I dropped in on a weekday. I like in the children's area that they have a large sign with what is going on for the day which included story time and a take home craft. This library may seem to profile certain patrons who may choose to study, use computer in the lower level. I have come to this library several times & may sit on the upper/first level. The lower level has the vending machines so I may choose that area to sit with a window view-street view so to speak & if need to take a short break to stretch, can easily treat self to the vending area. Not to focus too much on this, I came to the library to connect my setup, computer, hotspot for a project. I had to use the lavatory, however the upper/first floor one was occupied so I took the elevator to the basement level to attend to whatever. After I was refreshed, I decided instead of going back upstairs to study, work, I would set up shop on the lower level with a window view. I managed to get some things accomplished for close to an hour after setup & was fairly comfortable to the point I would watch TV listening through my bluetooth headphones. I decided to get something from the vending machines, snack, soft drink & was delayed a bit there because of others who were there prior line at the vending machine. After I got the snack/drink, I proceeded to head back to my station/table mind you with my headphones still on as was listening to the TV broadcast so not too far from where I was working. Some librarian or lady approached me saying something so I had to remove my headphones to figure out what she was trying to communicate. She said something about I should not leave my items unattended & because kids are down in this section they may bother my stuff or something. That was the furthest from my mind as I have worked in this area in the past like on Sunday nights & no one has ever raised any concern to me about that. I was confused about the librarian's concern because if kids were down there, they should be monitored & supervised by their parent(s) or guardian(s). There should be no reason for anyone to bother my stuff if the place is honest. After this rude exchange with me, I figured the librarian did not want me there especially in that section as maybe adults should NOT be in the children's section. So I decided to just leave the library entirely as I felt unwelcomed & considering this has never happened to me in the several times I have studied on either floor level. I would not recommend perhaps adults to study or setup anything on the lower level, children's section as this librarian may have had concern that the kids would be unruly, out of control & unsupervised as to tamper with someone else's items in that section. Other problems with this library since I am on a roll: Well!, the bathrooms only have 1 stall so the reason I went to the lower level was to use the lavatory. I now regret having to go to the lower floor but it was out of my control & could not wait for the upper/first level lavatory was free. I also regret now perhaps remaining on the lower level to study though I thought & have asked in the past if it was fine to set up & study on the basement area though kids seem to be running around down there. The noise never bothered me because I have my listening phones on. And today, when I was rudely approached, there was really no activities down there so I really did not understand why this librarian approached me unless it was some type of profiling situation and did not want someone like me to be there. I clearly disagree with the librarian's assessment that my items were unattended as I had just left my set up area & remained on the same level just to go to the vending area. It was not like I went back to the bathroom or went upstairs or went outside for a moment. I could still receive the BT audio signal from the TV program I was watching and listening to and thus did not abandon my items & I did not feel any concern that my items would be tampered with by anyone. I assumed people are trustworthy perhaps more so than this librarian who approached me. Perhaps dishonest patrons here? Fine, I will not come to this library again. There are better ones. Another problem: Cramped or no adequate parking. In summary: They say adults can study and set up shop in the lower level area that may be for children but yet they really do not want adults down there and will blame the adult if they have their computer setup down there so clearly they do not want an adult down there other than those attempting to supervise their offspring. Adults should stay in the upstairs sections. Sometimes some parents did let their progeny run around out of control down there jumping on some thing on the floor with a balloon image. So it could be a safety issue if they have no control of things running into something that is pretty much stationary. --running the risks of injury. so adults or those studying probably would be best going to the upper level to study and let the lower floor remain for youngsters activities and the librarians should do a better job to not mislead adults saying they can study safely down there. read more

GREAT library. They were one of the FIRST to have comics, which now most libraries have comic trade paperbacks and mango. I discovered "The Walking Dead"comic here. AWESOME! This is right next door to downtown Naperville so it's a good place to chill. read more

Really disappointed In this library. For being the downtown library in an affluent town like Naperville it really is lacking. The children play section is one tiny area where families are cramped like sardines. There are no cool STEM tote bags to check out. I've been to some of the other libraries like the one in woodridge and the one In Darien and they have really robust children sections. They are decorated like forests. Have STEM totes they can check out based on age. The have a big screen TV where you can play games. Oh yes and the parking. The parking lot is used for downtown shoppers making it difficult when you want to park close and have a 4 and 3 year old with you read more

