    Completed Job

Got several estimates to address a leaking roof on my Brooklyn townhome. It's been patched many times over the years, but heavy rains once again caused water leakage down all 3-floors. As I live in CA, had to coordinate repairs over email & phone with my tenants and contractors. Originally I was going to use another outfit, but Arbi sounded more conscientious about his work, and so I went with ND Remodeling. Only time will tell if the job was done right, but from the pictures he sent, I think I made the right choice.

    Perfect gutter for draining

N.D. Remodeling Inc. -- a father and son duo -- did a spectacular and stunning job on the full replacement of our roof, both men being completely responsible within the safety parameters in relation to COVID-19. They were prompt, highly productive, and timely, finishing the entire job in accordance to projected time of completion. They are kind, thoughtful, respectful, and genuinely enthusiastic about their craftsmanship. All potential clients would be remiss not to hire them.

Lucas answered while on an existing job. He was very honest saying he can't drop by to make an assessment. Knowing the importance of the situation, he said he'll have his father drop by to take a look. The father (was it Joe?) came by as promised and saw that the previous roofer didn't put flashing around a portion of the chimney. He gave a couple of possible fixes and I picked the more expensive one. He gave me a break on price if i went with the more expensive fix which i appreciated. Before showing up for the work due to budgeting issues i changed to the lower price solution. He didn't have any problems with this change. He and his other son (not Lucas) came on the day as promised. The funny thing was I didn't know they were there until i heard banging outside! They ripped some of the old roof tiles, installed new flashing and overlay them with some leftover tiles I had laying around. They also caulked around other parts of the chimney. They cleaned up their mess. There were aome storms afterwards and no leak! Thx to Lucas for knowing the importance of the problem and having your father and brother fit me into their schedule. And thx to father and son (was it Joe and Ezekiel?!) for fixing the leak! I would definitely consider them to put in a new roof when the time comes!

They arrived 3 hours later to do an inspection. David gave me an extremely informative breakdown of what the damage was and why it was leaking. He showed me the various types of roof types and shingle manufactures and the pros and cons of each. Although I knew he makes his money off commission and wanted to close the deal, I felt no pressure to sign anything. My girlfriend and I slept on it before calling them back the next day to finalize. They ordered the materials the same day. We were notified of all updates including when the materials would arrive, the process for installing a new roof, and what hours we should expect them to be working. Super stoked about the results although I was not happy with the color of the flashing. David sent out a worker to paint it for us the next day, free of charge. Excellent service....

They began working the very next day, redoing sections that had been done sloppily free of charge and explaining what they were doing each step of the way. What was supposed to take another 2-3 days was able to be finished by SmartTech in 1 day after the foreman asked the guys to stay a bit longer to finish the job. Great experience, professional, and are definitely my guys for any future roofing jobs.

Frank (the owner, I think) was nice and responsive, and sent a team to fix it for a fee. So far so good. After that, the leak got slightly better never stopped, and soon got bad again. Multiple calls, visits, usually by John, multiple $ spent, for well over a year, but the leak persisted, and I was losing my mind. So, finally I gave up on Roman and hired Abbasi Roofing - one visit, 3 guys, done. It turns out, the the outside part of the chimney stack, that Roman supposedly fixed, had large cracks between bricks that weren't filled with the sealant and totally exposed. And since this was on the side of the chimney stack, facing away from my house, it was the hardest to get to, wasn't visible from the ground, and John who came alone would not be able to reach there without the help of another person. I must say that Roman Roofing is less expensive than Abbasi, but that does not do me any good if they keep coming back, keep charging money, and the problem still persists. Based on that painful experience, I would not recommend.

I cannot recommend Skyward Roofing…read more We contracted for a complicated job last winter, involving the replacement of the roof, rebuilding the chimney and restoring the dormers on a landmarked townhouse in NYC. The job was complicated due to having so many components, but Robert assured me he could handle it. Their bid was similar to others, but I felt at the time that the comprehensiveness of their scope of work justified the choice. On the plus side, his workers were fast and did a thorough job removing the many layers of the old roof. The mason he hired to replace the chimney also did a good job, using old bricks to replicate the look of the original chimney. The problem was Skyward's workers: a fast and eager bunch of Ecuadorans who may be good at standard-issue NYC roofing but were definitely not equipped to deal with an old building. The first problem came up with the dormers. I had asked Skyward to uncover the aluminum cladding so we could see what shape they were in. To my surprise, they were largely intact, and I asked Robert to hold off on working on the dormers while I consulted with Landmarks to determine how to best proceed. Two days later I was horrified to find that the crew had demolished the 200 year old carpentry and started to nail plywood over the framing. Robert was apologetic, but blamed it on "miscommunication". Unfortunately, "fast and loose" was how things proceeded from there. The crew cut holes for new skylights, but didn't bother to center them between the joists, which are exposed in the interior. I guess it was easier to just build a frame against one joist, resulting in all the skylights being off-center. The frames were often not level with the roofline, just slapped in fast, meaning that the interior finish carpenters had to trim or even rebuild the 2x6s from the inside to get a level surface for the trim. There were further problems with the workers cutting corners and not following the drawings for the rebuilt dormers. I could overlook all of this if not for the big problem: the roofing tiles were incorrectly installed. I'd ordered composite shingles, plastic shingles designed to look like wood shakes, similar to the composite slate shingles historic houses often use. The installation guide specified a minimum 3/16" gap between shingles, recommended 3/8" to allow for expansion in hot weather. The warranty would be voided if the installation wasn't correct. These instructions were even cast into the underside of the shingles themselves, in English and Spanish! Nevertheless Skyward's crew butted each shingle up tightly against the next. This was in the winter when it was cold, so one can imagine what happened when the weather turned hot: the shingles expanded and started to curl and buckle. A lot. By early June there was over a 1" gap buckling between rows in various parts of the roof, plenty of room for rain to run onto the sheathing beneath the shingles. Robert always said that if there was a problem, they'd be there to fix it. The first night after they'd initially finished we had a hard rain and water streamed into the house in 2 places. The next day Skyward showed up to work on the roof, saying that the underlayment hadn't been properly sealed. This happened in a 3rd spot later in the month, which didn't give me a great deal of confidence in their work. By June, large sections of the roof tiles were seriously buckling in the heat. I determined that the shingles had been improperly installed. I could clearly see from my dormers that each shingle was tightly set against the next. A contractor friend verified that this was the case throughout the entire roof. As usual Robert was quick to show up to "correct" the problem: a single worker was going to take out and reinstall only in the areas that had buckled. I told him that wasn't good enough, as all the shingles had been improperly installed. If they weren't buckling now, they'd certainly buckle later. I asked him to remove them all and reinstall them according the manufacturer's instructions. "I'm not doing that" was his response. I told him in that case, to leave. I then hired an experienced general contractor who removed all the shingles and reinstalled them properly, replacing the ones that were too warped to flatten out. This was costly, around $14,000 plus $12,000 for the cost of reinstalling the scaffolding. As I said, Skyward's workers were very fast, which could work out for some jobs that are very routine. But in my case it meant one bad decision after another without consulting me, in order to get the job done as rapidly as possible. Most crucially this was a disaster in not paying attention to the installation instructions, resulting in work that had to be completely redone, at my expense.
