    Garbage everywhere, horrible smell
    Gena J.

Check out the garbage everywhere. So indicative of the horrible hostel/ not a hotel. It's awful complete with roaches. We couldn't leave fast enough worried about not only getting bed bites but taking one of the cookaroaches home:(((((( Horrible Experience, stay away!

    Bed bug bite. So gross

I paid almost $500 for four nights. The second night saw a MOUSE in my room. I moved to another room and that next I night saw another MOUSE scampering through that room as well! I checked out and later that day I was having lunch and saw a tiny bug crawling on my forearm. It bit me! I immediately knew it was a BEDBUG! I'm so grossed out. I'm now paranoid that they got into my suitcase of clothes. I stayed in rooms 308 and 307. Don't stay here.

Bed bug I found that morning.

I used Expedia to book a room here, and the site states it has five stars based on reviews. The hotel has a lot of potential with a nice vintage feel, but the shared bathroom and room are not sanitary. The morning of checkout, I was abruptly woken by something crawling on my shoulder. I turned on the lights and saw bed bugs coming from the corner of the mattress. I search the bed and found more bed bugs in the hem of the bed skirt. Traumatized, I went to the bathroom that is shared among other guests to shower. The shower's draining system was clogged, which caused the water to fill up and smelled like someone peed in the shower. Although the hotel staff is nice and the manager gave me a refund for my experience with thebed bugs, I would not refer someone to stay here. Update: The owner has never contacted me to apologize for my experience ‍

Location, location and a low rate! The Nash offers a 1930s hotel experience, upgraded with wifi and some new carpets. The beds and pillows are ok and you can have a private modern bath. Friendly management, looks like this is the Lam family operation. Our room had a desk, dorm-size refridge and a tiny coffee maker, also an iron and ironing board but no hair dryer. Hi def TV and slow wifi, the Ethernet cable in the room gave good service to the laptop but the iPad people had to be patient LOL. Great towels but no wash cloths. You want a thermostat!? Haha, the big radiator in the corner was smoking hot and the control valve was stuck, hmm. No a/c that I could see, but we didn't need it in March. Cigarette burns on the carpet in our room added, uh, character, yeah that's the word. Here you pay the bill at check *in*, right up front and it's called "rent." You get a room key - not a plastic card, a real piece of metal - plus a key for the front door, which is always locked. The front desk is one flight up on the Mezzanine level. See what I mean about the 1930s experience? Despite the street-front location our room was pretty quiet. Except for the occasional knuckle rap on the door about three am. Wtf? Lots of vintage details for fans of old buildings. The doors, trim and radiator sure look original! The old elevator is still going strong. The bathroom in our room (and the shared ones in the hall) had new tile, tub, sink and faucets, but vintage cabinets. You can see a fair amount of cable and conduit snaking along the walls. In short this place is at least a couple of decades overdue for a rehab. Located on University Ave just half a block west of Shattuck (downtown Berkeley's main street). So it's just steps to many interesting bars and restaurants, or a few minutes on foot to the western edge of UC Berkeley campus and the Bart station. Take the money you saved by staying here and blow it at Chez Panisse, about a 10 min walk north on Shattuck.

Someone's medication, bloody gauze, and hospital paperwork.

Unfortunately the ice wasn't in cubes so the flavor was so watered down that I couldn't taste the gin at all...We then were served some great little warm breads with delicious butter YUM! The split mixed iceburg lettuce salad arrived which was a generous portion & well dressed with some notes of tarragon ..nice! John ordered the braised short rib & he subbed out the mashed potato/roquefort for the fried potato disks that came with the rib eye. Good spuds! My beef bourguignon had wonderful toothsome wide egg noodles but weirdly, chunks of green pepper & undercooked pearl onions? The beefy gravy was perfect on the pasta BUT the beef's texture was terrible.. mushy without a smidgen of bite! YUCK! When John had me taste his beef the resuts were much the same... too soft & textureless.. then the opposite...the pretty split carrot halves were too hard & undercooked on his plate to bring out their sweetness....I assume these 2 long cooked meats styles had been sitting for god knows how long I left most of the dinner to take home & see if I could repair the dish... (I'll probably eat the noodles and use the beef in a taco?). so my suggestion is to order the rack of lamb (if I return....which John had had & recommended) & stay away from long cooked items (except beans)

I checked in at about 6pm, and there was still parking available. Being Hilton Gold got me a $55 food credit, Skittles, and bottled water. The room was cozy. The hot water got very hot instantly. The bed was comfy. Cool decor in the room. Booked with Hilton points, so only cost me $68 for parking and taxes. Cons: Most ridiculous bathroom sink ever. With a faucet that was too big for the tiny (8"x12" maybe) sink. You could not wash your hands without getting water everywhere, and washing your face meant soaking most of the bathroom. No place to put your toiletries, other than the tiny glass shelf with the extra roll of TP. Shower not intended for people over 5' 8" A little noisy, but they provided one pair of earplugs. Lights in hall would go out, but I believe they had a motion sensor. No nightstand on one side of the bed. I was not informed of the charge for parking ($40). Food credit hard to use as restaurant closes at 10 pm and 10am. But overall, not bad. I would stay here again.

