I've found a new-to-me yoga studio and cant love it enough! Here's why: -very relaxed and un-intimidating atmosphere (part of a garage downtown across from the Stutz building) -the first two classes are free which offers a perfect opportunity to really get a feel for the studio and instructors (and get hooked!) -they offer hiphop yoga on Fridays -fun yoga events like brunch and yoga with The Garden Table catered in -free lockers/keys -all sorts of goodies in the bathroom for showering and sampling -I have thoroughly enjoyed all three instructors I've encountered thus far - I especially enjoyed Katie's oil "rub down" at the end - my neck was tingling for the next hour (ahhh! I need you now as I type from this crunched up plane seat, Katie!)

I've been practicing with Practice Indie for over 4 years and love these people. The instructors, fellow yogis, and entire environment are so welcoming, encouraging, and enriching. Whether you're a newbie, a forever-yogi, that person that wants to revisit yoga, or someone just looking to incorporate yoga into their overall fitness regimen you'll find a class that fits your needs. I'm so thankful to have found a place like this in Indy & hope it brings as much joy to others as it has to me over the years. Classes & packages are affordable and include yoga-only or hybrids packages in conjunction with Naptown Fitness programs including CrossFit & SWIFT (Sweat With Indy For Time). A variety of yoga styles are offered, in addition to hip-hop yoga & aerial yoga. Events & programs are regularly scheduled and can be viewed on their social media pages. *Give yourself permission to be yourself.*

If you are looking for a very accepting yoga studio then look no further! Have expanded my practice here over the last year. I was going to swift which is a sister gym at naptown fitness but have quickly fallen in love with the diversity in yoga classes. My favorite class currently is the arial yoga class.

Love this space! Went for my first class here tonight with Purvi. She brings the good energy and light hearted stuff that just feels good after a long work day, ya know?? Love the vibe of this old garage turned yoga space / crossfit / swift gym. Most of the classes are great for beginners to advanced. Drop-in class is $13. Twinkle lights and the dim room and savasana. I'm about it

Love it! Artwork in the bathroom.

This place had me at hip-hop yoga. I didn't know that was a thing, but my interest was definitely piqued. I can't remember how I stumbled across Practice Indie, but I am super duper glad I did. Seriously, I adore this place. No reservation was required, so I just dropped in for the Hip-Hop yoga class at Noon. Upon arrival I was warmly greeted by Jessie, given a waiver to sign, then I was good to go. The first two classes are free. After the freebies, I believe the classes are $15 each. I stepped into the yoga studio. It was adorable. Faux wood floors, motivational quotes displayed, and more. It was even better when the stringing lights were turned on. Such a peaceful ambiance. I met the instructor Samantha who was so nice and personable. I immediately felt welcomed and comfortable. She did warn that some of the music might contain "f bombs." Oh well. I was ready! The class was about an hour and 15 minutes. Oh, what a workout! Although this is only the second yoga class I've taken in my life, I made it through the class. Whew! Samantha did a great job modifying the workout to fit the needs of a beginner, such as myself, to some of the more advanced folks in class. She was also very motivating and walked around helping as needed. Sweat was dripping from my face, but I enjoyed this class so much. I bent and twisted my body in ways I never thought. It hurt so good! The music actually became secondary. I was so focused on the poses and breathing that at points I didn't really notice. Although there were several times I was bouncing along with Biggie Smalls, 2Pac, and J. Cole. I would like to recommend that they incorporate more hip-hop artist such a Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, etc. You won't hear them much on the radio, but so much of their music is amazing and even positive, which would add to the positive energy of the class. Two hours later, I am feeling incredible! I can't wait for my next visit!

The community at this studio is great. It's the studio where I started practicing yoga and now, I am a teacher :)

Make sure to bring a mat, towel, and water. They have available mats and towels for you to use. Such a great experience and the staff! I roll up at a rebellious 7:36 PM, since class started at 7:30, only to find the door locked up like they were hiding national secrets inside. Two women behind the counter looked at each other, then at me, like I was a raccoon trying to break into their trash cans. One slowly came over, cracked the door open just enough so that her body had enough room, she stood at the door and said, "For safety reasons, we can't let anyone in after 5 minutes." Mind you there is an entire lobby and boutique that I could have been invited into. I blinked. "Safety reasons?" She explained it was because of "the weights." Ma'am, it's Pilates, not a WWE SmackDown. If a stray 3-pound dumbbell is all that stands between me and bodily harm, maybe you should consider issuing helmets. I mentioned it was my first time. She gave me a pity "awww" and told me to come back Saturday. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town, but even if I wasn't, I wouldn't return. They treated me like a Jehovah's Witness at a front door: cracked entrance, fake smile, no eye contact. Girl, I'm not here to sell salvation. I just want to stretch. Also, tiny detail, but I'm 98 percent sure it's illegal to deadbolt the door of an open establishment. If the hot room gets a little too hot and catches fire, how exactly are the Pilates faithful escaping? Through interpretive dance? If they had simply welcomed me in, explained their policies like normal humans, and offered to help me reschedule, I'd probably be writing a very different review. Instead, I got passive aggressive doorkeeper energy. As someone who is literally a news personality, it took everything in me not to blast them on social media. But I try to wield my sword wisely. So here we are. On Yelp.

