We escaped the Attic!
Megan T.

My partner and I were in the area and happened to pass this place. It was close to their last call time, but we decided to see if they could squeeze us in. Megan was working, and she was a delight. We were able to play the Attic room. Room: the Attic was a bit creepy, with a few good jump scares including loud noises. I like being scared, so it was really fun for me, but might not be someone else's cup of tea. We had some difficulty in the first half, but then found our footing in the second half. It was just me and my partner playing, so maybe we would have gotten puzzles done more easily if we had a few other friends with us. We still got out in time though! Rules: I enjoyed how NC Escape set up their games. Unlike most other escape rooms, there are no time penalties for asking for hints, and you get an unlimited amount of hints. Some may think this is cheating, but how can a game be enjoyable if you're just stuck on the first couple puzzles and ran out of hints? This method of managing the game made it totally fun. We still only had 8 minutes to spare, so while having unlimited hints helped, we certainly didn't use it as a crutch. We will definitely be back to try out their other rooms!

Brewery Heist
Devon S.

My group of 4 did the "Brewery Heist" room, two of our team members have done no previous escape rooms, my girlfriend has done 2 others, and I have done about 20 or so. We escaped with 23 minutes left and used no hints. The NC Escape website rates this room a 7/10 difficulty, I would rate it closer to a 4 or 5. It's unfortunately going to be hard for me to recommend this location based off this room specifically. I am willing to come back to try one of their other rooms on the off chance it is a bigger challenge/more creative, but my experience is that a lot of rooms at the same location are often structured very similarly. The good: -Excellent theming in the beginning room -Some satisfying puzzles -No red herrings -Puzzles all on theme The not so good: -Very straightforward puzzles -Besides the main room, nothing was particularly well themed. Clues stuck out like a sore thumb, in fact almost all objects in each room pertained to a puzzle. -To the same end, clues and the place to input them were almost all directly next to each other. -I audibly sighed upon seeing 4 near identical boxes all with a 5 digit lock on them stacked right on top of each other. -All puzzles minus one or two were nearly identical to each other. Read a clue, solve that clue using just the information on the sheet, input the clue into a 4 or 5 digit combo lock. All-in-all this room didn't do a lot to wow me and my friends. I would recommend it as a good first escape room (my friend's who had never done one even recognized it as pretty basic), as most of the puzzles are very straightforward and don't require you to have a lot of spatial awareness. There was never any confusion about what went where, or any information you got early on that was useful much later, it was just too formulaic and straightforward. It's a "feel good" escape room, if it wasn't alcohol themed I could have seen this one aimed more toward teens. Anyone that has done more than a couple will find this room to be one that doesn't quite "scratch the itch". We overall had a good time, and our GM was kind and helpful, no complaints there! (Always glad to have the option for private booking with just 4 tickets as well, that shouldn't go unstated.)

We did the Attic and there were two jump scares that got a pretty loud scream from my wife.

When it was my turn, the screen printing pro and I chatted about team building events. I grabbed a card and reached out the very next day. After explaining what I had in mind (a workshop for my running group so that we could print some t-shirts), I was handed over to Lenny at Hey Monkey! Lenny was so easy to work with. He understood that organizing these things is akin to herding cats, so he set everything up to be as smooth and painless as possible. And then there was the actual event. It was so much fun! Woo-woo warning: I don't know exactly what was going on, but my group brought some really negative energy into Lenny's studio. Fortunately, Lenny just carried on, kept his upbeat attitude, and (most) everyone had an amazing time! It's been less than a week and I'm pretty sure everyone has worn their shirts at least once. I'm hoping to do it again for the folks I work with!

In fact, with anyone other than Lenny at the helm, I suspect it would have. Lenny was great-calm, cool, and collected. The vibe at his studio is excellent and his teaching style both friendly and approachable. Highly, highly recommended. As a post-script, I saw 4 of the shirts Lenny helped us print in the wild last evening. They looked awesome.

We attended the Summer Vegetarian class. Kate gave a brief intro to what each station entailed, and you could pick one that you wanted to work on. Kate and her assistant would walk around and help as needed, and call everyone over at certain parts to show how things were being prepared or cooked. Most of the food she was as using she had bought at the farmers market. We had some appetizers while finishing up the cooking, and at the end we all sat together in the dining room for a full meal. All of the food was delicious! Kate sends the recipes out via email after the class. I will definitely be trying some of them out at home, and looking to take a class in the future. Don't expect to master any of the recipes during this class, but you will gain some tips and come away with a full belly and some new recipes. You can bring your own beer and wine, and she also provided water and lemonade for us. Our class ran about 30 minutes over, so depending on how many dishes she has planned be prepared for class to go a little longer.

Classes are out of her home in a residential area, so follow the directions she sends you. She had done most of the prep work, showed us each recipe, and then let all of the participants wash their hands and get to work. Everyone wore a mask, and outdoor seating was available for anyone not comfortable dining indoors just. We got to rotate through various stations and Katie did some of the more intensive cooking, like the deep frying. She was very helpful with tips and checking to see how everyone was doing. After everything was cooked, we sat down to eat. Boy, there was a lot, and everything was delicious! We made gnocchi, pierogies, momos, potstickers, samosas, and apple dumplings. Water was provided and you can BYOB if you like. It did take a little bit longer than scheduled but not too much so. She followed up a few days later by emailing the recipes to us. A great experience for foodies!

I didn't know there were places that offered private facilities to have cooking classes, or maybe I just never sought it out. At any event, this was all arranged by management. My colleagues and I came here to cook, and walked away gaining new skills in the kitchen. We were divided up in teams, to make different dishes. Each team were given an ingredient list and instructions, which were helpful. We were so grateful that this event didn't require making random dishes from a surprise ingredient, like a Gordon Ramsey show. Whew. Honestly we'd be doomed if that were the case. The instructors walked us through each teams worries. We had about 5 teams, each in charge of: rice, meat dish, pizza, dessert, salad and a side. We all learned different techniques and managed to finish on time. It was nice to feel accomplished and enjoy our creations after the hour or so of insecurity. Whats funny is that my colleagues act so so tough in corporate meetings, but for the ones who don't cook, it was fascinating to see them in a vulnerable cooking environment. For the ones who do cook, you got to see them be even more pompous than in the board room, ha! Overall, it was an excellent experience. The staff were absolutely wonderful, the venue was beautiful, it was a hidden tucked away farmhouse-ish place in Chapel Hill. It was probably pricey, our VP paid for it, but nevertheless worth every penny. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to go outside of their comfort zone, learn new skills and partake in some delicious food!

Finally this past summer he was able to attend one of the camps. After all that time and build up all I can say is... Meh. It's not really a cooking school for kids, but if you have 8 or 9 yos that need something to do and you want them to stir a bowl or pretend they are cooking for twice the price of other summer camps, then this will suffice. They don't provide any of the recipes to the kids to take home with them, individual kids only learn how to "cook" 1 of the 4 items they prepare each day. No actual cooking skills are taught. Head chef proved why chefs have a reputation for being unpleasant to deal with. I would not recommend. Since we were again not able to enroll our child last summer we hired a local chef to give a 4-day cooking class to our son at home, ended up being cheaper and he learned a whole lot more. Recipes, knife skills, prep work, flavor pairings... All the things that CSB are not.
