Best selection of threads in New Orleans! Great selection of canvases. I love their plastic needle works pouch!

If you're looking for a Nola themed needlepoint canvas, absolutely check out their online shop!…read moreThey have classic New Orleans and Louisiana designs you can't get anywhere else, and even though they closed the Magazine St location, I can assure you, they are still a vibrant design and finishing studio! Sally is a gem in the needlepoint community with decades of experience, and Jules can custom design anything -- anything!! They keep so many threads in stock, including a variety of carded threads like Splendor Silk, and best of all, they're so, so sweet. I've been able to purchase threads on Sundays and after 4 pm on weekdays. I just call ahead to see if they have what I need and if it's ok to come by. :)

There are so few brick and mortar small business needlework shops. I am always looking for Rainbow Gallery thread, Splendor and when I stepped into the store - there was a whole display! I was thrilled but my excitement was quickly dampened by the store clerk when I was promptly asked "What can I do for you?" in a horribly cold voice, from the back of the store. This woman made no attempt to get up as I came in and I explained I was very excited to be in a store that sold embroidery supplies and I make it a point to check them out when I come across one. She told me "We don't sell embroidery supplies." I looked at her and the thread and back at her and I said "You have embroidery floss right here." She said again "We don't sell embroidery supplies" and made no attempt at all to inquire if I needed something specific, if she could help me find something or order me something because clearly a store that might not sell embroidery specific supplies has access to catalogues that carry it. Not to mention there are always the ubiquitous accessories, needles and junk that ANY needleworker can use. See, I have worked customer service my whole life and I pretty much have never felt so unwelcome in any small business establishment as this space. I didn't want to leave because I needed to purchase this particular silk thread they had a giant display of. I took myself over to the floss and started to color match to my piece that I am working on, when I travel I always carry something with me. As my husband and I looked at the thread and he helped me pick out colors this clerk came over to us and stood about 4 feet behind and just watched as we selected threads. I finally turned and asked her if she needed something because she was making me so uncomfortable and irritated at her rudeness. She made some noises and then told me my piece was "cute" - a four letter insult in itself, I don't care if she thought it wasn't. Firstly, I don't see how she could have even properly seen it since it was in my lap and I was kneeling. Secondly, woman - you really need to work on your manners and passive aggressive tone. She finally walked off to the sales desk which was directly NEXT to the display. Meanwhile up until this point she had been perfectly content to sit on her butt at the back of the store and not ask us if we needed help. The only kindness either woman (there were two in shop) showed us was when we laid out the money for the thread I had selected and at $4.50 a card this thread is not cheap. Then they joked and chatted with us as if they hadn't been assuming we would make off with a whole bunch of specialty silk thread for some black market. I would have bought SO much more if I didn't feel so unwelcome by these two gatekeepers. Just to give any readers perspective : I am a young, 30-something, heavily tattooed, white woman. I might not look like a serious needlework enthusiast but I am currently in the running for a highly coveted needlework job for the government in my home city. I hate to deter anyone from supporting a local business so I would implore this business to instead WELCOME every single person who chooses your shop over Amazon and other internet shops ESPECIALLY when you have no idea who or what they do. If I'm ever back in NOLA I don't know if I would bother patronizing this store again, it's just too...cute.

I searched for a yarn shop in NOLA but this one was the only shop that interested me. So it will be yarn from "near New Orleans" =) I believe that the owner was there when my husband and I stopped by yesterday. We were greeted immediately and enthusiastically by a beautiful little Sheltie and then by the owner soon after. She was very helpful. I had previously written down options for the pattern I'm using and she helped my find exactly what I need. While she wound my yarn we looked around and tried to befriend her dog (unsuccessful). This shop is pretty nice. It is in an old building, is well-lit, and is well stocked. Prices are comparable to prices I've seen at other local yarn stores. I would definitely recommend McNeedle's and would definitely shop here often if I lived in the area.

They carry all price points but never any cheap quality yarn one could find at a big box store. So much temptation every time you walk in the door! The staff is all so friendly and knowledgeable. They are always able and willing to give an opinion, help get you out of a tough spot on your current challenge, or help select that perfect project. Although I live too far away to attend any of the monthly class offerings, I have attended the annual Yarnover event where they bring in a big name designer/teacher for the weekend. That event is totally awesome and what makes it so wonderful is Pam and her team going above and beyond !! Unlike the LYSs that come and go, this one is here to stay! What is the difference, you ask? Pam, the owner, not only is passionate about her knitting and fine yarns, but she runs her store like a business verses a hobby. Go ahead...visit McNeedles...you'll see for yourself!

I was at the window peering inside, promising myself that I'd return during business hours. Then I saw the twirl of two knitting needles and noticed a person was holding them, working on their own project. To my shock, the sign on the door listed hours until 11 pm. I saw the neon "OPEN" sign alit, but I assumed that someone forgot to turn it off. When you step inside you feel like you've entered a cozy new dimension. The owner, Ellie, gave me a tour of the magical space. I got to see the custom coffin where they dry their hand dyed yarn, the knitting group room where you can come in and work on creative projects with others or hop onto the Google meet rooms and join them virtually. Ellie also offers a FREE knitting class. There's also a larger selection of yarn than you'd think from the small storefront. Inside you'll find more than one room of assorted yarn. I walked away from what felt like a sanctuary with a bounty of beautiful heavyweight acrylic that I'm using to make pompoms. In this time of endless subscriptions and fewer third spaces, it's touching to see a business foster community the way that YarNOLA is doing. I can't wait to go back.

They have a unique selection of hand dyed yarn from various dyers around the country and their own hand dyed yarn (dyed in shop!) as well as a large selection of colors and materials of imported yarn. How do I know all of this? The owner gave me a tour of the whole place and told me about each of the dyers she sells for. It was amazing! She also listened to what my upcoming project was and provided suggestions of yarns for me! The hand dyed yarns aren't cheap, but they are 100% worth the cost, especially with many of them having a percentage of the purchase going to a cause. They are pretty comparable to the cost of most hand dyed yarns I've seen. The imported yarn is a great price! Cheaper than a lot of other places and I was a big fan of the ones I bought. They also have some awesome handmade acrylic crochet hooks in fun colors! Highly recommend, especially if you are looking for an alternative to big box craft stores.
