As it is the only cafe we have in the village, it provides a place to meet and catch up with friends over a cuppa or at lunch time. However there is also a prayer room in the basement, which you can visit on your own or you can ask for someone to pray with you. They also sell a small range of cards fo birthdays, Christmas, Easter etc. The café provides much needed jobs for local people with disabilities such as Downs Syndrome and also work experience for local high school students with special needs. The staff, both paid and volunteers, seem to have a never ending supply of patience. The food is good too!

The menu changes every few months, so there is always something new to try. You may need to book as it can often get very full. An evening at this restaurant provides an enjoyable meal with excellent service, and it really is a very friendly place, so it comes as no surprise to learn that it has been recommended in The Good Food Guide. Accessed up a short flight of stone steps at the side is a small, pleasant gallery which showcases the work of several local artists. Inside, the gallery extends over 3 floors, the top floor reached via a lovely wooden spiral staircase and it also includes the tastefully renovated basement. You will find lots of craft work, sculptures and ceramics as well as the paintings. As well as the normal displays, the gallery often holds special exhibitions which are well worth a visit.

It made for a good Instagram, however, yesterday we went to Blacker Hall Farm where we ordered afternoon tea - only to be treated to larger sandwiches, a giant scone each, and three unique delicious desserts. This far exceeded my expectations and also was quite a bit more tasty than Betty's. Would definitely visit again soon!

We ordered 5 full English breakfasts (the traditional!) and loved everything, especially the beans with toast and the mushrooms! It was beautiful in presentation and came with 4 mushrooms, 2 Cumberland sausages, 2 slices of ham, a fried egg, a hash brown, two tomatoes and a nice serving of baked beans. First stop was Matlock - cute little village, powerful river flowing though town, nice views all around. We wanted to have lunch but hadn't really seen anything and so we decided to head to Bakewell (about 20 minutes drive) when I noticed a classy, inviting, purple sign by the road "The Orangery". We quickly turned around and are so glad that we did! We had a really GREAT lunch and have already booked again for Christmas Eve when our daughter and new husband visit. It may sound odd but it used to be part of a very prestigious school for over a century - the most famous "Old Girl" was Richmal Crompton who wrote all the "William" books that I devoured as a kid. Now the whole complex is basically a old peoples home (Man are they lucky!!). So the lunchgoers were, on average, grey haired (but I am going that way too) - but it was fairly quiet in terms of lunchgoers and music (just the right volume - Christmas songs, Wham and many many more of the favorites. The restaurant drips class, the bistro also (full bar). A wide selection of offerings _ I seriously wanted the prawn curry but got lured into a Christmas special.
