After a shockingly poor experience at Gourmet Burger Kitchen across the way, to quote Bonnie Tyler I was holding out for a hero, I hoped Nando's could be that hero as across many branches have had excellent standards of food and standards, I hoped this branch would be no different, located in Sheffield's The Moor in the centre of the South Yorkshire city, but I was wrong.
The interior and exterior of this place is pretty cool, it stands out and in a way, it looks and feels better at times than a regular Nando's store, apart from the counter which I feel is a little compact and a tight squeeze compared to other branches such as my local Manchester - Spinningfields.
I liked how they had the Nando's logo, the cockerel outside as well as other tweaks to the decor including a huge wall of seating, booths, and a communal seating area (different tables, just a long red sofa) for eating, the design of the sofa seemed brighter and more colourful compared to other branches, which sadly is where the superlatives and praise for this branch comes to an abrupt halt.
I decided to order two 1/4 chicken with medium spice and two lots of peri chips, this should have come to £11.70 but I decided to use two of my loyalty card rewards (green) which covered the cost of the chicken, meaning I only had to pay £5.20 for the sides - to be honest, the sides on their own really are pretty expensive and make the loyalty scheme less worth-while unless you acquire a red reward (10 transactions of £7 or more and worth around £11.75)
The staff here seemed nice enough, but they also in many ways seemed like they didn't care at all and they seemed to lack basic skills, not just a lack of training but a lack of common sense, an example of this is where my nearly full plate of food was taken away only for me to have to stop the server doing so, when I had to refill my water.
I also didn't like how this store differed from regular Nando's stores by not having any pepper sachets on the shop floor, you had to ask for it, originally I was told they didn't have any at all - what sort of restauraunt makes you ask for pepper and replies "we don't have any"?
Also, they also didn't have plastic pots which I didn't like, instead I had to use an awkwardly sized squishy paper pot for my sauce, which was pretty awkward to use and I didn't like, my mayo was presented in a small, glass pot again this was messy, the mayo seemed to be around the edges and the staff seemed happy to serve it to me like that, meaning I had to use a napkin - it was disgusting.
The food was presented on a fairly small plate, previously when ordering the same order, I'd have the food on two plates to separate both of the 1/4 chickens, and allow more room, it seemed hard to cut into the chicken without it going all over, which also puzzled me.
The chicken quality was poor, it was bland and dry, the skin tasted more watery than crispy and spicy which it should be, despite asking for "medium" it has virtually no spice, the chips weren't much better and were on the verge of inedible, they were undercooked, bland and a little soggy.
Another unusual and "different" part of my dining experience was an unusual noise, kind of like an alarm or something similar appeared to go off, the staff who were all congregated together around the tills just talking (Why weren't they going around making sure customers and diners were okay and to see if they needed anything extra?) went off for the while, it was so bad it appeared to silence the in-store music which seemed just faint to this strange, irritating alarm like noise. (Strangely, it wasn't an alarm and I never found out what the noise was - the thing that shocked me most was how noisy and constant it was and how the staff stood there, acting as if it was nothing.)
I left feeling frustrated and perhaps one of my worst experiences at a Nando's store, this place tries to be different from other Nando's stores, even the plates are unusual and a different shape and colour to what I usually have at any other branch, but I don't know why they try to be different, this branch is the ugly sister of any other Nando's stores I've visited because of the staff lacking common sense, poor food quality and presentation of all condiments (salt, pepper, ketchup, mayo), so with regret I feel this Nando's store becomes one of the few branches of the chain I think is bad enough to warrant a single one-star rating, as I recall it is the first branch outside the Wembley area of London to warrant such a rating from myself.
