New Choice Restaurant - Sweet & Sour Pork
    Mike H.

I was looking for a new choice and stumbled upon New Choice Restaurant. This was a fairly packed Chinese restaurant which is always a good sign. They serve mostly Cantonese fare including classic stir-fry and congee at reasonable prices. We tried the combo set A for 4 along with congee: - New Choice Premium Congee - Signature Steamed Chicken - Sweet & Sour Pork - Stir Fried Fresh Bok Choy w/ Garlic Sauces - Braised Garoupa with Tofu Glad that house congee came with some shrimp, egg yolk, squid & scallop in a medium sized bowl. The set menu also came with decent soup. But the main dishes were a little light on flavour, helped by salt & white pepper. Portion sizes were large & service was relatively attentive. This spot seems to be a staple for some regulars; we probably won't be one of them. But glad to have a new choice.

I use to come here for years and always enjoyed it. I haven't been here in a long time, then decided to come & I was disappointed. It unfortunately has gone downhill, the food quality is not what it used to be.

Fantastic place to go to, especially if you're looking for a casual AUTHENTIC HK style Chinese food for dinner. CASH only at this restaurant, but worth every penny because their quality of food is excellent. Service is good especially now that we know the servers quite well over the years and seating is very casual. This is definitely my go-to spot whenever I'm hungry at night. Huge variety of HK style dishes including seafood, meat, and much more!

We used to come to this restaurant every now and then. Once all the new restaurants started popping up we found other regular restaurants to go to for our meals. Once we sat down I checked in on yelp to see what my fellow yelpers had to say about this restaurant. The reviews varied by a great deal. Mostly I saw a lower number of stars but a couple glowing reviews. The few that I browsed had my attention when they mentioned an automatic service fee of 13%. I don't think I've come across this before except when it's usually parties of 8+ customers, and at Caucasian restaurants. The chicken wings caught our attention on the menu but there was no mention of how many there would be. We found out from the server that it was 3 full wings for $10! That's quite pricey. Guess we'll be ordering something else instead. We got salt & pepper pork chops and fish balls with rice noodles and veggies in soup. Both were good and came to the table surprisingly quick. Time to check the bill and sure enough there was a 13% gratuity already added. It's not so much how much the automatic gratuity is but why it was added. Service and the food was not exceptional compared to other restaurants. Plus, our tablecloth actually had a hole in it. You'd think with all these automatic gratuities they'd have enough money to purchase new tablecloths. We won't be back.

Before I go into why I like this place, I want to say that the staff needs a crash course on how to be a service-oriented establishment. Look, I get it, not everyone there speaks proper English, but their blunt manner of talking that borders on indifference and rudeness is not exactly fit for a restaurant. It's like they're impatient all the time and want to take your order and go on about their business as fast as possible. The supposed 13% gratuity they include on every bill when you eat there is unacceptable. Gratuity, unless it's not HST, is optional and needs to be deserved through great service. A 0% gratuity is perfectly acceptable when the service is not up to par. I would never pay a mandatory gratuity. It's outrageous. Back to the food. I only have experience ordering their black pepper beef and lemme tell you, it's absolutely delicious. Lots of beef, not filler in the form of veggies. Just straight up beef. I like it. And it's REALLY affordable at $11.25 for a takeout container, it's a steal. Cash only, though, so be warned. This place does not take debit or credit. The food I observed other patrons eating looked tasty and appetizing. In short, if you don't care about a lack of proper service you'd expect from a restaurant and mainly care about the food, then you won't be disappointed. The place is open until late, so that's another point of attractions for the locals.

