Just left this place and what a truly and utterly disappointing meal I just had. I should've known it was going to go south when I saw Ting in a can... Let's start with the good - the salad dressing was delish,the rice and gungo peas had a good base with the coconut coming thru and the homemade ginger beer/lemonade was good. Everything else was just bad - I mean REALLY bad. Roti skin - bland Curry goat - no flavor, no spice and HOW do you manage to have watery gravy with potatoes in the pot?!?! Ugh! Curry chicken - just as bland, flavorless and again watery gravy with potatoes in the pot. To top it all off, it ended up being approx. $75USD. THIS CANNOT BE LIFE! Whomever was in the kitchen needs to return to yard for lessons because this was HORRIBLE. Now I have to say I wasn't expecting to eat Jamaican food this evening when I headed out with some of the ladies but this had me reeling with delight. We had planned to try Manco Franco pizza's but due to the snow, they weren't open. As a result I mush mush mushed the girls up the hill to this little place that I had heard such great things about. Now this has to be hands down one of the most pleasant dining experiences of my life. Table for 5, no problem. BYOB, no problem. We are just waiting for our friends, no problem. They were so laid back, it was almost horizontal! But that didn't mean that the service was sloppy or that the food took ages. Quite the opposite. A friendly helpful waitress who dealt with the whole place on her own and not only that, the chef actually comes out to deliver your food, piping hot goodness that it is. Sweet plantain wedges were completed perfectly when some uncultured person I was with demanded ketchup. The waitress suggested some sort of lime dip instead which was "to die for"! Now this is meat-tastic with ribs, chicken and goat on the menu, but being a true Jamaican spot it serves vegan and vegetarian dishes from their Rastafarian selection. Not only that but there is a wonderful looking breakfast menu and Blue Mountain coffee. So all in all, this tiny little spot was a perfect dinner location, I now have to go wash the ribs and BBQ sauce off my face, actually if I sleep with it still there I can have it for breakfast. read more

The salt fish fritters were great and came with a very tasty and spicy hot sauce. I also enjoyed my appropriately spicy goat stew which was nicely complemented by my side of rice and peas. Negril is a Jamaican restaurant situated in Brixton Hill, about a 15 minute walk from Brixton tube station. It's a hidden gem tucked away from the main busy Brixton high street. It came to my attention via Yelp's Secret Brixton event which highlights places around Brixton. I went down there around 6pm and was a bit apprehensive as we were the only customers there, but it was a Monday which is usually quiet in many restaurants. It's a pretty sizeable restaurant with plenty of tables/chairs and Bob Marley playing over the sound system. It was clean and tidy and even has an area in the front where people can eat and chill out outside. Presently they have standing heaters in case it gets cold, but I can imagine it's a really cool place to eat, drink and enjoy during Summer time too. The staff member taking our order was very attentive, accommodating, didn't mind us asking lots of questions about the menu and was generally just came across as a nice smiley person, so ordering was made very easy. I wasn't very hungry so ordered an ackee and saltfish starter with fried plantain which was reasonably priced . I wasn't sure about the dish as ackee if not made right can be quite bland, but when I tried it, it was so flavoursome I ended up really enjoying it. It was seasoned perfectly and went down really well with the salt fish and plantain. Service was quick aswell as payment. I highly recommend this restaurant, I definitely want to come back and try some other dishes and I suspect that this place gets a lot busier after after 7pm so I'll b booking a table next time. read more

Negril is a culinary holiday. Their food is scrumptious, filling and inexpensive. I got a quarter of jerk chicken, homemade lemonade, rice and peas and plantains all for just under a tenner. I licked the plate. The atmosphere in here is very cozy. The ceiling is law, the walls are painted in warm colours and the table legs rub against each other. It is small, but not at all claustrophobic. I felt like I was ensconced in a food blanket. One of the most excellent aspects of this place is the fact that they deliver! If you're having a lazy day and you don't feel like leggin' it to go get some quality food all you have to do is pick up the phone, place an order and wait for deliciousness to arrive at your doorstep. They also do party platters that consists of a whole heap of gorgeous food and a free six pack of Red Stripe for a mere £50. All in all, Negril is a winner. read more

