All military commissaries are full of great deals. This one is no different. This one is huge compared to the military commissary at mayport. This location actually has a seafood department. Only negative point here is the baggers. If you want to bag your own grocery or do not need help to your car. They are rude. They do only work on tips. They should not be rude if a person does not need help with small quantity purchases. read more

I visited the NAS Jacksonville commissary last weekend, while I was visiting the local area. Obviously, because it's located on an active military installation the visitors must have a valid military identification to access the base. The facility itself was pretty new and was maintained to the highest standard of cleanness. The staff is always very friendly and helpful while I'm checking out. I'm sure that we will return for another visit, whenever we are visiting the local Jacksonville area. read more

My family and I are extremely disappointed in the NAS Jax Commissary management. You have managed to out price the average Veteran. Most folks can't afford to shop here anymore. When we are paying more for eggs that chicken there is a major problem. Almost $8.00 for 18 eggs, really? Chicken $3.48lb, really. Most of the time when we shop here your inventory lacks heavily. We end up having to stop at Winn Dixie or Publix for Milk, cream and other items that you do not keep stocked. Your Woke atmosphere and lacky employees "lacking the knowledge to know where or when items will be available leaves a lot to one's imagination. The groceries have done nothing but increase in price for the last 4 years. The Commissary is supposed to be FOR THE MILITARY NOT FINANCIALLY RAPE US! I am not just speaking for me and my family. I was on TDY to Jacksonville NAS for a few weeks and I decided to stop by the Commissary to pick a few things up. To my amazement, the store was incredible. Clean, bright and well stocked. I decided to pick up a few fresh fruits and vegetables and I was impressed on how everything looked. I even strolled by the fresh meat department and was impressed on how well everything was stocked and the prices were so much better than what I experience at home. I did my shopping and did a self-checkout without any issues. Also, everyone was wearing their face masks in compliance with COVID-19 measures. What a great experience. read more

Disappointed and truly saddened by this review I must write. Be careful of the prices here...they are high on a lot of items. Know your prices and shop smart! Get some things here and some things elsewhere of your choosing. I know you can do that compare price thing and they will give it to you cheaper. But that also takes work. Who wants to be bothered with that when they just want to shop and be done with it? We shouldn't have to do that anyway. Please read on... We have been using this commissary for a little over a year. We moved here from Hawaii and it goes without saying the prices are usually a little higher in Hawaii...or so we thought. I thought they were higher here immediately compared to Hawaii. Since we have been going here I have noticed the prices are higher here in Jacksonville and in Florida overall than other places. Even visiting Hawaii after living here and comparing prices...sure enough, the prices are higher here in Florida. But wait, aren't the DECA prices supposed to be similar (cost wise) at least on most things across the board? I guess not...there are differences on prices between here and other bases in Florida too. Plus, there is even a bigger difference in prices compared to out of state commissaries. I recently had the opportunity to go to one in Ohio and wow...that store was much cheaper too. I don't recall such a big difference until now and I've been using DECA for a long time. After all, it's DECA across the board right? This is the one benefit with low pay that one could count on. For example...Does a box of Cheez-Its really cost $1 more per box for this commissary to buy than just a short 6 weeks ago? That 12.4oz. box cost $3.41+surcharge as of today 5 Jan 17. This is just one example of a price hike. 6 weeks ago that same box cost about $2.25. Yes, yes, I know they are supposed to only charge enough to recover the item and can't do Loss Leaders or Deals...but this is a rather significant change. It's bizarre. On that note, I have to finally say something and put it out there. Especially so the retirees will shop smart because every penny counts. All this said, they are getting ready to open a new commissary across the parking lot. Is this why the prices are higher? I don't know. But I have to tell you the prices are definitely higher here and that is all I know. Certain things can still be found that are cheaper, like dairy and bread for example. But my concern is that all prices may show a hike once they move into the new store to help pay for it. Shopper be advised is all I can say. Again, know your prices and shop smart. This commissary is not for one-stop shopping like others you may be used to. Plan accordingly if you are on a budget. And don't forgot to factor in that surcharge for the commissary...cents matters and adds up after all! I am giving them a 2 (I've seen better) because a 3 means they are A-OK and they are not. They need to really take a look at their pricing, empty shelves/low inventory and selection (not enough space to talk about the last two). A 1 would have been an injustice since they do still have some good things at decent prices and the folks are always friendly. The newly renovated commissary is beautiful compared to what we have been using the last few years I've been stationed here. It is extremely spacious, clean and more modern. They definitely had more stock than The old commissary. It felt like we were in Publix not the commissary but with better prices. Even the line to check out went a lot faster than previously. The only recommendation I would make is to make more parking available for the commissary. Other than that don't change a thing. read more

