We contracted Martin to do the large scale job of renovating our home on Capitol Hill, DC. Martin was extremely unprofessional, constantly missing deadlines, asking for large amounts of extra money, working extremely slow and was unreachable for the entire month of December, not doing any work on the home and refusing to answer calls or texts. Martin also keeps a deplorable job site, and these conditions permanently damaged expensive finishes in our home, which must now be replaced (see photos of permanent wood stain spilled on marble counter and tile floor, as well as paint/compound on new hardwood floors). After another two weeks of no work being done and Martin avoiding phone calls, We finally decided to take the large financial loss, terminate his contract via text (which he never responded to) and hire a new contractor to finish the work he did not complete. Alex came to our house and gave us an estimate to repair our front steps and told us they would last a very long time. A few days later, his workers showed up, unannounced, asking what they needed to do. I told them I have no idea, and my husband is not home, and to coordinate a time with him. A few days later (on a Sunday), they showed up unannounced again! My husband was out again! They asked me to pick a paint color and I asked if that is included in the price we were quoted and they said they didn't know. As I was trying to figure that out, it came out that they don't think repairing the stairs is a good idea and they can't even guarantee they won't break again for even 3 days. I asked if it would be a lot more expensive to redo the whole thing and they said it would be exponentially more expensive. I told them we'll talk to Alex and get back to them. 30 minutes later, Alex calls my husband screaming at him! He told him that we shouldn't ask his contractors about prices and that he doesn't work that way and that we should find someone else to work with and hung up the phone on my husband! He was literally screaming at my husband on the phone. And then hung up on him. There are so many issues with our experience starting with the fact that the workers kept showing up without prior notice and asking a lot of questions as if they didn't know what they were supposed to be doing. And then of course the fact that he was trying to scam us into doing something that he knew might not even last the week. And then finally, calling my husband and screaming at him and hanging up on him because his workers were asking us a lot of questions?! It's just been an atrocious experience. I recommend avoiding him at all costs. UPDATE: Alex is now threatening my husband over text messages because of our review. We are just stating facts. He said we are inappropriate to contact him on a Sunday when it was his contractors who showed up at our doorstep, unannounced, on a Sunday, and we were just calling to clear things up with him because they had no idea what they were supposed to do and were asking me a lot of questions. He also accused us of trying to strike a deal with his subcontractors, something that didn't cross our minds for one second. We were just trying to figure out if the paint his contractors were making me choose was included in the estimate he provided us.

Alex was helpful and responsive in coming to my home, talking me through the process and promptly providing a quote. Lofft was not the cheapest estimate I received but based on my meeting with Alex and previous reviews, I decided to hire them for my work. Very happy with my decision. The project began and ended exactly on schedule. Eric and Freddie were easy to work with, dependable, did a fantastic job and kept the worksite clean during the project. I'm going to redo my master bath and will look to Lofft to do the project. I'd give them six stars if the system allowed.

He demolished our house and rug out the hole to pour a new foundation. He was also really nice to our little kids who were so interested in the whole process. He explained what was happening and showed them the machines. They were over the moon. Now his team is back to do the final dirt grading. His machines are already there and ready to go. I would work with him a thousand times over. I wish all jobs went as smoothly as this one has with him and his team.

We contacted Neal (the owner of Double K) to see if he had an opening to refinish the half bathroom…read morein our home. From the moment Neal came over to get an idea of what we wanted to the completion of the project it could not have gone smoother. Ralph (the project manager) and his crew did an excellent job. Ralph was more than happy to take the time to listen to our thoughts and was great to work with. Since Double K had done such a great job with the half bath we contacted Neal once again to completely gut our aging kitchen. As with the first renovation the process was flawless. He had great suppliers to work with Jack from Appliances Unlimited, Keith from Kitchens by Quality, and Bob from the Tile Shop. All were a pleasure to work with and took their time to listen to our ideas (although in most cases their ideas were better). Again, Ralph and his crew did a great job -- we are beyond happy. As Double K were redoing the kitchen we noticed a sag in the the ceiling of our carport. We had noticed it before and it was continually getting worse. We asked Neal if he would take a look. He provided an estimate and they had it done (I believe in a day). Long story short. Finding a great contractor with a crew you can completely trust is a difficult a task. I can firmly say -- that task is not an issue for us anymore. Double K has very much proven that we needn't look any further.

They also repaired a section of our kitchen ceiling that had been damaged by a water leak, and the finished result looks as good as new. I kid you not we reached out to around 20 contractors in the area but Chris' responsiveness during our project scoping/estimate period couldn't be matched. He was able to work within our budget and brought some awesome ideas that we hadn't considered or thought weren't possible (example: our new wet bar). Throughout the entire process Chris was only a phone call, txt, or email away. He was on-sight each day to give the team instructions and review the work that was happening that day. He also made sure to include myself and my husband in these morning reviews to ensure it was in line with the vision we'd laid out. I'm absolutely blown away by the results - I actually cannot believe this is our basement! It turned out amazing! We already have another job lined up with Chris to do some work on the exterior of the house. I would highly recommend Chris and Hanes On Homes for your renovation needs!

2nd review. 3 years…read moreago I left a glowing review about Colonial. Chas Kubrick is AMAZING!! They were professional, the construction team did a fabulous job and I think I only found 3 nails. I purchased the upgraded roof and upgrade to beautiful Hardie siding. Fast forward and I'm leaving a 1 star review. Why? Because they only warranty their work product for 2 years a little but important fact that must have been in the contract and I missed. It certainly wasn't spoken. I recall reviewing the Hardie as well as the CertainTeed Roof warranties but nothing about a 2 year warranty from Colonial. Given that information would I have chosen a different company? Of course! I have 2 major problems, a leak inside of my sunroom as well as a problem with the siding which has destroyed a window and French door. A technician came out for the door and explained the when the siding was installed on the deck, they failed to do the flashing. And well, you can see in results in the pictures. When contractors come to provide estimates without missing a beat, each says I shouldn't be having these problems after 4 years and that Colonial should repair. I explain the 2 year clause and they laugh. So, here we are, either file a claim with the roof and siding manufacturers, pay out of pocket OR file a claim with my insurance company. Each option sucks because I went with a company which doesn't provide an actual warranty for their work product. Don't be me, be better.
