This has been our go to hotel for vacation the past 3 years. We keep coming back here because of the friendly staff, clean rooms and price. I want to give a special mention to Vicky who works here. She is so friendly, accommodating and great to talk to. She will go out of her way to help you with anything you need. I recommend this hotel to everyone. I do wish that the rooms with the double beds had a couch or something but the other pros outweigh that. Stay here and you won't regret it. read more

Not fancy, not a dump...just a great little middle of the road kind of place to enjoy the vibe of VA Beach. The staff was super friendly, our room was clean, the shower pressure was perfect, beds were comfy. We were there after Labor Day, the crowds were down. The turnover this time of year is not so chaotic, so we were able to check in a little earlier than 4:00p and we were given a later checkout, at 11:30, instead of 11. The hotel does not have a restaurant, however, there is a small one attached that serves a nice breakfast and lunch, with easy prices! In the lobby, there is a cappuccino/espresso machine with several choices and flavors. Also, there's a filtered water station to fill/refill your bottle. The location is excellent if you like to be in the middle of everything. Disliked · My pillows were "bouncy" I know pillows are a personal thing...they weren't horrible, but they didn't suit me. Of course, I made them work, but if you like squishy and flattish, these pillows don't squish and stay squished, they just pop right back into a bouncy state. *I never rate according to pillows, I just like to mention them because I know a lot of "pillow snobs". read more

The inside was ok with small issues like the bathtub having disbonded sealant and being pulled away from the wall just superficial things. The real issue came when we decided to use the 1 amenity they provide (the pool). As soon as we got to the pool all you could smell was weed because the door was wide open and people were smoking it on the patio. The people from the little restaurant/bar asked them to leave no big deal, but once the smell cleared we came to the realization that the pool wasn't even clean (it was filthy) and spent the night in our room. read more

Only one elevator in the hotel that went out every hour. We stayed their for an entire week and it went out everyday. The day before we checked out the elevator broke again and they didn't even bother to fix it. My family and I had to carry canopies, coolers ,beach chairs, food , suitcases etc down 6 flights ot stairs not to mention having to do the same thing each day we went down to the beach. It was a horrible experience. The hotel promised to reimburse us a small amount of the $1500.00 we spent which they never honored or even tried to do anything for the patrons of the hotel effected by the constant elevator outages. Super amazing staff! So very friendly! My husband and I had got to the VB area a little earlier than expected and wanted to be able to walk around as we knew it was before check in time. I had asked the front desk if we could have a parking pass even though we couldn't check in yet and she was SO helpful! Even checked on the room status so we knew when we could check in! The rooms have a GORGEOUS view of the ocean and the rooms are very clean, well kept, and have great amenities. Can not wait to come back here and stay again! read more

This hotel is extremely outdated. The amount of things that need upgrading is ridiculous. The telephone in the room has black grime on it that does not wipe off. The toilet seat looks like the original from when the hotel was built. Taking a squat for two days as a lady is not ideal when your spending hard earned money to stay in a hotel. Bathroom smells like urine and when you turn on the AC unit all you smell is flowery roses like they are trying to cover up. Talk about a headache! Toiletries are bare to none. Parking is awful. Only have very limited spaces in front of hotel. Have to park across the street behind two buildings and then it can be a very sketchy walk to the hotel at night. Save your money and stay at a Hilton or a Marriott! Staff was nice when spoken to and restaurant in lobby area had good breakfast. read more

My family and I made reservation to stay at The Capes in Virginia Beach 1-2-2025 thru 1-4-2025. We ended up arriving a day early, we looked online and it showed availability for the night before that we did not have a reservation. When we arrived, we asked if they had any rooms available, she stated only one and it was a family room. We said we would take it. One she asked for an ID and Credit card she handed it back and stated that her supervisor texted and said they have no availability. The parking lot was empty! We went next door to Coastal; they had a rooms available. Went back to The Capes the next day to check-in, got to the room and the bed was the worst thing I have ever slept on, it was like a mattress from the 70's, worn out and springs bulging. They have metal frames that make noise every time you move on the beds. Could not swim in the swimming pool due to the fact that there is a gas leak that makes you gag every time you walked in the pool room. There is a restaurant attached- Sea Salt Grill, great food however the gas smell from the pool area lingered in, made for an uncomfortable meal. If you are planning to stay at The Capes, I would most defiantly stay away. read more

