Large pizza half shahi paneer half butter chicken

The Indian pizza was very tasty and they have a lot of great flavor options on the menu. Service was pleasantly fast, especially considering they just opened. I'll be back to try the dishes on the non-pizza menu!

The original plan was to grab some lunch items at Whole Foods, but who doesn't want to try a new restaurant?! Walking into the restaurant, it's a little unclear if you order the counter and they bring you food or if you're seated and you order at the table. We quickly figured out that your order at the counter and then grab one of the tables and they will bring you your order. I found the restaurant to be unkept, and most of the tables that did not have customers sitting at them were super dirty. The tables hadn't been cleaned from the previous customer/customers. We had already ordered and it was that quick mental conversation of are we expected to clean the table so that we can dine there or what. Thankfully, a bus boy appeared, and he didn't seem overly eager to want to clean the table that we were standing at but instead wanted to clean one that someone was dining at. It was kind of odd. He took a couple of swipes at the table and it really just removed the food that someone had dropped all over the table. Just not a comforting feeling when you know that you'll be dining in that same spot. Our food came out fairly quickly, and I was super excited to have a good meal. We ordered the lunch special, which included a lentil/garbanzo, bean side, CTM ( chicken, tikka masala), rice, and naan. We ordered one mango lassi to share because we figured it was easier to try it, then order too much. You can always order more, right?! The mango lassi was very underwhelming. It locked through mango flavor, and that hint of tanginess. I just felt like I was drinking warm mango juice. I definitely have had better. With the lunch plate, we upgraded the naan to the cheese naan. I love carbs like anyone else does, but I found this to be basically bread that someone had put curry flavor in with a couple of cubes of cheese. So basically curry powdered bread. Yuck. The CTM, I found the chicken to be very sparse in terms of the portion size, and the chicken was very rubbery. It was overcooked, and I specifically had asked for little to no spice. Apparently that request was ignored. The lentil and garbanzo beans were tasty, but the garbanzo beans were undercooked, incredibly hard, and the flavor profile was really weird. It couldn't decide if it was supposed to be spicy, spicy, and salty, or something in between. The rice was OK. It had far too much fenugreek in it, and again the flavor profile, even combined with the CTM just was a little offputting. The guy behind the counter was fairly friendly, but it wasn't that warm and inviting friendliness. Is this a place I would go back to? No, not at all The one thing that I really enjoyed was the artwork on the walls.

The walls had artwork of people in scenic backgrounds. We ordered veggie pakora, spicy butter chicken, lamb paneer, fried veggie momo, chicken chow mein, rice, and garlic naan. Most of the food was good, except for the momo and the chow mein. We didn't like the sauce on the momo or the thickness of the wrapper. The chow mein used spaghetti-like noodles and tasted just okay.

Since I was on my own, I decided to get some Indian. Taj is pretty close to my place so delivery was quick. I can't recall if they were doing happy hour specials on DD at the time or if I had some kind of credit, but I ended up getting a $16.60 discount. With tax, tip, fees, and a $1.14 credit, this meal ended up being just under $20. Not bad for a solo lunch with leftovers. The tikka masala was nice and creamy. I like my curry with heat, so found myself wishing it was spicier. The naan were both soft and chewy. I love garlic, so liked that one slightly more. The samosas were soft on the inside and crispy outside. I found the mint chutney super salty which took away the refreshing aspect of it. Convenient and fast indian delivery if in Outer Richmond. Plus, the price was right. REVIEW #3945

The check-in process was extremely confusing, there were no clear signs indicating where dine-in guests should wait or check in. We stood in what looked like the line, only to realize later that other parties had somehow gone ahead of us and were seated first. When we tried to clarify things with the host, instead of helping, he was very rude and dismissive. He abruptly said something along the lines of, "There's only one line, can you make it quick? What's your party size?" He wasn't listening to us at all and made no effort to acknowledge how chaotic and unclear the system was. The interaction felt hostile and unwelcoming. We ended up leaving immediately because the entire experience felt unpleasant before we even got seated. For a restaurant in San Francisco, especially one representing Indian hospitality, I really expect a more organized and respectful front-of-house experience. Clear signage, a proper check-in system, and basic courtesy from hosts would go a long way.

Starting off with what was good though, their mango lassi is tasty and momo chili dumplings are so flavorful with great texture. I would say they excel at their doughs in general because their naan was also great (especially the onion stuffed naan). Their Sewa/kale chaat was also passable (but would love if the kale pieces were bigger so that beans don't cause it to be as soggy after a while). That being said, it seems like they could do a little better with packing a flavor punch for their other dishes. Their shrimp tandoori was good but nothing to write home about. Lamb biriyani was also good but could've been stronger in flavor. Chicken tikka masala seemed like it was lacking something (but not sure what...), and the artichoke pakora didn't taste like artichoke? Thought it was still decent... I also think their tamarind chutney could be a bit thicker in consistency (maybe like that of the mango lassi), the mint chutney was nice.