I love libraries. Nothing like a good book and what better place to discover your next read than at your public library? This location is right by the river and downtown. There's a parking lot, but it tends to get full during the day so you may want to consider street parking or one of the garages near by. There are two floors. The first is mostly for the kids. The second floor has everything you could want in a library - books, music CDs, movies, magazines, private rooms, and numerous spots to sit and get some work done. Lots of outlets for Ethernet and power! Get the Naperville Library app and you can just access your card from there along with performing all the usual library services. Ok so I came to the library to study right. Libraries quiet for the most part, minimal background noise. Well not the Nichols library, I walked in found the "Quiet area" it definitely wasn't quiet. When you walk into the area is says "cell phones for texting only". Be respectful. That wasn't the case with the lady sitting a few feet away. She was having a full blown conversation. On top of that I could hear other's conversations. Sooo this area wasn't really quiet. Parking also sucks here. It should only be designated for library users and not for the convenience of downtown Naperville shoppers. Maybe I came in at a bad time but I definitely couldn't focus. read more

So, in an effort to live off the grid (ya know, besides credit cards, student loans, car payments, cell phones, e-mail, facebook, myspace, twitter, foursquare, yelp, and what not), I've never had a library card... ever. In fact, after speaking with my BF today, I realized that I haven't checked a book from a library since I was in the 5th grade. I even remember the book. It was called "Manatees" and I had it memorized from checking it out every week from third grade to fifth grade. Now, you'd think after the first 2 years they would've just let me keep the book, but no. Instead, they banned me from checking it out for 2 weeks while in the fifth grade to "give someone else a shot". You know how many kids checked it out during that 2 weeks? Well, I'll tell you. It was zero, a big fat goose egg. Stinkin' Commie librarians. It is from this childhood trauma and scarring that I believe I developed a bad taste in my mouth for libraries. That is, until today... enter The Nichols Library of Naperville. I was a little worried at first that it would be like church and they would take one look at me and know that this sinner hasn't been bonin' too many books. I think at first they were a bit weary of me... it was actually harder to get a library card than it was to get my drivers license but I understand where they're coming from with what I'm sure is a meager budget and with my closest encounter to library in the past 10 years being the episode of 'Silent Library' on MTV with Justin Bieber, I'm sure I looked like a high risk liability to them. Once I got my card I was assisted at the questions desk (I had LOTS of questions) with all my needs for a few reference books. The woman at the counter was so helpful and so well versed in everything she had available. She was probably the smartest person I'd ever met... and it was probably all due to books. Once I had my reference books I took a table by the window overlooking the river. It was easy to find seating and there was plenty of space for my laptop, my 3 giant reference books, and I. The wifi is free and they have a speedy little internet connection. I absolutely fell in love with the place. With all the magazines, dvds, blu rays, cds, oh, and books, it was hard to see anything but hearts for the Nichols Library. It's probably the coolest place I've been to in Naperville and it's all totally free. I was able to sit there and bone books for 4 straight hours without hassle. I even checked out a few things... okay, they were DVDs, but so what? It's a step in the right direction and at only $1 a rental, how could I pass it up? PS- Star Trek was sexy and I can't wait to watch 'The Crow' tomorrow. This little Nerdy Birdie can't wait to fulfill her book cravings at the Nichols Library. Mmmm... lieberries! read more

I've been going to this library for 20 years. It is really a shell of of its former self. Shelves are disorganized, and you can't browse. Poor selection of books. No "popular picks." Librarians do nothing but sit and gossip; yesterday, I heard a very loud, self-self-rightous "conversation", shaming those who don't wear the masks properly. I think they are also patrolling the stacks, looking for wrong-doers. I don't need busy-bodies policing me. Or useless public employees. So I'm done. I'll spend the money on Amazon kindle subscriptions and have a far better selection of reading materials. read more

This library has it all: tons of great reads in all genres, graphic novels, young adult section, a great computer lab, a whole floor dedicated to kids. Totally close to a Starbucks and the river walk making the idea of grabbing a book, a coffee, and a bench near the river super easy. Did I mention it's completely free to rent DVDs? Let's never pay to rent those again. And they have a great music selection. read more

The staff is SOOOOO friendly, especially when I take my 7 year old son in search of Ninjago books and movies....they are more than happy to walk upstairs if something just came in. We love the Naperville Public Library system and the Nicolas library did not dissolve! The play area for kids had a ton of toys and it was nice, clean, and organized. The only downside with this library is the lack of parking, especially in downtown Naperville, it can be hard to find a spot. read more

