I took my time collecting my thoughts for my review because I didn't want to be too quick to judge. I've gotten Marley Twists & Box Braids (+ redo edges) from here. Overall, Kendall, the owner, is nice & fair and the braiders are talented and do a neat job BUT they do take longer than expected sometimes and the talent/professionalism is not standard across all braiders. For example, when I got my Marley Twists: they were neat, stayed in a long time, weren't too tight but it took 7 hours for medium/midback length and the main braider kept using a metal clip to part my hair which hurt a lot and damaged my hair, I'm sure. I kept wincing and asking her to use a comb but she just kept on using the clip and apologizing. 7 hours was way too long for the amount of women that were in my hair - up to 4 at one point. When I got my box braids originally, again they were neat, and not too tight. The braider even asked me if she was braiding too tight. But I guess they didn't understand when I said three times that I wanted ABOVE midback length. When it was done, I had midback length braids AND they tried to overcharge me for it. Also, one of the braiders kept saying how she was sick and hungover while braiding my hair - quite unprofessional. Here's where I drew the last straw, since they did my original box braids, I decided to return to get a tune up. First of all, super expensive to get the edges redone EVEN after I'd taken them down myself. Nonetheless, I accepted the price and came back. I was late & also requested that she cut my original braids (see above issue) so I was thankful that they still took my appointment and add'l request but it took them 4 hours for 2-3 rows around the edges. ?! Partly because in between braids, the owner who was working on me was clicking through social media videos and socializing with the other braiders. Also, it seemed there was a novice working on my hair because my back edges were pulled WAY TOO TIGHT - see picture from one week after getting the edges redone. I was so disappointed that the owner would allow that to happen because of my respect for her and how nice & professional she'd been to me on previous occasions. Like any black hair salon there can be drama here any given day. The shop is bustling all the time and the ladies working here are talented. The owner Kendall is a passionate and proud woman. She stands up for her craft and her business and the work done by her and her team back it up. I got Nubian Twist which is a style in have come to stick with. I absolutely love my hair! I did not leave here in pain...the braiders are gentle. I spent pretty much all day in the chair this go around but it was worth the wait. Called in to make an appointment and ask a few questions I had! Owner was rude and very dismissive, told me she was on the phone and couldn't talk right now. This is my second time getting my hair braided and I love my box braids! Pros: *My twist are super pretty and neat *The braiders were super gentle and did not braid tight *I will be returning to get my hair redone because I'm really happy with the outcome. Cons *Although I was the first person who entered the salon, I felt like I was waiting at times. I was at the salon for 7 hours and I only had three braiders for a total 2 hours. Braiders would stop working on my head to start someone else's braids who walked in. I observed other customers who had 3 and 4 stylist on their head at once. If my work schedule was flexible, I would totally go on a weekday. So let me start off with I was super impressed with the fact that I was able to make an appointment the same day! I had been researching shops and asking for reviews from friends and finally made a decision to go with Neat Pretty Braids. I have friends that have gone to them and their braids we're definitely "neat and pretty". And my crochets were no exception. I got a TON of compliments! The issue was with the filler hair that was weaved into my hair during the cornrowing process. I'm not sure what brand of hair is used or if the hair goes through any kind of "rinse" before it is braided into the customers hair, but I had the worst allergic reaction I have EVER had in my life! My scalp was on fire, my skin itched. I tried tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar/water...nothing worked. I had to remove the hair after only 3 DAYS and then took Benedryl to help stop the itching and burning. And that is a lot of money to just throw away after 3 days not to mention the time it took to get them done. Again, service wasn't the problem. The length of time to complete wasn't the problem. The actual crochet hair wasn't the problem. It was the filler/braid-in hair. If this hair is not being rinsed prior to being installed in a clients head, I suggest that process implemented asap! And as the client , I would suggest you bring your own pre-rinsed filler hair if you have any concerns about the type of hair being fed into your hair. UPDATE (from 2-star to 1-star): I just had a call with the owner in which she described my post as "destroying another black woman" and "destroying her business". She also stated that "God would deal with me for lying" about my experience and that I should have given her a call like she did instead of posting". And they are "known around Houston for being able to