I have been bringing my clothes here for years, and they always charged the same for men's and women's button down oxford cotton shirts. They said they could put them in the same machine and charge the same. A new employee today charged me twice as much for the ladies shirt, saying he could not put it on the same machine this store has been doing for years. Neighbors Cleaners is the best in the city - truly. I lived nearby their location for many years and they always had incredible service (including altering my wedding dress and several minor alterations over the years!). When I moved a couple of miles away, I stopped going here to find a closer service. It wasn't until I tried out 2-3 other locations that I realized that Neighbors is truly the most reliable service with the best prices in the area, so I'm giving them back my business. I picked up my cleaning and a shirt was missing. When I returned twice and spoke to the owners. They remember I brought my shirt in to be cleaned and was told it was with my cleaning when I picked up the clothing. Why would I return to speak with the owner twice about my shirt. The mission was simple. I asked whether it was possible to repair some jeans that I brought to Neighbors. I specifically mentioned that if this was not something that they could handle, I would understand. Not only did they accept the challenge, but they also charged $26 for it. The result? 1 star. Two pieces of patchwork had been installed at the seat of the jeans while the threads from my jeans had been sewn to the back of the patchwork. Total estimated cost of "repair": 25 cents. Total estimated time of "repair": 15 minutes. When I mentioned that this wasn't exactly what I consider a "repair", the clerk avoided my eyes. I have previously used this place for alterations. This place is definitely cheaper to get pants hemmed than the others in the area. I was charged $12 plus tax to Ham [sic] a pair of pants. The hem seems like a decent job and the pants have a nice crease ironed in them. They're not hemmed for me, so I can't comment on the correct length, but I dropped off on Wednesday at lunchtime and they were ready by two on Friday. They claim to use environmentally friendly cleaning practices as well. read more

Neighbors cleaners did a fantastic job repairing a couple of items. The first, I was delighted when I scored a nice long parka on sale, and then the zipper broke within a month. I wasn't sure what the cost should be or if it was even going to be worth repairing the coat. First the gentleman attempted to fix it by clipping replacement "teeth" into the zipper as that would have saved $$ for me but that just didn't work so it was a total replace on the long zipper, the total was $40 for that piece and 48 hour turn-around which was much more reasonable than I was expecting. Smaller repairs (think minor sewing) is $5.00. I appreciate the attempt to fix in the most affordable way first and the quick turn around time. read more

I went here once 2 years ago to get a chocolate sauce stain off of the front of a white pink dress and they did a great job! Fast forward to the present... I bought a new winter coat on Boxing Day and by February the zipper was broken! I went all over the Hill asking different tailors and cleaners if they could fix it. Everyone said the whole zipper would need to be replaced. One shop refused to do it, another admitted it would be too expensive and didn't even give me a price, the third shouted that he'd charge me $65. I got the coat for $85 on sale, so paying that much for a zipper seemed crazy. I finally tried Neighbors Cleaners. The man working the counter took at look at my coat and came to the same conclusion as all the other cleaners. BUT he was up for the job! (or he said his wife would be at least!). He immediately brought over different lengths and colors of zippers. Now this coat goes to my knees and the only zipper long enough was silver metal. I said that would be okay, but he said it would look bad and that I should have a black zipper so it all matches. He said he would call back with a quote since they would need to special order a zipper. Fast forward two weeks. I hadn't gotten a call from them yet (and I admit I could have called much earlier, but I was busy and not really thinking), so I call to check in. The coat was ready to pick up! They said it would be $42. I went after work to pick it up. The same man was there and he apologized for it being more expensive then he thought it would be and that no one called me. (My ticket said "CALL FOR PRICE" on it). I was just happy it was under $50! The zipper is securely stitched in, seems heavy duty (much better than the old broken zipper was!), and bonus that it's even longer! The old zipper stopped at least 6 inches before the bottom of the coat, but this one is only and inch or two from the bottom. More zipper! It would have been 5 stars if they called to confirm price before doing the work, but I needed this work done and it was done for less than I expected so I'm sticking with 4 stars. Plus I had a great experience using their cleaning services. I would definitely come back here for more work or to get more food stains out of my clothes :) read more

Average dry cleaners, as far as cheaper dry cleaners are concerned. I've been going there for about two years, only only only once or twice the job was done poorly. The owner is pretty quiet, but the girl who works behind the desk is sweet. She sometimes gives you a discount if you ask for one. Have not done alterations there, but the dry cleaning there is cheap and gets the job done. UPDATE: The more I come here, the more this place grows on me. It's like a weird neighbor that does tai chi every morning - the more you see this place, the more you get used to it and even begin to feel like it belongs in the neighborhood. read more

Stole bronze vintage buttons from my velvet jacket. I put a jacket in to have a rip repaired. My jacket had a bronze vintage five button closure and was returned to me with five faux (plastic) bronze metal buttons. The repair was stellar but the button swap was a stroke of crooked genius. I only checked the repair upon pay and didn't notice the buttons until I was home:-( I advise photographing your items and the fixtures on them before leaving anything to be serviced here. read more

