The National House Inn is a Bed and Breakfast hotel in Historic Marshall, Michigan. It is on the southwest side on the fountain circle and is easily reached from the intersection of highways I-69 and I-94. Each of the rooms is named after a notable person in the history of Calhoun County (Marshall is the Calhoun County seat). There is a short biography of the person that the room is named after posted outside of the room. We found out later that the room we had chosen is said to be haunted! (See "The Lady In Red") However, we were unaware of any supernatural activity during our stay. The National House has a small private lot, but on-street parking in the nearby residential area is available. Many B&B establishments that I have stayed with take great care to assure that their rooms are well decorated and comfortable but in many cases the "breakfast" is somewhat of an afterthought. This is certainly not the case at the National House; the innkeepers do an equally wonderful job of presenting tasty and healthy breakfast choices for their guests. The breakfast items are offered buffet style- and because of this some offerings on that day's bill of fare might be "popular" and as such not available for late-risers. I would say that setting your alarm for an early wake-up is certainly a small price to pay for the delightful treats that are served each morning to guests at the National House Inn. Just steps from the Inn are the popular Mansion Street historic district, and the Honolulu House, which was constructed in 1860. The Honolulu House was converted into a historic museum in 1962; I feel it is particularly fun to visit during the Christmas Holidays or during the annual Historic Homes Candlelight walk. If you can possibly afford the time during your visit to Marshall, I'd strongly advise a stroll down Mansion Street or through the historic downtown area. Driving through just doesn't give you the same feeling as walking and also being able to stop and enjoy the details of the beautiful buildings. I was pleased to learn that the innkeepers are more than happy to help with dinner reservations to the nearby Win Schuler's Restaurant and Pub. If it is at all possible for you to dine, or have Sunday brunch at Schuler's during your stay- I'd certainly encourage you to do so... but that information correctly belongs in another review! The National House has a very well designed website that has helpful photos of the rooms offered as well as a complete description of the features of each room. A small negative is that their website does not offer online booking so you must phone to make your reservations. If you are planning a trip to Southwest Michigan- I'd strongly encourage you to visit Marshall and at least stop by the National House Inn to savor it's peaceful charm and comfort.

The National House Inn in Marshall has all the old world charm of a very nice B&B. Admittedly, this is run more like a business than like staying in someone's home. There were many staff that we ran into during our one night's stay (we had wanted to stay longer and they did not get back to us regarding an opening, so they found us a room at The Way Inn down the street). It was an overbooking situation on their part. The home itself was period and there were many vintage touches. We had the room on the ground floor which was ideal. There was a separate sitting area and 1.5 baths adjoining the room. However, the room was rather dark. They didn't have the best towels and the bath was not the cleanest, but it was good enough for a night's stay. The breakfast consisted of a quiche, fruits, breads, hard boiled eggs, juice and coffee. It was rather "continental" compared to The Way Inn. For some, this would be enough for a quick bite. But it was nothing to write home about. The staff were friendly and there was certainly a homey feeling. The home felt really dark inside though. Lots of parking in the front of the home. Also, it was nicely decorated for fall.

This may have been the worst hotel we've stayed at. It was absolutely filthy. I should've taken…read moremore videos and photos. The photos they have up look absolutely nothing like that I'm person. First off, there's no one at the desk ever. You're constantly looking for someone and the people the run the front desk look like kids. The hallway down to the rooms is disgusting. The walls are dirty and the carpet is filthy with dirt stains EVERYWHERE! The baseboards are also missing in many places. The room reeked of bleach when we got in. There are light fixtures missing parts, stains on the carpet, cigarette burn holes on the drapes, stains on our sheets AND towels. They were clean, but it looked like they were used to clean something dirty and they got stained. The mattress didn't have the zipped mattress cover that most all hotels have and had stains all over it. The pool was completely out of towels and when I asked for some, the girl said she forgot to wash them and disappeared. She never came back with towels or even took the dirty wet ones that were in the pool basket with her to wash them. We had to walk back to the room, sopping wet. There was also trash all over the floor around the pools and some trash floating in the hot tub. They allow pets here and for the first hour we were there, we had to listen to a dog bark nonstop in one of the rooms while trying to take a nap. Breakfast looked inedible. The scrambled eggs had a greenish grey tint in certain spots and mind you, these are just dehydrated eggs. Please don't stay here! Go 5 miles down the road and stay at the Quality Inn in the Firekeepers parking lot... it's sooooo much nicer, the same price and actually clean! We only know this because our parents stayed here while we were at this trash hole of a hotel. We originally got this room because it had the pool and hot tub. NOT WORTH IT

They don't even clean anything good enough and these Indians only want to screw the American and that's a fact ! They know they don't live like this but yet they won't clean there own sheets and blankets because it cost them money and that's all they want to make is money off us white peoples ! This place should be shut down ! Fucking disgusting shit hole ! We called our bank and disputed the charge and sent the photo to the bank and they even said they will remove that charge and said how sick are those people to just treat customers like that

Found Howard's through a search of hotels near the casino and was not disappointed with this find…read more Howard's is a quaint and tidy motel. Reminds me of the old route 66 type motels with actual keys for the doors! We had 4 adults in our party and the beds were nice, desk space was ample along with the amenities of microwave (which we didn't use), tv and refrigerator (we used for water). Bathroom is a bit small for 4 adults with little shelf space but for an overnight stay it was adequate. Don't expect the niceties of typical hotels but 3 packets of shampoo and 3 small bars of soap were provided. Towels were also provided. The shower was fine for me (5'2") but short for my 6' husband. However it had plenty of hot water and the entire bathroom was very clean. Check in was easy and the staff was pleasant. I didn't check for ice but there was an ice bucket in the room. Overall this is a pleasant place to stay and if we are in the area again we will definitely stay here.
