There are times when I read my fellow Yelper reviews and all I can think is....what? Were we in the same place? This was one of those rare occasions. The Reverend Dr. Steak and I spent many years living in Tidewater during his military career. We have amazing friends there still and love to go down periodically to enjoy some good laughs, good food and overall slower, more relaxed pace of life. This time with two kids we thought, hey, why not see if one of the Navy Lodges are open? Oceanfront in the off-season is cool but not as inexpensive as you'd think given all the taxes. Lo and behold, we scored a 'family suite' at the Navy Lodge at Little Creek. Cool. As they are on-base military accommodations, there are no taxes, what they quote is what you pay. I admit I read others' reviews and felt a little uncertain that this was a wise choice, I have come to trust the Yelp community and we have had great experiences thanks to this place. We figured, what the hey, if it's as bad as they say we'll just check out early and go find another hotel - not hard in the off-season. I'm glad we went. Because this hotel, it was beautiful. Clean. Comfortable. Surprisingly quiet given its' size. Our family suite was quite nice, with two bedrooms, each flanking the living room/kitchen area, and each bedroom with it's own en suite bath. Yay! No sharing baths, or even walls, with the kids! The kitchen area was well appointed and beautifully done with granite countertops, tile backslash and under-counter lighting. The living room area was not huge, and I think if we were actually PCS'ing it might get a wee bit cramped, however for a long weekend it was quite fine. The Lodge offers a continental breakfast that is exactly the same as every other hotel continental breakfast. Waffle griddles, breads and muffins, oatmeal, boiled eggs, cereal, milk, juice, coffee. Staff were pleasant and accommodating. It is seriously very close to the NEX and Commissary, we just walked across the parking lot to shop. More time to drive over than walk over. That was also great for those things you forget to pack and also snacks for the teens. Guests can use the base pools (outdoor) and the fitness center nearby - neither are on-site. If I were a betting gal, I'd say that this hotel is managed under contract by the same company that manages Holiday Inns - the decor was very familiar in that way. Those wishing to stay must have base privileges, either military or federal government. You can sure bet that the next time we are heading down there, we will book here again.

We usually stay at the lodge in Norfolk but since they were booked we managed to get a room here. I like this lodge way more than Norfolks! I think it's all one floor (it seemed to go on forever). The base this lodge is on is great when traveling with kids as there is a bowling alley/water park/ movie theater/ and playgrounds all over. I gave this lodge 4 stars since the included breakfast was pretty pathetic compared to other lodges. It was a paper bag with a bottle of water and double pack of hard boiled eggs. Also, there was a pretty intricate web at the bottom of our window sill so we could tell they didn't dust in awhile but the rest of the room seemed clean.

I agree with some of the other reviewers in that previous reviews are most likely before the remodel. The Navy Lodge was remodeled a couple of years ago, so things are different. For about $70 you can't complain. You have great access to the Navy Exchange and Commissary and you get free breakfast. The staff here was great and overall a pleasant stay. Definitely like that it is close to everything in Hampton Roads you want to see. Only issue I had was that the pillows were soft, but everyone has their preference.

Nice large kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, dishwasher, and dishes.

I visited during off-peak season so noise and traffic wasn't too big of an issue at the hotel. I wouldn't want to stay here during the busier times in the summer. I loved how much ocean soundscapes I could hear from the 5th floor balcony. The view was beautiful and the room felt quiet. Something I super appreciated. The only gripes I had was the mandatory valet parking and the extremely low shower pressure. The sink had drainage issues too. I also ran out of towels during my overnight stay. There's no suite, dresser, or closet in the room either. So think short-term stays. I still wouldn't mind returning again in the future and wouldn't hesitate recommending the place to anyone thinking of visiting. The downstairs lobby has breakfast spot as well as a bar and coffee shop. The concierge was friendly and very accommodating. Shoutout to Alexander for making sure everything was set up just right for my visit. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!

Overall, we had a wonderful three night stay at the Moxy Oceanfront. We selected this spot because…read moreit was dog-friendly and relatively cheaper (with decent reviews) compared to other pet-friendly hotels on the boardwalk. Our three-night stay in March, which was booked in November, was about $250 per night. Although there was a half marathon happening in the area, I think our rate (booked through a 3rd party) was on the lower end because March is still considered the off season. The hotel itself is quite modern compared to the other more dated hotels in the area. It definitely is geared to younger crowd (20s-30s) because of design, layout, the amount of video games, the bar with snazzy cocktails, and of course an indoor slide that goes from the 2nd to the 1st floor. For our purposes, I thought our room was fine for two adults and a dog. Compared to other places I have stayed, the room was a bit small. However, we're the type of people who only use the room for sleeping so not having a huge amount of space is not a deal breaker for us. Although our room had a partial ocean view (on the south side of the building), the view was still impressive. My spouse did have a minor complaint in that the rooms did not have a dresser or a closet, but the room has plenty of hooks/hangers where you can hang your things along the walls. Although the hotel is not in the "central" area of the boardwalk (around 21st street), it is still located in a nice section of the boardwalk that is walking distance to a wide array of restaurants, bars and other attractions. For example, the hotel is next door to the Wildfowl Museum. ;) Valet is about 11 bucks per night. In general, there were no major issues with valet services. Unfortunately, there was a minor issue in that the hotel overbooked valet parking due to an event it was hosting. However, that situation did not affect us too much with the exception of a slightly longer than normal wait. Everyone on the staff with whom I interacted were friendly and very professional. Also, I thought the cleaning crew did a great job with maintaining the hotel. Although the hotel is pet-friendly, I did not smell old/wet dog/cat odors in the common areas or hallways. If we decided to stay on the Oceanfront, we definitely will keep the Moxy in consideration.

