Adobo Oysters
Victoria S.

I really, really enjoyed the food here. Reservations are released at 10am on Wednesdays for the following week and are highly encouraged. I snagged a spot for Wednesday at 5:15pm for the bar. If you cancel your reservation late, you will be charged $30 per person (you can reserve up to max 4 in your party). Although I had made a reservation for 2 people, due to circumstances out of our control, my cousin couldn't make it in time so I ended up going to dinner by myself. I arrived promptly af 5:15 and explained the situation to them and they were very kind and assured me that everything would be okay. They sat me at the bar, where I was immediately greeted by the bartender and given a menu to review. The food menu is small but mighty! There is a variety of food options, and the dishes are explained thoroughly to you before you order. I wanted to try everything! But, ultimately decided on the following: Oysters ($16) - these were served as a pair and came with a raw quail egg and small string of sea grapes on each half shell. The oysters tasted fresh, the yolk from the quail egg tempered down the saltiness and gave it more body, and the sea grapes brought a light salty crunch back at the end. Tuna Kinilaw ($29) - 8 thick pieces of raw tuna that were served carpaccio style; the flavor reminded us of Bò Tái Chanh! Spring Onion and Zucchini Noodles ($38) - a heaping mound of egg noodles served with julienned carrots, green onions, and zucchini powder (I think). It also included a cooked egg on top that was cut into two. Duck Adobo ($45) - Pan seared duck breast cooked medium rare, served over a sticky omelet (it reminded me of boiled rice and potatoes that got blended into a glutinous, sticky consistency), and brown sauce with a side of pickled garlic. This dish came with white rice. For drinks, I got the Adobo Martini ($14), Pandan Daqiuri ($14), and Burnt Rice Martinez ($15). All three cocktails were unique and tasted wonderful! I finished off the night with the infamous cheese ice cream. It was a lactose intolerant person's worst nightmare (but I regret nothing!!!!). Grated cheddar cheese atop a scoop of vanilla/cheese ice cream. The concept may sound off putting, but the salty/savory/sweet blend of the ice cream and cheese was delicious! I couldn't stop smiling the whole time I was there. The open kitchen concept reminded me of when I used to help my parents out at their restaurant, the food felt like home because it was Asian comfort food, and everyone was so friendly! I was able to box up my leftovers and share with my cousin when she finally got in. Overall, an amazing dinner. I would stop here again if I ever come back to Asheville!

June Fruit

Restaurant is fine, but it's extremely overpriced for what it is. June Fruit ($15): Tasted decent, and I enjoyed the unique take on blending spicy sauce with fruit. However, this is a lot to pay for a few slices of fruit. The fruit itself was pretty average to begin with. Peppered Sweetbread ($28): This was probably my favorite dish. The chili pepper sauce was divine! Perfectly crunchy and full of umami. The sweetbread itself was okay; it was really just serving as the vessel to carry the sauce. Duck Adobo ($45): Probably the most overpriced dish. Duck was decent, but not amazing. Potatoes and garlic were also decent. Sauce was flavorful, but lacked complexity. I feel like we paid seafood/beef prices for poultry. We're glad we didn't order more, because it was already $100+ for just those 3 dishes. The restaurant is quite small, with under 20 seats. This did mean that the waitstaff are very attentive and responsive.

Pork Bellychon, Monk fish with curry sauce, and I always absolutely love the oysters here!

Had an early Velntine's day dinner here with my girl. This was my third time eating here and I'm leaning towards this is my favorite restaurant of all time. You can't go wrong here with any of the food. And we loooovvee the dining room!! Awesome job for everyone working that night. Thank you so much. Editing this review for an addendum - people who leave lowly reviews for this place because they think it's over priced is laughable. You can't eat at McDonald's for less than $15 these days. And the portions here are fair. You will have plenty of food. We couldn't finish all of ours we were so full

Love the artwork!

Wow! This place was really a surprise. The ambience was simply amazing. You enter through this little door in the back alley - so unassuming that you might do a double take to make sure you're at the right place. You walk in and there's a host stand. Ok looks fine. And then they bring you up the stairs and into this quaint dining room with vibrant colors, dim lighting, and an overall cheerful feeling. You feel like you've been transported to another place and time. I loved how the kitchen was framed like a stage and there were some spotlights on the chefs like we were witnessing the performance of what cooking really is - also loved the queer artwork on the walls. Now, amazingly, the food was just as good! We went during the July 4th week so they had some bbq specials - so there was a strong presence of fusion between Filipino and Southern/Appalachian cuisine. Usually, fusion restaurants can fall short - not excelling in either cuisine, but here they excelled in both. We had the BBQ plate which had longanisa sausage and carolina pulled pork. Both were very good. The sinigang wings were delicious and so unique. I loved that they made their own housemade ranch. The filipino spaghetti, while usually sweet, was smoky here for the Bbq theme. And the sides - lima and green beans were seasoned well - and my oh my was the potato salad great - I want to steal this recipe. I would come back for the potato salad alone. We finished the meal with the queso ice cream which was good and very unique. Service was excellent! This was our best and most memorable meal in Asheville. If you have time to only go to one place for dinner, let this be it.