That part of Virginia is in Phase 2 of the Governor's plan to reopen the state. { For us in NoVA, we have to wait. } As part of the plan, face masks are either required in all public places or at least highly recommended. If you are coming to this hotel in early summer, be aware that NOT ONE of the staff at the reception desk was wearing a mask. NOT ONE of the rest of the staff was wearing a mask. Of course, they suspended room service, and the pool remains closed; maybe because these are not profit centers. Other than that, the staff was friendly, the rooms clean, and the rates reasonable. this place literally sucked. it was disgusting. not clean, terrible food, sketchy. for the price we payed it was horrible. the showers were super nasty. it was dirty, people were smoking. we payed 200$ and i wouldve payed 20. please dont come here if you have any expectations. the pool is not like it advertizes, it can fit max 4 adults. its tiny and SUPER over chlorienated. everything is rusted, there are holes everywhere, and i mean everywhere. the walls, couchs, beds. the beds dont stay on the platforms and made noises throughout the night. it reeks of weed, people smoke despite the signs and they dont do anything about it. the wifi sucks, it goes in and out. i know its not the hotels fault, but on the boardwalk theres screaming throughout the night. and jets constantly flying loudly. never coming here agian. the photos and ratings are deciving. 1.3/5. read more

The staff were so great and kind, I also like how at night they lock the doors at 12am and open when you press the intercom button, super safe feature. I just wanted to say that the bathroom was very small. We had to do all the work ourself and when we asked for towels and toilet paper they said we had to come down and get it ourselfs which was unbelievable and especially their was no parking and their was only 2 handicap spots.I'm not even gonna start about the customer service they were so ignorant.if their was no parking left you had to park like 2 blocks away and it was so hot down there and the hotel itself the air condition was bad. Also there were no trash bags and the hallways looked really bad and the only good thing about this place is the view. Anyway if you go here beware you have to do everything yourself. Hotel was misleading with advertisement. Pool was extremely small and if more than 5-6 people in you could not swim. Rooms were outdated bathroom was very small had mold on the tile found pubic hairs in the floor on day of arrival. Bathroom exhaust fan was hanging from the ceiling by wires. We attempted multiple times to contact the front desk for assistance but no one answered the phone. Ended up cleaning myself. Commode ran nonstop my granddaughter used the commode and it clogged. Waited an hour for someone to come help with this u til my husband had to go down to get a plugger to unclog it ourselves. Upon going downstairs found the downstairs commode was also backed up. Chair in room was dangerous with a bent leg. First day of arrival my husband sat down and the chair flipped him out. Between us we can't count of the attempts we called the front desk to ask for assistance and not once. NOT ONCE did the staff answer the phone. I walked down to obtain towels and soap since they do not clean rooms and was met with eye rolls and deep sighs. Leaving the impression they did not have the time to deal with us. The staff was extremely rude. Wore no name tags and only wore blue jeans with tshirts. I would not recommend this place. Upon dealing with the last deep sigh and eye roll when I asked for sugar I complained this led to room key being deactivated and asked to leave. With the comment being made that we were dirty guests. We had 4 people in a small room with no one cleaning. The deck that was shared was weathered badly and had areas that were loose. The tables the 2 on the deck that were supposed to be shared by 4 rooms were not anymore safe than the flooring of the deck. On the day we arrived the only nice young lady that checked us in was talked to horribly by someone with no name tag that had on a capes shirt. Best way to describe her she had bushy brown hair and road into the lobby on a bicycle that was pink she would change in the same room she stored her Bicycle. The door coming back into the pool area from the beach could never be accessed someone had to let people in. This was one of the the worst vacations my family has ever been on and will not ever go back or recommend the capes again. read more