catch short hair" but my hair was "so short I shouldn't have gotten the braids because they had to add filler hair to be able to do the work." and that she does the hair of celebrities (even tried to throw in somebody related to Beyonce). She wouldn't even let me get a word in, so when I realized where this conversation was going, I just hung up and decided to put my comments here - Here's the thing, if you truly are a professional with years of experience, the least you can do when someone has an issue is say "I'm sorry". And as a business, if you have issues about being able to do the work, when you have the consultation (which she did when she asked to look at my hair before they started), you should have said so AT THAT TIME and inform your client about the products you will need to use to do the work. And DON'T take a customers money if you can't stand behind every piece of the work. - I never asked for my $160 back, not one dime (and she didn't offer anything either), I never said the that work was bad (I even tried to compliment the ladies that ACTUALLY did my hair to which she said "I don't want your compliments!") - Yep, I will never use this place again and will tell every Black, White, Brown, Puerto Rican, or Haitian to not come here. read more

Even though I arrived 10 minuets late because I literally had my appointment time mixed up, they were still polite and seated me immediately. I had 2-4 people braiding my hair. It took only 5 hours which is a good time frame for me. The ladies were listening to worship music which I though was cool. My braids turned out to be really neat and pretty. I called this place early morning to get my hair done and they were able to get me an appointment that same day. I already had my hair style picked out and had pre text and sent the picture of the style I wanted to the owner. I still had to go online and book the appointment and down payment. Three stylists worked on my hair at the same time. It took a total of 5 hours. I get compliments on my hair wherever I go. The staff was nice and accommodating. My head did not hurt when I got out the chair. They made sure not to braid too tight to the point of your head hurting. Ultimately I will be back to get my hair done again. read more

I owned a salon in Los Angeles for five years. I am now a salon consultant who helps salons fix the type of issues I encountered as a customer at Neat Pretty Braids (Think Tabatha's Takeover). As a person in this industry, I was completely appalled by the experience I had in this salon. The ONLY good thing was that the braids were absolutely gorgeous but unfortunately that is not enough to bring me back. Upon walking in, I was not greeted. The young lady who would be my first braider just pointed to a chair. I brought my own hair because the hair they sell is over priced at $6 per pack. After looking at the hair I brought (standard kanekelon $1.99 braiding hair) she turned up her nose and promptly called the owner to explain why I needed to buy their hair instead. I was fine with that because as a beauty professional I understand having preferences so I agreed to purchase additional hair to ensure my desired result. The owner, Kendall eventually came to the shop and all was well. I even spoke to her about her business and we agreed we would discuss it later. Once my hair was finished, I was so happy with how it looked! However, I noticed it was extremely heavy and tight which is normally what occurs after braids so I figured I would give it a few days. It never got better. The braids were too big for the partings and my scalp was extremely stressed. There were so many braids that I could not even put them into a ponytail. I couldn't sleep because of the weight and length of the braids prevented me from putting them in a pineapple. The hair they used caused my scalp to be itchy, red and burning. I WAS MISERABLE!!!!!! After four days of trying to cope, I called the owner to let her know that I needed to have the braids removed. She said they were closed the day I called even though the hours on the website said they should have been open (I went over there two other times during business hours and they were closed). She never asked why I needed to take the braids down when I had just gotten them done. I spent over $300 including the price of the hair and tips for all three of the girls who braided my hair. Yet she never offered to get me a style that would work better for me. I told her I would come in a few days because I was going out of town. She then called me to ask why I didn't come in (not to make it right for me as a customer but rather to reprimand me) and I told her I had already taken the braids out which ended the conversation. I had to take my braids down on the second day of my trip! I can't tell you how upset I was having to wear a scarf on my head instead of the style I just paid for less than a week prior. At this stage in my life I can not sacrifice my comfort or bodily/hair health to look cute with box braids. This could have been avoided by having a consultation to explain what I would be experiencing as far as the weight. I asked for medium/shoulder length braids but I was given small/mid back braids which I didn't mind the look of it but the weight was unbearable. I paid the price difference with no