2nd visit to Neng Jrs, this time for my birthday. I was sure they could not live up to the standard they set the first time, but as is often true, I was wrong. Started with the Pandan Daiquiri, which was lovely, and balanced, but paled in comparison the the transcendent "sour sazarac". Perhaps it is my imagination, but the duck fat created a pillow for the bourbon and absinthe to gently poke my palate and was absolute bliss. Followed by two rounds of the oysters. Better than before and yet basically the same. I don't need to bore you with the gustatory delight presented by every course, because we ordered everything save the duck and Laing with bitter melon. The only way I can adequately express how lovely and talented this restaurant is would be to describe my reaction to the one dish I didn't care for. I ordered the "off menu" charcoal roasted whole mackerel. Now I know going in that mackerel is an oily fish, that it is relatively earthy, and that its skin is much less delicate than other similarly sized fish. But I thought maybe I'd just be never had it done right! So I ordered it. I didn't care for my first bite. So I found a different bit and added a bit more of the acid/fat buffered pico esque tomato topping. And I still didn't like it. And when I left a $50 dish mostly uneaten, I felt no remorse, no sadness, no anger. I said to my family as we left; I don't know if they swung for the fences on the mackerel and missed or if my palate just didn't agree with theirs but I'm inclined to think it's me. When you can leave a meal spending that much on part you didn't like and feel good about it, you know how miraculous the rest of the meal was. Don't miss this place. In a city full of "amazing restaurants" with a "vibrant culinary scene", this place is genuinely special. It deserves the slobbering praise that has been heaped upon it. And to eat there is a gift Silver and Cherry and their team labor gleefully to make real. Thank you so very sincerely for what you do.

Do you ever have a meal you dream about often? Neng Jrs was that for me. From the ambiance which is a cozy 17 seat bar and restaurant to the amazingly kind staff who knew everything about the menu and was willing to answer any and all questions - everything was perfect. Their menu is small but packs a punch and will leave you wanting to order one of everything. We started out with the adobo oysters which were briney, salty and had tons of ocean flavor. The star of the show was the duck adobo for me. If I could have one dish for the rest of my life, this would be it. It's creamy, has tons of garlic, and fat and left me wanting to lick the plate. Make reservations in advance and please try all the things ga

We finally had the chance to dine at Neng Jr's., and it was absolutely worth the wait. Although Filipino cuisine hasn't always been my go-to, it definitely should have been. The food here is nothing short of extraordinary--thoughtfully crafted, inventive, and refreshingly unpretentious. We began with the Adobe Oysters, and though I usually prefer my oysters natural, the combination of raw quail egg, sea grapes, and shallots created a perfect balance of flavors. Next came the Pork Lumpia, fried to perfection and incredibly tasty. The pink Heirloom Tomato, served in clarified butter and olive oil, was simply outstanding. For the main courses, which are generous enough to share among 2-4 people, we started with the Striped Bass Sinigang. The broth and salsa were phenomenal, especially when mixed with the accompanying rice. But the highlight of the meal was, without a doubt, the Whole Hog Noodles. Smoky, rich, and utterly addictive, this dish is beyond description. It will go down as one of the best things I've ever eaten. If you do one thing in life, make sure it's trying this dish. The service is great and attentive. Can't wait to go back.

I love Filipino food, so when a friend recommended this spot, I had to try it the next time we were in Asheville. My husband and I shared: - Adobo Oyster - Chicory Ensalada - Sweetbreads with Smoked Tomato - Duck Adobo - Pork Belly Pulled Noodles - Queso lce Cream Everything we had was very good. The stars of the show for me were the duck and pork belly. I wanted to drink the sauce with the duck because it was so good. The oyster was my favorite of the small plates we got. While I enjoyed everything, I will say that for the price we paid, I expected to be blown away by every dish and that wasn't the case. Make sure to make reservations in advance because it's a very small place.