Checked out the NAS JAX Commissary and with a year under their belt since it's grand opening, I am impressed by the layout (at least if not more than double the size of the original Commissary), the larger parking area (more spaces created in the area where old Commissary building was demolished), and a modern clean store design (interior and exterior). The inside of the new Commissary is very spacious and there's a ton of product selections on the Floor. IMO one of the best buys in the Commissary is still meat products - great quality meats at the lowest prices compared to off-base grocery stores. Although my go to Commissary is still Mayport, I can see making a grocery run here if I'm on this side of town and on base JAX to knock out my grocery list. read more

BLUF: My local grocery store for all my staples except for bulk items. The new building has been around since 2017 and is a drastic improvement compared with the old commissary, which had fruit flies everywhere. The old commissary was also smaller and felt cramped. Pros: 1. In general cheaper prices on common every day items compared to your Publix, Winn Dixie and even Walmart. 2. The meats are also well priced and even better priced than costco. The butchers though will not shave your meat if you are looking for shaved brisket or pork that I crave. For this Publix or your local butcher are probably better bets. 3. Spacious and in general very clean. Plenty of parking 4. They do have a small organic food area. 5. Some very well priced specialty items from other countries (ex: Buldak chicken ramen for about 4.50 for a package of 5) Cons: 1. Customer service leaves something to be desired but I find this to be common in most grocery stores. Usually the customer service desk is helpful if there is a mistake made or if you need to return something, though. 2. They have been running out of certain items (ex: soap, toiletries, cereals, cat litter, pizzas, organic eggs, certain milk like almond or lactaid). It almost seems like they cannot keep up with demand with all the military folks in the area. 3. You have to still watch the prices as some items are still not cheaper then they are out in town so do not shop blind! 4. Can get very busy and packed Tips: 1. Always remember if you go through the line with full service you will need to pay the bagger even to bag your bags. About $2 to bag and $3-5 if they come out with you to your car. Self checkout is always available. 2. Blue bell ice cream easily cheapest in town around 5 bucks for a gallon (other ice creams too but this just happens to be my brand of choice) 3.Consider shopping at costco for bulk items as they may be cheaper than buying smaller at the commissary (which may be cheaper compared to local stores but not compared to wholesale) 4. tax free but there is a 5% fee that covers the cost of the commissaries to run (commissaries are only allowed to charge essentially what they paid for the food/item) read more

Brand new commissary. I went in the evening and appreciated the much much bigger space. 16 plus isles of food products. With all that space there is a greater variety of items. I picked up a few things and wundered how shopping here on a Saturday morning will be compared to the old place. I'll come in the evenings. Lol. The parking will still be an issue till they tear down the old building. I like the job they did designing the commissary. It's modern and full of products neeed for all of the dishes and products for all our actice , retired and dependent Navy and all military personnel. Great job!! read more

I come here weekly and it's always a great experience. But not today! The Spanish lady In the self check out was rude as hell. She didn't want to help anyone. I was waiting for her and calling her over to help but she was rude and ignored me. When she finally came over she got an attitude and yelled at me. I was with my younger daughter all we needed was for her to type in her code so we could proceed with our check out. She wasn't wearing a name tag but I'm sure everyone knows who I'm talking about that goes here. I came here around 4 p.m I recommend going somewhere else. read more

