Crazy Insane. My insurance Aetna states Kathleen Nichols is in Network and ACCEPTING new patients,…read moreso I called to book an appt. Today is 04/17/26, I was told that next Available Appt. is February 2027 - Almost an entire year away! Of course I absolutely do not believe this. So now I have an urgent medical issue and have to go to the Emergency Room because my crappy insurance In Network plan has crazy in network doctors that are not available. INSANE! Probably bit the bullet on this one, because any doctor that would advise her staff to treat New Patients like this is gotta be a horrible uncaring medical person.

I switched to Dr. Kathleen Nichols at La Loma Pediatrics and Internal Medicine in 2023 after…read morelosing my previous primary care physician since my children were already established with her for pediatrics. Unfortunately, my experience has been extremely disappointing. Let me preface this by saying that I have a spinal cord injury so I have a disability that needs attention regularly. Dr. Nichols refused to complete my intermittent FMLA paperwork, which is essential for protecting my employment if I need to miss work due to my disability. This lack of support made an already stressful situation even harder. She also declined to continue managing my antidepressant medication, stating that my mental health concerns were "too complicated." I sat in her office sobbing and begging for support-- hoping for compassion, communication, and understanding from her, but instead felt dismissed and unsupported. She is INTERNAL MEDICINE, which means that she should specialize in treating patients like me. I would not recommend Dr. Nichols if you are looking for a doctor who takes the time to understand and advocate for patients with underlying medical or mental health needs.

I am so sad to have to find a new doctor but we can't keep waiting a week when our kids are sick. But, what I have discovered is that this is because each of the doctors and the PA are extremely thorough. With smaller children, though, extended wait times can be difficult. If you can stand the wait, their attention to detail always wins me over. They primarily treat my three children, but recently, I had a terrible bout of a bacterial stomach bug. At first, Mr. Dr. Maitra (this is what my kids and I call them, Mr. or Mrs. Dr. Maitra!) thought I was having an appendicitis attack, and after his assessment , referred me immediately to an emergency room. We even received a call from his office to check that we had gone to the hospital! The ER did not find appendicitis, and sent me home with directions to stay hydrated and take an anti-diarrheal med if my pain and discomfort continued the next day. UGH. I was worse the next day, and again, I received a call from the Maitras' office , following up on my ER visit, and encouraging me to check back in with Mr. Dr. Maitra. I returned the following day, looking worse, and still presenting with extreme pain, so Mr. Dr. Maitra ordered stool cultures. And, he pointed out NOT to take the anti-diarrheal meds because certain stomach bugs will be worsened by the meds! And NOT to drink Gatorade as it is filled with too much sugar which increases the dehydration. That was the case, let me tell you. When Mr. Dr. Maitra called to give me the results of my stool culture, it was a great relief that he could prescribe an antibiotic. He read the diagnosis and details of the bacterial infection to me, and it was amazing how it exactly described what I'd been through. I am very appreciative of his thorough approach to my diagnosis!

The quality of his vitamins and products are top-notch, and since I have trouble absorbing most vitamins, I rely on these infusions at least twice a month. Beyond that, Yuriy has gone above and beyond for my children, who have been different kinds of sick at different times. He is available when the pediatrician is not, be it after hours or on a Sunday. When I reached out the first time with my youngest son, Yuriy set up a tele health appointment within hours, quickly assessing the situation and calling in anti-nausea meds for him. With my other son, he was over to check him out, swab for flu, etc. and answered or responded ASAP when I called. He even set up a mobile chest X-ray to rule out pneumonia--within 30 minutes of the call, the tech was at my door. So impressed--and so grateful! Yuriy is not only highly qualified and knowledgeable, but he is also incredibly caring and responsive. He makes himself available when you need him, and having access to this level of care from the comfort of your own home is invaluable. I recommend Yuriy to everyone, he's truly the best. If you want to be prescribed the wrong medication which you're allergic to for your thyroid , then…read morewait on hold for 45 min for the office staff to tell you they'll send the dr. A message about it and then proceed to send the prescription you're allergic to, to your pharmacy, for you to then have to call the pharmacy and ask to switch it and them tell you because YOU waited so long (haha) they don't have it in even though you're out, then this is the place for you! Do you like being gaslit by your doctor while they have med students in the office listening to your medical details and proceeding to give you advice instead of the person with the phd? Then this is the place. Do you want to have an allergic reaction to a thyroid med where your entire left side of your body feels lit on fire and your thyroid swells up to where you can't swallow but when you call and say so they tell you there's nothing wrong with the medication and that you need to try it for at least 30 days before the can change it? Then this is the place. The women in the office do their absolute best in a dumpster fire establishment where there is maybe one solid doctor and the rest have either too many patients or are juggling too many things with taking on medical students as well because I continuously have to call to correct medication. Continue to have to call to ask for my own blood work results multiple times and when I've attempted contact on the "portal" for you know. Refills which they have a button for. Or messages which they have an option for, you're left unread. Unwell. and untreated. When you call to ask if anyone could help with your multiple requests via portal you're let in on a wonderful secret: "they don't really check the portal". What the actual hell is going on. Our health care as Americans is already a broken system. Claims rejected. Medication costs through the roof when you pay 100s of dollars in insurance and on top of it all. You cannot. Even. Rely. On. A medical. Establishment. to ensure you don't die from your illness. Do not go here. Dr. Stockton is the only saving grace here. Honestly he should run for the hills and find a new practice because the ship is sinking and that is the only doctor there that is capable of doing their job that I have seen so far and I have had to switch through four doctors so far since being here. To clarify. The office staff. The nurses who draw blood. They are doing their absolute best. And the drs. Are not bad people. But they are understaffed and overworked. They're not provided adequate support from their providers for needles, and other medical supplies and it's just so disappointing because this is how deaths can occur. It's dangerous. And as a patient. It is terrifying.

Meanwhile I'm hearing them talk outside the room about how to introduce yourself in Spanish. The physician comes in to check the reaction of my skin only for a minute and decides I am good on no seasonal allergies, as expected. I only wish if they were going to take longer that they would have checked in on me or mentioned something, because by the end of it I just wanted to cry and walk out. I have a physician check me for asthma before seeing the doctor, and as soon as she walks in, the first thing she tells me in the rudest tone is, "so you're the one with all the problems!" excuse me? "hello, good afternoon, how are you?" Not my favorite greeting, personally. She tells me to breathe so she can listen. Im breathing normal, maybe I'm a little nervous after our first interaction, im not quite sure what it was, but she again very rudely says, "uh, can you breathe right???" I waited for the doctor for more than 20 minutes and, then more than 20 minutes again when they went to get some paperwork so I could leave, and the paperwork didn't exactly come out with the right information either, (I had to call another day to ask about it, in which the operator herself was confused by what was put on there and why). Dr. Hsu was very relatable and kind, she's the type of person you'd wish was family. She seemed genuine. I also had another appointment to discuss the results of my labs. That appointment was with physician Kristi Hunter, 100% recommend her! She made everything so much more clear, got me the information on the conditions I have and had a servants heart, it was so heartwarming! She also gave me suggestions on how to deal with a severe reaction with simple and honest directions. If this rating were on her alone, I would give her 5 stars without a thought! The secretaries and the phone operators are also super sweet, and everyone does ask if you have questions many times throughout the visit or call, which is super thoughtful!