Picture this: it's a Tuesday, you're swiping through Bumble BFFâ„¢ desperately seeking a connection. When all of a sudden, ding! A match! My palms were sweaty, knees weak, arms were heavy - and I opened the message. "Hey girl! I have a reservation for neng Jr's tonight but my boyfriend just left me for the landlord so do you want to go?" Say less! Wow, this little spot tucked down a dark alley was extremely surprising. I did no research beforehand so the entire experience was unexpected. The ambiance is very romantic, low lit with close seating. There's a bar area in front of the open kitchen. The server was very kind and attentive. I tried the garlic vodka cocktail, I don't remember the name of it but I was so sure I wouldn't like it. I loved it! I was also very impressed with the accommodations for vegan folk like myself, and we ordered several dishes to try. I really liked the creamy soupy dish that normally has fish but was modified to be vegan. There wasn't a long wait for everything. I have since tried to go back but they're booked a month or so in advance. There is a waitlist you can join if you'd like to gamble! 10/10 experience, service & food!

I had to wait 6 months before trying Neng Jr's but don't wait as long as I did! Go try it now! The menu changes frequently but there appears to be two menu items which stay around: Adobo Oyster and Duck Adobo. I think both are required ordering. The oyster is the best I've ever had. And I wanted to buy a gallon of the duck adobo sauce and take it home with me. I nearly licked my plate clean. Other items that I loved and would order again include the Sweetbreads With Smoked Tomato, Pork Belly Pulled Noodles, and Queso Ice Cream. I cleaned all of the smoked tomato sauce off of my plate. It was phenomenal. The pork belly was cooked perfectly, with an exceptionally crispy outside but a tender and fatty undercarriage. And the queso ice cream was delicious, combining two of my favorite things.

What a treat it is to get into this small restaurant. The care and time the staff put into each patron shows. The menu changes constantly and is always impressive. It's not cheap but it's worth the price for this level of service & flavors presented. We got the fruit, tomatoes & lumpia apps. The pig pull noodles, duck adobe & striped bass. All delicious and flavorful. Mt favorite thing of the night was the cheese ice cream. We also got peach ice cream to share. Also good but that cheese though!!! Sit at the bar and watch the magic! Get a reservation if you can!

Great and unique experience in ashville. Lucky to score a Resy while visiting but had to do it a month in advance! The service and food was amazing. The flavors bold yet subtle to enjoy. I wish I came with 4 people so we could order more things. I only wish they had small or half entree and appetizer portion sizes for 2 people vs 4 people to be able try more items. We enjoyed the oysters as a starter with the scallop crudo and a nice cocktail with coconut water. Both were excellent with nice flavors. For dinner we enjoyed the sea-bass in coconut milk broth and duck adobo to share. Both were spectacular and highly recommend getting! My only critique is I wished we were served the fish first and duck last as usually we prefer eating meat last and was richest in flavor. We were served our oysters, scallop first, then duck adobo and then at the the fish dish last. Small suggestion but doesn't take away from the service or food. Vibe is eclectic , intimate, yet focusing on food which is the star here'. Price point is great for the quality and quantity. Highly suggest going if you can score a Resy here. Worth the hype and recognitions and must visit while in ashville.

Do they accept walk-ins without a reservation?

There is a standing space at the counter with no seating that can serve food for two, but reservations are STRONGLY advised.

How many lumpia rolls are in an order?

It was 2 or 3. They were long and narrow. Crunchy, and deeply satisfying. Served with a spiced vinegar sauce. Quite delicious. Definite must order.

We wanted them extra crispy - the kitchen did not execute. Fried rice was perfect - crunchy with plenty of protein, a combination of shrimp and chicken. Portion size was large. Would definitely return. Classic flavors, friendly service and good value. Highly recommend without any reservations. Enjoyed the experience.

I was honestly surprised to come across a Filipino restaurant in the middle of East Tennessee but glad I did. The menu isn't too big only has a handful of different items to choose from, both times I've been there I've gotten their bbq plate which you can choose with all rice white or fried or half and half which is rice and pancit and also comes with lumpia. I love the smoky flavor on the bbq chicken I wish it had a little more sauce on it but it's still really good. The lumpia is kind of too sweet for my liking, I'm more of a savory type of person and maybe I'm just not used to this type. Their pineapple sorbet is AMAZING I would go back for that everyday if I could haha. It's owned and staffed by a family from the West Coast, they are all friendly and welcoming. I'm from the West Coast and this was my first time getting Filipino food since I moved here three years ago so it was nice to come across a place that reminded me of back home.