Best public library EVER. They have a wide selection of books, CDs, DVDs, books on CD, research materials, etc., as well as an easy-to-use catalog system and a bevy of helpful librarians. As other reviewers have mentioned, DVD rentals are only $1 - and non-fiction movies (documentaries, educational programming, and recorded operas and musicals) are FREE! (Okay, maybe I'm the only person who thinks that's awesome, but I'm a big nerd.) As an added bonus, the Nichols Library location has a gorgeous view of the Naperville Riverwalk. Although an older building, this library has up-to-date everything (check-out system, literature, play area for the little ones, information to help students with their homework, and CLEAN bathrooms)! The play area for the children is set up next to the storytime room; this room is large enough for many families to be in and is set up for kids of all ages to participate. The play area has a very large rug with every letter of the alphabet, puzzles, puppet show theater, toys with letters on them, and trucks/cars to play with. The board books are on little kiosks all around the space. The librarians come around periodically to check on everyone. It is busy in this area but everyone is cognizant of each other's activities. It is kept clean and everything is in order. We had such a fun time today and were welcomed with a smile! read more

They have a large selection of BBC sitcoms, and great free programming including Native American Musicians, Indian Dancers, etc. Awesome kids' games on the computers, Lemon Snicket is our fav! I was just there as I just moved here and I am huge reader. I was so excited to be living close enough to a library where it is easier access for me and my service animal. So I was very shocked when I was treated by a dark haired women with a butterfly mask demanding I leave. I asked why and she said dogs are not allowed. I said well he is a service animal I need him near me. She said I would need to produce papers for him. I was like no I do not. Service dogs do not have papers. She asked again that I leave because they do not service our kind. So I walked back with my dog in tears because the library is always been a safe place for me and to not be judged by race or my health issues. This lady took that from today. It truly makes me sick. I think you need to hire people with more compassion as my illness is not visible. read more

Many fond memories of Nichols Library... Feeding my love of reading as child... Doing research for random junior high and high school projects... Studying for exams... They've reorganized the interior a few times over the past 15 years and while some patrons can be loud and obnoxious, there are some study corrals hidden away near the windows that are more isolated. They have a good selection of books to check out, audiovisual stuff and references - something for everyone. And even though it's long-since expired, I still have one of the old-school library cards - the white one with an image of the library itself on the front. read more

I'm a big fan of public libraries and have been known to visit the local library in whatever town I happen to find myself. This one is special. There are 3 libraries in the Naperville public library system, but I am partial to this one. First, it has a cute little window inside the front door, behind which is a mini diorama of the old library. Once your child or grandchild finds that they can climb up a couple of steps and push a button to reveal the scene, it will always be a mandatory stop on the way in. There's a fine selection of movies for rent, cozy spaces to read with nice views of the Riverwalk. The children's department downstairs is friendly and welcoming, with lots of toys, books, and new playmates to be found. The librarians upstairs and down are happy to help, friendly, and don't judge you if you bring your book back a little late *ahem* although they WILL happily take your coins as payment. Parking: as others have mentioned, it's not the greatest, because parking's just at a premium in downtown Naperville. But it's worth it for the solid charm of this place. I think the building is getting a big facelift inside later this year as a plus. Their new app has some bugs to work out, but now it's even easier to put books on hold, get interlibrary loan, download books and check your account. And YAY they have a digital library card on there that works with their in-house scanners. So modern.. read more

