Their kayaking equipment is all first class and easy for any skill level to handle. Our guide, Matt, was terrific. Absolutely loved our two hour kayak trip with our tour guide, Ethan. He was friendly and knowledgeable about the waters, wildlife (birds) and kayaking itself. It was the perfect day to be out on the water. There was a current heading out so it made it a nice arm workout. On the way back, it was almost like a lazy river as it brought us back. Booked a kayak tour with Nature Adventures, expecting a chill paddle--ended up face-to-face with *dolphins*. Real, wild, "Flipper's distant cousins" kind of dolphins, just cruising by like we were part of the pod. The guides were awesome--laid-back but knew their stuff, and they didn't rush us. Gave us room to soak it all in (and yell "HOLY HELL, DOLPHINS!" a few times). The water was calm, the views were killer, and the whole trip felt like something out of a Nat Geo special--minus the narrator and plus a few bad paddle jokes. If you're even thinking about it, do it. This isn't just kayaking--it's a front-row seat to the wild. And yeah, it was badass. read more

This is my go to kayak rental spot on Shem creek! The staff are friendly and the process of renting a kayak is very easy. You can either reserve ahead of time or do walk in rentals. They have tours as well. Prior to getting you set up in the kayak, there is a safety demonstration and a chance for a staff member to answer any questions you might have. I'd highly recommend renting a kayak to go to crab bank island between mid Oct-mid March. For parking there is some free spots in front of the shop that fill up pretty fast otherwise there's parking you can pay for. read more

If you want to truly see Shem Creek, this is one of the best ways to do it. Being adventurous, my wife and I used Nature Adventures as a kayak outfitter while we had some friends visiting from out of town. We called in advance and were able to book a two hour slot right at what they consider their Happy Hour, which was the perfect time of day for us to catch some of the sunset and explore without the heat of the day. On arrival we were quickly greeted and signed in. We were helped with personal flotation devices (life jackets), handed paddles, and briefed on some key safety concerns we might encounter during our paddling trip. I was excited to have a a clean kayak to jump in and one of their staff members helped to launch us into the creek. Overall we had a great experience with NA due to their friendliness and willingness to help. Most excitingly, we were able to see more of Shem Creek and a feeder creek than I have ever seen before. Travel Tip: It's a whole different experience to see Shem Creek from the water level. If you're able to kayak, I would definitely recommend giving it a try on your own or going on one of their guided tours. Enjoy! read more

Easy online reservation, easy going, and friendly staff. On our way down to Shem Creek, there was really bad weather, thunder, lightning, massive rain. The staff called me to talk about options and to go over what the plan was, we arrived unknowing what we were going to do, luckily the weather cooperated and cleared up and we were able to head out on the water. While visiting from Massachusetts, we wanted to do all the "touristy stuff" while in town for a couple days. This guided tour could not have been any better, I mean, other than just hiring the guide for the entire day to show us around. Josh, a college student who is studying Marine Biology and History, took a small group of us out on Schem Creek for a two hour guided tour. Josh was everything you'd hope for in a tour guide. Knowledgeable, fun facts, historical, engaging, correctly timed pauses to allow reflection, ask questions, etc and considerate of his clients ages, skill level, to name a few. For reference, we attended several other guided tours in Charleston that day and while each had their own unique deliverance, Josh was the most genuine, unscripted, and invested guide one could ask for as an employer and as a paying guest. In terms of the tour, schem creek was awesome! We had a dolphin surface right next to our kayak, saw a ton of wildlife, learned so many fascinating things about Charleston and relaxed while doing it. We rented kayaks from here and had a really fun time! We saw a few dolphins up close and were able to kayak up Shem Creek. It was an overcast day with some light rain which was actually really nice when you're putting in a lot of energy kayaking. All of the employees were super friendly and helpful. The kayak tour in Shem Creek was absolutely wonderful. This is in a very vibrant area with lots of people going in and out on their boats, kayaks, paddle boards, even a floating tiki bar, how cool! It is great for spotting wildlife. Our tour guide Steve did a great job identifying all the different kinds of birds we were seeing, but the most impressive part was the history lesson we got! Steve gave us a very detailed background of Charleston early history and some pirate stories. Who doesn't love a fun pirate story! This is definitely good for beginner kayakers; it does not require that much skill or physical fitness. I had a blast and highly recommend. read more

I've lived here nearly my whole life and had no idea there are MANATEES in Shem Creek! Renting a kayak ($3 off for being a local) and paddling down Shem Creek to watch 4 manatees playing was one of the best things I've ever done! Then my date and I went out into the harbor to explore. On our way back, we saw dolphins and listened to a little live music coming from Red's. The service was friendly and we got a good mini lesson before getting on the water. We purchased the 2-hour guided kayak tour. The weather and scenery were perfect. The guide was nice and laid back but didn't allow our group (us 2, another couple and 3 ladies) to venture up any of the marshy creeks. He said we would as we passed them, but on our return back up Shem Creek, when asked about it he said "no, I don't think so". The water was calm with little current, the levels were good and navigable and the winds were low. No reason given even though we all asked about exploring the marsh. Nice trip but we just all hoped for and expected a little more. Next time we will skip the guide and explore on our own. read more

