Yesterday was pancake day, I received an email from bills about their pancake party, I had to go!!!…read more I phoned up for a table for 3 people at 5.45 to 6pm but was told they were fully booked until 6.30pm! So I left it. My colleagues and I walked into Sheffield from our hotel, deciding on cafe rouge as they have crepes on the menu but thought we would try bills for a table as its only next door! We saw lots of empty tables, asked the staff for table for 3, they said yes!! My colleague asked why we couldn't get a table when we phoned up, to be told they keep some free for walk ins. Meal was fine, and we ordered the pancakes as dessert, the waitress was knowledgeable in explaining what each pancake consisted of! Plus have suggestions for cream and ice cream to one guy. It's a nice restaurant, which is a chain, slowly opening in different cities as they opened in Birmingham now!

So after the debacle at one of the Bill's in London, I kind of stayed away for awhile. I know…read more.. not every location is the same, but sometimes you are really just put off by the memory. However, I was putting together a day of team building, with lunch to get out of the office and also get to know each other since this would be the first time we would all be working in the same office. I scouted the area we would be in, so we could just walk and not have to worry about public transport or driving and Bill's seemed to be the restaurant that was most convenient, but also offered a wide variety of food that would cater to everyone. I booked online and even though we were a bit late, it could not have been easier! It was nice and cozy and had that rustic, market feel about it. We had hummus and tzatziki with bread and crudite to nibble on while we tried to decide on lunch. For starters I had the Avocado, Bacon, and Spinach Salad, while the other three had the Crispy Lemon Squid. I don't know if they all planned it that way, but it was nice to see that clearly, they have something in common :). Everyone seemed to enjoy the squid and the salad was really nice... in fact it was so nice that I thought maybe I should have ordered it as a main. It is filling, but still quite light. For mains two had the Buttermilk Chicken (which looked awesome), one had the Kale Salad (which looked lovely, but I'm not a fan of raw Kale), and I had the Lime and Coriander Chicken. The chicken was a bit dry, but the flavor was wonderful! If anything they could do with serving it with some warm, soft corn tortillas and salsa. The sweet potato fries were a nice side, but if I am being honest, I don't remember the kale coleslaw at all. I remember there was a coleslaw, but nothing else about it. It was still a really nice lunch, although there were remarks about how it was a touch on the pricey side. Service was efficient and at the end when two of us stayed to have a chat, no one rushed us off, which was really nice. Overall, a great way to get reacquainted with Bill's.

I remember that there was a cafe or a restaurant here before, but I didn't realize that Appetito had only opened a week before our lunch. Inside, the decor is simple, but still lovely. It is cozy with not a huge amount of tables, but that might be attractive to those wanting a quite leisurely lunch or espresso. We were warmly greeted as we walked in. If you have a seat at a table, there are menus, but make sure to have a glance at the board behind the till as there are specials available as well. They have large, beautiful slices of pizza on Focaccia Bread, salads, sandwiches, and some warm dishes like aubergine lasagne. I decided on the Parma Sandwich with rocket, prosciutto, tomato, mozzarella cheese, and pesto, served with a mixed green salad that is lightly dressed with olive oil and vinegar. My colleague decided to have the Nicoise Salad. As we were sitting there I was looking around and you can see food items from Italy on the shelves, fresh produce and chilled drinks in the chiller, and... lovely little cups of Tiramisu should you wish to indulge! We also saw some of the pizza in the display case near the till and it looked so delicious. Our food came out fairly quickly and it looked wonderful. Fresh, light, but filling. The sandwich was delicious and just the right size and it was nice to have the salad on the side as well. We thought that the Nicoise Salad would have canned tuna like every other place, but this was a fresh piece of Tuna that had been seared and placed on top of the salad. My colleague was delighted! The waiter/barrista (and perhaps manager?) was very attentive and checked to make sure our food was to our liking. After we finished our food, he brought over a couple of small pieces of their flourless chocolate cake and that's how we learned that they had just opened. They also have takeaway cups for coffee, so pass the chain coffee houses, and head for Appetito! This will probably be my lunch spot when I'm at the main campus for meetings.

After having some pretty dreadful experiences eating out in Sheffield city centre with one-star "avoid at all costs" experiences with Nando's and Gourmet Burger Kitchen to name just two - this place is probably one of the better places in terms of food quality in Sheffield based on multiple recent visits to the South Yorkshire city. Inside, it is pretty large and modern - it does feel like pretty much a chain Italian which it is, I like the bold decor with Italian proverbs which really helps to bring out the wall. They also have an open kitchen which I do like, I was able to watch my "sever" cook my food - you could tell the passion for cooking: watching him taste it for seasoning etc (and using his gold iPhone...) The service was pretty poor but that wasn't down to the staff not being friendly - it was down to them being really understaffed meaning from ordering to getting food and paying it took much longer to do anything - my server seemed really friendly considering he was rushed, he was serving tables and then in the kitchen, and having to answer phone calls - for me it's unacceptable that there was only one chef + one server who was working in a kitchen for the backlog, with a good 5-6 tables full. I did notice a few staff members who were on a good break for 30 minutes+ who didn't offer to help customers or do anything as it got busy - I appreciate if they're on their break but why was there more staff on break than working. The whole lack of staff really did make me think about walking out on multiple occasions with my food taking longer to arrive, as well as a delay in getting some water as the only waiter was serving other tables. I wasn't offered a lemonade sample which I always receive at an Ask branch, also down to it being understaffed (not really busy, but busy for the low staffing levels.) When my food did arrive, it tasted quite good, I ordered the pea and prosciutto risotto which came to £13.50 - a little pricey but ASK do have various offers with Meerkat Meals (buy any insurance package even one-day travel insurance in the UK for £1.01 and get a years free) or Tastecard which gives you two-for-one, they also offer a student discount which varies from 25 to 40% so there's never a need to pay full price. The risotto was much better than I had at a previous branch, it was seasoned perfectly and it didn't need any added pepper/seasoning, with a little fresh parmesan cheese sprinkled on top it was much better - it wouldn't have been my first choice of flavour combination for a risotto but they still managed to bring it out very well, the prosciutto was mostly crispy with a smoky taste but it was slightly chewy at times. Good quality food at competitive prices considering a large number of offers using third party memberships which are as low as £1 or the restaurant's own website/student discount, yet let down by staffing levels and speed of service - solid three-star rating.