Not sure if it's just a thing if the past or something new but it would be helpful if guests could have access to religious materials. I had an overall great stay at Navy Lodge Oceana…read more The staff here can be incredibly accommodating and willing to offer help. The housekeeping staff does a meticulous job cleaning each room after the guests leaves. Throughout our nearly 6 months stay, Jerome and Herbert in particular have really gone out of their way to keep our stay here feel like home. For example, when our A/C unit failed in the middle of murky summer, Jerome replaced the entire unit right away. I have also had trouble handling the incredible humidity I've not experienced since leaving Japan. But thank goodness for Jerome again --he ensured I had a really good dehumidifier that also helped muffle noises as well. I cannot emphasize enough on what a truly instrumental role he had played in keeping my whole family feel comfortable. I find that especially noteworthy because we were there for quite awhile. The Lodge location is steps away from the Dam Neck Naval Base Beach and the sunrise is beautiful. It also has a kitchenette that is fully functional to cook a good meal unless you need an oven. The fridge is big enough to put in whatever you need and the stove is easy to cleanup. The cabinets are stuffed with everything you'd find in a kitchen. Cooking utensils, pots, pans, plates, cups, wine openers, wine glass, dish rack, soap and sponge. You name it, they have it. And this is what really makes the stay better than being over at the Navy Gateway Inns and Suites (NGIS) if you are here for awhile-- especially if you are like me and prefer to cook your own meals, staying at the Lodge is a MUST. And if you have pets, the Lodge is also AN ABSOLUTE must. One of the great things about Navy Lodge Oceana is how pet friendly it is. Our two beagles loved the area and there are 3 receptacles on-site to keep doggie poo thrown out. Keep in mind that it is a high tick and flea area so ensuring they get brushed after a walk is a must! Well, not unless you like to shriek like me when I found two ticks on my laptop thanks to my dog ubering them inside. And just for the record, both dogs also take Nexgard and Heartgard monthly. Now the NGIS might work beautifully for those who are in the Dam Neck /Oceana area for short term stay, or ok with eating takeouts every day because you don't cook, and /or doesn't have pets. Or that they'd prefer the nicer furniture or less noise to deal with. I've stayed at both and NGIS is far easier to make reservations for leisure and their beds are very comfortable. In sum, I had a fantastic stay and I look forward to returning every chances I get. For $75/night, the rates are exceptional and the location is perfect. I wouldn't hesitate recommending it to everyone. -- Cons: Elevator--The building has no elevator. So if you have loads of luggages, you will need to take it to your room upstairs using the staircase. Reservation --Making reservation here can be pretty easy if you are staying because of TAD/TDA/PCS orders. For leisure traveling, you'd have better luck at the NGIS or other nearby civilian operated hotels. The leisure travel can be only made 7 days ahead of the stay. And chances are, you are 99% likely to be told they have nothing for vacancies, or they have something for just 1 day out of a 7 day trip or something very inconvenient. WiFi--The WiFi here can be spotty, nonexistent, or extremely slow. If there's someone playing video games in the evening, you can tell right away and you have a bad night ahead of you if you need the Internet. It'd be far less frustrating to get Internet connection elsewhere. Also, the cellphone data connection here is also rather lousy. So no, using data won't help with watching YouTube or something else. If you need to make a call, you'd also have better luck by going outside. You'll see bunches of other sailors or marines pacing and walking around sometimes for the same reason. Noise level--You can hear just about everything from your surroundings. Toilet flushing, heart stopping door slams, other dogs barking all day, people's conversations and/or TV sounds all hours of day, jets, gunshots from the swamp side, housekeepers cleaning , anything in the hallway, etc. Privacy Please sign on the door doesn't mean much either. So if your next door guest has his alarm go off at 0500 and well into 0800, nobody can or will do anything about it. Well, not unless Herbert is working in the morning. He was the only person who was willing to intervene after multiple other lobby staff refused to help. Try imagining the alarms making a loud incessant beeping the entire time behind your headboard at 0500 on a Sunday for 3+ hours while the other guest somehow sleep through it or not even be there over the weekend! My point is, if you are sensitive to noise stimuli, or dislike wearing ear plugs, I don't recommend staying here.