I called late on a Thursday looking to book a tour for Friday. I didn't leave a message, but they called me back the next morning and squeezed me into their 10am tour. I am so glad that they called and were able to squeeze me in. We did a 2-hour tour at low tide, so we got to see more birds sunning themselves. We also saw a dolphin, and a lot of jumping fish. Our guide, Jim, was very knowledgeable and entertaining. It was a very "gentle" paddle and would be easy for someone new to kayaking, but the guide and scenery would make it enjoyable for a more experienced paddler. I love walking around the boardwalk at Shem Creek, and all of the scenery there, so I loved experiencing the area this way. It was definitely a highlight of my trip to Charleston, and something I look forward to doing again, but next time it will be a sunset tour, and maybe a longer tour, too! read more

The knowledge the staff has amazing. Our guide Matt the knowledge he had he must have a degree in marine biology. He knew all the bird but pointed out little crabs and explained that the male have 1 large claw using it for the mating. It was only on our way back did the dolphins appear we saw one by the outer bank area we were at and two in the inlet. We sat for a good 20 minutes watching as they fed on what was thrown off from the fishing boats. read more

My partner and I went on the sunset and dolphin kayak tour. Graham, Christian, and Steve helped get us all in the water while providing us with an upbeat atmosphere and some fun banter amongst themselves. Steve took us out into the Harbour and gave us historical information on Charleston and told us which birds where flying over head. We took a great 2 hour tour up Shem Creek and out into the harbor. The amount of time was about right for us. Our guide was fantastic -- a marine bioligist, he pointed out and educated us on all sorts of wildlife, including dolphins(!) and lots and lots of birds, each with their own story about habitat, life cycle, characteristics and more. Maybe all guides aren't like this, but he was terrific (though at times he was talking so fast that the entire group had difficulty hearing -- I guess there were about 10 of us). This was one of the things I was looking forward to the most during my trip to SC. My boyfriend and I went on a tandem kayak tour with Clark, and since no one else showed up, it was a private tour! Thank god I was in a tandem because there was no way my arms would have made it through the 2 hour tour by myself. Clark gave us a quick rundown of how to kayak properly so first timers don't have to worry. For the first hour, he took us through the marshes of Mount Pleasant. I was hoping to see some manatees but they didn't feel like saying hi :( There were WAY too many flies in the marshes and at one point, we were covered in them... That wasn't so fun. After we escaped the area, Clark took us out to the harbor and around an island full of birds. There were more birds than I could count, and we learned that was where they made their nests. You can come pretty close to the island but you're not allowed to step foot on it in case you walk over eggs buried in the sand. While out in the harbor, we were able to see several dolphins swimming around!! I had no idea they came so close to the docks. We tried chasing them but they were too quick, but they swam right by some lucky paddle boarders. Clark was a great guide and pointed out a lot of things we would have missed on our own. He was knowledgable about the wildlife and environment and was very pleasant to talk to. It was about $40pp for a 2 hour tour, but you also have the option of renting a kayak or paddle board. Definitely consider checking this out when you're in Charleston! read more

Took the 2 hr guided kayak trip (9:30AM)and Diane was lovely. This was me and my mom's first time, as well as others but we caught on quickly. She was very informative and even handed us all a sheet with different animal life out here. We saw quite a bit of dolphin activity while in the channel out by "bird island". I came remember the correct name. After the trip my mother asked if we could stay out longer and Diane said sure why not. AWESOME!! we went out for another hour just to chill and float in the water. I recommend doing this in the morning or late evening, due to how hot it gets. Stay hydrated. read more

Rented a paddelboard from here for a 3 hour trip out on the creek. Pros: If you are military, you get a discount of $3 off your board. Awesome! There are dolphins and manatees in the water and plenty of birds to watch. This place is located next to some really amazing places to eat and drink. I recommend any of them. The instructors will allow you to go at the pace you want to go at. If you just want to rent a board and go by yourself, they'll give you a quick safety lesson and let you be on your way. If you want to go out on a tour and get a really in depth lesson, they'll do that for you, too. They provide you with life jackets and water shoes if you didn't bring your own. They have a spot for your car keys and other belongings if you don't want to take them out on the board with you. The service is great! Cons: The location they are in is very busy with boats and other people out on the water. I got stuck between two docks for about 10 minutes just waiting for boats and other paddlers to move past me. I'm a beginner, so I didn't quite trust my abilities to move out of their way. The oaster beds are no joke. They'll mess your feet up if you step on them. The sun is POWERFUL! A pro for many, but for those who don't bring sunblock, a disaster. Overall, this place is great! read more

Excellent experience at NAO. Did a 3 hour kayak tour of Shem creek and Crab Island. Diane was a terrific guide. We saw lots of different kinds of birds and a dolphin came right up to me and swam under my kayak! To note, the tour, though advertised as such, did not include seeing the Sullivan's Island lighthouse. Kayaks were clean and staff was pretty professional. Diane gave us a brief tutorial before going out and was very attentive if any of us had any issues. A lovely experience! read more

My girlfriend and I had a great time here. They have free parking and decent prices (take the kayaks out as long as you want!) They offered some basic instructions (we have done this before) and a suggested path based off the tides. The staff is friendly and offered us suggestions for food and fun after the kayaking. I suggest grabbing an adult beverage from a nearby restaurant before your trip. Ask for a to go cup politely and you can take it with you on your water adventure.