problems. Take heed, I don't think the lack of customer service is purely cultural. I have been to African hair braiders my entire life. I think this case is really a case of a business owner who is very confident in her product and therefore she doesn't feel the need to cater or provide any customer service because she may believe people will come regardless. I never asked for a refund because the work was done however she really should have offered to either make it right or refund my money. I sincerely hope Kendall learns standard business customer service practices for the beauty industry because the sad reality is that this business will not last long if she doesn't make some serious adjustments. DON'T get passion twists here. They ONLY LASTED ONE WEEK. It looked like my hair grew out for a month already because they twisted it instead of braiding it then twisting it in the front. The owner, Kendall, said it's supposed to be messy. Messy does not mean my hair looks like it's grown out for a month in a week. Then she said oh the hairstyle is supposed to last 2-8 weeks. I DIDN'T EVEN MAKE IT TO 2 weeks. She said it would be 75 on the phone when I called to get the front redone. So when I got it redone she tried to charge me more. And I was like no you said 75 on the phone and I only need to pay 35 because I paid 40 online. It shouldn't be 50 more. You don't deserve 50 more. They only fixed the front three rows. Pros: I was seated close to my appointment time, my braids looked nice, some women in the shop were welcoming, it was fast, three worked on my head the entire time Cons: There were several bugs in the waiting area, I listened to a customer bad-mouth the owner of the shop as I waited, the women doing my hair spoke badly about the customer (after she left) while doing my hair, one of the braiders was braiding extremely tight, and when I told her several times... she would say, "I'm sorry" but continued to braid tight. I don't plan on revisiting the shop. I struggled giving this review because I don't want to cause a business to lose customers. Wow... so this is a first. Neat Pretty Braids braiding salon was so rude and unprofessional that I could not even complete the phone call to schedule a consultation! They are so cantankerous and toxic that I told them never mind and that they are the most unpleasant shop I have ever spoken to. I honestly felt like they obviously did want my business and could not even be bothered to give me a quote or arrange a consultation. They kept asking me which braiders have I gone to before and if I had been to their shop before. They even asked me "do you not know who you called?" I responded by saying yes I found them on Google and I had not been there before. Such a terrible disposition and attitude! I felt like she was annoyed by simply having to answer the phone. I am reading some of the other reviews and others have complained about their customer service. Part of running a service-based business is knowing that customer service and customer satisfaction is critical. The best braiders in Houston and quite possibly Texas. You make your appointment online, it's quick and easy to book and all details and pricing are listed on the website. This is my 3rd visit, the first time I got small/medium box braids, 2nd visit was a touch up and now I came back for a fresh installation of micro braids. The braiders work hard to get you in and out as quickly as possible because it is a process. My small/micro braids normally take 12 hours! They had 4-5 braiders do my hair so it only took 7 hours. Disclaimer: The braiders are all from various countries in Africa so expect a cultural difference in the tone of voice and atmosphere. I say this because it's not going be luxurious or a salon type environment, it's truly a space to get your hair braided. Also, I think some people could be put off my the way the braiders speak to you as a customer or each other. Personally, I take no offense and completely understand that this is merely cultural and in no way meant to offend me as the customer. I've spent a considerable amount of time in Africa and know that this can be perceived inaccurately. It took 3 visits before they started warming up to me. They're super busy and literally spending hours braiding non-stop, don't expect conversations. Most of the ladies have earbuds in or are on the phone. Again, this is fine with me because it's not an easy task and I'm sure it's rough on their hands. What's most important to me is that they listen to what you want and do a wonderful job. I request for my baby hair to be left out, medium tension (I don't want traction alopecia) and if I want a defined part. I haven't experience any breakage, damage to my real hair or much irritation due to the braids. Now, I will be honest, it can be pretty painful at first when you leave. I personally go home and run hot water thru my braids immediately and use a leave-in conditioner on each braid to slightly loosen the braid. This method isn't recommended by most because it will shorten the lifespan of your braids. However, it breaks them in quicker so I can begin styling them and significantly reduces the irritation to my scalp. I don't mind coming back in 2 weeks for touch ups because my priority is the health and wellness of my real hair. I would rather my