I've found a new-to-me yoga studio and cant love it enough! Here's why: -very relaxed and un-intimidating atmosphere (part of a garage downtown across from the Stutz building) -the first two classes are free which offers a perfect opportunity to really get a feel for the studio and instructors (and get hooked!) -they offer hiphop yoga on Fridays -fun yoga events like brunch and yoga with The Garden Table catered in -free lockers/keys -all sorts of goodies in the bathroom for showering and sampling -I have thoroughly enjoyed all three instructors I've encountered thus far - I especially enjoyed Katie's oil "rub down" at the end - my neck was tingling for the next hour (ahhh! Practice Indie is more than a place to practice yoga, it's a community of people who want you to be your best self. Since joining, I've grown so much deeper in my yoga practice and mental clarity. Every instructor brings incredible energy and skill to each class. The instructors make modifications for you no matter your skill level and offer adjustments with your consent to help you reach further. As a bonus, there's always sage or incense burning which helps you zone out when the vinyasa gets a little intense so you can just focus on your breath. Also-- sometimes there are fun, special treats like free tea samples or a community clean up project that help bring members closer and give you more reasons to be thankful for the community. I've been a member since January and I couldn't imagine going anywhere else! read more

Practice Indie is amazing. I can't overstate that enough. Every time I walk into this studio, I feel so comfortable and accepted. What I love most about Practice Indie is the blend of tradition with more unique things like hip hop music. Which coincidently, hip hop yoga at noon, with Brittany, on Fridays is my FAVORITE class. They have a DIY glitter station for when you need a little extra sparkle in your life and they have free tea! I just love how this studio preaches self-care. Becoming a member is one the greatest things I have done to care for myself in a long while. When you walk into the studio, there is a check in desk where one of the lovely yoga instructors is seated to greet you. There are cubbies for your shoes, keys, and whatever else needs held onto while you're in class. There are two yoga rooms one upstairs and one downstairs. The inside of the studios are beautiful. They are spacious and even when the classes are full they do not feel stuff or claustrophobic. The teachers often burn incenses which just adds to the whole relaxing and calming ambiance. The classes are on level systems. Meaning they have "yoga for newbies" and go all the way up to level 3 classes. These teaches are really good at meeting you where you are in your practice and helping you get to where you want to be. Another super cool class they offer is the aerial yoga. Yes, the yoga where you hang from the ceiling! I have not yet had a chance to try these classes out but I definitely will be! Overall, I 100% believe there is something here for everyone. From the beginners classes, to the competitive napping, and hip-hop yoga, I find peace and joy every time I am here! read more

I was initially looking for exercise I could do while recovering from a frozen shoulder. I had No yoga experience but all the instructors were so helpful and class members even moved their mat so I could be near the wall to help with balance. It is a wonderful environment where I can honor my body's limits and strengths and feel no shame. Practice Indie has kick-started my journey into working on both my physical and mental well being. I've practiced yoga here and there over the years- a new student sign up discount month at a studio here, a studio there, an online video or two. I stumbled into Practice Indie through a recommendation of a friend. It had been a long time since I'd been on a mat, in a class, and, honestly, it had been a long time since I had done any work on myself physically or mentally. So I was intimidated and kind of embarrassed. I was out of practice, out of shape, overweight, and trapped in negative thought patterns about my body, my capabilities, and I felt like I wouldn't belong and I wouldn't fit in. A friend from work who also teaches there, Erin, gently encouraged me to give it a try. I started by signing up for the Foundations of Yoga program with the amazing Brittany. That was a great opportunity to get some one on one that helped give me not only confidence to attend the classes but a framework about the what and the why to yoga that I'd never had before. It was a really lovely thing to do for myself, and Brittany was a great teacher, encourager, and support system. But with this team of teachers and accepting community, even my boyfriend, my friends and my coworkers I wrangled into coming to classes with me who also hadn't been to a class in a long time, or at all, were at ease. Practice Indie does a great job making their classes accessible. It's clear in their descriptions what the classes are and what level each class is at. Even more challenging classes, the teachers offer modifications to accommodate your level of practice or injuries. And as teachers introduce poses that may initially look like something I can't do, they also show the baby steps to get there- how modifications and prop work can work with you. There's never any judgement and I've become softer with myself and patient and also much more confident in what I can achieve. Practice Indie keeps the core fundamentals and philosophies of yoga present in the studio and in all their classes. And if you'd like to explore the history and philosophy of yoga, they also provide coursework for that and regular meditation classes, too. I'm writing this amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, and Practice Indie has, by the mandate of the state of Indiana and for the safety of all of its staff, teachers, students, and community at large, had to shut their in person classes down. But wow... They've come together to keep the community alive and are continuing to offer regular live streamed classes at normal times that then are just up and available to follow whenever, for the community at large. They've got an online group page for all their members, and also have available scheduled phone calls and check ins for members, too. They're constantly seeking feedback and working so hard to provide whatever our yoga community needs during this crazy, uncertain time. Practice Indie has become my studio and my community. And whether you're at square one or just ready to come back after a hiatus or you're just ready for a change, I recommend coming here. read more

