Western Washington County--and particularly the outer reaches of Portland's suburbs--are a great place to learn the difference between a dive bar and a hick bar. The place across the road that's changed its branding from diversity to something more boot-scoot friendly while trading in local bands for line dancing and country cosplay? Yep, that's a hick bar and it's trying really hard to give you a country-fried boutique next door and a drunk-country playlist to convince you of its bona fides. A dive bar, especially a great one, doesn't have to make much of an effort to convince you of its merits. My Place looks absolutely frightening from the outside, to the point that if it wasn't located it Forest Grove, I'd have it pegged as a mob joint. There are two small, high windows, one sign (that isn't for the lottery), and a solid wooden door that looks as if it exists to repel battering rams. And inside? It looks like a place that was designed to ride out Prohibition. Your decor's mostly the bar, woodwork, and vintage coolers, along with some pool tables and lottery machines. It's lit largely by Christmas lights and distributor-supplied neon. It's an old card room turned lottery bar. But amid the cheap pours of Pabst and Widmer and cans of Hamm's and Keystone is a bar menu that puts a town full of far newer competitors to shame. We're what, two breweries in at the other place across the street and nobody on this block has managed a burger better than My Place? This grill and this recipe must be guarded with as many lives as we can throw at them, because this thing rivals OG Stanich's. Meanwhile, between the steak special, the reuben, and the fact that you can get a club sandwich here at just about any hour--and get everything at insanely reasonable cost--I don't know why I keep putting myself though the aggravation of crossing the street to its neighbors. Let the folks in those new tract homes up the way eyeball this place in fear. Let that NO MINORS sign keep diverting their kids to the brewery and food cart of the moment. Every time I walk in here, I feel like I've found Forest Grove's best secret--and if it means sitting with a bunch of over 40s and not particularly caring what the area's parents think about school politics or NASCAR, that's fine with me. read more

Friendly neighborhood"Nothin' Fancy" bar with great burgers among other things. Their drinks and beers are priced as low as you'll find anywhere. It's like happy hour prices from open to close. They recently added touch tunes which is a nice bonus. Almost every Thursday night from approximately 4pm to 8 or 9 is Ribeye night cooked over real charcoal with a big baked potato or side and a salad with garlic toast. Steaks are hand-cut and good size. The price has varied lately but you're not going to get any thing near it for that price anywhere else that I know of.. Just moved to town under Covid19 times. We were on a mission to get a take out burger and fries and Mickey D's was not the answer! Came here on a recommendation from our friends. We were not disappointed. Great burgers with all the fixings! Juicy burgers and house cut fries with homemade fry sauce. The lady that was cooking was super nice and the value was amazing. "Soup nazi Sally" (a la Seinfeld) is just a mad, mad genius when it comes to her from scratch soup recipes. How does *my place continue to have customers? As a 15 year veteran of the food service industry, and, business owner, I cannot stand outright lack of care for patrons. I went in for food and left no sense of gratitude. The bartender with the heart tattoo was all but unhappy I even entered the place. The food was horrible...anf the service was pitiful. You havr failed in you responsibility to those who pay your bills lady. You tip was unearned and undeserved. To the owner...stop being "old school" as your bar keep calls you and coke into the age where you can make a respectable living in a redpectable location. I was fairly new to Forest Grove and thought I checked out the video poker. I walked in and noticed the bartender gave me a dirty look the minute I walked in. I had never encountered such rude customer service behavior. If I was the owner I fired them all and replaced them new employees. Just needed to give my local view to counter what the dude from California thought of this place (I'm guessing based on one visit). My Place is a local bar. It is a dive. However, the drinks are reasonably priced, the bartenders are the nicest people you've ever met, the clientele ranges from those "old" 40-somethings that he mentioned, to young whipper-snappers from Pacific University (2 blocks away), and some that are even older than 40! Outrageous that they get out isn't it???? The food is delish, the jukebox is great (and often pre-paid by the bartender) and there are a couple of nice pool tables too. read more

If your looking for an easy going atmosphere with great, I mean awesome food, stop in here. You don't get a loyal following like My Place has by being "iffy" or "Okay"... Their regulars are smart and full of character... My favorite on the menu is the chicken club. This bad boy is served on a soft hoagie roll. The Chicken is always juicy, and that can be hard to find at some places. Then add the melted swiss cheese, bacon, tomatoes and ohhhh my, I'm in heaven. They have Taco Monday...2 tacos of one dollar! I get 4 and am stuffed to the brim before heading back to work, which is strange because I will also dine on the large juicy burgers and somehow manage to put that away, to the amazement of some of the other people hanging around. The french fries are to fries as rain is to Oregon, as in they have a old school hand operated machine that cuts the fresh potatoes. They then soak in a wonderful bath of salt water while waiting for the deep fryer. Yes! Real food! In the summertime you can find My Place by following the smell of that awesome aroma that is BBQ on Wednesday evening. You'll always be able to find the teriyaki chicken thighs, homemade coleslaw, potato salad and baked beans. They alternate between brisket and pulled pork as well. And new-ish but equally delicious is the steak night. That's Thursday. House cut rib eye steaks, either BBQ'ed or on the flat top inside. They do this in the rain! My husband & I ate here on Oct 13 Sunday early evening and not only was the food the worst I've had in recent memory it was prepared and served by an employee whom I later overheard saying she was sick. Well of course, shortly thereafter I became sick with a persistent and painful illness. Aside from that the place is a dive bar with a grill which is not always a bad thing but the place is very cluttered with random stuff sitting around sort of like a storage locker that needs to be cleaned. Specifically my philly cheesesteak sandwich was so overcook the beef was like leather and the onion, pepper, cheese was one big slimy greasy, revolting blob. I'm pretty angry about loosing 2 weeks of my life (I have another chronic illness that causes viruses to be especially difficult for me) to what amounts to inconsideration for my well being. For some people an illness like this could fatal depending on the fragility of their health. read more