Everything was absolutely wonderful: the drinks, the starters, the mains and the service. We started with the salt fish fritters and plantains which were really well made. Throughout the evening we had many drinks, the beer selection was nice and the cocktails were strong yet delicious. Our mains were also really well done. This may become my favorite restaurant in all of London. Who wants to join me here again next week, and the week after, and the week after, just to be sure? We stumbled in here on a freezing cold night, but we quickly warmed right up inside this cozy Caribbean joint. It's a good thing we were hungry, as the default portion size is 'feast'. The jerk chicken was perfectly cooked, and served with huge helpings of bbq sauce and hot sauce- which is truly hot. The rice and peas were great, and even better were the plantain wedges. I wasn't as into the ribs that I stole off the plates of my compadres, but I was into the dessert I stole off them. This place is also BYOB (at a very small charge), which is good and bad. Good because it saves on the cost of dinner. Bad because your group may end up drinking enough that someone asks out the waitress. Or so I'm told. All in all, we stumbled out so full that we could hardly fit any beer into our bellies later that evening. A glorious time, and one that I hope to repeat soon. read more

I hate waiting and more than that I hate star dropping! Anybody who knows me, knows I don't do waiting, and on my last visit I spent more time trying to catch the eye of a member of staff, than I did anything else. I like Negril, but I can't accept bad service. Being seated, ordering and the food arriving was fine (even though that wasn't great, but I'll come back to that), but after we had finished eating, it took a little while to take our plates away - ok I can cope with that too. However we waited about 20 minutes (perhaps longer) before we were able to get somebodies attention to ask which desserts they had. Yes, we had to ask them! After the woman told us, she walked away and didn't return to ask of we actually wanted anything. Needless to say we were far to irritated at the point to proceed so we decided to ask for the bill. The story does go on but it's to frustrating & dull to bother with the details. It took a further 10 minutes and 3 request to actually receive the bill. I had the curry goat with rice and peas. The curry goat was rather bland with no bite to it at all, and the rice and pea was not prepared the 'proper way' with coconut milk and a fresh scotch bonnet, or at least it didn't taste like it did. I loved everything about Negril. Rather than reading what would inevitably turn into a long-winded confirmation post that relates my love, you can read this handy and more accessible list instead: 1) The whole place has a genuinely family-run vibe about it. And, no, this doesn't equate to 'cheap' or 'Ikea'. 2) The whole place has a genuinely laid-back vibe (perhaps because of its Caribbean heritage, but also see 1 above). Be aware, however, that this also probably means you'll receive very laid-back (ie, slow) service. But don't sweat it. You're in Jamaica. 3) The al fresco dining space is rather large, and, despite being located right on top of the busy Brixton Hill, it is quiet, sunny (if you're lucky), intimate and boarded in by potted greenery. 4) The menu has a sizeable vegan Rastafarian section, so Negril accommodates both the jerk-chicken-loving as well as the veggie-centric diner. 5) While it wasn't available on my visit, Negril serves the world-renowned Blue Mountain coffee. It's pricey, yes, but Negril is the only establishment in London that I've encountered to sell/brew it. 6) BYO. And not just alcohol. Want to bring your favourite juice or fizzy drink to enjoy with your searingly hot jerk sauce? No problem. 7) And, most importantly, Negril serves delicious, inexpensive and authentic food. We booked a table for 12 for a birthday. The Birthday girl even went down to check out the menu and figure out where we could all sit. But when we arrived, we were told that because we were such a large group, we could only order from the platter menu--which only gives you two options. A curry platter or a jerk chicken platter. Not exactly what we were expecting. We were then left sitting for over an hour before they even took our order, sighting other large parties as the issue. But frankly I don't really care if there are other large parties. If they provide the seating shouldn't the kitchen be able to cope? Maybe I should have put my laid back Caribbean brain in, but I'm not even sure that would have kept people's hungry tummies from being annoyed. When the food actually arrived it was quite good and really inexpensive, which is why it gets 2 stars instead of just 1. But I still probably won't be back. read more