Much improved, spacious clean store. The store is amazing when you walk in it is a lot to take in. The layout is a little strange with frozen foods at the beginning and end of the store. The slow lookey Lou's are still blocking isles: but so much bigger than it was. Seafood department is huge and well staffed deli about the same still crowded at lunch time. With all that said the parking lot is a disaster, they must have consulted the VA, cause I guess they don't care if people can park and shop, that's why it gets 4 and not 5 stars. read more

But parking here so I could constant battle. First you definitely cannot beat that your groceries won't be taxed. I save so much money! The place is brand new, and the customer service there is pretty nice. I take one star away due to the business of the place and the horrendous parking that is there, but they are working on the parking lot by taking down the old commissary and replacing it with more parking. The meat prices are almost criminal, such good prices I feel like I'm robbing them! lol The produce is really nice there too! I used to work at Publix at a produce clerk so I am aware of good quality produce. It's good there. I love that there is a lot of variety of products from around the world due to accommodating folks from around the country and world who travel due to being military. Haven't been in the commissary for awhile as I dread going period because of the long traffic lines, rude military active and or civilians and very, very rude baggers. Today I realized I did not miss out on anything. The lines are still too long to get on the installation even at 3pm and they still have the same RUDE baggers that don't speak but expect a tip. Really....... even the cashiers are horrible with sadness!!! Today, the commissary seemed to be a bit warm as if someone forgot to turned the A/C on. It was still a bit overcrowded in there of which I noticed no one seemed to say excuse me or just not be in the middle of the grocery isle, ugh!!! The ground beef at 97% was $5.47 a pound the lowest I saw on up. 93% ground beef was 4.73 on up, and I did not look at any other meet as I think that's disgusting. The cleaning supplies seemed to be at the same prices but the meats has gone up tremendously, the people are even ruder since the last I was in here. I would rather go to Sam's Club than go through this again. I'm too happy of a person. Bye bye NAS, see ya when I have an appointment. read more

I think there should be separate review postings for the NEW NAS Jax Commissary, the half tore down ruins of the previous commissary are still visible as the demolition seems to be taking longer than its actual construction. The new commissary is completely different, wider aisles, higher ceilings, better selection, the seafood counter does not smell like low tide at the docks, and the increased space makes it much less crowded. The layout is similar to a newer Winn Dixie. This is a huge improvement as many military shoppers would justify enduring a shopping experience that you would expect in a Soviet-era market because of the lower prices. It is now on par with its competition outside of the base gates. Much better. read more

This place has ALOT of good deals on food. The only drawback is there isn't a lot of shelf space like your other local grocery stores and food products do tend to run out more often than most. Also a lot of newer and odd food products they don't seem to carry so your better of going off base for those items. read more

I would like to compliment the employees and baggers on their work and courtesy. I usually shop almost daily since I live close by. But hadn't been in the commissary for a week or more. I was startled when I got inside the commissary. Most of the female customers were not practicing the safe distancing from others. I decided that I needed to put on a mask. At times people got congregated in a tight area. Perhaps, it would be helpful if the management could announce periodically of the loud speaker to practice safe distancing as a reminder. One of the highlights of being military is that your not taxed on your food purchases. Yea, there is a 5% surcharge applied to your final bill but you really can make out at this place. I am 96% responsible for making meals in my house but my wife is 100% responsible for the finances. So I have to make sure we get all the items we need and more. The meats are really cheap and they often have manager specials. If your lucky you can snag a few in-store coupons which can really stretch your dollar. They have a nice selection of bulk items as well. It isn't a lot like a Sam's club or Costco but you can find some good items. I like to look for drink mixes, candy and condiments to stock up on. Their fruit and vegetable section are always freshly stocked. Sometimes you can even find some unusual fruits and vegetables not often found in your local produce section. I do have several warning for anyone looking to visit the commissary. If you can help it never go on pay day. It is often crowded and restocking can be slower. Saturday mornings are often the busiest so try to avoid this day if possible. If your DOD make sure you have your ID and anyone with you have some form of identification. At the end of the day great prices and the on the fly in-store coupons will continue to draw me back. read more

