It's a small stop but they have about 6 picnic tables. Plenty of choices at the vending machines. A few stalls but they're clean. Definitely would stop again in the area. Quiet, but as always stay aware of your surroundings

We spent a lot of time at this rest area, spent all day driving and decided to pull over to rest. After 12+ hours we are now just getting up to begin our trip. We didn't sleep the night before, so it was nice to catch up on some of the rest we need. This is a cozy little rest area, not many parking spots. It's more first come first serve. So beware of it. You can walk your dogs around, or have a picnic. For the vending machines, they do not take card, you'll need cash for them. It's a good thing we carry change with us!

It's just a rest area, so let's not go too nuts here, but I was very pleased with the cleanliness of this one.

So both Randy S. and I hit the head as they say (they are indoors in a very clean and lovely building) and ventured out. Randy wanted some diet pop. He got it out of the vending machine. We were about to run. Then I saw it. A Cafforia (http://www.automaticproducts.com/HTML/products/cafforia_main.html). Oh, I love these hot coffee vending machines that make hot chocolate and so forth. The swimming pool I went to when I was a kid had one of these and I was absolutely fascinated by it. So, I definitely had to indulge. But then came the question... what should I have? So many choices? To be accurate, the Cafforia comes with a multitude of products you can get for yourself, 13 in all. Everything from Cafe Latte to Expresso (I love that they spell it with an X). So, I narrowed my choices to something milky and sweet, because one never knows about the coffee in these things and it's best to have a buffer between you and potential burnt bitterness... I was either going to get: 1) Cafe Mocha - seemed promising, if basic 2) Cafe Vanile - about the same 3) French Vanilla - with which I had a hard time understanding the potential differences from #2 4) English Toffee - this was Randy S.'s choice from the get Okay, so I labored and labored over the decision. Which one to get? It offered to put sugar in the Mocha and Vanile, which I thought was strange, but could point that they aren't too sweet. But on the other hand, I've seen people pour sugar into coffee like they are trying to make fill in a lake, so you never know. Still, the French Vanilla and English Toffee could be sickeningly sweet and then I'd be pissed. Then it hit me: Get all 4! Brilliant idea really. I think they were like a buck a pop, so it's just like buying a latte at Starbucks, so whatever. And, then I'll have a definitive answer... so F it, I bought them all. First out was the English Toffee, Randy S.'s front runner. It was good. Sweet, but not "too sweet" by any means. Actually very yummy. And the coffee wasn't half bad! Especially considering my expectations Next was the Cafe Mocha (which had been my choice), which also wasn't bad. It wasn't very chocolately though, and not very sweet--which I actually view as quite an accomplishment in America, so kudos Cafforia! Next, the Cafe Vanile. Kind of like the Mocha, not too sweet, not too much vanilla. Just kind of a latte with some sugar. Still, given it came out of a machine in Mill Shoals, IL, not half bad. Last was the French Vanilla. I love that they call it French Vanilla, because there's no way that France's vanilla would contain about 300% of the sugar content of ours, but so be it. It was good! Kind of similar to the English Toffee. So, which one to take with me? I had to go English Toffee. Come on. When you get 4 espresso drinks out of a Cafforia in Mill Shoals, IL, and one is English Toffee, you've got to take it. I did. I left the others behind, sadly. What could I do? If I took them I would have had a pulse rate only known to very frightened rats and there is only one cup-holder in the Lexus anyway, so... Anyway, great place... clean, awesome, great Cafforia!

I did not have any need to go inside. This was a "park and take a nap" stop. The rest area has a Huck's for auto gas, a Pilot for trucks and a Godfather Express for both. The parking lot is level, it is lighted and I did not see a sign limiting how long you're allowed to stay. We were here about 90 minutes and no one bothered us before we pulled back onto the road to continue the journey. I've been to dozens, if not hundreds, of rest stops in my travels. This one is better than OK. [Review 279 of 2025 - 295 in Kentucky - 23842 overall]

These rest areas serve as important...well, rest areas for travelers and truckers. Those in the trucking industry say the for-profit truck stops off of many intersections are often full and sometimes come with baggage in the form of illicit drugs or illicit activity. There's also the pressure of paying for services even if you don't intend to walk in and use the facilities. With these rest areas being in fairly remote areas off of interstates, these also serve as important points so truckers can rest. Or travelers can switch drivers without having to do a Chinese Fire Drill on the interstate. The amenities here are your basic rest area stuff (federal law prohibits the sale of goods, though there is a carve out for vending machines). Restrooms are clean and drinking fountains are available if you need to refill your water bottle. There is a good amount of green space if you traveled with your dog and he's bouncing off the car walls and needs to stretch his legs. There are 2017 maps if you want to go retro or learn how to read a map. And there is an office for the attendant in what I assume is only occupied 9-5 Monday through Friday. Why did I take off one star? The bottled water cost $2. I know, I know...captive audience. But I can imagine buying in bulk the state of Indiana could get a slightly cheaper price if they tried.

The rooms are spacious and clean price was very reasonable, but in this location, I would expect that. I would imagine since it's only a few miles away from Holiday world that during the summer months, the price of hotels are probably higher here, there's a number of restaurants around Wendy's McDonald's Subway and CVS up on the corner. After calling and booking a block for our group a month in advance we were left with minimal communication and several different answers when calling to book/confirm rooms. Nobody had a real answer for us. One employee said we had 11 rooms blocked, another said we had 16 blocked but when calling to book/confirm we were told the hotel was sold out. Only 8 of us were able to book through the block, leaving others to be charged higher rates. They blamed the issues on the manager walking out/quitting but ultimately it was an issue that the new owner should never have let happen in the first place. Their refusal to work with our contract was a slap in the face. One if guests were only able to book for 2 nights and had to bunk with another family, claiming they were full for the night, meanwhile TWO rooms were ajar all night directly across from my room. The breakfast was put up early most days, the pool went from a beautiful blue to swamp green overnight. Overall it was clean (minus the ants thay were all iver our table), the staff was nice and it would probably be fine if you were just staying as an individual rather than a group. If you are lodging as a group I would definitely take my business elsewhere. Forgot to add they charged the wrong card, I booked with one card asking them to charge another card upon arrival. They agreed to but still charged my card I asked them to change. I have been waiting for management to call me back since Monday. Its now the following Sunday and still nothing.