I'm a fan & would not hesitate to book a stay here again. While the hotel is a slightly dated & worn in some minor ways (think furnishings & finishes), it really is an overall appealing beach hotel. No issues with cleanliness & found the housekeeping staff pleasant, helpful & accommodating, as well as the ladies at the front desk. All 59 rooms are oceanfront with large balconies & share 1 elevator. So with that being said, wait time on the elevator can get annoying. For me, I'm more of stairs kind of person so it personally didn't bother me any. Location was perfect. Oceanside the boardwalk was right out front, about a mile north is Neptune Park & heading south is the fishing pier. Cherie's Bike & Blade rentals is immediately next to the hotel & The Hidden Pearl Café, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner & drink specials is located just downstairs. Tons of options for shopping & other eats on the street side along Atlantic Avenue as well. There's free WiFi, complimentary coffee in the sitting lounge & an indoor heated pool. The pool is small & has a maximum capacity of 15 persons. Suggest bringing your own pool towels, as they are not provided. Coffee makers are in each room, but filters & coffee are given by request at the front desk. There's only 1 parking space given per room & the front lot fills up quickly. However, there's additional parking across the street behind Giovanni's or directly across on the other side of 20th street. These lots are attended 24 hours, so while it seems abandoned & dark at night your car is really is safe. I'll conclude on this, my friend ended up checking out of the hotel & leaving her purse behind. How she managed this is beyond me, but luckily I was still in town & was able to swing by to pick it up... 6 hours later! In those 6 hours I'm unsure of how many hands the purse went through, but she reported to me that all her belongings were contained inside just as she had left them. Not a good place to stay. It's in very bad repair, dated and run down. Vent fan in bathroom falling out of ceiling. Door would not lock without lifting up very hard to make it latch. Furniture falling apart. Dirty and in need of a deep cleaning. Bathtub has rust spots in it. The room Telephone system did not work. So does the fire alarm system work? Very poor parking conditions. Only a few parking places at the hotel otherwise have to park across the street in a dark lot that says "Park at your own risk." I won't be back. read more

I am very grateful to them for doing this for me and my nephew we had come all the way from Colorado to help family and our first reservations were at a hotel that was a very nasty and very high risk dangerous area. This is a pretty good hotel. Not extremely fancy or anything, but it is clean, quiet and the staff is very friendly. The indoor heated pool is clean and nice and they have a little bar/restaurant next to it that was tasty and the service was fast and friendly. Nice oceanfront outdoor seating area too. We would definitely stay here again. The only con we experienced was that you can only park one car per room. To park another car, it is an extra $17 or so. This hotel is located in the center of everything which is great! Its so close to the beach and the view of the beach is gorgeous. The rooms have balconies that you can sit outside and smell the ocean breeze. They have a pool however the pool only fits up to 15 people. They also have a restaurant downstairs which is convenient. A couple of my friends and I stayed at The Capes Hotel this past weekend. Everyone who works in this hotel is sooo friendly! Our room was on the 8th floor, and all of their rooms are beachfront. The room itself was spacious and you get a full counter with a microwave, and a fridge. The beds were comfortable, and unlike when I have been on the top floor at other hotels, the water pressure in the shower was perfect! The people at the front desk were very helpful in suggesting great places to eat and things to do in the area. The location of the hotel is perfect for easy walking to dining, shopping and of course the beach! All and all, next time we go to Virginia Beach we will certainly be staying at The Capes Hotel again. The price is very reasonable too! read more

Stacy (apparently some type of manager, assistant manager and even owner according to the poorly-trained staff at the front desk) at The Capes was incredibly unaccommodating upon our attempted stay. We tried using booking.com (like much of modern America) and upon arrival for check in, the unfortunate error was recognized that they were not a pet-friendly stay. When we went to cancel our stay with The Capes, Stacy remained aggressive and argumentative with me as the customer and unsympathetic or understanding to the situation we were in as guests. After several condescending remarks about what she would have done in my situation as the customer (not what she could do to help remedy my situation as a customer service representative) she said there was nothing she could do to help. Her demeanor was embarrassingly unprofessional. As someone that has worked with the public for years, and actually knows how to act with manners toward other adult human beings, I can say I wouldn't risk hiring Stacy for my own business or be her coworker in any customer service capacity for the reasonable fear that she would somehow find a way to adversely affect my business or reputation in customer service with her childish behavior. I will never be a customer of The Cape resort even if I travel without a pet and I will also discourage anyone I know traveling to Virginia Beach from doing the same. The Cape resort essentially robbed me of $300 while pretending there was nothing they could do to help (turns out they were 100% in charge of our refund after booking.com realized their mistake and they refused to refund us the second we walked out of the door). It's not as much about the money as it is the principle that a mistake was made out of our control and the Cape Hotel and resort acted out of poor business ethics. Don't waste your time or money at this dump. read more