THEY RUINED MY SHIRT. AVOID! I spilled some coffee on my best white shirt, and took it in for what should have been routine dry cleaning to get it removed before my job interview. I pointed out the stain and they said that they could remove it in time for my interview. I come back after the weekend, and the stain is still there. I ask them about it, and they say that they'll try again to get it out, but they can't have it ready in time for my interview. I tell them I'm worried that, due to the heat from pressing the shirt, they may have set the stain into the fabric permanently. The owner tells me not to worry; he can get it out "no problem," he claims. I come back three days later and the stain is STILL there. I point it out to the owner, and he blames me for not pointing the stain out in the first place, as if I hadn't already done so TWICE! Then he yells at me for "trying to ruin his business" when I ask for my money back. I take the shirt to another dry cleaning place down the street and, just as I figured, they told me that the stain would have been easy to remove at first, but the heat from the press has set the stain into the fabric. It's obvious that the owner doesn't care about his work or his customers. There are plenty of other cleaners in the area that do. Go there instead! read more

This is the cheapest place to launder shirts. If you bring in at least one piece of dry cleaning they only charge $1.10 for each shirt you get cleaned and pressed. I think the minimum is five shirts. read more

Have taken a few things here. Smaller items seemed to be ok. Always punctual. Boy was I snowed. I just took a Billy Reid, wool 3/4 coat to have it cleaned. There are pieces of accent leather on the coat, and also, a large portion of the collar. Each of these pieces was a rich, dark-brown color. Their windows indicate they handle leather and suede, but I asked them to be careful of the leather anyway. Their response was, "No Problem." I got the coat back, and this piece of leather looked like it had been bleached. All of the exposed pieces have a sandy color now. The owner argued that it wasn't his responsibility, as he was a dry cleaner. He told me my coat must've been poor quality. Utter baloney, as I asked my contact at Billy Reid, if they'd had any problems with the leather on these coats. They said they had not. I will never taking anything here again, and I will be trying to recoup the money I spent and possibly a new coat. read more

I had a bad experience here with a simple alteration. I went to get pair of pants hemmed. The price was pretty average for the neighborhood ($10), but the work was very bad. The first time I went to pick up the pants, they had been "hemmed" without being pressed. Not only was the hem uneven, there were gaps in the stitching. About half of the fabric wasn't even attached by the stitches. The woman at the counter took them back at my request. When I went to pick them up the second time, the hem was still uneven, but at least the stitching seemed to be attached to the rest of the pants. I had pretty much given up at this point, so I took them home. After one wear, the stitching unraveled. The dry cleaning services are ok, but I would go elsewhere for alterations. read more

The review here is about customer service, rather than their effectiveness at dry cleaning. I have been a regular customer at Neighbors Cleaners for 2 years. I go in at least twice per month. But I've begun to wonder why. The clerks are almost never friendly, frequently having a vacant look in their eyes. They never know who I am -- it as if I am a total stranger every time I enter -- weird for a neighborhood business. Then today was the final straw. I ran to the store after work, getting there at 7:00 pm on the dot. They were walking out the door and claimed that the computer was already turned off. I explained that I really needed my suit for tomorrow for work, that they don't open early enough for me to come before work, that I am a loyal customer who spends all of my dry cleaning and alteration money here, and that it's only just 7:00 now. Couldn't they please just let me pick up my suit? The response I got . . . . It wasn't, "Oh sure, no problem Customer-Who-I-at-Least-Recognize. Come on in.". It wasn't even, "Gosh, I'm really sorry but I turned the computer off early, and it can't be turned back on because . . . ." Nope, what I got, and I'm not exaggerating, was a completely blank stare and a repetitive "The computer is already turned off, Customer-Of-Whom-I-Don't-Even-Have-the-Slightest-Recognition-At-All". I know they work hard for probably little pay and don't want to stay late. I get it. And had there been a line pushing in behind me or had this been the 3rd time that I pulled this move, then I'd be more understanding. But this isn't the kind of service that I expect as a loyal customer at a local, neighborhood business. So I give up. I'll get my suit tomorrow (though God knows what I'll wear to work) and never go back. read more

I agree with the others reviewing Neighbor's Cleaners. I tried them a year ago, and the customer service was nonexistent. My current cleaners, try as they may to satisfy me, and as close to my home as they are, can't get the job done. They are however at least very nice and accommodating with me, as I am with them. Neighbor's Cleaners sends a clear message that they prefer that you go elsewhere. I tried again today, and a gentleman took my clothes. (I started to say helped me, but that would be hubris) He had a neutral to nasty disposition, but I get the impression he is one of the owners, as opposed to a low-paid employee. After receiving my receipt, I happened to think to inquire as to their definition of 'medium' starch in my shirts. He asked me, "You tell me!" Evidently my starch preference was already in his computer from a year ago, and instead of asking me to confirm this, I got a flippant attitude. I responded by informing him that it is his business and not mine, and that it was his job to tell me what medium starch meant at his establishment. I had three pairs of my pants hemmed here. They hemmed the pants to precisely the lengthy I asked for but they forgot one of the pant legs. Additionally, it turns out, I had asked for an incorrect length--too short. They fixed all three pairs for free. I have also had new heals put on my shoes here. They did a decent job. Not overly friendly but I appreciate that they fixed my pants--no questions asked. read more

The owner refused to take responsibility (all we wanted was for them to remove the spots) and was his usual grumpy counterman. We won't be spending another nickel at this place.
