Thursday night, and Lj's Kitchen fills up while you eat. It starts with one other table in the…read moreroom. By the time the pizza's gone, the bar is full and most of the tables are too. TVs overhead running NESN, a chalkboard listing specials that include a meatball ricotta pizza and a fried green tomato BLT, and a room that goes from quiet to humming in the time it takes to finish dinner. Lauren and I ordered a ten-inch bar pie, pepperoni and meatball, and a chicken parm sandwich on the side with a pile of fresh-cut potato chips. It's what a bar pie should be. Cheese bronzed and even, that dark caramelized edge where it ran past the crust and met the hot pan, the sauce light, not heavy or oversweet, meatball torn into rough chunks, clearly homemade, its flavor strong enough to overpower the rest of the pie a little. Solid pie. The chicken parm sandwich held its own too, cutlet clearly hand-breaded and fresh, not some frozen thing dropped in a fryer, sauce richer and heavier than the pizza's, soaking into good bread without turning it to mush, and those chips tasted like someone actually fried them that day. But the pizza wasn't the thing I kept thinking about on the drive back. It was how fast our drinks got refilled, even as the place filled in around us. How someone checked on us without hovering, the way regulars get checked on, not the way tables get checked on. LJ's has the feel of a neighborhood watering hole where the staff knows half the room by name, except somehow you don't feel like the other half. You feel like you belong, on your first visit, before you've ever said your name. The place is named for the owners' six-year-old daughter, LunaJett, who we hear is a lead waitress on Sundays. Makes sense. It's the kind of restaurant that makes you feel like family before you've finished your first beer, whether you're six or sixty. Not a pilgrimage. But worth the drive to Woonsocket on a Thursday night, and worth going back again.

Finally I had my excuse to make the trip north to Woonsocket. I'm so glad I did. This place packs in so much stuff! A full grocery, plus deli counter and you can order a hot lunch. There's a cozy seating area with Polish clothing, books and art around to give it life. I walked around ten store for a bit, overwhelmed by all the delights on the shelves. I picked up a few items and went to the register. There, I also picked up my scoop. They serve homemade gelato and sorbet here, and I chose the amarena gelato (cherry). She served it up, added a cute little cookie and then I went outside to sit and eat. The texture of this wasn't quite gelato. But it wasn't quite sorbet, either. It was almost like a sherbert. It was smooth, fruity and a little creamy. The marinated cherry flavor really came through. If I could compare it to something family, it was like a grown up version of the old Flintstone Cherry sherbet Push-Up popsicle. I loved it. And I will get it again next time I come in. Krakow is such a special place, their Polish selection is awesome. It made me want to buy a Polish cookbook to learn how to use all the ingredients I saw! If you've ever had a pierogi, that's enough reason to stop in. Just make sure you get some gelato, too!

It's a nice addition but I feel as though it does make the restaurant a little cramped. I stopped in last night with my partner and my dad. We had Ryan for a waiter and I think he was spread a little too thin as I had seen him behind the bar the whole night. He was by no means rude and clearly busy but it definitely seemed as though he didn't check in as much as he could have. As for the food itself it's always been nice. Not stellar and by far not my favorite Italian places but serviceable. The prices are borderline reasonable to pricey, with my meal being $25. I would say $25 is a little steep for two pieces of chicken. However, the portions are gracious enough to leave you full but not bursting and the food always does taste fresh. My Chicken Sorrentino was good but I didn't get a lot of prosciutto which was disappointing. The salad was really good and came with a surprising amount of grilled shrimp (17). The beer battered onion rings were really yummy and freshly fried. Not soggy. The mango habanero chicken tenders had good flavor but there was so much sauce that they were not crispy. I was hoping this would be all I wanted regarding pizza but it wasn't. I wanted a fresh tomato sauce that was tasteful and delicious. This almost seemed like sauce you'd put on top of a chicken parm or something and it was WAY too salty. Bleck. I just had 1 slice and that was enough. The bbq chicken pizza was just ok but kind of lacking flavor and it should come with onion but not worth $2.25 or $2.50 just to add onion as a topping. It's pricey here and honestly I tried this place once and that's enough. Hope they are able to improve a bit and make it work at this location. When she was done I went and asked if they make sandwiches to order. The guy working said "no, we make all of our sandwiches fresh each morning and they're in the case by the door." He wasn't rude, but it seemed odd that they wouldn't sell me a custom sandwich. Here's my first complaint: all the sandwiches were on little foam trays and covered in plastic (like a piece of steak would come on at a grocery store), I don't know if this is how they always do it, but it's a bad idea: all of the sandwiches were squished flat because of how tight the plastic was (and also probably because they stack them up). I'm no elitist, I'm not a fancy guy, but presentation is half the battle and these sandwiches were not appetizing. What's wrong with just rolling your subs in deli paper? I swallowed my pride and grabbed the least flattened turkey sub, along with a bag of chips and a drink. The cashier girl was polite and asked me if I wanted any condiments for the sub, which I did. When I got home and began eating my sub I discovered it already had mayonnaise on it, which I don't like. And it wasn't listed on the label with the ingredients. Which is exactly why I would've ordered a sandwich from the deli, not because I think the ones in the case aren't fresh, but because they looked awful, and now to me it tasted awful. The turkey too was really crumbly... it didn't look like a turkey sub, it looked like a tuna sub. I'm giving 3 stars because the cashier was friendly and the subs ARE cheap, it was less than $4 for a 6" sub. But you know what? Charge me $5 or $6 and make it look (and taste) worth eating. This is one of those places where some things are ridiculously cheap (like the subs) and other items are more than they would be at Cumberland Farms or 7-11.
