staff have only been kind and helpful when I've visited on business. Whatever lawmakers may decide to do or not do, these state employees remain gracious, and I appreciate it.