A moment of weakness: as it was close to midnight and almost everything else in the plaza were closed and after eating Double Inferno earlier, I don't think I should be having more spicy food! And I made the wrong decision to come to New Choice Restaurant again. I guess I should have learn from my own experience and read my own review using my Yelp App before walking through the doors... but New Choice is open till 4 am.. it cannot be worse than my lunch special... I was WRONG! The only thing that I enjoyed was the Plain Congee ($1.50) in its purity with no added seasoning or ingredients... I was just so glad we ordered that and we even order another bowl! I have to declare I have the worst Taiwanese Three-Cup Chicken ($9.95) in my life, where's the 3 cup - each of soy sauce, rice wine, and sesame oil and where's the ginger and basil? Why are the chicken so heavily battered deep fried and gluey? After one bite, I just couldn't eat that and I thought I ordered the wrong dish! You sure that's chicken?! I confirmed with the kitchen again and he said it is the 3-Cup Chicken!! Taiwanese Style Stir Fried ($5.95) was as bad. The tofu was deep fried to crispy dryness. At least I enjoyed the peanuts as it went well with my congee. After the renovation, the interior does feel cleaner. Note to self, I am not coming back here again!!!!!!!!

Worst Chinese food I had recently and expensive for two people!
    Mark M.

Worst Chinese food I had ! The soft shell crab costs $19.8 with very little crab but mostly deep fried batter, terrible taste! The Tung Choi with Bean curd sauce was not stir fried but boiled. Tasted mushy and very little taste. Costs $11.95 and we took one mouthful and left the rest untouched. When I asked the Waitress, Kitty, why the vegetable was boiled instead stir fried, she said they always boiled the vegetables first and then just put the cooked vegetables in the wok for a few seconds to create the illusion that you are getting the traditional Chinese Stirred Fried food! To add insult to injury, she added 13.6% service charge to my bill without telling me. When I confronted her, she said this is their policy now. But nowhere on the menu stated this automatic service charge! Food: 1/10. Service: 1/10. Attitude: -10. I will never go back to this restaurant again!

Went to this place on a friday night. It was relatively busy, which is always a good sign. This is an old school cantonese style restaurant. went to this restaurant with a friend. We ordered 3 dishes, the Beef with mushroom, hot pot garoupa with tofu, and braised pork belly with lotus root. Honestly of the three dishes the hot pot and the beef with mushroom were the best, and the last one was not bad. however it did not stand out as much as the other two. This restaurant is pretty authentic when it comes to the food, and the portions are average, it is decent enough. It is of course this type of restaurant you usually bring with family and friends, in an area where there is a abundant of chinese restaurant, this one still stands out as pretty good and old school. i would definitely recommend it to people who have a craving for good cantonese cuisine. The Lobster which i had last time is also a dish i would recommend highly as they are very good with seafood.

The place has a musty kind of smell to it and the place feels like it needs a bit modernization. The food here is ok and the main attraction of this place is the hours. They open really late. No credit, debt card accepted. Alot of the older folks come here. Thousand island pork chop is the best (not in the menu). Alot of restaurant owners come here too because of the late hours

New choice is my go to place for Chinese food and ever since they renovated I have been going more and more. We came here on the grand reopening night and it was packed! The interior is modern, clean and less cramped than before. The menus have been updated with photos AND English (for those who can't read Chinese like me). In terms of food, my favorite dishes include: -baked lobster with creamy cheese -baked ribs in thousand island sauce -deep fried chicken wings with chilli salt -shredded salt braised chicken -braised duck with taro in plum sauce The list can go on with so many items on their menu. In addition, their HK style milk tea is one of my favorites. I highly recommend this place for dinner and its open late (4am) if you're craving a midnight snack. Remember CASH ONLY!

The macaroni soup was just okay, very much the kind of simple comfort food that fills you up, but nothing especially memorable. I was most excited for the signature beef sandwich, but it didn't fully meet my expectations. The burger/sandwich itself was smaller than I imagined, and it only had about 2-3 pieces of beef brisket inside with marinated bell peppers and their homemade sauce. The sauce leaned sweeter than expected, which might work for some people, but personally I was hoping for something more savoury and more generous with the beef. However, the brisket was tender, which was a win... ish. Overall, still a decent spot if you're craving classic HK cafe vibes and variety, especially for a casual meal with family.