This is without a doubt the worst customer service we have ever received in a hotel. We went to VA Beach after 32 years to celebrate a very special time. Checked into The Capes and after the treatment we received from the front clerk person who checked us in we decided it would definitely be our last trip there. We had reserved a room which had a jacuzzi tub in the room. After we got checked in went to the room found that the jacuzzi wasn't working properly with only half of the jets working. Due to the room being very expensive we went down tot he desk and asked very politely if the possibly had another room of the same we could switch too. The clerk said she had to come to the room and physically see it and then she would see what she could do. Approximately 30 minutes later she knocked on the door and walked away. She returns in 10 minutes never entering informing us since we were not happy with the room they were just going to refund our money to come to the desk and she would take care of it. We went to the desk to ask her what was going on it wasn't that serious. She explained she didn't have another one of those rooms and couldn't provide us with other accommodations. We explained we didn't expect that and we were staying. We headed out the door to go to dinner and she chased us down the street yelling. She then told us we needed to leave and she was going to have her manager refund our card the next day. I explained I was not leaving until I had a credit to my credit card. She didn't know how so she called someone who walked her through it on the phone. We have never in our lives been treated this way She was rude, way out of line and had very erratic unexpected behavior. We were in total shock. We collected our things from the room and proceeded to find a real hotel room It was a nightmare. Don't go there I wish I had read the reviews before I made reservations. read more

Big disappointment / bed bugs ... My husband and I have recently stayed in the Capes hotel, and we are not going to come back ever. Even though we used to stay in the Capes every summer for approximately past 6-7 years. The reason we kept coming back to this hotel was that the staff was very friendly, plus the hotel has a perfect location and reasonable prices for the rooms. However over years something started to change and not in a good way. Most of familiar faces disappeared, and housekeeping started doing a much worse job (during this visit our bathtub wasn't clean, especially hot tub, carpet smelled, the towels were old, and on top of that we discovered bad bugs in our bed!) We usually lower our expectations, knowing that hotel is old and prices are reasonable, and the main reason that we always go to Virginia Beach is the beach itself, and we never really care much how fancy hotel is. This year we decided to celebrate my birthday at the beach. We booked our room in advance calling to hotel and asking for specific range of rooms. The room we had was 804 and it has very nice view on the ocean. That was only one positive aspect of the room. When we discovered bed bugs and reported the situation to front desk, there was absolutely zero emergency to handle it. We requested to see a manager, but he/she wasn't available. In fact, we never got an opportunity to talk to the manager at all. Instead, front desk clerk just asked us if we are going to leave the hotel without offering any other solution. We did not want waste our vacation trying find another place to stay on such a short notice. So when we said that we want to stay, she offered us to transfer to another room that did not have a same view. When I told her that we don't like that room, the lady at front desk became very arrogant and was pretty rude, her voice and body language spoken louder than her words. Finally she gave us a better room, but it was still not the room we expected. When we moved there, the bathroom was not clean, somebody's hair was in the tab. And even if overall the room was ok (for the lowered expectations), there were ants everywhere and there was a fly nest on a balcony(!). My husband asked to see a manager several times, but we never received any response. Also, apparently the staff didn't think that bad bugs in hotel is an emergency, and did not seem to share this information even with the housekeeper, because we saw that housekeeper went to our old room and started making the bed like nothing happened! I am very disappointed at the way they handled this whole situation, and I still wonder if staff has ever made any effort to get rid of the bed bugs. Not to mention that our bodies are now covered with bug bites, and we had to sanitize all of our clothes at home. Another note - they seem to not have any proper communication among the staff, because while we were trying to sort out our situation, we had to speak to the front desk person - and each time there would be a new person without any knowledge of bed bugs, even though we've reported it multiple times. read more

My family and I have stayed at The Capes twice now and feel lucky to have finally found our place in Virginia Beach. We have traveled to the beach for many years jumping from hotel to hotel and never seemed to find our place. After many years of walking and driving past a small nondescript hotel in the middle area of the beach for many years which always seemed to be busy we decided give it a try. We could not be any happier. The last two summers The Capes has been our Virginia Beach home away from home. It's nothing super fancy but the rooms are really clean and well appointed. You get a fridge, microwave, nice counter with sink for food prep, small bathroom, comfortable beds, wifi, and an excellent Oceanfront balcony. The rooms are a good size and have always been quiet. You don't hear your neighbors all night long. They also have a small indoor pool and a small cafe which serves a great breakfast. Best of all the staff is super nice. Everyone we have encountered has always been friendly and helpful. Parking is convenient they have a small lot in front and a big lot on the side and extra parking across the street. The majority of time we are fortunate enough to park right up front. We can't wait for our 2017 summer trip to the beach at The Capes. read more

