Burton Log Cabin - Evaporation room

Burton Log Cabin & Sugar Camp is a working sugar house in downtown Burton. It is operated by the…read moreBurton Chamber of Commerce. I didn't have this sugar house on my itinerary of places to visit. Instead I just wandered in while at the Apple Butter Fest and Burton Fall Festival. That's right, both were happening at the same time and it was so fun to adventure to both. The cabin attracted me because so many people were hanging out outside and walking in to check it out. I also had to check it out. AMBIANCE: Cabin vibes with toasty fireplace and chandelier you'd find at a cabin in the wild. One room is the marketplace. Another room is evaporation room for maple syrup production. It wasn't actively working during my visit and I'd love to see its operation. INVENTORY: The sugar house has it all - maple candy, maple syrup (also in bulk), skin care, BBQ sauce, candles, maple cream candy, pancake mix, popcorn, apple butter, coffee, cotton candy, and more. They produce maple syrup every spring, but operate as a shop all year round. They also sell merchandise from local makers. They'll also ship maple products anywhere to you! The inventory was very impressive. The prices seemed pretty reasonable for locally produced maple syrup. SERVICE: The service was very friendly. All customers were immediately served and the line moved very quickly. In full transparency, I was exhausted by the time I walked over to the Burton Log Cabin. My tote was full of apple butter and foods from the Apple Butter Fest. I wasn't in the mood to carry more stuff. I decided to visit during maple season to get their products and check out all the activities! I always find places to visit during maple season and will add this gem to my itinerary.

Took a chance during the virus scare, drove to Burton and found the maple cabin opened. It wasn't…read morebusy so we talked with the people there. They showed us the local maple syrups for sale, the sweet eats, pancake mixes, and lots of Ohio made goodies. A man in the syrup production answered questions. I learned that the three-gallon buckets seen on the maple trees can be full of sap in only one night. Sap collecting all depends on the weather. Syrup making has been in production since February. By the end of March sap tapping is wrapping up. Unfortunately, all the pancake breakfasts are cancelled. For all ages.

Heritage Meats - Best hot dogs ever? Quite possibly.

I visited Heritage Meats in Middlefield recently. I was hoping they carried some high quality beef…read moresticks, but they didn't have the kind I wanted. I found some nice looking hot dogs though. A four pack was $3.71 and they were plump. This joint was jumpin'. There were people slicing meat, stocking shelves, ringing people up, chopping up sections of beef, and what have you. I felt like I had stepped back into the year 1800. I was very impressed with the establishment. I bought the hot dogs and some beef sticks. At home, I was a little too excited, so I microwaved one of the hot dogs for one minute. I thought to myself, "Hmmm. These are Amish hot dogs. I wonder if they're fully cooked." I ate it anyway. It was the best microwaved hot dog I've ever tasted. It had a good amount of moisture and a ton of flavor with a hint of smokiness. Loved it. A while later I thought, "That was a great hot dog, why not have another?" So I did. When my wife and son got home, I told them about the hot dog experience. The next day, they ate the two remaining hot dogs and agreed with me regarding their flavor. Now I have to drive an hour to Middlefield to buy more of these amazing hot dogs. Luckily, I have business to do in Middlefield. I will be a repeat customer whenever I can.

Heritage Meats has a great selection of meats and other products. I generally get good cuts from…read morethem but the consistency needs to be better. I spent $100 on meat (pork butt and beef ribs). The pork butt was good and well-trimmed. The beef ribs had way too much fat, which jacked up the price. I'll have to take a better look next time I shop before I accept their meat offering.
