Let me just say, Mertz Heart & Soul was SO good that we went back two days in a row! And if you…read moreknow me, you know that's saying something.
We went as a colleague attending the National Funeral Directors Association conference , and everybody ordered something different, so we got to experience a little bit of everything.
First, the atmosphere! The decor is very eclectic and gives you that feeling of sitting in somebody's mama's or grandmother's kitchen. It's warm, comfortable, and inviting. The staff especially our server Daris
was extremely nice and welcoming, too. Another thing worth mentioning is their 97% sanitation rating. That's definitely a plus!
DAY ONE - Everybody had their own plate and their own opinion!
I ordered the Catfish and Shrimp Creole with macaroni and cheese and collard greens. Everything was hot, fresh, and seasoned really well. Now, let me tell you about those greens! They had fresh tomatoes and onions on top, and that was a first for me. But I absolutely loved it! That's something I'll definitely be doing from now on. Sometimes it's the little things that make a dish stand out.
My mentor ordered the Beef Ribs and Fried Catfish with red beans, yellow saffron rice, and collard greens. Those beef ribs were so tender they practically fell apart like silk! The catfish was cooked just right, and everything was hot and fresh. The yellow saffron rice was different from what we're used to, but it was delicious. The seasoning was especially impressive because she's salt-sensitive, and the food had plenty of flavor without being overly salty.
My boss went with the Special Smoked Pork Chop with collard greens and red beans and rice. His rating was a 10/10! The pork chop was well-seasoned, had a great smoky flavor, and was cooked perfectly. It wasn't dry or overcooked. He doesn't typically eat a lot of beans, but he really enjoyed the red beans and rice. He also liked that the greens had a little crunch without being gritty.
And let me not forget the cornbread! We all shared it, and it was fresh, fluffy, and served with honey butter. That combination was so good! Soft, warm cornbread with honey butter? Yes, please!
DAY TWO - Yes, We Went BACK!
The food was good enough to bring us right back the very next day. This time, I tried the Chicken and Dumplings with cabbage. I love being able to return to a restaurant and try something different instead of feeling like I only need to order the same thing again
Mertz Heart & Soul is doing something right. The food was cooked fresh, the seasoning was on point, and nothing we had was overcooked. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere felt like home, and everybody at the table enjoyed their meal.
I especially appreciate when you can go out to eat with family, order completely different things, and everybody has something good to say about their food.
We don't go back-to-back days to just anywhere, so that should tell you something!
Mertz Heart & Soul gets a 30/10 from us! We'll definitely be back!