Attached to the Naptown Crossfit, it has a garage for beautiful summer days to let some fresh air in. Shannon is my favorite instructor as she adjusts the hell out of you and incorporates new and exciting flows. This place had me at hip-hop yoga. I didn't know that was a thing, but my interest was definitely piqued. I can't remember how I stumbled across Practice Indie, but I am super duper glad I did. Seriously, I adore this place. No reservation was required, so I just dropped in for the Hip-Hop yoga class at Noon. Upon arrival I was warmly greeted by Jessie, given a waiver to sign, then I was good to go. The first two classes are free. After the freebies, I believe the classes are $15 each. I stepped into the yoga studio. It was adorable. Faux wood floors, motivational quotes displayed, and more. It was even better when the stringing lights were turned on. Such a peaceful ambiance. I met the instructor Samantha who was so nice and personable. I immediately felt welcomed and comfortable. She did warn that some of the music might contain "f bombs." Oh well. I was ready! The class was about an hour and 15 minutes. Oh, what a workout! Although this is only the second yoga class I've taken in my life, I made it through the class. Whew! Samantha did a great job modifying the workout to fit the needs of a beginner, such as myself, to some of the more advanced folks in class. She was also very motivating and walked around helping as needed. Sweat was dripping from my face, but I enjoyed this class so much. I bent and twisted my body in ways I never thought. It hurt so good! The music actually became secondary. I was so focused on the poses and breathing that at points I didn't really notice. Although there were several times I was bouncing along with Biggie Smalls, 2Pac, and J. Cole. I would like to recommend that they incorporate more hip-hop artist such a Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, etc. You won't hear them much on the radio, but so much of their music is amazing and even positive, which would add to the positive energy of the class. Two hours later, I am feeling incredible! I can't wait for my next visit! read more

Practice Indie is a cool spot. Seriously, that's how I would describe it. COOL. The owner and teachers are cool, the space is cool, practices are coooool. I've attended a few practices here with my best friend who calls Practice Indie home. The practices I have gone to were challenging and a good mix of skill levels. Shannon, the owner, does an awesome job of keeping he practices tuned for beginner to advanced. Space is pretty big and be prepared to sweat! I love the incorporation of music and it's usually pretty funky- which I dig. Can be loud towards the back of the classroom, so get there early if you aren't into a jammin practice. If I were to ever jump ship to Indy, Practice Indie would be my yoga home! read more

You can catch a restorative class at night (and sleep like a baby after), sunrise at 6/:30 am, a flow that focuses on athletes, special classes for holidays, and my personal favorite- Friday's HipHop yoga (yoga flow+hip hop music, yes please!) I love going to Practice Indie at 6:30 am on Fridays for hip-hop yoga! Shannon, the instructor, is full of positive energy and it's extremely contagious. The class is fun, challenging, and accessible to all levels of yogis. And the music? It's the bomb! I mean doing yoga to hip-hop music? It's genius! AND, look at the pictures of this studio! I was in town for work, and had a few hours to kill so I decided to look up a yoga class. I picked Practice Indie because it was within walking distance of my hotel, had a class that fit my schedule, and had no mention of being "hot" yoga (although I hear they do that, too, it's not my style at all.) When I got to the studio, I was blown away by how cute it was. It was like a namaste pinterest board, but IRL - and not annoyingly so. As soon as I walked in, Ifelt at ease, and the instructor checking me in was so nice and made sure to introduce herself to help me feel at home. At the end of the class, I ended up talking to the owner and another student in my class for a while, and they were so welcoming and nice. I didn't feel like an outsider in a class full of "regulars" at all. The class itself was also great - it was a really good middle of the day stretcher that got the blood flowing and was challenging, but didn't feel like it was trying too hard. It helped me feel a little more normal during work travel. Oh, and the best part? I bought a shirt that says "Gnomaste" with a picture of a gnome and I can't wait to wear it at home and tell about my awesome experience and Practice Indie. read more

Practice Indie is an excepting and nurturing studio. I've never felt like I was less than because I modify my poses bc I'm new to the practice of yoga. All of instructors are caring and knowledgeable about the practice of yoga. This is hands down the best yoga studio in Indy! The highly non- intimidating atmosphere makes yoga accessible to anyone. The folks are super welcoming and a community vibe is intrinsic to this studio. I went to my first yoga class at practice indie and it was great. I went again this morning and was just as impressed. The teacher was great and I am in love with the space. I love that they used an old garage and the space was converted beautifully. "You do you Yoga" has always been my favorite mantra as a new yogi. Whether you want to throw your legs up in a headstand or chill in child's pose the entire hour, Practice Indie is the place to be. All the instructors I have worked with have been friendly, open, and welcoming. It also seems like one of the more reasonably priced studios in Indianapolis (10 class pack $100), which is a big deal for my college budget. It is definitely worth the investment. They also have donation yoga on Sunday that supports various local charities, why not bend for a cause? There's mats for you to use, essential oils to coat yourself in, and a "leave one take one" library of books. Practice Indie Yoga is an amazing studio with amazing teachers, lead by the wonderful owner, Shannon. Shannon is that special kind of yoga teacher. First, she's wonderfully talented, giving you a great model to follow and inspiring goals to achieve. Second, Shannon is thoughtful and meaningful in her comments, reflections, and guided mindfulness. So many of her mantras bring on an aha moment and improve my life, like helping me with letting go to the things that are dragging me down or realizing that I can't do everything, even if we are capable of doing anything. And third, she's just f*ing fun. Her classes are welcoming, entertaining, and great for all levels of yogis. Beginners, and advanced students alike, are always reminded that the motto is "you do you" and encouraged to make the practice exactly what they need. Practice Indie Yoga keeps me sane and balanced, and I know it is adding years to my life. Stress kills y'all! I am so thankful to have Shannon and Practice Indie to help me counterbalance the mental and physical stresses of modern life and working a desk job. Take a class, you won't regret it! Other stuff - They offer two free trial classes. No reservations required. There is a parking lot, usually always enough space, but can get crowded due to the fitness classes that are on the other side of the building (NapTown SWIFT). Yoga classes usually have less than 10 people and are super intimate and personalized. The best part is the shoulder adjustment and micromassage at the end of class. I'd go back for that alone. Seriously, if you've never tried yoga this is a great place to learn. Shannon is thorough and precise in her explanations, and her movement flows are always so logical and natural that it's easy to follow along. read more
