Savin Hill is on the Ashmont branch of the Red Line. It is an above ground station and is next to Interstate 93. It is between JFK/UMass (inbound) and Fields Corner (outbound). Located below the crossover of Savin Hill Avenue, the station is handicapped accessible with an elevator between the platform level and the ticketing concourse. There are audible and visible announcements of the next train in either direction. The station has the usual automated ticket vending machines to purchase a Charlie Ticket or add value to your Charlie Card. A staff booth was unoccupied when I was here in the afternoon. The station platform is covered but quite breezy. I would imagine it gets very cold while you're waiting for a train. Woohoo, I have now been to every station on the Red, Orange, Blue and Green lines from Lechmere to Reservoir, Forest Hills to Oak Grove, Wonderland to Bowdoin and Alewife to Ashmont. Woot! I live exactly halfway between, in consideration of both time and distance. I choose to walk to Savin Hill, despite it's a step backwards in my commute (to Central Square) One of Savin Hill's best comparative features is that it DOESN'T smell like urine! Another is the cleaning crew I see at least a few mornings a week. The station was renovated a few years back, and they really manage the up-keep well. On the first of the month, the staff here is always very helpful while people struggle to buy the new month's LinkPass. And though this has nothing to do with the MBTA, there's a coffee shop, a dry cleaners and a bar all within 100 feet. Savin Hill FOR THE WIN!

There is a small structure here that provides some protection from heavier rain and there are benches. A small animated board lets you know how long to wait until the next bus is due to arrive. The Silver Line, in this part of the city, is served by diesel articulated buses. You'll need to board at the front where you can swipe your Charlie Card or pay the fare. There are no ticket kiosks here at Union Park Street. There is a high school at this intersection, a couple of restaurants and access to mostly residential neighborhoods. Union Park Street "Station" is between West Newton Street (outbound) and East Berkeley Street (inbound).

Easy to do on line - ticket comes in the mail. You can buy a ticket on the train. Free WiFi Bathrooms Cons: If you take the later train there are not many or NO parking spots left Late meaning close to 7:30-8 am Still need to pay on the weekend If you don't pay you they tack on an additional $1 There is a race out to rte 135 which can be hard to get onto. Two small over head canopy's don't cover all the people and are not very big Adults cut the lines too to try to get into the train before people - Annoying! Express Trains can be fuller The MBTA LED boards have info posted but the info is only as good if they post the correct stuff. One train is late then there is a domino effect and they are either all late or even canceled. Would be great if they built a garage The tickets you buy on the train have an extra fee so buy them at the station ahead Tips: -Careful to not miss your stop there may not be another train back -Bring ear plugs, music, etc if you don't want to listen to crying kids or people on their cell phones. -People eat on the train so there are all kinds of smells in the air like McD's Happy Trails

Coming from the DC area, I can compare this to the DC metro system. I will say that the Boston…read moresystem is significantly inexpensive than the DC one. For the Boston Metro you need a Charlie card and it costs a little over $5 dollars to go anywhere on the train. The train itself goes through a number of universities including Harvard and Northeastern. When I was there, they had several repairs going on but they made it very convenient with a bus to get you to another station. The stations were fairly clean and the staff were helpful. Great way to get to where you need to go.

The 214 goes to Germantown and the 216 goes to Hough's Neck. Service has always been good - no problems with this bus. There is plenty of seating space on the platform and during a rainy day the platform overhang keeps you dry. It's an express bus, so for your LinkPass holders it's a little more expensive, but it's quicker than quick because it takes the pike instead of local roads. In fact.. it might be a leetle TOO quick (just a note for those that stand). But when I used to take it.. around 8:30AM.. there were usually enough seats and very few people had to stand. All business folk too. Dare I say it was always on time? Although the drivers sort of remind me of Lloyd the delivery guy from Scrubs. You know, the air drummer (that is.. trivia point.. one of the writers for Scrubs)? So imagine Lloyd driving a bus instead of a delivery truck/ambulance. While fast, you may not always feel the safest..

Moving…read moreto a new apartment off of Comm Ave in September, I thought, hey, I'll save a little money by taking the B line to work every day. Probably one of the stupidest things I've ever done. This bus gets me from its first stop to Federal Street in under a half an hour, without the hassle of stopping at too many red lights, dealing with BU kids who have a state of the art fitness center yet can't be bothered to walk 100 extra feet to get to class, and people who smell like they haven't showered since the Reagan 80's. I have an extra half an hour in the morning to relax, an extra half an hour at night, and all for $30 a month extra. Well worth it. If you live within a mile of one of these express buses and you have to go downtown in the morning - this is the only way to travel. Pay the extra $30 - it will immediately improve the quality of your commute, and the quality of your life, and I stand by that statement.