Buoyed by the positive reviews from other Yelpers, we trekked (well, got the bus) up Brixton Hill to Negril. The memory I had of Negril was in all it's summer glory - colourful seating outside, big potted trees etc - but what we found, in the dark, was a much more reserved affair, only squinting from the street showed that there were people inside. Negril is warm and welcoming . We were shown to a table by the one and only serving staff and waited. I warned my lady friend about the potential 'Caribbean' service, but she turned out to be prompt and oh so friendly. We opted for the Negril Platter - £22 of deliciousness. Jerk chicken, saltfish fritters, slaw, fries, plantain wedges, gravy, salad, roti, rice and peas. We chuckled to ourselves as the kind lady tried to squeeze all the individual serving dishes onto our small table for two. And what a feast it was. The food was simple yet delicious. Really enjoyed the atmosphere in here, it was so very chilled. Conversation all around and everyone very much enjoying their BYO booze. I'm knocking off one star for the price I guess. Caribbean food is normally cheap and tasty wherever you get it in Brixton - and this is fairly steep in comparison. I'd happily pay it again though. I was very early to a gig at the nearby Brixton Windmill and was unfortunately informed there that not only did they not serve food but that "there was no good food in the area". They were very very very wrong.... Fortunately I had my iphone with me and was able to discover the delightful Negril. This charming and down to earth restaurant specialises in Jamaican food and was buzzing, despite this being a Wednesday night. I was sat in the inner room which is practically within the kitchen. The sounds and aromas were truly delightful and I should add that the staff were extremely friendly making me feel welcome. I settled on ordering jerk chicken with sides of plantains and rice & peas and some homemade lemonade. It is no exaggeration to say it was some of the best Caribbean style food I have eaten and practically melted in my mouth. It had been months and months since I last had a good Jamaican breakfast. With my cousin in town and ever lusting after Jamaican food, we decided we would take the 45 minute trip to Negril. We got there a little after 1pm. Fortunately for us, there wasn't much of a wait. We were seating, given menus and proceeded to get down to business. I had the ackee & salt fish with fried dumplings and a side of jerk sausage. it was so good I "forgot" to offer him some (super selfish, I know but it had been so long, I simply couldn't resist). And to be fair he had jerk chicken, plantain, rice and peas and a few other things I can't remember... It was all good! Oh, and the best part- I ordered coconut water, and it arrived freshly chopped in a coconut! At that point, I think I knew I would be back! Not the best I've ever had but pretty damn good! Never had carribbean food, but decided to give this place a try after all the amazing reviews. Service can be a bit slow, but all the staff are very friendly. They don't serve alcohol here which is why I took away a star, but you are allowed to bring your own. We need alcohol with our food we stopped by the corner shop to pick up a few Red Stripes to go along with our meal. So this is my little local cafe- i must say not exactly cafe prices but the food is yummy to make up for it. i'm a fan of the tofu curry and the veggie burger and THE CARROT CAKE which is the best tasting thing on Brixton Hill- sweet but not too sweet and always warm. There's a great variety, a mix of meats and vegan (i personally try out the vegan stuff) I've never had problems with service which has always been fast (i've only started coming in the past 6 months or so... maybe they've listened to feedback) and as everyone says, waiters are super friendly. Negril is a colorful, Caribbean-inspired little juice bar and eat in or take away joint in the center of Hildreth street (the wide alleyway/footpath between the very top of Beford Hill and Balham High Rd). The ambiance is like something straight out of a Caribbean island...like a really nice and big rum shack. I recently went to the Caribbean and fell in love with their very unique curries. I thought when I left I would not taste those flavours for a while but I have found them right in my own neighborhood! And at a good price too! Negril's main specialty are their fresh juice blends. I had a a citricy, orange-inspired mix with ginger (sorry, I can not remember the specifics) and it was perfect. They also do an assortment of sandwiches and wraps with a Caribbean flare. I have had their bean curry wrap and veggie burger. Both were so similar to the tastes that I miss about the Caribbean and the veggie burger was one of the best I've had. The staff and owner, Tanya, are all extremely friendly. It is probably one of the friendliest places I've been in in Balham. I save my five stars for absolute perfection but this place was close. It was understaffed one day when I came in but the one staff member was bombarded by about 6 orders at 2 in the afternoon, which was a bit unusual. It also gets a bit hot in there but they have air conditioners working on that. Additionally (this may just be a personal preference thing), I just wanted my lunch and a cheap drink to quench my thirst. The only drink they do offer besides their specially made juices is water. For someone who came for the food and not the juices (as the juices are more expensive than your average can of juice) it would have been nice to have just a normal drink. In line with several previous reviews, this is not a place to just pop into for a quick meal. My visit coincided with the unfortunate combination of severe staff shortage, as well as a kitchen disaster. My group of 6 sat at one of the tables outside and were brought menus straight away, so things looked quite promising for service. We quickly realised, however, there were only two main staff running around trying to care for all the tables (at least 50 people). When the waiter finally did come by he dropped the bomb - due to said kitchen disaster, there was no jerk chicken. Or rather, there might be some, later, but it would be well over an hour until it was cooked, and he didn't know if there would be enough for all the orders. He suggested we order other items instead, the curries, ribs, etc - as this would all be ready. As we had already been dipping into our BYOB selections, we decided to just go with the flow, order a selection of other foods and see how it all went. It was about 2 hours later that we finally received our food. Normally, this would infuriate me - but the waiter was so nice and trying his very best with circumstances out of his control, and as I mentioned before we had brought drinks, so were perfectly happy chatting amongst ourselves food-less for longer than normally I'd be prepared to! The food was pretty good - I won't say amazing, which makes me all the more sad that we missed the jerk chicken, their specialty. I found the jerk seasoning on the ribs was almost too hot - and I'm someone who can handle a bit of heat. I think on the chicken it would have been juicy enough to cool it down a bit? The salt fish fritters were just a bit too stodgy and doughy for me, and again I found the fire sauce to be more of a burning taste, and not enjoyable heat. Three stars is pretty generous in my opinion given all the variables around service, wait time, and the lack of chicken, but they did try their best. Great spot for brunch on a friday or weekend. A little pricier for brunch than a few of the other options on Brixton Hill, but really good. Excellent variety of dishes on offer for those looking for a full English grease platter to a delightful variety of fruits and more traditional Caribbean offerings. Absolutely loved my lunch here. Smoothie to start with which really rid my hangover. That was quickly followed by a jerky wrap that made my taste buds cry with joy and happiness. I first went to Negril in summer of 2008. Loved it. Small, busy, plenty verve. Thought I'd give it a go with a friend, recommending their refined West Indian dishes. I was not impressed this time around. The owner seemed annoyed that we hadn't booked a table. They seemed overly concerned with the party of 14-odd who were celebrate some birthday and didn't pay much attention to the rest of the patrons. We had to wait 20 minutes to place an order, another 45 to wait for the food. The food was pretty good but the portions did seem smaller and the prices slightly dearer. Opted not to have dessert and getting our bill was another mission. On the way out, we spotted 2 of the 3 waiters having a cigarette break at the same time. Hmm. Service. read more

