The food here is just wonderful! Delicous! They sometimes have gluten-free bread and I am so disappointed when they don't but I still love this restaurant. They use really good quality ingredients. Be prepared for slow service. They know most of their clients and so they chat. But then, they will chat with you too - it's like going to lunch with Aunt Bee in Mayberry! A small family owned business that has been in business forever and is located right down town. One of the few hold outs that give people a reason to spend money down town. Their breakfast crowd is alway an interesting mix of local workers and business owners who are usually happy to have a conversation, and the staff are easy and worthwhile to get to know. OMG! Myrtle's Place is a hole in the wall kind of place; according to the locals. The place itself has been in existence since 1936 but the current owner has been there over 40 years and she is a jewel. I would go as far as to say her, Natalie ( who was our server) and the rest of the staff are just as friendly and welcoming as Debbie. We came here as suggested by a family member and enjoyed our meals. The fried pork with eggs served with fluffy biscuit and white gravy was delicious and the liver and onions meal was good just would have enjoyed more onions with the liver. We came back for the food, yes, but we also came back for the excellent service. Stopped here on the way through Poplar Bluff based on other reviews. Hubs and I both got the hashbrown scramble and pancakes. Pancakes were a great vanilla flavor, fluffy, and as big as your head. Hashbrown scramble was good too, with tomatoes, peppers, and cheese. Coffee was good and refills kept coming. Cream served in a cold metal creamer. Definitely a local spot, as many who were there seemed like regulars. You do get a choice of smoking or nonsmoking, we sat in nonsmoking and I couldn't smell any smoke. Bathroom was clean. The primary reason this place gets one star: They allow smoking in half of the restaurant!! Perhaps I'm spoiled by our smoke-free Iowa restaurants, but come on... The food itself here is fine, especially for the price. It's simple and works well for groups. The team was attentive and ready with refills, accommodating of special requests, etc., as needed. You have got to be kidding me I love hole in the wall diners but sometimes they are just horrible. The pancakes are hard and dry The extras are put on the pancakes not in the batter. I ordered their lunch special which was a grill chicken with bacon strips. My husband ordered fried chicken. Both tasted like pre-cooked frozen TV dinners. Small mom and pop operation. We always hit this place when we're in Poplar Bluff. We usually try to play our visit to Poplar Bluff to fall on Tuesdays. Thats when they serve chicken n dumplins. Only place I've had better dumplins than Myrtles was from my familys hands. Cracker Barrel makes an 'ok' emergency dumplins. Myrtles is better though. Think Cracker Barrel type food but without the hype or decor. Also, imagine a fraction of the price. Yup... expect to pay like $5-6 for a blue plate special. Drawback is that they're not open very late. They close sometime in the afternoon. I will warn you. Its very much a locals type of place. They might look at you kinda odd being a newcomer, but be patient with them. They'll feed ya good! read more