Very easy to use library catalog and a no-hassle hold system (which you can even use online at home) Sometimes parking is a pain at the downtown Naperville Nichols branch on the weekends or in the evenings. Naperville Public Library has received some of the highest awards and recognition a library can receive. A mantle littered with trophies and ranking certificates doesn't mean anything if only the talking heads in ivory towers care. Is the NPL system a reliable, sleek literary sedan with posh touches or a lemon wrapped up in schlocky awards and praise from people who don't really exist, like many top 100 Amazon reviewers? NPL is a Porsche crossed with a BMW in the days they were actually good, sprinkled with Japanese practicality and bulletproof reliability. Yes, indeed, the system really is every bit as good as they say it is and then some. Nichols Library is the heart of the local system, the original branch though neither the biggest or the newest any more. The explosive growth of the community in twenty years puts those laurels in the mid-2000s built 95th Street branch, but Nichols isn't left in the dust. Flanking downtown Naperville and steps above the DuPage River (creek, really), Nichols Library anchors the original heart of the city with its two storey, glassed-in architecture reminiscent of nearly all academic buildings produced in the 80s. What looks dark and a bit blocky from the exterior immediately opens up into spacious, modern facilities. Downstairs is given over entirely to a large meeting room used by everyone from the local NaNoWriMo group and presenters for library programmes (like "Touring India" or financial planning classes) to city council candidates. The children's section takes up the rest of the floor along with a computer lab, and everything in the kids' area is tailored to small people. Colourful, friendly surroundings have kid-sized tables and chairs, racks of books and shelving parents can easily peep over. Outstanding resources available include kid-friendly computers, a broad array of daytime reading programmes for infants to teens, and extremely knowledgeable curators/librarians who must have the patience of God to deal with the city's preschool population on a regular basis. No dark and musty corners, here, be assured. Teens and the adult collection take up the main floor, though a fraction of NPL's impressive collections are on site. Fully established sections for romance, young adult, mystery, sci-fi/fantasy, and popular literature stagger up the stacks. Fiction and non-fiction receive equal love, and as a graduate of Naperville's Citizens Academy, I can tell you this after having a very intensive study of the library's programs and procedures. City tax dollars are heavily invested into improving the literary offerings across the spectrum, so new books found on Amazon or in Barnes & Noble or Anderson's Bookstore down the street are just as likely on the shelf in Naperville within days of release. The website does a fantastic job of highlighting new releases and fresh acquisitions. They also support eBooks and audiobooks across the board. Numerous magazines on just about every subject, including some very obscure titles and prestigious journals, are free for the perusing in comfy chairs where you could spend hours if you wished. NPL rivals Netflix, Redbox, and Blockbuster for its DVD collection; $1 and it's yours to rent, including entire box sets for 14 days. Take that, Netflix! Even better, regular sales for gently used DVDs purchased in quantity mean you too can buy recent releases for no more than $5. Nichols' only major drawback is limited parking, exacerbated by downtown visitors parking there and wandering away. Plans to expand the parking deck into a multistorey structure ended up shelved by the recession. read more

I just found out they fired all of the security monitors to pay for a new executive position. This is a disgusting use of taxpayer money. They used too much money on the renovations at 95th street library. Watch the quality of cleaning and security go way down, so an executive manager can make more money! When they already have a director. Duplication of services in executive level is government waste and abuse of the system. The board should be ashamed. read more

I love this library! My family and I come here a lot for books, or movies or free wifi. It is ALWAYS clean and the staff here have always been so willing to help. I can't say enough how much I love the peace and quiet on the upstairs level. On top of all that it has the most beautiful views of the Riverwalk and is near so many neat spots downtown. 17 years of this library telling me how great it is have not made it so. Yes it's very busy, but no, it's not better than much smaller community libraries that have far fewer resources to draw upon. The old catalog software system was better... MUCH better. The library ignored my comments during the evaluation phase for the software. Now, after more updates, the system is no better and they recently made the self checkout kiosks worse with smaller text and an extra step to finish. Who in hte world designed that GUI? Wow. The website circa 2012 is a nightmare of wasted space and useless info. Why do people hit a library site? TO SEARCH THE CATALOG. I use the mobile site even when home to eliminate the clutter. The staff are usually very helpful, but the checkout folks can range from great to downright incompetent and insulting. I have recommended many purchases with varying results: I was told a renowned design reference text could not be purchased because it was over 2 years old. There was no newer version to buy!! Got it through interlibrary loan. I was told a CD could not be purchased because it was not available through their overpriced library supplier. Somehow it gets purchased 3 months later once the group gets noticed!! Oh, but ask for some obscure profane garbage hip hop and there it is on the shelf. I was told a movie couldn't be purchased due to low reviews. 2 months later, yep there it is on the shelf. I guess enough people asked for it by then. The textbooks for District 203 are supposed to always be available but are frequently incorrect or not there at all. When I inquired about a specific text, they told me that was 203's problem. Nice. The prior director was a ding dong. Hopefully things will get better moving forward, but I doubt it. They will likely continue to tell you about their awards and how much use the library gets. read more