braids only last 4 weeks and know that my scalp and real hair hasn't undergone any stress as the goal is to wear a protective style that promotes growth. My review is very mixed.... My hair looks amazing!! It is very neat and each braid looks perfect. I got small box braids at mid back length, it took about 4-5 hours. I had anywhere between 2-4 ppl doing my hair at any given time. Okay those are the positives. When I walked in the shop it had a sour smell to it. I was not greeted or even acknowledged just told to have a seat. Then the owner asked to see a picture of what I wanted which I showed her and then they immediately started on my hair. The entire time they were doing my hair no one said a word to me. When I had about one fourth left to braid the owner pulled one of the two girls off my hair and told them to start braiding her hair. This was not only my first time at Neat Pretty Braids, but also my first time getting any form of braids/twists. I opted for the mid back, small/medium Senegalese twists and I absolutely love them. I booked my appointment online. I was seated as soon as I arrived. There were 4 ladies who worked on my hair, so that helped shorten the time tremendously. I got exactly what I wanted. They make sure you get exactly what you ask for. I opted to leave my edges (baby hair) out and asked for medium tension. I do not feel as though my hair was pulled tightly at all (which is exactly what I wanted). Every person who was in the salon while I was there walked out with beautiful hairstyles that suited them perfectly. I had my hair braided here for the first time on December 08,2017. My appointment was for 8:00 AM, due to the little snow on the ground, the traffic was especially challenging this date. I called and spoke to who I believe to be the owner. I apologized immediately speaking with her as I realized I would be late. She stated it was "okay". Shortly after I arrived around 8:28 am. I greeted everyone as I entered ...something I do not usually do as I am from Brooklyn , but moving here you quickly learn the etiquette of " greetings everyone". I asked Kendall where may I place my coat, hat and scarf . She slid a chair over to me. I placed them down. The very next thing out of her mouth surprised me...She asked me who referred me to her and the tone she used was loud and edgy ...I replied " I saw one of my Sorors pictures on your Instagram page, and the style was very nice, I decided to come". She asked me what was my Sorors name. I told her I didn't know her name....as the person was wearing para (only Sorors wear para). She said what do you want today with a hint of aggravation in her voice. I responded " Senegalese Twist , medium , waist length". She asked " what color". I replied " I am unsure I was hoping to see the colors you have to see which may look good against my complexion". She replied " I am getting a bad vibe from you. When people come to my shop you need to know what you want, style, size, color, will it be right for your head, will it be too heavy, I don't have time to look through pictures in a book. You need to know what you want. If my shop was full, we would not have time for you to figure out what you want". I was floored. I felt totally disrespected. It was very rude and demeaning. I have not had braids in many years. I love when I get my braids in Brooklyn as you usually have 3-4 people braiding and they get you in and out quickly!! I selected her salon based upon a Soror and some nice Instagram pictures. I felt like leaving. However, I had to weigh the decision, first I paid a deposit that I was certain would not be refunded. Next I had taken the day off work to have my hair braid . I had to put my uncomfortable feeling aside and get my hair done. Insult to injury is she was so pleasant with all other patrons who entered the salon, even looking at photos with those patrons for hair style ideas. I do not know if someone who looks like me was rude to her or she had a bad experience with that person. This was my very first time in her salon, my very first time period having braids done here in Houston. I researched looking for a good place to go, and her reviews, Soror, and IG pictures is how I selected her salon. Further, I had been liking her Instagram pictures. Other reviews here cite how professional and nice she was to them. My experience was very different. I discussed the cons ...now the pros.... There were 3-4 braiders (much like in NY) doing my hair. Each of them were very nice. My head was not hurting when I got out of the chair . I wanted a bun , but I was too nervous to ask, as I did not want to end up thrown out of her shop. The braids are not perfect as some sizes are small, some of medium and the length is not all the same. Overall, it looks nice. A good job was done!! I had hoped to frequent this shop, as 2018 will be my year of braids, due to multiple traveling excursions planned. I like how transparent her pricing is on the site, I like the subsequent email giving directions and instructions, the braiding crew were very polite. My only suggestion is work on the customer service. I truly do not know what I could have said or done to be treated so poorly by the owner. I have been going to Neat_Pretty Braids for two years. They always seat me at or before my appointment time. They