When we were restoring our 1670s farmhouse and building new barns out of salvage parts Chris was such a help in finding the perfect pieces. The doors from the Old State House in Boston found new life in my craft barn, the soapstone sink fills with plants in our new/old potting shed, so many gem like pieces of hardware. His collections are so well curated and he is a walking encyclopedia (should I say google?) of antique architectural knowledge. Makes me wish we were restoring another home! Mr. McMahon is the owner of Architectural Salvage and the person you're most likely to meet when visiting the business. We found him on a recent visit to be not only less than helpful, but rude and demeaning when my female companion asked several questions about how to measure and fit a piece of small hardware. The proprietor actually seemed angry and was definitely very condescending. A customer's lack of knowledge or well-intentioned questions should never prompt a business owner's derision, especially in this type of business. This incident was truly bizarre. A store-owner laughing in the face of a customer? Wow... Although the temptation is to respond to Mr. McMahon's hostile and mean-spirited behavior in a similar fashion in this review, suffice it to say that, having read this, don't be surprised if you're met with the same attitude. This is not the first such experience I've had with the business. We'll never be back. read more

A recent visit to this shop turned out to be such a disappointment. First, because of the lack of help in the shop. We had to search for a helper. Once we finally found a guy he replied we had only been there 6 months and couldn't answer our question, then walked away. Ummm - The place was empty. He did not offer to get us another person or relay the question to anyone else. Next, they have another unheated building in the back which clearly has their lesser quality stuff. I dug through there for a while and stuff in the shelves I found an un-tagged light I liked. I was thinking maybe $50 or $75. It was a pendant which had no mounting post. I carried it in to Mr. Helpful. He then went into the office for a while a returned with price of $150 and also said the whole thing needs to be rewired. I said thanks please tell them I think that if it needs that much work than I think $100 seems like a fair price. Then a woman came out from the office to say that prices are non-negotiable. Well - the thing had no price tag to begin with and need to be fully re-wired. So she didn't budge, and the light stayed there. Last, I had visited there with a friend and her kids. That woman was SOO mean and rude to my friends little 7 yr old daughter. Near the front desk was a tiny sized saw horse - very cute. The little girl held it up to show her mother and that same mean, non-negotiating lady screamed out: "IT'S NOT FOR SALE!" (and " I'll GET YOU MY PRETTY, AND YOUR LITTLE DOG, TOO!") and the little girl then innocently asked: "Why?" - keeping in mind this is a SHOP and it was on a display table near the front desk / register - and the wicked witch answered: "Because it's MINE!" In summary, I will never give them a nickel and will not return. They are expensive, not helpful, not nice, not friendly, not accommodating, and I don't take posting a negative review lightly - at all. You get back what you put out there. Need Salvage New Englanders? ...drive up to Portland, Maine. Huge salvage place in the city- no more expensive than this and FRIENDLY! And Portland has great food too. read more

This place is one of a kind. There are very few other places like it that could be called local. It is an antique store for building materials. It's not the place to go if your looking for Nick knacks. My husband and I have bought a couple antique doors, corbels, barn wood for shelving as well as antique knobs. We have been here many times over the years looking for and purchasing various items while renovating our old house. Always fun to poke around and find treasures here. The only reason I'd give 4 stars is because of the limited hours and fact that many of the items are hard to see without moving stuff out of the way because everything is so packed in.The owner and his son have always been very gracious and helpful. Amazing inventory and great people. We spent almost an hour talking with the owner, who was patient and explained things in an easy to understand and non-condescending way. He was pleasant, professional and, frankly, one of the most personable people I've ever met. And, if you can walk around that massive barn and not be impressed, you truly are a knucklehead. We drove up from Mass to pick up 3 Windows we had seen the weekend before. We called the number as the sign on the door suggested and the owner said he would meet us. The Windows, upon closer inspection weren't in as good condition as we hoped so we offered a lower price. Instead of countering or saying "no, sorry" he began to degrade me as a little girl who didn't understand what value the old windows had. (Assuming of course that as a woman I couldn't possibly comprehend his mans world.) What could have matured into a consistent business association given out line of work ended in less than an hour. We will never return nor will we recommend any business or any of our clients to this place. read more

What a find this place is! Owner was very helpful and personable- honestly can't imagine him being grumpy as was in a previous review. Be prepared to sift thru things but that is what makes it fun- there is a lot of inventory. Only 4 stars because I went in November and it's in an old unheated barn...brrrrrrrr.