This was our third annual visit to this property. I have left glowing reviews for each of those prior on TripAdvisor. This review will be quite the contrary as things have either gone seriously downhill, or maybe our visit was just a bad weekend by the incompetent staff. I'll never know because I will never return to The Capes again. Ever. Upon checking in, I immediately noticed the staff had changed from prior years. The woman who checked us in (tall, with the meth-teeth) proceeded to tell us how much she hates the city, but she does like to steal the little ashtrays and other things from the property. All I could think was, "What has happened to this place?" I had a bad feeling... Going in the room. We found an opened sleeve of Ritz crackers (6 were left) in the vanity area, and a wash cloth with something dark on it crumpled on the sink counter. Then the bed linens were somewhat ruffled. Now I had a really bad feeling. Fortunately, my Sweetheart is much more forgiving and we "cautiously" settled in. But I did state, "I'm not touching s*** in this place!" The 4th Floor! We were sentenced to stay in room 405. Right next to the housekeeping and laundry room, with the entire north wall running along the corridor with which they have their morning jamboree. In the early morning you can expect the housekeeping crew to behave raucously and communicate by shouting to each other down the halls for an hour or two. And if you try to get around them and their precious carts you will be cursed at in spanish, which I'm guessing is the universal FU. But after that finally ends, (after they push you out of the way with their carts and load onto the elevator...) you can look forward to laundry boy blasting his stereo and television for about 10 hours. The heat and humidity, the constant sound of washers and dryers, the blasting of music and old tv reruns is exactly what I'd hoped for when booking our vacation there. Laundry boy leaves at 7:30pm so you should probably find an anger management support group there at the beach who understands experiencing horrible customer service until then. But then you get to experience the "staff." They simply do not care. About anything related to guests. I don't know what happened to the former manager, who was the nicest guy in the world. Now they have a Yankee Bully who equates management with harassing and intimidating people. Dressed in black, with a horrible blond dye-job, Stacy, seems to think getting in guests' faces over some self-perceived broken rule is worthy of confrontation. (The laundry/HK staff notwithstanding.) Don't ask her or anyone else to tell Laundry Boy to pipe down - you will receive their collective wrath at the mere mention of such. The "hot tub" in the room. Yeah. Hilarious. Gross. Unlit. And had something growing along the sides of it. "Hey, let's fill a gross tub with hot water, in the dank shadows of the uncleansed corner of a room!! When we arrived back at the property after attending the Oceana NAS Air Show with The Blue Angels - we pulled into the parking lot and was immediately angrily confronted by manager Stacy. She demanded, "Can I help you!!" I replied, "No, we're fine." She then demanded we park somewhere else because the car in the adjacent spot didn't want the bother of an adjacent vehicle. We were driving a compact hatchback and the Chevy Tahoo two spaces up didn't seem to bother her. I parked the car in that spot and this seemed to anger the beast-manager. Sheesh. This idiot can't get out of her own way. The loyalty factor is what's in play here. I loved that place. And now I'm gone. Walk out onto the beach and look north and south. Do you see all those buildings? They are fighting for my business. The Capes had it, forever. And they lost it. I never even looked at another hotel before booking at The Capes. And now I'm back in play. That's some management you have, Capes. One last thing of note. I asked for information from various staff members about how to contact the owners of the property. All refused. After I got home I called at various times of day and night requesting the same information. All refused. Very telling. **A second last thing. After checking out and expressing our displeasure with our stay and being summarily dismissed by the unconcerned staff, The Beast-Manager came out to the parking to mocking wave good bye to us and laughing as she went back in the door. That's sociopathic behavior. I'm just glad I'm fortunate enough not to be one of the poor souls in her life. I am loyal to a fault to people, places and eats. In three short days, Stacy managed to destroy any desire to return to the place I used to love. Nicely done. read more

I have been coming to the Capes for years now. It is the only place in Virginia Beach I will stay. If they are booked, I change my travel plans! The room, the windows, the balcony furniture, EVERYTHING is as clean or cleaner than my home! The staff remembers you when you call for reservations, the housekeeping, front desk and the manager is like family and they all treat you likewise!! I truly enjoy my visits to the Capes and I will always stay here and only here!! read more

I have never encountered so many unprofessional individuals in one location. I pulled into the parking lot and called my friend, a registered guest at the hotel, for a parking pass. I was accosted by a rude woman demanding to see my pass. She never allowed me to get a word in about how my pass was on its way at the moment before she left and grabbed the officer on duty. He came to my car and told me I needed to move or he would arrest me. At this point I'm confused and attempt to tell him that I have a pass coming to me. He tells me to shut up and I'm not allowed to have a pass because the rude woman told him I swore at her which I certainly did not. After securing parking elsewhere I was told I was not allowed to enter the hotel at all. My friends from out of town were upset that I couldn't briefly visit with them and I think the entire thing was ridiculous. Needless to say none of us will be recommending this hotel to anyone. read more