Invoke has been such a blessing throughout this second pregnancy. Between the reformer classes and prenatal yoga, I feel physically better (and more prepared) than I did for my first kiddo.  I especially want to thank Rachel Weigler for the modifications she offers in her reformer classes. She is very knowledgeable in what to avoid/modifications, etc. for pregnant women and it's clear that other pregnant women have taken note as I often find that I am not the only pregnant individual in the intimate four person classes.  I'm two weeks out from baby #2 and grateful to know that "on the other side" there will be monthly "mama and me" yoga classes and postnatal pilates classes to get me back on track and feeling strong. I already have a note in the calendar to sign up once it gets closer. ;) Feeling incredibly lucky to have this studio walking distance from home in the Old Northside. I have been practicing yoga religiously for almost 18 months, but I had never experienced an outdoor yoga class. It was time! I'm so glad that my first outdoor yoga class was with Invoke, because the instructor who led us (Jill) was so amazing. She challenged us and encouraged us, and she also adjusted my poses a couple of times and it helped me a lot. One of the adjustments during savasana helped me to relax deeper and release the tension I was holding in my shoulders that I didn't even realize was there. The outdoor yoga class was held at the marina in Eagle Creek. It was a beautiful spot to gaze out onto the water and into the trees as we breathed deeply and moved our bodies. Be prepared to deal with some goose poop and ant hills, though. But that's part of being outdoors, right? We, the people with yoga mats, are invading the space of animals and wildlife -- we are the interlopers here. If you take an outdoor class, I suggest bringing a big towel to lay on the ground underneath your mat. It will help. After this class, I now want to practice outdoors more. It was so nice to be in a plank pose and see a roly poly wander near my mat, and gaze at the clouds while in sky archer pose. I also want to visit Invoke again (maybe during one of their indoor classes) because I felt so welcomed and left super smiley and centered.

Then, Lisa started leading us in a slow flow, and I felt like I was at home. This is an amazing yoga studio, and I'm so glad it exists here in Indianapolis. I visited Cityoga for the first time on a particularly auspicious day. It was International Day of Yoga AND the official first full day of summer! Lisa led us in a sun-related flow, with lots of sun salutations, of course. I love Lisa's style of teaching. As we were settling on our mats at the beginning of class, she started with a very brief explanation of the origin of yoga, in the area that is now India, and shared her thanks that it had made its way all the way around the globe. I really appreciated that she took the time to mention this. All throughout the class, the ideas she shared and the words she said really had an impact on me, and a couple of times, I got a little teary! I haven't cried during a yoga class since my mom died almost two years ago. I wish I could remember exactly the things she said, but I was in the present moment and lost in the flow, and her words just washed over me and settled into the cracks. I left feeling like something had shifted in me. I almost felt high! All of this sounds like hyperbole, but it's true. I've been practicing yoga daily for two years, and overall for three years, and my class at Cityoga was the best yoga class I've experienced yet! It's a bit of a drive for me, but I'm already plotting ways to make sure I fit a Cityoga class or two into my schedule each month. It is worth the drive and effort to practice in this warm and welcoming studio, and with teachers like Lisa.

I am happy to say that 8 students were present at Shane Photography for the first session of Inner Peace Yoga's new Tuesday evening Beginner I yoga class - including myself and hubby. Inner Peace Yoga owners Carol and Charles Crenshaw teach in the Himalayan tradition, which is what I first experienced years ago and still one of my favorite methods of practice. While vinyasa flow, power yoga and hot yoga seem to be all the rage these days - and they certainly serve a great many individuals - I prefer a slower pace where postures are held and/or repeated. I also like to incorporate breathwork and meditation into my practice. That is why I enjoyed IPY's new Carmel class so much - it really reminded me of what made me interested in yoga in the first place - when I left I felt at peace, more focused and de-stressed. Normally a late-nighter, I was ready for bed at 10:30 and slept like a log. I also tend to favor IPY's approach of building one's practice over time In other words, if you're totally new to yoga, you begin at the beginning and establish a foundation of yoga postures, breathing awareness and technique and movement. Then, as you feel comfortable and your instructor thinks you are ready, you progress to more challenging classes. In this way, you are less likely to get injured or simply become disillusioned with your practice. Plus, you really learn about yoga from the inside-out, in my opinion, which makes it much more possible to develop a home practice. Another bonus: IPY offers classes, workshops and other events on complementary subjects such as meditation, ayurveda, chanting and the like, as well as retreats. These are particularly helpful if you are more interested in expanding your yoga practice beyond postures on the mat :-)
