From what I can tell, the Austin Yoga Institute is the only yoga school in the city that has an Iyengar curriculum. So if you want to focus your yoga on the Iyengar method, this is definitely the place for you. I've taken classes with three different teachers at this point. They all have different personalities and teaching styles, but I enjoyed working with all of them. Each is well-trained, personable, and able to help you work around any chronic problems you might have. In addition, they all seem to be willing to help each other out, meaning that if a teacher can't make it that day due to illness or emergency, another teacher is able to step in and help out. Since I have a day job, I attend the 6 p.m. class on Mondays and Wednesdays. These classes have never had more than 10 peope in them. The daytime and weekend classes might be fuller, but I can't be sure. Another perk to the studio is that it offers teacher training in the Iyengar method. So if you want to be an Iyengar instructor, this is probably your best option. And for complete beginners to yoga, there is an 8-week series designed for people with no yoga experience. So whether you're just starting out, or you're looking to become a teacher, Austin Yoga Institute has something for you. I will warn you that the school's fees are pretty expensive. However, there are discounts for students and for people who practice green transportation practices (taking the bus, riding a bike). And if you're really hard up for money, the teachers are willing to work with you. So if you really want to take yoga classes but find the cost prohibitive, I encourage you to talk to one of the teachers to find out about alternative accomodations.

In other words, you probably won't get hurt by some Bozo with a weekend yoga teacher certification here. Its a great place to get the basics down before venturing out to other flavors. Founder Peggy Kelley has been at this stuff around forty years and has been selfless in the early promotion of yoga in Austin. I have had classes with about half of the teachers here and all were very good. If I lived South of the river, this would be my regular yoga haunt! I've been 100 times and it's always different. They also have TRX classes which are actually a very very good workout. Instructors are all good. Don't be scared of parking! They validate for the garage right behind. Sometimes mid day it's full. I have parked in 15 minute parking and been fine. Street parking is good for early morning classes.

I am a old guy, broken down from a great life of being a musician,…read moremotorcycle wrecks, race car wrecks, skiing disasters, playing Army for many years and basically burned the candle at five ends. Add the tum tum, and you would think this is the last place I would end up. The different orthopedic doctors and Physical Therapists all basically said go to something like this and see what makes you hurt :-( . I called and talked to the business and it turns out that they have many different types of classes, including rehab and recovery. They would make adjustments for me if needed. The business was spotless and organized to a T. Then came the class. The instructor, Jennifer, was quite charming as was the staff. The attendees were all ages, shapes, sizes, and I was not the only man there. Jennifer said she could adjust the instruction if needed due to all my damage and I said no way, go full blast and if I had problems I would adjust myself. So, full of confidence, I started immediately with the class which was a "grace", or something like that, for newbies. Jennifer was enthusiastic, and kept the tempo going. I had some problems at first following the instructions as I was new to this, but with the mirrors and her assistants, I started getting the idea. Yeah! I heard "shake it off and rest" but I could never see where "rest" was in the picture. I realized that if I totally stopped I would never be able to start up again, so I did the best I could. Then I learned to hate the words "bar and barre". When you are told to grab or lean on the bar, you are really going to get it. All in all, it was wonderful. Jennifer or one of her assistants would come and help with advice, and there was only 2 moves I could not do. When we were finally finished, my muscles were shaking so bad from lack of use in the past few years, I asked my wife to drive home, much to her glee. Fast forward 1 day and I am worn out and sore, but in a good way. I am definitely more flexible, I don't have pain where I used to have pain, so this event probably saved me a lot of money to doctors and therapists as I know now where to target and to what extent I can handle and still live.

The instructor greeted me by name and asked if I had any injuries or needed any modifications, then walked me over to the equipment and explained that I needed two sets of free weights to add to the other set up equipment (a mat, a lower back mat, ball and resistance band). It was all women in the class, and I can't be sure but i get the feeling it's like 90%+ female most of the time. There's also a spin studio in the space. For barre devotees, I think it's a solid choice and very conveniently located. Also there's ample parking out front and in the parking garage just underneath. All in all, it was a good midday workout.

As Yelper Hannah G perfectly put it, "With how saturated the yoga market is, it was hard for me to find a place that I connected with". For me, that place has turned out to be Sukha Yoga. Sure, Mark (co-founder) has no idea who I am--I've only taken his class once--but that single experience left a lasting impression. I attended his Saturday Bhakti Service: Flow, Meditation, and Sound, an 80 min class that collaborates an intentional vinyasa flow practice with mindfulness. For "busy" folks who struggle to slow down or are close-minded, this class (and maybe even this style of practice) might not be for you. As Mark's fists say, he certainly is a "GURU." He guides his class with intention and power, while also subtly weaving in his musical talents, playing several instruments and even singing, in a way that feels genuine and somehow not cringe. The class is structured, yet somehow freeing. Mark allows you to set your own pace during sun salutations, which feels like pure magic. The experience made me feel grounded and safe. I could have cried with how deeply content my soul felt. BONUS: If you love dogs, you'll probably find Mark's extremely well behaved mini doodle, Mai, practicing her down dog. If you don't, there's a door... NOTE: For first timers, it's located next door to Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co--easy to miss if you're not looking for it.

Finding the studio and parking was a bit difficult, but once I was inside it felt warm and inviting. There was a small waiting area with some seating which led right to the studio itself. Not huge, but cozy. The class started on time and the instructor took us through a well sequenced flow. It was powerful but far from overwhelming. The studio was supposed to be heated, but it's possible I was not near enough to an infrared light which kept me from getting a sweat in. After the class was over, the instructor invited me to join a small group for a Barton Springs plunge. Really appreciated the community building outside of class! Thanks again and I'll look forward to returning and trying out some other class styles!

I'm one that needs a lot of variety to keep on track with working out. I went to an 8:30 AM slow flow class this morning. I'm not a morning person, but I knew with how stiff and in pain I'd been feeling the past week, I needed to go to yoga earlier in my day. This class was perfect! The instructor was so kind and warm. Cued each movement and was just such a soothing presence. The class was the perfect size...everyone had enough space to do the movements and not feel packed in. You could tell the class was made up of all stages of life, yoga abilities, and body types... definitely a loving and inclusive space. Bonus: they have a coffee shop inside their beautiful lobby area. And yes, I rewarded myself with a coffee after a great morning yoga session. They have other cute gifts for sale through the yoga studio and also some really cute swag for sale. This space was previously called Mantra Yoga Collective. From looking at their website... I believe it's still the same ownership, they just have changed their name to The Retreat.

The inside space is also really nice. It's a bit out of the way for me so I don't go regularly but when I can go, it feels like a quick trip to Sedona, especially given the hill as the backdrop.