Negril Negril Negril! I had such a fun night here, strong strong alcoholic drinks and delicious authentic Jamaican food! My boyfriend travelled in Jamaica for 2 months so I was hoping that Negril would meet his authentic expectations, and it sure did! The atmosphere in this place is very laid back too, with all of the staff being friendly and caring, but having a laid back, stress-free attitude too. The food was interesting and delicious, and the portion sizes were great. I don't remember it being too expensive either. It was a disgrace that I hadn't been to Negril given that I only live five minutes away. I have now been twice in the week - once for dinner and once for breakfast. Dinner - went for the jerk chicken roti wrap. Fantastic. Next time I am going to go for the curry selection, it looked and smelled delicious. Really liked the bring-your-own action. Just note, it is a £2.50 corkage per person regardless of how much you drink, so it can make a can of beer a bit pricey! Just means you need to drink more. A great place to have a birthday-do or just share a hearty meal. I don't even bother to look at the menu anymore - I always split the Negril platter with someone. It's not in a terribly convenient location and the service isn't the quickest, so it's not a place you'd just drop by. Be warned that it's BYO and there's a charge. But it's still a great place to hang out or celebrate at, since the staff's friendly and the food's good. Once, a kind old man who worked there gave me some ackee and saltfish to try off his own dinner plate! I sincerely hope this small business stays afloat for a good long time. read more

