I went to the acupuncture part of the store. The black woman receptionist was rude and condescending the few times that I went. That was as enough to make me not return. This was my first visit to Nam Bac Hang. The store looked clean and well organized, so I purchased about $100 worth of American ginseng. However, when a female employee packaged my order, she took the ginseng to the back instead of packing it in front of me. After I got home, I noticed the ginseng appeared to contain pieces of noticeably different quality. I do not have proof that anything was switched, but the experience left me with a very negative impression. I would recommend that customers carefully check their ginseng and ask for it to be packaged in front of them. Unfortunately, I will not be purchasing ginseng from Nam Bac Hang again. read more

Oversized glass jars line the shelves with medicinal herbs, specialty roots, dried flowers, dehydrated fish bellies and healing teas. Each one promising to treat, heal or cure. From common colds and allergies to skin sensitivities and cancer prevention. I appreciate the explanations and history. I grabbed some tea, I can't mess that up. For those interested in a more comprehensive approach, the doctor is right next door to the shop. Offering non-traditional methods of healing such as acupuncture, cupping, massage and more. This is the place to go for raw Asian herbs, ginseng root and a host of other remedies. They have at least over 30 bags of specialty teas for different ailments of your body. I did purchase some Chinese Ginseng , which is hard to find in NC. I have been taking this herb since the early 70's. they can also prescribe or mix up a specific herbal remedy for you. Many of the supplements boxes and bottles are in Chinese. Go to your translation app and put on camera , frame in the words and it will translate it to English. When we were there they were very busy with customers asking for this and that. I don't speak Chinese, but I love hearing the language spoken. Be advised in purchasing out of the jar herbs, you have to have a knowledge of what they do and how to prepare them. read more

I used to visit the store pretty much every weekend many years ago. They have just about everything. I recently visited and spent $130, but one of the things I did not like was one of the employees or owner (woman) followed us around the store the entire time we were there. It was incredibly uncomfortable and I feel like it was racial profiling in a sense because we are African-American. We came in there and purchased quite a few items, but both of us picked up on it. I've been visiting the Acupuncture Healing Center next door and when Dr. Long suggested I supplement my treatments with herbs, I went over to Nam Bac Hang to pick up my herbal tea prescription from the owner Yuge. Nam Bac Hang carries hundreds of herbs on site. It was amazing to see so many on display. Herbal teas are personalized based on your current state. Each package of prescribed herbs is to be steeped in boiling water and consumed. One package is typically a days' worth of tea and costs about $13.50/package as of November 21. You don't need to have acupuncture for a tea prescription. On the Acupuncture Healing Center's website, you can self-online schedule a consultation which is roughly $30 which is then followed up with a tea prescription (paid separately). Each herb has an intended use, and these guys as are gurus when it comes to figuring out which herbs are best paired to help heal your body. I've noticed positive changes within days of trying the teas and I would highly recommend them if you're seeking an alternative approach to medicine. Lastly, parking is spotty on Cermak. I find it easier to park in the Chinatown parking lot. It's a longer walk but if you request for validation in store the prices are $2 cheaper versus if you were to pay the meter. read more