always check with me about the style I want. They always stop a few braids in to make sure I like it. They provide hair for a reasonable cost. They always have at least two braiders working on me at a time. I've never been there longer than 6.5 hours. I have tried every style they offer with the exception of micros and goddess locs. They make sure they don't hurt me and they make sure my hair is as light as possible. My braids are perfect every time. I get compliments on my hair even when it's a month old. I came to them with a TWA and my hair is now shoulder length. I get my hair braided about once a month if I can, I wash it a couple of times a week and I've never had any problems. Got my hair braided here yesterday morning and when I say everyone was so professional and EXTREMELY QUICK! I have very short hair 2/3inches at the top with low sides and they braided my hair so neat and efficiently. They took their time and made sure my hair was perfect. I was expecting to have extreme pain due to the length of my hair, but the pain was very minimal and today I have NO pain when I would normally have pain for at least a week. They didn't snatch all of my sides or anything. Everyone was very friendly and as soon as I got there I went straight to the chair. It started with 2 women in my hair and then 4 was working at one time, all doing different things. I met the owner Kendall and she was very sweet and professional. I felt very comfortable there and will definitely be going back there to get the sides retouched in a few weeks. The work at this shop is exactly what it states, neat and pretty. I got what is called Zoe braids, very small box braids. Yes my hair is very short, but this isn't the first time I've had short hair braided. There were a lot of braids and unfortunately they were too heavy for me to deal with. Plus one of the braiders braided so tight and complained like she resented having to work with my short hair. If you don't want to work with my hair say that and don't take the job (everyone else was nice though). I never had this issue of heaviness before, so I contacted the owner and she let me come in to try and fix the it. The ends were shaved down and it felt like that helped. She also explained that they could remove the middle making some of the braids bigger, and I really didn't want to do that. I tried to see if I could deal with it after that but I couldn't, so I texted her back. Let's just say the conversation didn't go so well. She may be an expert, but I know my hair and what the problem was. I wasn't going to be talked over trying to explain how it was only heavy in the front. The front was cut too short so more hair had to be added to the ends of all the braids in the front to get the desired length. When I would pull the front together in a ponytail that is where the weight came from. I couldn't even wear it up. She was even offended with the fact that I counted my braids. I paid for them so I can do what I like. I wanted to know why it was so heavy and thick and 363 braids is why. She offered for me to come in and fix it, but after the not so great conversation and being talked to like I don't know anything I didn't see the point. Seriously love this place. I've been getting my hair braided here for almost two years, and I have no complaints. Kandell understands what style I want, especially if I've had it before. I can show them a picture, and they make sure it's what I want. There's always three or four braiders on my head, which is awesome. They don't braid my hair too tight, but they always ask to make sure. They've also done my crochet braids if I wanted to try something new. I'd highly recommend this place. read more

I got a couple of braids done here, the girls were very nice. One of my braids was a bit off/crooked, but I'm realizing that it might just be difficult to get it to be prefect just in general, so not a huge deal. You have to pay a $40 non-refundable deposit up front, which is a bit steep to hold an appointment. As far as the service, they worked pretty fast. The owner, Kendall, was a bit rude. She called and asked me to push my appointment up about an hour or 2 before the actual appointment because of personal errands she had to run last minute. (?) I agreed, but she was not even the person who worked on me, so I am not sure why I had to move it up in the first place if someone else was going to do it. No big deal though, just noted. Her tone over the phone and dealing with you in person was not very pleasant. At first, she was very nice, but her personality changed if she got upset at all. She was having a full blown argument with someone over the phone and kept a customer waiting for almost 20 minutes before she could check out, which I thought was very unprofessional. Your customers in the shop should come first in my opinion, not making them feel unimportant like they don't have their own lives to get on with. No regard for time. There is a charge to use a credit card, which is common with independent hair salons. It's her shop though, so she can run it how ever she likes. These braiders do excellent work and the stylists are polite and friendly but the owner is SO rude! The first time I went, the stylist was blow drying my hair before she began braiding. (I was sent an email the night before my appointment