Great selection and prices. The employees are super-friendly, but that parking lot is way too small. We drove around for 20 minutes on a Wednesday morning, looking for parking, not even on a payday. It's a cluster. Not that it's anything the store can help, but the other shoppers are some of the rudest I've had the displeasure of dealing with. Just a PSA: if someone happens to be in your way, in an already crowded grocery store, where there is no safe place to stand, just ask them to move. Don't reach over their baby's stroller and risk knocking something onto their child, because that's a good way to find yourself in a Worldstar video. read more

Went here this morning to only be disappointed by the fact there wasn't ANY chicken breast on the shelves. When I asked the meat manager when the new shipment was coming in he gave me a really rude answer and was very cynical with me. It seemed like he was upset with the fact I stopped his gossip session with the cashier at the front. Its a gorgeous commissary and very clean but they are very unprofessional and rude. It's as if they think we have no other choice but to shop there and they can be as rude to us as they want. If it weren't for the military and their spouses they wouldn't have jobs. read more

The prices weren't as good as I thought they would be, but they aren't terrible. Some things the prices are much better. They sell Boarshead meat in the deli and the kind of dog food we buy - these are the only things we get here. The hassle of getting on base, manicuring the parking lot, and the drive are not worth it to us. read more

Love this commissary! It's gigantic too! Awesome sushi stand, very nice olive & antipasta counter. And the seafood and meat areas? Forget about it!! FABULOUS! The prices were very respectable and won't break the bank. I really appreciated the variety they offered. In regards to the level of customer services this by far is the worst commissary that I have ever been to. Our cashier complained about being at work and the fact that she had to work the next day, complained about the customer that was in front of us and barked at my husband for not putting his pin in fast enough. The prices are great however I'd rather pay a little more and go somewhere who offers better service. read more

DECA bills themselves as a great alternative to buying groceries off-base. The problem is the surcharge (read: tax) they add to your purchase. By my estimate it comes to 5%, which is less than the 7% sales tax that Duval County charges. BUT there is no sales tax on most grocery items anyway in Florida. Bottom line: do your homework on prices as you would at any retail outlet. read more

It's nicer and bigger than the old building was, but there's what I consider a serious design flaw. There is no longer the ability to pull up closer to the doors under cover if it's raining or you want to drop off someone who has difficulty walking long distances. The parking is at least the length of a football field to the doors. read more

i often ( 50 -70% of the time ! ) get " overcharged " when, i shop here ( never once, undercharged in 20 yrs !!! ) :o(( i never get more than, a half of cart of items so, i can carefully watch all items & prices ..... being scan ??? i was " charged , nearly $ 15.00 " for items that, weren't even in my cart !!!!!! last weekend , it happed again ... they had razors listed for one price ( on the rack , in large black letter !!! ) and charged me " twice the price " at check out !!! they called over, the " so - call manager " ( ??? ) and he said that's a old price and i needed to pay higher price !!! many of the " " prices are cheaper " " at wal- mart / sam's costco with ...... much better " customer service & respect " !!!!!!!! without driving ...... 20 - 30 or 50 miles to buy ..... We usually have a great experience when we come down from NSB KingsBay to NASJax. Today we had a surprising conflict with one of the cashiers, to the point where we almost walked out and left our purchases. We had help getting a 57 pound bag of dogfood on our cart and when we got into the line the cashier, Wanda, told my husband he would have to remove it off our cart for her to scan. I suggested we just borrow the scanner and quickly we can zap it so we didn't have to remove the bag again, only then to put it back again. Well she looked at my husband and told him that he needed to get it off the cart. I told my husband we can just go to a different line. He said no, he took it off the cart and had to set it on the belt - it was too heavy for him to hold. Wanda and the 2 baggers giggled and began talking to each other about how he is mad now. . . . we stayed in her line, let her check our food. I wish we would have gone to a different line. It was the 1st time in 27 years we have had a negative experience but it was terribly inappropriate for Wanda to insist we get the food off our cart. read more

I normally love going to the commissary , however , on several occasions I've gone there and a particular cashier I believe her name was Karlesa , is especially rude . She is rude to the baggers & picks fights with them in front of customers . I was very shocked to see that someone would be so rude to their co workers in front of me .