I don't even know where to begin, I had an unknown rash all over my arms and back for over a month. The doctor, the dermatologist, recommended, prednisone and antibiotics. None of it worked. It was horribly itchy and visually unappealing. I went into the store and showed my rash to the knowledgeable sales person; She recommended the liver detox. A week later I no longer have a rash and itching has subsided. This establishment is clean, very well organized, and the staff is knowledgeable. They also have an acupuncturist next-door. I come here with my friend. This place is really clean, nice and comfortable. Once you walk in, you could smell this pleasant soothing herbal aroma. The service is excellent. However, the last two times I've been to this shop, a woman has 1) tried to upsell me on something I did not need and 2) most disturbing, placed her hand on my body and suggested (ahem bully) me into buying a weight loss tea. I drove a long way to get there and see a novice acupunturist that do needling right on the pain spots. I have had acupuncture sessions in the past and this is the worst experience I encountered. HELLO KITTY I am not really sure what this store sells. As we walked by we were greeted by Mr Tiger, who was a beautiful kitty. He drew us into the store like a tractor beam. The staff was really nice in here considering they knew we probably weren't going to buy anything. My little one played with Mr. Tiger and had a blast. Cats are like a mobile petting zoo for kids. We did look around the store. I noticed a very large selection of teas. So if you're an exotic tea drinker this may be the place for you. The back wall here was perfect for one of those creepy movies where you need to make an antidote to end Zombie Apocalypse. There were jars of herbs, seeds, eye of newt...I may be exaggerating on that last one but with my luck they do probably have it in stock. The staff seemed to consist of a Mom, Dad & son. Dad kind of hung out in the chair in the back not talking to anyone. The son was sitting at the counter. He was sarcastic funny and I like that. The Mom was the leader. After a few minutes the Mom threw some work related tasks at the son. He multitasked and was back joking with me. Since this store was probably the Asian version GNC my wife asked for a herb that reduces stress he pulled out a bottle from under the counter. What? He then told me that it was only 15 pills per day. I told him that taking 15 pills a day would actually cause my stress levels to go higher. Why can't they make one larger pill instead of 15 small ones? It just seems logical and less stressful. I vetoed the purchase because no one should take that many pills a day of a product that has no English written on it. Just my perspective. After a little bit of hanging in the store it was time to go. The little one said goodbye to Mr. Tiger who had just set himself up in a nice comfy box of candy. We said our goodbyes to the staff. I've been coming here for the past few months to purchase my herbs and I haven't been happier with the service I've been receiving so far and my results. I've haven't felt this good in many many years and I'm glad I went the natural route. I've been meaning to write a review, so here goes..... The place is in Chinatown right on Cermak, a few doors east of the Jaslin Hotel/Starbucks. There is street parking for $2/hr on Cermak or there is a parking lot next to the red line a block away. As you walk in, you are greeted with the heavy aroma of Chinese herbs. They have pretty much anything you need for any type of ailment, from hair treatments to toe treatments and for all your organs in between. The guy behind the desk is Yuge, he is super friendly and extremely knowledgeable about everything in the store. I recommend going next door to the acupuncture clinic, that they also own, to have a prescription of herbs written up for you or you won't know what to get. Once you get it, they (Yuge) will instruct you as to how to cook/ boil your herbs to make a tea and will tell you how often to drink it. A consult next door will cost you $25 and usually takes walk ins, but appts are definitely recommended so you don't have to wait too long. Each herbal tea bag will run you $8-10. The ceramic pot that they sell to cook the herbs in will run you $15-20. They also have a pill form of the herbs too if you don't have time to boil them, but I've learned boiling them is the better way to go. They are not "cash only" like most establishments in Chinatown. They do accept credit cards. With so many herbal stores in Chinatown, it can be overwhelming to pick one. I'm glad my friend recommended this place to me. It'll forever be my herb spot :) read more

This acupunturist is no longer in Chinatown. They do have an herb shop in Chinatown. They charge $20 for a "consultation" to prepare herbs, $9 for the herbs. The doctor, on Michigan Ave charges $25 for initial consultation; $75 for treatment. They were not helpful in the shop and the dr. told me I didn't need treatment when I called. Don't bother going if you're not Asian or don't speak the language. What a bunch of cranky people. No stars for you!!!! read more

I ventured down to Chinatown based on the reviews here, but I can't help but feel disappointed. I had a consultation with the doctor. Didn't find out that was going to be $20 until the end of my visit. My exam took three times as long as it should have because the doctor kept stopping to talk to other people and to place a lunch order. He determined that I needed herbs that amounted to almost $10 a day and I would need to take this for a long time. $10 a day/ 30 days in a month...not doable. He also said I needed a special clay pot to cook the herbs in, which is understandable, but the price changed when I complained about the total and since nothing that I bought had a price tag on it, I wonder if I was being charged what he thought I'd be willing to pay. Lastly, there is an older gentleman who works there who only speaks Chinese and when an English-speaking acupuncturist came in, he made a few comments that were obviously about her and some of the other patrons laughed. You don't have to speak the language to know when you're being made fun of. This is not the place to go if you don't know what you need or want. Be sure to ask for Dr. Hoi. He is nothing short of a miracle worker. He has cured every one of my disorders and ailments, even after no doctor was able to help me. I have been there for depression, anxiety, sinus infections, skin disorders, you name it. He can treat you. Getting evaluated there is a foreign experience if you're not used to it. You sit in a corner of the pharmacy, he reads your pulse and jots down a bunch of stuff in Chinese. A Day At Nam Bac Hang! I needed help with my overall health and especially my thyroid gland. I have known Long Ngoc Huynh for 25 years and found him after many years on FB. After reading the good reviews, I called seeking cost of acupuncture treatment for anxiety and insomnia issues I've been experiencing. The guy answered the phone with enthusiasm and told me the cost and suggested that I stop in, so that he could recommend some over the counter herbs that could help me with my issues and also save me money by not getting the acupuncture today. He was very pleasant and helpful when I arrived. He recommended Tea Pills he recommended (Tranquilex $3 and Xiao Yao Wan $8) along with some Green Tea and Detox Supplements. I took the pills, worked out for a few hours, went grocery shopping and now I'm up late doing some office work. He recommended that I pop the Tranquilex when I start to feel anxious. I called again, another gentleman told me it was shipped out Thursday and may arrive on Friday. My wife had a hard cyst on her breast. She had so much pain that a gentle touch caused her excruciating pain. I traveled to Nam Bac Hang from the Northwest suburbs to get Ganodurma Lucidum Spores. There were 30 packets in the package. I was told that she should take 1 packet a day until the box is gone. After the 17th day, the cyst was completely gone. She took the entire box.