telling me I should come with my hair blow dried. I'm natural and don't use heat so I don't even own a blow dryer.) My hair wasn't wet, I guess it just needed to be straighter. The owner told the stylist she should not have blow dried my hair right in front of me and that she should not have serviced me. I chose to ignore her though because I had jumped through a lot of hoops to make this appointment and I was extremely pleased with my hair when it was over. So pleased, that despite her rudeness, I booked another appointment a couple months later. (I made sure to get my hair blow dried this time.) This time, unfortunately, the night before my appointment, I was injured and literally couldn't walk. I called to reschedule my appointment from the emergency room. Me: I have an appointment I need to reschedule. Her: No. We don't do last minute reschedule. Me: So should I just make a new appointment online. Her: yeah. If you want. Well, nah, I don't want. I can't with her rude behavior anymore. I hope I read one day that the stylists who work for her, get their own place. I'll be their best customer. Until then, I'll be getting my hair braided elsewhere. They braid well but I'd rather be somewhere they value their customers. I work hard for my money so appreciation is appreciated! read more

Based on my experience with The owner Kendall I would probably say this is the most unprofessional place of business I've ever experienced in my existence. For the amount of money you spend which often deviates from when book, so please ensure the price is articulated before service begins. I patronized this business three times the braiders are exceptional! The first time I thought I misunderstood and it was a communication issue the second time I thought maybe it's me but when it happened the third time I knew it was her professional ethics or the lack there of. I had my hair braided here for the first time yesterday. I'm very surprised to read the reviews about the owner being rude. That was not my experience at all. She was very nice and very honest about what style/color works for each customer. She received several phone calls from people asking all the questions that she answered on her website and she was patient and nice to all of them. She didn't braid my hair, but my braids are perfect! They are absolutely beautiful. Very neat and all the same size. They also braid all the way down, which I love. The ladies are very busy. People were walking in the door every few minutes. They were all polite. If they weren't talking much, it's probably because they were concentrating on making your braids perfect. read more

What can I say about Neat Pretty Braids...except that's exactly what you get when you go there...Neat Pretty Braids!!! Kendall picked the perfect name for her salon and I'm glad to say that I'm a loyal customer. I've been getting my hair braided by Kendall for almost two years...and not once has her and her crew let me down. You name a braid style...I've had it it or will soon get it:)! I love the fact they are fast, but still have neat Braids. I get nonstop compliments when I leave the shop. Kendall makes sure everyone's hair is up to her standards before you leave the shop. The ladies there are very friendly and will do what makes the customer happy. Kendall also advise customers what will or will not work...so please listen to her. She knows of what she speaks. She takes pride in healthy hair care and will suggest what is best for your hair - even if it's a cheaper style & she's even did my hair longer before because it looked better but charged me the quoted price. The ladies in there are pretty awesome and are always very nice & personally, I don't like when someone is working on my head and talking too much because that always seems to take longer. I have been a client of Neat Pretty Braids for 3 1/2 years. The owner Kendall was the first person to ever do my hair. I love the service it's always like visiting an extended family. Kendall makes sure her clients are happy with their service every-time. Being from up north it's a good feeling to go somewhere in Texas that gets my personality. If you're looking to get your hair laid and keep your edges THIS IS YOUR PLACE!!!! I always get box braids, micro braids mid back and waist length. They are extremely busy on the weekend. So if you want to be in and out the weekdays are the best.. Just got a touch up today and will be back in 8weeks for a new look. What an experience. I am still in disbelief. I went in for a few simple cornrow braids and they were all lopsided and different sizes. They were so lopsided that I (reluctantly) had to ask her to start over halfway through. I guess I made the mistake of trusting they could part hair evenly. The lady kindly redid my hair (if I'm paying for a service, shouldn't look acceptable?), but complained about it to her coworkers in French. Yes, I know French and the whole time they trash talked. The owner is an absolute joke. She argues with people over the phone and is unprofessional on all levels. Professionalism = F Salon Cleanliness = D Overall Experience = F I think this place probably does a better job at the small ghana braids or locs. I am not one to leave bad reviews, but if it will help a person or two to save their money, then why not? read more