I love the library. I admit that I am a dorky book geek and feel like everyone should read books and utilize this amazing resource. In the past I have used several libraries in the area and nothing compares to the NPL. There is a reason they win awards for being the best library EVERY year. Below the things I noticed lacking at other libraries that NPL is outstanding at. 1 - Story time/Crafts - OMG. You never have to send your child to pre-school because you can attend story time. ITS FREE. For half an hour a librarian reads stories, sings songs, does counting/color/letters on the felt board. Amazing. Or for craft time you read a story than do a craft tied into the book. Out of the three libraries there is always a story time going on. Some are age targeted as young as Lapsit(babies) to Pre-K age or stumble into Open story time where everyone can jump in. And in the summer they do story time at the River Walk! Amazing resource for parents! 2 - Online catalog/holds - I almost never look for books since I hear about a book and throw it on my hold list. An email arrives announcing I have a book waiting for me and I pop in to pick it up. So easy. 3 - Adult classes. There are so many. Learn to do your taxes, use Photoshop or Excel, learn to use your e-reader. I noticed these classes after I got a Nook and did not understand how to check out a book online. Twice a week a free class is given on how to use your e-reader. Love it! 4 - There are so many resources at the library for kids that people don't know about. Things you can check out besides books - movies, for free!!(adult movies are only $1 and you get them for 7 days!!) and they have a ton of new ones as well as older classics that are hard to find, Rainbow Brite? He-Man? Got it! Hooked on Phonics, Learn to Speak French/Spanish/Italian/German kits, puzzles, books on CD. Take a walk beyond the books and you will be amazed. Not to mention the great play area that is an awesome place to take your kids to socialize with others. 5 - Don't want to spend $600 to buy Adobe? The library has it on their computers where you can use it for FREE. I designed all my wedding paperwork on library computers. 6 - They updated their systems so that if you are a dork like me you can type in your memorized library card number and scan and check your books out on the automated machines. So quick. So convenient. No more worry about forgetting your card Though I mourn our transition to suburbia, there is one thing that I know I love and will continue to love and that is the library. I usually hate public libraries because they tend to be louder than I'd like due to the programs they have. What I like about this place is the quiet study room where I can go and not be bothered. It is probably the best part. They also have a "cafe" downstairs where you could eat your outside food. It's been my place to study this month and I try to go everyday. I like the location because it is in downtown Naperville. So if you need a break, you can always walk outside and there is sooo much out there. Not a great place to study. People are always talking, eating, or they're sick (constant, loud, disruptive coughing)... I don't mind quiet talking in the background, but when it's at the table next to you, this can make concentrating difficult. There are not enough study rooms either. Nichols should create a quiet zone area like CoD has for its library. The quiet room they have is okay, but still insufficient in my opinion. Another commenter said it has temperature issues too, so I account for this problem as well. Then there's the parking. It would be nice if the library designated a row of parking spaces just for library patrons. This would balance the usage for everyone who needs parking in downtown Naperville. read more

The library is an important part of my life. I moved to Naperville in 2012, and it took me a while to warm up to this branch of the city's public library, located downtown, and the one closest to where I live. This is a big library, and even after the renovation, it's not a very cozy space, and I rarely find myself sitting here and reading. But the selection of books, and especially films on DVD, is very good. There is an interlibrary loan service, that while not quite as extensive as is available in some other suburbs, is still useful, and I have been able to obtain books using it on several occasions. The children's library on the lower level is absolutely top notch, with great librarians that can recommend books for your child, plenty of I pads, and arts and crafts projects. Parking can be an issue, as it is throughout downtown. If the lot fills up, there are usually spaces available in the Rubin park district building across the street, or in the City Hall parking garage. read more

I love this library ,helpful staff , snack area and selling old books for a cheap price ,it's amazing ! Every week they buy new book and They have a large collection of manga ( it's still growing!) many of the haters say that they should invest more money in making it look more modern and upgrading rooms etc BUT it's a library they invest more in books than in renovations ITS WHAT THEY DO The only complaint I have is that in the teen aisle the some of the teens who use the computer are super loud it will be quite and once a large group of friends who use the computer enter it's so loud! read more

They recently upgraded this library and it is an amazing study/reading environment. All natural lighting shining in from the huge windows overlooking the Naperville Riverwalk. It's never too loud or distracting and the staff is really sweet and helpful. I think the people who complain about parking are ignorant of the location because there is sufficient parking for the size of the library and they can't control the typical Naperville overflow from downtown. Bring kids here because it is super safe and an overall great environment. read more

i love this library so much. It is a nice place to just relax and browse the books. I enjoy going with my son, we have spent hours and hours here as he has grown up. One of my favorite features is the online catalog where you can manage your account (renewals, holds, etc) and come into the library to find your books waiting for you on the shelf. I have been coming here for over 15 years and have always loved this library. However, the parking here is a joke. You'll ether have to drive around the lot for several minutes or park several blocks over. I usually only go there to pick up my items on hold, so having to play the parking lot game is ridiculous.
