I have been buying American antiques at Northeast Auctions for 25 years.There are so many things…read morethat I like about it, as a business, that I must corall my thoughts.But as I reflect, I realize that it pretty much all comes down to Ronnie Bourgeault, who is an extremely knowledgeable, energetic, verbose, serious, sometimes grumpy, generous, philanthropic and good hearted man. He is highly respected in the field for being one of/the most antiques-knowledgeable auctioneers, and is well known by and connected to all the major collectors, dealers and museums who have encountered him in the ~ 45 years he has been in the antiques business. Because of his national reputation, he is chosen to sell major collections from CA to NY., so as a buyer, I don't have to travel far to see and examine some of the best material out there. Bourgeault's headquarters is a landmark for 'downtown' Portsmouth, an elegant early 19th c. 3 story brick Federal mansion that is a cornerstone for this uniquely well preserved historic shipping port. Throughout his many years in Portsmouth, he has consciously and quietly purchased and restored a number of early buildings with shaky futures. That means alot to me. He is also an active donor and board member for both local and regional museums and historic organizations of national importance. Bourgeault and his loyal staff run a very smooth professional operation. His auctions are always well attended ; the August one that kicks off N.H.Antiques Week is often where you will see the premier collections being sold. Americana is Bourgeault's focus but his Asian sales are also highly regarded. Both printed and web catalogues are well organized , written, and photographed. My one warning is that if you are new to the auction world, you might want to start by attending other auctions that cater more to newbies by being a bit more user-friendly. In keeping with his 'no nonsense' approach, Bourgeault is probably the fastest auctioneer in New England (at least), often selling 100 lots per hour (where other auctioneers might sell 60-80 lots per hour.) That speed alone takes some getting used to ; there's little room for hesitation, or you may easily be left in the dust! The world of antiques and auctions is a fascinating one and bringing history into your life can be fun, educational and richly rewarding. If and when you decide to take on that goal, Northeast Auctions is a top notch business to work with.

Low and behold, I read about Seavey's in Portsmouth (with parking!) which apparently is in a new location. It is a light-filled factory building space but not overwhelming. It is set up so you want to walk around and try things out. Much of the furniture brings you back to the 50's. Some pieces are works of art! But many were beautiful but affordable. And made in this country! And it is locally owned! Which is what I wanted. Michael the owner is friendly and informed. And no pressure. He spent a lot of time with us trying to choose pieces for our limited space. We have swatches at home now to make decisions and look forward to returning to work with him. Maybe the categories on Yelp need to be switched up with furniture stores at the top so you don't miss going here first.

We needed a little upgrade as we had walmart blinds that looked like....well walmart blinds…read more Someone had suggested takking to Dave at bayside blinds so i reached out to him. He came over with samples, made suggestions and we said Yes! We had new blinds and cornish done for our first floor and just Wow! What a total upgrade. Sure they are expensive but the finish on the cornish and blinds are outstanding! We also had him add room darkening shades in our bedroom and man, thdd ex quality of sleep is noticeable. We have six really big wide 6 foot windows and added the top cornish plus two 3 foot wide normal windows and the entire job came in close to $5 grand. But the finished product added at least twice that to the value of our home. I usually don't spend anything like this but bayside blinds added such a great look to our home. Dave was pretty chill and such a nice guy and would not take final payment until the job was 100% completed. Can't recommend him enough.

We ordered our plantation shutters from Exciting Windows and had an excellent experience working…read morewith them. While we live in Boston and Exciting Windows is based in NH, Ed Hopkins arranged to come down to Boston with samples several times while we were trying to decide on styles. He was very professional and knowledgeable. He was also very careful in taking measurements and reviewed the order with us in detail to make sure all of our options were accurately reflected before it was transmitted to the manufacturer. Exciting Windows also had some attractive deferred financing offers, which we were able to take advantage of. The shutters are custom made so it takes several weeks for them to arrive, but Ed kept us apprised of the estimated arrival date. He worked with our schedule to set up an install date and the installation went very smoothly. Unfortunately some of the shutters were damaged in-transit from the manufacturer, but Ed had called us in advance as soon as he realized this and given us the option of having the handful of damaged shutters installed and then replacing them when the new ones arrived. This worked out great because we really wanted the privacy provided by the shutters in the meantime. The damaged shutters were replaced at not cost as quickly as they could be reproduced. A few months later, I discovered that one shutter had some damage to it that we hadn't noticed earlier. Ed came down to Boston to see how best to handle it and determined that it was best to replace it at no charge. The customer service has been exceptional and he really stands by his work. I highly recommend Exciting Windows as we were very pleased with the customer service, the competitive pricing, and the quality of the product. The shutters look fantastic and we get compliments on them regularly!
