The drive to the restaurant was lovely and scenic, going down dark and winding country roads until suddenly we drive around a corner and The Devonshire Arms appeared! We'd got there a little early and we sat down by the bar for some drinks. The menu was displayed on a chalkboard by the seating area and it all looked yummy! The dining area was quite small but very nice and cosy. The kitchen was open and you could see the chefs chopping and cooking away which I quite liked. I chose the rabbit and pheasant terrine with grape chutney as my starter; it came with onion bread and the slice of terrine was huge! I really wanted to finish it, but I couldn't as there was no way I'd be have enough room for my main! For the main, I had venison steak served with new potatoes (usually served with mash which I couldn't have as it had milk/cream in it) and braised red cabbage. The steak was pink and cooked to perfection and the red cabbage was sweet but with a little tart edge to it. I didn't have a dessert but the rest of the party did - my boyfriend had a deconstructed banana cheesecake and his sister had a brownie (I overheard her saying it was the best brownie she'd ever tasted!). All of the staff were really nice, especially the lady who served us that night, she was really lovely and very attentive. The Devonshire Arms fully deserves it's awards and hope it gets more in the future. If you're ever around the Sheffield area and want to venture out of the city centre for some food make sure you come here. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect meal.

The tables downstairs are a little too close for my liking. We went upstairs and found a cute window table, overlooking the alley below. We started with a pot of tea and debated the large menu for a while. I opted for the Caspian breakfast and my husband ordered the pork pie with a side of chips (fries). The presentation on both was great. I wanted to love the food, but it was just okay. The Caspian breakfast was a waffle with sweet cream cheese, topped with smoked salmon, poached eggs, caviar eggs and sliced avocado. The waffle and poached egg were cooked perfectly. I didn't care for the sweet cream cheese and ended up taking that off. The avocado looked pretty, but tasted underripe. It also came with toast. My husbands pork pie was okay. It tasted like a summer sausage in a flaky pastry. It came with a side salad with Stilton cheese and walnuts, which was also just okay. The server was very friendly and prices were reasonable. If I lived here, I would definitely try again, but I would order different foods.

As a foreigner when you think of an English breakfast or brunch experience what often comes to mind…read moreis the fairy tale inspired tea and toast enjoyed in a quaint bed and breakfast, and unfortunately this dream is often shattered when you realize that Starbucks, Cafe Nero, and Pret have more or less taken over the wonderful world of breakfast. Fear not - Mrs. Bridges Tea Rooms has preserved the traditional quaintness of a B&B in a way that caters to anyone and everyone, and it's absolutely excellent. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Tucked away in a side alley, the location of Mrs. Bridges is as much a landmark as anything in Leicester, and once you step inside you'll understand why. The most comfortable of settings includes various tea rooms on two levels as well as an outdoor seating area that I was able to enjoy on what was a beautiful sunny Saturday morning. It was crowded at 1030, but I was still able to have a seat right away and service didn't lag. I can't stress enough how fantastic the atmosphere at Mrs. Bridges Tea Rooms is, and loved that even school age children seemed to really enjoy and appreciate it along with the expected adult crowd. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? £6.50 is a beautiful price for French toast with bacon and maple syrup with a pot of tea for an additional £1.85. As you can see in the picture my portion was hearty and I was more than satisfied at the end of the day with what would have easily cost me £12 in London. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? I'm not entirely sure whether the atmosphere or the fact that it was a beautiful day just made everything taste better, but my french toast was amazing even while being as simple as can be. There was nothing fancy here but there didn't need to be, and I noticed as I was sitting down that a steady stream of people were coming in for sandwiches to go that everyone was raving about (and kudos for having special sandwiches that rotate). There are some meals that you really can't even put a finger on with respect to what makes it so good, and this was one of those meals. Dual Stars Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Mrs. Bridges Tea Rooms is a well known Leicester establishment whose appeal could possibly be bottled and expanded, but for now it's a brilliant gem in the center of England that I'd gladly visit daily. Star Granted.

Out of the centre slightly, we easily got a table without a booking, the restaurant itself being quite expansive, with a good range of seating and plenty of space. Our round table was perfect for lunch, very sociable. There is also outdoor seating too, which would be lovely on Summer's night. A woodburner added much needed heat to the restaurant, but it was still a little chilly where we were sat, because our table was next the large glass entrance door. The Pointing Dog & Duck has a sizeable bar, with a good variety of beer and wine, but it was soft drinks all round, as most people were driving. There are separate lunch and dinner menus, both of which had a decent variety of classic and more unusual dishes. Going straight for the mains, there was a good selection of dishes like fish and chips, Steak Frites, and Caesar Salad. Between the five of us though we had a pizza topped with duck, Hoisin sauce and coriander, crisp, large and tasty; a mushroom and spinach rigatoni, probably the pick of the dishes, packed full of flavour, and a decent sized portion. Two of our party opted for the Hake fillet, with Chorizo and Cannellini beans, a hearty dish perfect for a winter's day. I went for the Pdog Bacon Cheeseburger, again a sizeable, tasty burger, with a mountain of fries, but maybe next I'll be more adventurous next time. One course and lots of talking later, we were all pretty much full, no room the intriguingly named 'Snicker's Mess', maybe next time. This is definitely a venue we will visiting again soon.

Owned by Matteo and Alyson, a family team, the pub specialises in Sardinian cuisine, which is executed to an exquisite standard. Speciality starters include Sardinian Cocoi: Courgette, Tomato And Pecorino Rosti served with Pickled Onion Chutney and the delightful Prosciutto, Melon, Mozzarella and Tomato Platter (The cheese is homemade by Matteo using real buffalo milk). All of the starters are around the £4-5 mark. Mains include Prickly Pear Glazed Pork Belly With Spam And Black Pudding, Apple And Cider Chutney at £9.50 and Roast Rack Of Lamb, Roasted Pear And Cannonau Wine Sauce at £11.50. Not just for the vegetarians, the menu offers an excellent Roast Butternut Squash, Fregola And Pecorino Cheese Crumble for £8.95. The prices are very reasonable and the standard of the food is second-to-none. Yet above even the wonderful food on offer, the Red Lion's well-deserved fame really comes from its cellar. Matteo maintains 5 guest ales, featuring options like Goldings, Nine Ladies Ale, Swift Nick (from the nearby Chatsworth estate) and the omnipresent standard-bearer of the real ale world, Jaipur. Weston's cider and perry is also on pump, in addition to the selection of bottled ciders available on request. The Red Lion is a friendly, welcoming establishment that offers the very best of Sardinian cuisine and British ale at extremely honest prices. The owners maintain their cellar to a very high standard and really understand the ethos of the real ale movement. It is perhaps unsurprising, then, that The Red Lion was recently awarded the 2010 trophy for CAMRA Pub of the Year. This comes in addition to a string of other food accolades including: Award Winning Home-Made Ricotta (Bakewell Show 2009/10), Silver Award for Novice Cheesemaker (International Cheese Awards 2010) and Silver Award Pecorino (Bakewell Show 2010). The Red Lion is rightly featured in this year's AA Good Food Guide and has also been voted in the top four pubs named 'Red Lion' out of some 900 in the UK. I have no hesitation in saying that this is currently my favourite pub in Britain.
