nicer specimens of yellow monkey flower, only $8

This native plant "nursery" is actually located in Berekey's Tilden Park, across the golf course entrance. They're only open a few days a week and it is staffed by enthusiastic plant lovers. There is a wide variety of plants, organized by region, but many are really tiny and will require tremendous TLC to get flourishing in your environment. That said, the prices are average to low. It's like going to an antique or thrift shop...you gotta hunt around for treasures. There are usually several locations with the same type of plant, so if the ones you found look a little scraggly, there might be nicer specimens elsewhere. Keep searching! This place is NOT like a commercial nursery where every plant is pristine. The Bay Area has a bunch of micro-climates and it's unrealistic to expect every plant to thrive in the Berkeley Hills area. I was sad that they didn't have much for the hot/dry climates of the inland Bay Area. I appreciate the signs showing the plants during different seasons. Oh, and did I mention how helpful and friendly the folks are working here? Awesomeness. :)

The Native Here Nursery worker was able to explain, in part, why desert holly is able to survive in Death Valley. (see my photo)

I found this nursery by accident and enjoyed my brief visit. Bought one plant and it is still growing - yes this is exciting for me.

The plants there are beautiful, and the owner (Dom) has the friendliest dog and bunny to keep you company during your shopping trip. I've bought a few plants from there over the years, and she usually gives a few tips for your plant before you leave (or a warning if they're more temperamental). Last year, we were going to try to bulk order plants from Pamana Plantas for our wedding, but to our surprise found out that they provide event services! We were able to work with Dom to design centerpieces and an altar for our wedding. We had given her really vague guidelines to what we wanted and some of our color schemes, and she was able to create a mood board and help us pin down our vision. She was so easy to work with and helped us stay in budget by offering multiple solutions at different price points between purchasing and renting. Super recommend working with them if you're looking for more sustainable wedding flower alternatives.

Pamana Plantas has seriously become one of my favorite plant shops in the Bay. Filipino and…read morefamily-owned, with amazing presentation and great service. Dom is super sweet and so fun to talk to. Their sticker selection is a solid 10/10--so cute. The plants are great quality and absolutely worth the price. The overall presentation of the shop is adorable, and the bunnies and doggo add so much charm to the experience. I've been recommending this store to all my fellow garden gals.

I've shopped here frequently over the years. About a year ago I bought a sterling silver ring here…read morewith a blue stone. Unfortunately, the stone turned into a greenish brown color. I stopped by today to ask about it and was prepared to simply buy a new ring-- it was fairly inexpensive. The store was empty, and there were two people working there who did not greet me when I walked in, as they were busy complaining loudly about someone. I stepped up to the counter, and despite the workers standing behind the counter, and one person looking at me directly, they still didn't greet me. At one point, one looked like she was coming toward me, looked me in the eye and then grabbed her beverage and turned away. Finally I asked directly for help. I showed her the ring and asked to look at the identical one behind the counter. She got very nervous and told me they hadn't seen a stone turn brown before. She immediately told me that she would not contact the company for me, that I needed to do it myself. I hadn't even asked her to. She kept saying things like "well if it had been two weeks we maybe could help you." to which I responded, "do you expect a ring to turn brown after 2 weeks?" She then said she couldn't contact the company because they would "ask her questions" she didn't know the answer to. I have no answers either why a stone would turn brown with occasional wear, no chemicals, etc. I would think they would want to talk to the company about this if they are selling jewelry that turns brown. Anyway, I was just really turned off by the fact that they had an empty store, but yet basically told me I had to contact the wholesale distributor myself. It really seemed like these two are doing everything they can to do the least work possible! I typically think a nice thing about shopping at a local boutique would be the customer service.. not here. I did not buy a new ring, and will not shop here again.