Negril has some seriously good jerk chicken. It's a bit of a walk from central Brixton, but that's why you'd be luckier finding seats here. I know that Rum Kitchen is opening up soon closer to the Village, and Fish Wings and Tings are already there, but Negril is probably always going to be a good, more peaceful alternative. Came here last night for my friends send off meal (she's going traveling in Peru) and I was really surprised and impressed. Not only were the staff lovely and attentive but the food was really tasty with really well sized portions for a great price. I got mango sorbet for dessert and I could barely finish it because there was so much (but I persevered, I never give up on mango sorbet). I'll definitely be returning, it's a hidden gem of Brixton. 100% recommend. read more

This Jamaican restaurant produces great food for around £10 a dish. We had the jerk chicken and a curry. The chicken was a very sizeable portion, and as it came with two sides there was a real nice choice. The curry was very well spiced, although the portion was a little small. Friends and food can never go wrong wherever you go, but Negrill brought an extra little spark to our night, with their great hospitality, the amazing and mouth watering food, and the atmosphere. Negril is one of my favourite places in London and a place we always, always celebrate birthdays and the staff are so nice. It's best to book well in advance now, as people are crazy for the place. Also, if you have a large group you have to order the platter which can be a plain. However, I am upset that they stopped doing BYOB - one of the reasons I didn't mind how much the platters are (which I do find to be quite pricy) was because the BYOB made it an easy, fun and affordable option for big groups... It's consistently the best jerk place in South London. Everything's home-made (even the coleslaw) and utterly delicious. The saltish fritters and hot sauce are to die for. Their rice and peas are excellent - fluffy and cocoanutty. Jerk chicken is well flavoured, tender and even a quarter piece is packed with meat. We live very nearby Negril, and have eaten there several times. The food is delicious! Our favourites are the goat curry and the ribs, but they have some great vegan and veggie options too (try the pumpkin curry), and I always order plantain wedges as a side for whatever I get. The staff are attentive and friendly. The ambience is relaxing, cosy in cold weather, but there's also a lovely front garden you can enjoy on nicer days. It's become quite a popular place, so even on a Monday or Tuesday, it's advisable to book ahead, especially if your party is larger than two people. read more

'Amazing', is all I can actually say! Wow wow wow. I absolutely adore how genuine this place is, authentic Caribbean food, at realistic prices. This place serves everything from deliciously marinated ribs, to goat curry, and the plantain wedges are to die for! I have a slight problem where by if I order something with 'wedge' in the title then I need something to dip it in, I suggested ketchup but the lady I asked said 'try this', lime mayonnaise, the perfect accompaniment to plantain wedges!