I'm not usually someone who leaves negative reviews. If you look through my Yelp history, I'm much…read moremore likely to call out a great experience, and if something goes wrong, I usually try to handle it directly with the business rather than post about it publicly. In this case, I tried that, and the way the hotel handled each issue is actually what pushed me to write this. I booked through Travelocity and specifically reserved a top-floor room with a king bed. At check-in, the front desk didn't mention that they were giving us something completely different. We went upstairs and discovered we were on the second floor, near the elevator, with a double bed. When I went back downstairs to ask what had happened, the response was basically that they don't really see those details from third-party bookings, they were sold out of king rooms and the room they gave us was technically more expensive, so we should be happy with the upgrade. That missed the point entirely. If the hotel couldn't honor the room I booked, I would have appreciated someone simply saying that at check-in: "I see you booked a king on a higher floor. Unfortunately we're sold out of kings tonight. Here's what we have available." Instead, we weren't told anything and then were made to feel as though we should be grateful when we questioned it. Then came the bigger problem: at around 2 am, the AC unit started making an incredibly loud, repetitive thumping noise. It was impossible to sleep through. When I went downstairs around 5 am and mentioned it to another front desk employee, the reaction was again surprisingly dismissive. I was told that it's an older building and that there were earplugs next to the bed. There was, in fact, one pair of earplugs in the room, which made me wonder if the hotel already knew that particular room had a noise problem. What bothered me most was not even that something broke. Things happen. It was that there was no real acknowledgment of the problem. No "I'm so sorry." No "We'll have someone check that." No attempt to make it right. Just essentially, "Yes, it's noisy. There are earplugs." If an AC unit is making enough noise that guests need earplugs to sleep through it, that room probably shouldn't be rented until it is fixed. I honestly would rather have been told that the hotel was overbooked and that we needed to find another place than spend the night awake in a small bed in a noisy room. The biggest issue here was the service. Both situations could have been handled very differently with a little communication and basic hospitality. Instead, the front desk staff seemed unprepared to acknowledge problems, explain what was happening or make any effort to address them. So unfortunately, here I am writing the negative review I normally try very hard not to write. I hope the hotel takes a serious look at how its front desk team handles situations like this, because the problems themselves were frustrating, but the response to them made the experience significantly worse.

We took an overnight family vacation over Labor Day weekend to celebrate Mom/Grandma's birthday…read more(three rooms, all featuring beautiful marina views). The Good: Scenic Views: Incredible views of the Berkeley Marina, San Francisco Bay, and the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. The marina-view room was well worth the upgrade over the courtyard view. Location & Outdoor Access: Beautiful walking trails directly outside around the marina, perfect for scenic walks. The kids enjoyed the nearby park (swings, slides, monkey bars), though the Berkeley Adventure Playground was unfortunately closed for the holiday. Housekeeping Staff: The housekeeping staff was the highlight of our stay. Every member I encountered was remarkably warm, welcoming, and helpful. Family-Friendly Amenities: The kids loved the indoor pool and hot tub, and the property also features a sauna, a fitness center, and outdoor games (Cornhole) in the courtyard. 12:00 PM Check-Out: The noon check-out allowed us enough time to enjoy a morning walk and a swim before leaving. The Bad: Frustrating & Stressful Check-In: The front desk's handling of a third-party booking issue was remarkably poor. My mother booked through Expedia since it was cheaper than booking directly, which is disappointing for a Hilton Rewards member (hotels should offer the best prices directly to guests). Instead of addressing the issue immediately, staff sent my elderly mother to her room without a resolution. This resulted in multiple calls and transfers, an unanswered front desk line, and a walk back downstairs and three buildings over to handle it in person. The ordeal took nearly an hour and required speaking with a manager, ultimately leaving my mother in tears and setting an unwelcoming tone at the start of the trip. When I asked why front desk staff aren't empowered to help guests immediately with welcoming solutions, the manager offered little explanation beyond needing approval and looking visibly embarrassed. When I followed up to ask why staff didn't just ask for that approval immediately rather than sending us on a wild-goose chase for an hour, I was met with a simple shrug. Unwelcoming Room Greeting: Following the check-in ordeal, the arrival note in our room addressed to "Dear Valued Guest" focused immediately on quiet hours and no-party policies, rather than a genuine welcome, making us feel regulated rather than valued. Small Double Beds: Two-bed rooms featured full-size beds rather than queens, which felt cramped. Pool Area Maintenance & Layout: Severe lack of seating (only 8 seats for roughly 30 guests), leaving families to place belongings on wet floors. The pool ran out of towels the next morning, and the house phone in the pool area to request more was out of order. Exorbitant Parking Fees: Self-parking is $45/day ($47 for valet), which adds up drastically when traveling with multiple vehicles. Extreme Price Gouging: A small lobby market purchase (3 bottles of water and 1 Gatorade) came out to $48.50. While the cashier was sweet and apologized for the prices, the markup felt unreasonable. Final Thoughts: I would stay here again mainly for the beautiful location if the price was right, though I now know to bring my own food/beverages and manage expectations regarding service. While this property is listed as a 4-star hotel based on its amenities, and I believe any hotel has the potential to deliver 5-star service, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Berkeley Marina ultimately operated like a 3-star hotel with 2-star service during our stay.

The host at the restaurant was unfriendly to the point where I almost walked away, although I will say that the waitress I had was very kind. I requested housekeeping multiple times during my stay. I was later told it was not completed because my "Do Not Disturb" sign was up during cleaning hours. However, during previous stays at this hotel, staff still knocked on my door to ask when they could return to clean the room, which made this explanation extremely frustrating. On two separate occasions, front desk staff told me directly that my room would be cleaned, and it never was. One front desk employee was dismissive and spoke to me with an attitude that made me feel disrespected. To make matters worse, the hotel uses automated text messages sent from "Glenda." I responded around 11:30 AM requesting housekeeping because I had work calls scheduled. I left my room for a period of time, returned to find it untouched, and later received another text stating they were unable to clean my room due to a high volume of rooms. This contradicted what I had been told earlier and was extremely disappointing. The room itself is in serious need of updates. The walls are extremely thin--I could hear doors slamming, people yelling, and even the person in the next room using the bathroom. The lack of soundproofing made it impossible to rest or work. For someone staying away from home, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I've had. I ultimately checked out early and went straight home.
